This place was established in 1977 and the prices, though not exactly that retro, are still pretty friendly. The only kind of coffee they have are the hot kind that comes in a small white mug (bottomless of course), so set your expectations accordingly. This is one of my favorite joints in Park Slope. And it's for all of the points that other people may have listed as reasons for their low star rating against it. Sure, the food is standard greasy diner fare, but that is to be expected from any diner. The atmosphere is tops. The waitresses are all SO sweet and amazing. I don't think I've ever gone in there without getting a free second soda or a free donut. And I love that the decor is so throwback. I love that they play a crappy radio station and my husband and I often sit there and giggle at the songs that come on. They have a great old school counter where you can sit back and observe the hustle and bustle around you. Everyone feels like a regular and yet, ever if you aren't, you'll be welcomed as such. Now, I consider myself quite the donut connoisseur and the donuts from Donut Luncheonette rank third best out of all the donuts I've ever had. And they are EASILY my favorite donuts in the NYC area. Especially when you hit your timing perfectly and you see a fresh batch coming out from the back. So stop in, lower your fancy pants NYC expectations, and allow yourself to enjoy the low key, neighborhoody, greasily delicious ambience of the Donut Luncheonette. You walk into this place at all hours of the day, and are sure to meet the most odd-looking characters. Con Ed workers, cops, firemen, hospital workers, young people, old people, black, white, yellow - they all come to Donuts for the home-made donuts, cheeeeeeap diner food, and even cheaper coffee. This is the home of the burger and fries for less than $3.00. I always marvel at their use of those plastic cups, with plastic inserts for cofee and tea. How much more low-end can you get? Very efficient, with the guy at the register barking orders into a microphone that connects to the kitchen in the back. Good for late night grease fixes after bar crawls, delivery 24 hours a day, or a trip back from Manhattan, right off the F train. The decor is old school formica and bright mirrors. My friend Molly is hooked on their fried Mozarella sticks. Surprisingly, their sandwiches are fresh, and their pickles even fresher. I was just starting to be a regular here but NO more after today. The old lady waitress was very rude for no reason but I'm thinking she was racist because we were Asian and she was nice to other customers. We told her we were ready to order then she didn't say anything she just nod her head. We ordered 3 omelettes from the menu and then she was giving us the annoyed face like we suppose to know and tell her what kind of toast we wanted. It's her job to ask the customer. I had my eye on this place WELL before I even got to Brooklyn. I hear it's the best donuts in town! I tried two while visiting, the glazed chocolate and the jelly, and I have to say the jelly donut was my favorite. All the donuts are homemade and made fresh and if I could have fit more in my belly at the time I would have. We also stopped by here for breakfast one morning, and got your typical breakfast, eggs, turkey sausage, and home fries. Huge dishes and for cheap. The food was good and the service was quick. Once again......................CRACK!! CRACK IN A BOW TIE!! I don't know what they do, or how they do it but there is crack in these donuts!! This is not the type of place where you want to go and sit down and eat your donut, because the inside of this place is dim and kinda sad. The seats and booths are a hot mess.
