I think I have found a new favorite. This place is just wow. When you first enter it doesn't look like much but I will say it is clean. The food... OMG! Way better than I expected. The staff is friendly and offer great and interesting conversation. I ordered the French Toast Deluxe which comes with your choice of eggs and meat and my boyfriend ordered a Reuben. The french toast alone was enough to make me a life time customer. The best French toast I've ever had. It wasn't overly sweet and had a nice little crisp to it. I had never tried a Reuben before and decided to take a bite after watching him devour the first half. In that moment, I instantly became a fan. It was shocking news to discover that they haven't seen much business since the pandemic, considering how good the food and service is. I hope that changes once people discover their food. As a chill was in the air, was looking for a diner type place in the area for soup. This place fitted the bill. Reminds me of the many decent coffee shops in NYC back in the day. A bunch of clean and good tables line the wall. The staff is super neighborly friendly, making sure you're well taken care of and comfortable if staying in. My daughters and I had a really pleasant time at this coffee shop/diner. They treated us well from the moment that we walked in. There was a young lady training that hadn't been there long, but she was assisted through the process of taking our orders and bringing food and drinks to our table. There were daily Greek-themed meals available. Everyone was so busy. The environment was warm (welcoming). We kept being checked on to make sure that there wasn't anything that we needed. We ate dinner our first night in Brooklyn. We ate breakfast two days later. We've already made plans to return to this spot the next time we are in NYC. Oh, the food was great, too!!! This is a true blue locally owned deli joint in sunset park Brooklyn. I've been going here since I was 16 and now I'm 26. Since I moved to Miami I didn't have the pleasure of going back for almost 5-6 years now! Well I went for vacation and thank God it was still there. John who it's named after is usually behind the counter and you really feel the mom and pop feels here. My friend and I ordered from them on a Friday night and they delivered promptly at their 30 minute quoted time. I had the veggie salad with portobello mushrooms, roasted peppers, artichoke, and mozzarella which topped a blend of spinach, arugula and spring mix. I added avocado for $1.50 and they were plenty generous with it. Very fresh & colorful ingredients (wish I got a pic-it was a very pretty salad.) We shared an order of grilled pita and it was a perfectly portioned and healthy dinner. The rest of their menu includes sandwiches, paninis and an interesting variety of other salads. I can see why Big John's is a favorite to many. They have A LOT on their menu while also keeping flavors simple. You pretty much receive what you know. The team behind the counter is welcoming, as though you're a part of them. I've only been in their old location across the street of their new one, but I'm sure the vibe is still the same. There are a few seating options for dining in, but it's definitely more of a place where most customers order to go. The preparation of the food can take a few minutes, but you can call to order ahead or order through Seamless if time isn't on your side. Overall taste is a 3/5. Big John's is our neighborhood go to for great sandwiches and burgers. I've had pretty much every sandwich, wrap and pannini and they all rock. Lots of interesting combos and if you get a burger it is cooked to temp, even for take away. It is great to carry home a burger and find it hot and pink in the middle, just the way it was requested. My wife says the chicken salad is the best ever. Plus John and the guys behind the counter and super nice and great fun to come in and chat with, you get some real Brooklyn banter with your lunch order. Wasn't to fond of the wings seemed like they just throw some sauce over some oily ass chicken parts, and the shake was wack. 1st. Big John's is about a block away from me on my way to the train. I will normally stop by here for a coffee and maybe a bagel. The service is always SUPER friendly and they take the time to get to know their customers, it's almost as if a San Francisco deli was dropped in the middle of west Brooklyn with the staff chained to the counter unable to leave. They're that nice. And it seems like the same staff is always here.... Maybe I've said too much. Prices are good here, and they have some vegetarian options. One thing I would suggest if you're in a hurry though is to call ahead, I am not sure what kind of oven they're using to heat their bagels but it takes a looooooong time to get it back. Really. Such a long time. I love the place, love the people but hope they do something to fix that one minor aspect! read more

Idk why I expected something at least ok. As you can see in the picture, the burger was miserable. I ordered a chipotle burger and ingredients were forgotten. It was just a cheap slice of cheddar and patty. So $2 extra I paid for chipotle burger was waste. The bun was also not good. The fries were soggy and very soft. To complete the price limit, I also ordered a bagel. It was hard as stone. I don't recommend this place, at least for burgers or bagels. read more

Big John's has been my burger favorite since an extensive search discovered that theirs was the only establishment I could find that included fresh onion slices with their hamburger deluxe. By the way, the burger was good also. I'm a burger purist. Everything is based on my childhood memories of Mississippi hamburgers (never called burgers...) in the '50s. So don't give me all the gourmet burger choices. Give me a good quality beef burger with the essentials. Choose how you wish your beef burger cooked. Alternate selections for non beef people are turkey burger, vegetable burger or marinated chicken breast. With the deluxe selection French fries are included. For an extra $1 one can substitute sweet potato fries, waffle fries or onion rings. Their sweet potato fries are yummy. My son always gets the Bacon Cheeseburger Deluxe. But... you guessed it!! Bacon didn't come on hamburgers in Mississippi during the '50s. A new menu item tried this week was quite a hit with my four year old Grandson, who was complaining of a "silly stomach". My daughter-in-law ordered the grilled chicken breast over rice & portobello mushrooms. She proclaimed it excellent, as did the little one who had been turning down all other food offerings. Delivery is prompt and accurate. When I ordered earlier this week, I received a call from the restaurant that one plate had been left out of the delivery. They would be sending it out immediately. The last plate arrived so promptly that it was obvious they prided themselves on accuracy. Big John's, you're my burger choice. And the little one requests more chicken and rice. read more

I ordered a bagel with extra cream cheese and a large hot chocolate. The bagel was pretty solid. The hot chocolate was, hands down, the worst I've ever had. In fact, upon lifting the tab of the hot chocolate cover and taking a sip, I thought they accidentally gave me hot water instead of hot chocolate. I then removed the cap, saw that the water was a light brown, and realized their hot chocolate was just repulsive and tasteless. The 20 minute wait for a bagel with cream cheese (there was only 1 other person in the store), was a little ridiculous. I will say that the guy who worked there (I'm presuming "Big John") was incredibly nice. However, the repulsive hot chocolate + a 20 minute wait for a bagel with cream cheese = me probably not returning here anytime soon. read more

Stopped in for breakfast early one morning for the first time while waiting for the housing works store to open. I can't stand Mcdonalds anymore so I was looking for an alternative. Looking at the menu they had lots of options to chose from. Everyone behind the counter was really helpful and friendly. When I have a gloomy Saturday they are my go to delivery call and I know I can always count on their quality, delivery speed and kind customer service. Whenever I call, there's always a warm friendly voice taking my order or informing me where my delivery is - You can hear his smile over the phone and it makes you smile too. From order to delivery, it usually is within an hour and the food is always warm when I receive it! The quality of their food is always consistent too! I love their pancakes, Belgium waffles and salads. I've eaten pancakes all around the world, but Big John's pancakes are my favorite! (How do they make it so fluffy?!) Big John's is on my corner and brings a really great vibe to an otherwise lonesome commercial stretch. They took the place over from an incredibly sweet Asian woman who used to own it and really spruced it up. I'm glad that they kept many of the basic on-the-go breakfast favs and the low-LOW prices. You can get a bagel with cream cheese and a small coffee during the morning special for under $3. They also made the formerly desolate seating area into a pleasant and comfortable space, not to mention the great new corner mural outside. The guys are all incredibly friendly, although sometimes service is a bit slow when they're juggling a lot of phone orders. The hot coffee looks just as ugly as it used to be under the former owner, but hey if you want coffee for a buck that's what you get. I recommend one of the breakfast croissants with bacon and egg and the iced coffee, both super tasty. They do have simple syrup, though you might have to ask for it when you order, and make sure you're clear on how you like your coffee done cuz those boys will make it SAH-WEET unless you're specific. read more

It is the only place in the area that sees to make the kind of fresh foods they offer instead of stuff like McDonald's or KFC or pizza or Spanish food. I'm here on a cloudy winter Monday morning. There are a dozen seats in total here at 4 tables, and i don't give a damn cuz no one else is here. However, the peeps behind the counter are busy at work, and they're fully grown adults... not some college kid stuck with some crappy summer job. No offense college kids, it's just that it's generally more pleasant to deal with someone who takes their job seriously. In my mind, it lends more credibility to the whole operation. They need to keep a really customer-friendly operation going in order to afford to pay these people. So I ordered wings and a side of sautéed veggies (for breakfast) and I'm happy to report that--according to a man behind the counter--"it's never too early for wings". Great attitude. Anyway, the wings were good and I wanted more. The veggies however were plain looking, and equally uninteresting to the palette. I have to say that the food took a REALLY long time to get ready. Maybe they don't do any Prep on their food in advance? Fresh food is great, but maybe they can find a way to warn customers about the wait. You wouldn't expect that from a place like this. read more
