Booths with high walls and dim lighting along with a cool Minneapolis mural immediately got you into supper club mode Jorge was our server and he was excellent. He told us about the restaurant and brought out steaks for explanation. He was also spot on with regard to sides and his recommendations. I went with the prime rib, given Jorge's description and I'm so glad I did. It was delicious. Cooked perfectly, it was the most tender medium rare prime rib I've ever had. So tasty. For apps, we started with shrimp cocktail and crab cakes. The apps are fairly small but they were delicious. Given the size of the steaks and sides, small apps were perfect to whet your appetite. For sides we had garlic mashed potatoes, brussel sprouts, and green beans. More than we needed for 4 people (we didn't heed Jorge's recommendation because we wanted to try two veggies). You don't have to worry about parking here because they have valet. The lighting is a little on the dim side, but you will appreciate it, especially if you have been sitting under fluorescent light. First off best filet in Minneapolis. Doesn't compare to any other steak house. They always prepare a special table for our birthdays and anniversaries. This visit was special as it was our anniversary and they had a deal if you're an 801 Prime club member you could get 2oz caviar or 2 drinks if you spend $100. We made the trip to the city for the caviar experience and was told they ran out 2 days before the deal was done. The dinner was still special but a major letdown as we had made the 40minute trip from the burbs for the caviar. We were a party of six strangers brought together by an app for the purpose of getting out, meeting people, and having dinner. This venue is gorgeous; dark, polished wood, vintage lighting, impeccable Green Coat service. It's the 1920s with flair. Our server, Alex, gave us a little history of 801 and explained it was modeled after Delmonico's in NYC. He was so knowledgeable and answered our questions easily. There is a framed painting of a steer from whose progeny all beef is sourced. Typically the server will bring out a trolley of the various cuts of meat and describes each, but one diner in our group was on a fast and asked that they not. (I gently asked why she came during a fast and she explained she joined us for the company and conversation.) We had plenty of both! Accustomed to the USDA Choice steaks typically available, I was bowled over by the flavor and tenderness of Prime cuts, especially Wagyu! I ordered the Surf & Turf, two filets topped with a huge prawn and a perfect scallop. The Madeira sauce was lick-your-plate delicious and the mid-rare filet melted in my mouth. I confess, I can't stop thinking about that steak. The warm sourdough bread is on point. The diner to my left ordered a side of grilled asparagus and it was enormous -- a dinner plate piled with huge spears that he ended up sharing with the table. A wonderful evening. We had the petite filet, Caesar salad, and hash browns with bleu cheese instead of cheddar, but the star was the Surf & Turf. Two small filets, shrimp and scallop covered in a luscious Maderia sauce. Mind-blowing. Our server, Clancy, was fantastic, guiding us through the menu with ease, despite our seating at 9:30 pm (801 closes at 10 pm). He even delivered our Crème Brûlée to the bar at our request so that we could catch what we thought would be the end of the Tigers v Mariners Game 5. Stellar service and stellar steak (as it should be for the price). They can do "smaller" portions on many items but the portion might still be very large. They can also do quite a bit as GF. Two of us split a wagyu ribeye, truffle fries, and string beans and we still had food left over. The steak was cooked perfectly and was super tender with lots of flavor. Fries were crispy and string beans had some delicious bacon on them. They even accommodated me with an off-menu ice cream that sounded great. The one thing I probably wouldn't get next time would be a mojito since there were no mint leaves or lime, just like a mix, but that was such a minor thing. The rest of the meal really shined. Side-note, she ate at the brand new location in Tyson's without me, so she felt bad..LOL! Our server, I wish I could remember his name, was extremely personable and loved his job. He literally made me change my order from lamb chops to a ribeye just by his description once he ran down each cut of steak they offered. I had never been heard of this chophouse before, but my brother had mentioned it so we went out on a double date. This is located downtown Minneapolis so plan to either find street parking or park in a ramp. Once you get inside it's a pretty and quiet with ample seating and good space. Our server Santiago was very attentive and friendly. As far as the food goes, all of us got something different. I had the surf and turf and all of it was seasoned really well and tasty. We had 4 sides and enjoyed all of them. The onion rings were huge. All Of these were shareable and we definitely had left overs. Second time visiting 801 for birthdays. 801 is such a treat and they are so consistent. The staff is so knowledgeable about the food that 801 offers. The restaurant is so spacious that you never feel like you're cramped in like sardines and can hear the next table's conversations! Highly recommend seasonal menu! Came in wanting to order a dry aged porter house, but Santiago our server showed us a ribeye that was both dry aged and wet aged for I think 120 days(? I forgot lol). This was the most flavorful steak I have ever had! Highly recommend this one if it is still available! I had the maitake foie gras topping for my steak, it made it even more flavorful! But the steak definitely can hold its own. 801 is pricy, but they are sooo generous with their portions, and the quality is incredibly consistent. This is definitely worth a visit! read more

Considering the price, we had a pretty basic experience. We had some cocktails to start. They were small, particularly the negroni and weak. For starters, we had the mussels, burrata salad and the down home shrimp. Mussels were pretty good. Salad and shrimp weren't worth the $21 and $25 respectively. The shrimp are served with mashed which makes it a very heavy starter. We then had the surf and turf, mashed potatoes and blue cheese potatoes. Steak was tender and cooked as requested. Sauce was very good. Mashed potatoes were good as well, very smooth. Blue cheese potatoes were not good. They were undercooked. We did say something and they took them off. We had chocolate cake for dessert. It was a nice gesture as they offered a choice of any dessert for birthday but the cake was sooooo sweet. Not very good. Service was average. Considering we payed over $430 for our meal, the whole experience didn't feel refined or elevated for the price. It was also not busy at all, so the atmosphere was none. First off you get A LOT, which isn't bad, however they had a sort of state fair fried flavor if that makes any sense. Not bad, but not what I wanted at an expensive steak place. I do appreciate that they were beer battered and not breaded. For dinner I ordered the 1 lb lobster tail and a side of garlic mashed potatoes, which made me wish I had multiple stomachs because the potatoes were AMAZING, but I couldn't polish them off. Of course the lobster tail was delicious as well. It's very pricey so this isn't a weekly or monthly place I would go to for dinner, however definitely a special occasion spot. read more

This isn't it. From the moment we got there the only thing the place had going was the hostess. Our dinner reservation wasn't ready for a good 20 minutes after we showed up. Order second drink. Same drink, served in a different glass, different ice (first was 1 cube of whisky ice, second drink was tail ice. Both tasted different, so no consistency, (which would be fine if this was your local dive bar, but it's not) Steak showcase comes around, half the menu's dry aged steaks are missing.... Waitress has a great excuse that their chef wants perfection, so items were pulled... excuse none the less... Order food... Food comes.... Filet mignon with truffle butter comes for dinner. Steak is undercooked to order, cold and the truffle butter isn't even remotely melting on to top of the steak that was supposedly cooked in a special high temp broiler... Third Old Fashioned... even worse... less ice, no mettle... this time it's just like my local dive bar... I'm not here to do anything but hope the business reads this.... Personally I love 801 Chop, our first experience was in the summer but we have been back since. There's just something about the service and the environment that makes us go back. There are a lot of other steakhouses down town and in the surrounding areas but 801 is a step above. First they start with a warm fresh baked sourdough for the table, if I could eat just that I would. We've tried a couple of their signature drinks and every single option has been great. I don't think you can go wrong with anything from the bar. For starts we either go with the tartare($25), pork belly ($24) or even the meatballs (22). The Caesar salad ($16) is also a staple of ours and can be shared between two people as a starter. Your waiter will bring out a cart to show different cuts and if you don't know a lot about meat they'll give a quick 101 on what to pick depending on what you like. We've tried a couple of different steaks and each one was good, the petite filet mignon $75 has been a fan favorite but for $10 more I recommend the 12oz. Some people are good with just steak but I find adding a butter or additional topping just kicks it up a notch. If you're unsure of what to get go with the black truffle butter ($13). As a limited meat eater the sides are my favorite part. Most of the time I will order the one pound baked potato (with the works) as a main ($11). It comes with pork belly and you cannot go wrong. The scalloped potatoes ($18), Garlic Mashed Potatoes ($16), Grilled Asparagus ($19), French Green Beans ($16) are all worth trying. I think my favorite side (besides the baked potato) is the onion rings ($15). We've never made it to dessert but I'd like to try it next time if we can limit the amount of sides we order. I recommend making a reservation. 50% of the time I doubt we would have waited if we walked in, but I'm not willing to take that chance. I highly recommend checking it out. read more

We were in town for the Sunday night football game and decided to have dinner the night before. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about the concept, the food, choices, and beverage. He gave great explanations of the different cuts of meat and guided us through best options on the menu. I started with a featured salad of mixed greens with red onions and candied pecans and apple slices. The salad was a little overdressed, but still very good. I chose the scallops for my entrée. They were prepared perfectly and very tender. A high level of salt really brought out, the sea flavor. The other people in the party had the ribeye and the New York strip. He brought out some warm Sour Dough for the table and then brought out a meat cart. He showed us all the different cuts of meat that were available and talked about how long they were aged. We ordered prosciutto wrapped Scallops for an appetizer and they did not disappoint. The sides that they offer are 'family style' and meant to be shared (they also offer half sizes). My husband ordered the filet with mushroom ragout with a side of scalloped potatoes and I got the 1/2 lb lobster tail. We shared the entire meal. It was cooked perfectly. Wonderful new addition to the MSP steakhouse scene. This is up there with my personal favorites in the TC Metro (Murray's, Capital Grille, JD Hoyt's, P.S. Steak, and formerly Burch). The service was the only downside with some minor hiccups at checkout - partially which is I have no idea if I was correctly charged for my experience as of yet (still TBD as the initial charge was more than our bill and receipt). As for the food, the small shellfish platter was a decent starter (albeit a little overpriced for the contents). The Prime Rib was phenomenal, one of the most tender and flavorful versions of the cut we've had anywhere. The Delmonico was also fantastic. And finally, the A-5 Wagyu was exceptional and not as astronomically priced as I've seen elsewhere. If you love steaks, you should try it!
