Finally got to try this restaurant! This restaurant is cozy not very big. We were a group of 8 hungry people. Took up 2 big tables in the middle. We ordered so much food! The portion sizes are so generous! The menu offer different varieties of Chinese cuisine, Taiwanese, Cantonese and Szechuan style cooking. We all loved the Taiwanese Pork Chop with Fried rice! Pork chop was so tender and crispy. Cilantro beef was so fragrant. Pork belly was soft and garlicky. We enjoyed all the dishes. Only the beef noodle soup was bit disappointing. The broth was clean and beef was ok but the noodles were soggy. I expected some fresh hand pulled noodles but they used spaghetti/ lo mein noodles. I wanted to fall in love but it was just a rumored romance. My friend really sold me on this place. I should have known better. He has always had questionable taste. Ordered the hot and sour soup, crispy noodla, and braised pork belly. The hot and sour soup was lacking in depth and flavor. The viscosity was great but without the meat and shrimp, it just wasn't the same. It also wasn't hot or sour enough. The braise pork belly was okay in terms of flavor. The knife skills could use work though as the size was inconsistent. The crispy noodles were the only thing we truly enjoyed. Great crisp and good sized portion. Overall not a bad place to get some Chinese eats but there's definitely closer spots that offers more. read more

Q: Why is it hard to make chinese food? A: Because it takes a lot of wok My friend had been singing their praises for a minute now. It took a while but I finally popped in. Here's all that I ordered: Seafood Crispy Noodles ($16.99): Crispy, lots of seafood, lots of vegetables, and they give you a generous amount of gravy. I really enjoyed the crispy noodles. This is probably the dish I would order again here. Braised Pork Belly ($23.49): For $23.49, I say skip this dish. The flavors were there, it was tender, but the cuts of meat were inconsistent. Some pieces were leaner, some were fattier, and some pieces looked like half the layer was torn off. The cuts were inconsistent. Hot & Sour Soup $12.49): Meatless which is good if that's not your thing but it does affect the flavor. I added both black and white vinegar to my soup along with white pepper and it still did not taste the way I wanted it. Perhaps the lack of meat was the culprit. Good viscosity but not the right flavor. All in all, 81 Asian Bistro is solid but the flavors were lacking where it's supposed to be more pungent. read more

It makes me sad because I truly want more quality Taiwanese food in the East Valley... The restaurant seems to be in a location that doesn't do that well but that inside of the restaurant is ok. The bathroom is... lets just say needs mucho help. I won't go into this too much so that I don't get too mean but for me the food was not cooked the way a Taiwanese person would cook it and the staff was not very friendly for being Taiwanese or pretending to be. The example was that our kids asked for soy sauce and the lady server tossed / threw down packets of soy sauce on the table... I was so shocked at the time. Fine, I'll go into details now that the proverbial juices are flowing: - 3 cup chicken: deep fried?? overly cooked and no sauce. Oh what really made me super mad was they gave us the chicken back for the parts. There was like barely any meat at all and why would you give someone scraps for meat? To me that's super wrong! I think the dish was like $17??? - Salted Duck: it was bland and flavorless - seemed old and off? - Braised pork belly: skin tender but meat was dry and hard. If you can't handle this dish, don't put it on your 200 item menu. This dish is so sacred mannnn I also asked for mapo tofu w/ stinky tofu which was shown on the menu but they didn't have stinky tofu. - ordered other things but I don't wanna talk about it anymore for my trauma haha. Our friends also asked to order lu rou fan which is on the menu but they said they didn't have it and then a group came in and ordered it and they got it? Also stuff that was supposed to be weekend only, they let them order it but didn't offer to us (like the intestine vermicelli). Maybe I need to brush up on my mandarin because something was weird that day. I hope they can change their ways - someone let me know when they improve. I am really bummed and disappointed in the food served at this restaurant. Looking at the menu and photos online prior to coming here, I already had a hunch it wasn't going to be good. The photos were underwhelming and sadly, it wasn't just the photos. The taste looks exactly like how it looks. Bland. Service was good. They were nice and made sure to refill our water cups. The inside is okay, nothing special. It doesn't feel homey or nice inside. It needs decoration and warmth to this place. We got: Fried Rice: the kids ate it and enjoyed it so that's a win Three Cup Special: the only dish I really ate as it has flavor but it's deep fried which is weird and not authentic Salted Duck: the most disappointing dish. It was so bland that I had to ask for soy sauce and chili oil Braised Pork Belly: this was tender and good but not as tasty as how my husband makes it so perhaps I'm biased Pea Sprouts: I took one bite and didn't reach for it again Egg Drop Soup: bland. Finally found a really good Taiwanese restaurant. I've heard the service can be hit or miss, but honestly my experience was great. This was my first time here and the food was amazing and tasted very authentic. The staff were super nice and friendly, which made it even better. This is definitely going to be my go-to spot for Taiwanese food. My favorite dish was the braised beef noodle soup; so good and really comforting. If you're not super into Taiwanese food but you're dining with someone who is, they also have a section of Americanized Chinese dishes, which is nice for picky eaters. Prices are pretty average, the vibe is casual and welcoming, and I'd 100% come back. read more

I love 81! They used to have their business in Tucson, but moved to Phoenix. It was so good, i had to go when I visited. They have a huge variety of food on their menu, and a lo by specials board. One of my friends is vegan and this is our favorite place to eat together. She loves their tofu and so do I! It's super crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. This place was recommended by a friend. We came here for lunch with my family. We ordered the Taiwan diced pork rice, that's like a must have in a Taiwanese restaurant. It was very good. Highly recommend. Then we ordered the BBQ Pork and Egg rice, which was just ok. We ordered the Lemon Pepper Fried Tofu, it was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I really liked it. Probably would be even better if they had a sauce to dip in. The string beans were good too. Oh, and the scallion pancake was excellent. Just checked this spot out for a friend's birthday. We were very happy with the authentic Taiwanese dishes. We also appreciated that we were able to bring our own cake and they kept it in the fridge for us while we ate. Everything came out perfectly cooked and flavorful. It really hit the spot. You do have to self serve for the soda drinks. But, service was good and the food came out pretty quickly. We especially liked the Golden Brick Salted Egg tofu and Dong Po braised pork belly, though each dish was a hit. Fairly small/cozy inside but clean. You pay up tab the front when done. Found this place on Facebook as we were so craving for authentic Taiwanese food while we have had enough American-chinese food. The restaurant looks like a small and family-owned restaurant, interior (especially bathroom) is not attractive but food and service were amazing! They do have a big menu and end up we ordered the fried rice with pork chop, bamboo chicken soup and bittermelon with salted egg. Flavorful and the portion is huge, they also gave customers some pieces of pineapple cake as a little desert and treat. Will definitely come back when visiting Phoenix again. read more

The food was quite authentic. I ordered the Taiwanese beef noodle soup, and my wife had the fried chicken with rice. We shared the spicy beef shank. The soup was very flavorful and well spiced, though not too spicy, and the meat was plentiful and tender (very tender!). The spicy beef shank was quite good as well, you could really feel the numbness from the Sechuan peppercorns, but there was not much chili oil compared to what I would usually expect. Still, good flavor and good texture. Overall, the portion sizes were really enormous; neither of us were able to fully finish our meals. Service was very calm, attentive but not badgering. It's a very new restaurant, so they're still figuring out their ambiance, which feels fairly utilitarian, but I'm fine with that. Especially when the food is good! They have some interesting Taiwanese themed decorations on the wall, and some funny signs. We'll definitely be returning to explore more of the menu later. read more

Found a new favorite in Chandler! 81 Asian Bistro has some unique menu items you don't see everywhere else. New? Or special item? Spicy Duck: This was the standout. I haven't seen this at other places, and they nailed it. The flavor was great and the meat was very clean-tasting. Braised Pork Belly: Absolutely awesome. It melted in our mouths! Can never go wrong with Taiwanese braised pork belly Green Beans with Chilies: Fresh, snappy, and seasoned perfectly. THE BEST RESTAURANT!! I first tried 81 Asian Bistro when it was 81 Hong Kong Cafe in Tucson. My boyfriend and I tried it at the recommendation of his friend who was an international student from Taiwan. It is not an exaggeration when I say my life was changed by the Chicken Bites. Hands down the best Taiwanese fried chicken I have ever had. We also always get the BBQ Pork fried rice and it's the best fried rice I've ever had. We were devastated when we learned that 81 Hong Kong cafe had closed and we were so excited to learn that they had relocated and opened!! 81 Asian Bistro has the same menu, charm, and FANTASTIC food as 81Hong Kong cafe and we could not be more thrilled!
