So this was interesting. I felt like this stop could have been a solid four but with some odd events and other details the stars fall to two, maybe one and a half but we all know yelp don't do half's. First impression, welcome to Mel's diner of the 80's where the waitresses still wear some old school outfits and the dessert case is filled with huge cakes and pies. Speaking of the atmosphere I don't believe they did much updating to their dining room in decades. However, I have to point out that the restrooms were very, very clean and seemed updated. Regardless it had a diner feel and that is indeed what they are. What I didn't expect, being a diner and all, is the extensive menu. Too extensive if you ask me. Pages and pages of all sorts of food. They have your standard diner fare, burgers, tuna melts, meatloaf and hot roast beef. But then they had your not so standard diner fare, stir fry, steak Florentine, crab cakes, and ribs. Very all over the place kind of menu. Our visit was for lunch on the way back to Pittsburgh. I eat a salad all most every day for lunch. This day was no exception and I also felt I was playing it pretty safe in ordering the salad. Our waitress was an older lady. She seemed nice enough, well at least at first. There were times she was crazy attentive like filling my coffee mug after only a drink or two then other times I didn't see her for a while, primarily after our food was delivered. So I order, a cup of chili (2.89) and a Greek Salad (8.99), that came with tomato, cucumber, feta cheese, onions Kalamata olives and a side of grilled pita. I added grilled chicken (4.99 up charge) and requested to swap dressings to their Balsamic, which I was happy to see was made in house. My chili was quickly delivered. On first bite I taste an unpleasant sweetness permeating through my mouth. It was so, so sweet. The texture and color also seemed off. There were big chunks of stewed tomatoes, ones that come right out of the can, that were not cooked down all the way and the meat was rather flavorless or should I say, I just tasted sweet. I ate about half, I was hungry, and set it to the side. The waitress asked how I liked it, which was clearly a formality cause I told her I didn't that it was too sweet. She didn't respond back, just took my cup away. I was hoping my salad would really make this decision to eat here better but alas it didn't. My Greek salad was delivered and the portion was nice. I thought wow I wish I would have just ordered the salad and skipped the chili. The chicken was a little clunky. It wasn't cut into strips, more uneven pieces. It was a little anemic, but overall not terrible. There was huge pieces of green pepper on this salad that was not noted on the menu. Not a big deal, I am just not a fan of raw green peppers. But the worst and most unforgiving part was the olives. Ever unexpectedly bite into an olive to crunch down on a tooth busting pit? What the heck?! Who serves a salad covered in olives with their pits intact? At this point I am realizing I have to spit a pit out into a napkin every time I take a bite. Is this Seinfeld and mutton? How lady like am I? I guess I would have fairly enjoyed my salad had I not been weaving and dodging pits the whole time. So here is where they lost the last star. Upon paying, which you do at the register, not from your table, our waitress walked up to ring us up. I am guessing they usually have a hostess that does this. I paid with my card and she asked how much of a tip I want to leave. Well ok I wasn't aware I couldn't just write it in, but I state $6.00 which was about 20%. She adds it and as I am signing my check the hostess comes back to the register where our waitress begins to complain to her that all her tables have been terrible today and she needs a break. What the?! I just gave her a strange glance as she habitually said thanks honey now you have a good day. Since they make crummy chili, can't take the time to pit the olives served on their salads, and the waitress openly in front of her customers complains about them, I am thinking I would never stop in again when back in the area. read more

Food tasted great, despite my lemon having an interesting film on it. Service seemed great until the waitress "accidentally" dropped a check on the floor in front of us while serving our food. Seemed innocent enough until we left to pay and she "accidentally" dropped a bowl full of cut lemons on the ground behind the counter, giggling uncontrollably along with a young cook beside her staring menacingly at me. We had an amazing stop here for lunch on thr way home from Aberdeen! I had the french toast and bacon. The French toast was fluffy and delicious! Highly recommend! My son got the 83 burger and ate every bite! My other son got the kids spaghetti and meatballs and it was great portion size and he ate every bite. My mother in law got the athenian omelette and enjoyed it as well. We saved room for dessert! I had soft serve ice cream, they had the chocolate peanut butter cheese cake, strawberry cheese cake, and snickers cheesecake. 1 layer of cake 1 layer of cheese cake with delicious filling in between! Tonight was an amazing experience for us at the diner. My son (6) and I spent the day at HersheyPark and were heading home to baltimore and needed dinner we pulled off and stopped in because he was getting a massive headache. He was so excited our waiter was named Conner (also his name!) but things went downhill, my little guys head was killing him after ordering and he laid down. Server Conner brought him sprite and crackers quickly. My little guy ended up getting sick at the table. Conner got him a cup and was so cool and calm with us. I knew it had to be crappy to have a kid puke at your table. Brought us extra napkins and asked if we needed anything else. Brought us boxes and a fresh puke cup when I said we were tapping out. Ended up bringing me a soda to go. Conner was amazing from start to finish and I know it has to suck to have that happen in your section (thankfully my little dude gets car sick so he's pretty good with aim and there wasn't a mess but still!) I hope Conner knows how great of a person he is to have been so kind to a really crappy situation and we'll definitely be back next time through. The food was even still really good an hour and half later in a hotel room because we definitely weren't making it home tonight. I would generally give a 5 but today they get a 3. I don't care for home fries and I asked to substitute corned beef hash with an up charge. They said we can't do that. We can only substitute apple sauce, cottage cheese....which is actually down grading the product and keeping the price the same. Your basic diner. Good food. Decent prices. Desserts that are home made and make you wish your entree/sandwich/soup was a smaller portion so you had space for dessert. Service is quick. I've never had a problem with the food. My only food gripe is that their chili is too mild/sweet. Then again, they're not looking for chili heads like me and I realize that they need to cater to the general population. The prices are just a little higher than what you find at other diners in the greater Harrisburg area (or at least they appear to be that way to me). I've eaten here several times and I've never seen it empty. It's not always busy, but there's always at least a few other diners. As you would expect, the coffee is also good. Always hot and your cup never goes dry. While I'm here . . . can someone please explain why so many of the diners in Harrisburg are decorated in these hospital-ish pastel colors that remind me of nurses' uniforms? Don't they realize that red makes you eat more? Finally, I'd probably give this a 3.5 . . . but I'm rounding up. The most interesting thing is that they don't have any potato chips. I know . . . it's shocking! Mere miles from the city of York where they make the chips this diner actually shuns them. It's actually kind of nice . . . most places shove a handful (or less) of lack lustre chips on your plate just to take up space. This place doesn't stoop. Here a week ago... none of staff wearing masks. Our family - including a newborn and a 92 year old - were seated in an unoccupied area. After food was delivered to the table, another family came in and was seated at a table immediately adjacent to ours. Since we were almost finished, we hurried to finish so we could leave - but soon yet another family was brought in and seated at another table adjacent to ours. We left the remaining food and exited. As we left, I told the girl at the counter that they should not be seating people so close ( there were plenty of empty tables, so should not have been an issue). She said something about having "new servers" (not sure what that had to do with it?). As I walked out, my daughter said she rolled her eyes at my back . Perfect! Lots of parking at the door, 1 small step to get to walkway to the door if that is a concern, choice of booths or tables, greeted by a friendly hostess/cashier, server brought us mugs of coffee that were constantly topped off a real must for breakfast, 60s 70s music playing, food came out fast, hot, reasonably priced, and then it was time to pay, again a friendly person at the register. There is a small case that is packed with the most delicious looking cheesecakes-under $6 for a precut slice, pies--not as much as the cheesecakes, went with a peanut butter pie on chocolate crust--the best, to die for, not too sweet, makes you want the whole pie, Bailey's cheesecake was good but the Snickers cheesecake got the vote over the Bailey's. It was our first stop but not the last. It's JUST 8 miles up from Rt. 30 so we will stop from now on. Don't miss it. read more

It is now normally made with pork, and the Texas specialty chicken fried steak is believed to be an outgrowth of this dish brought to the USA by German immigrants. And coconut cake with a root beer float. Not the healthiest meal , I've had but the customer service was enjoyable along with a decent meal and warm faces. This is a post-remodel, post-COVID update. We visited recently and were surprised at the remodel; whereas the dining room looked comfortably worn prior to remodeling, it now looks hard and dark and smaller. It's also louder because the carpet was removed. We were sat next to several other tables and our server was wearing a mask that only covered her mouth, not her nose. While we waited for our food, someone started to mop the floors just feet from our table and all the other diners. We experienced this one other time and the cleaner that is used is extremely strongly scented and frankly unpleasant when you're expecting to smell your food. It didn't help that it seemed like nearly the entire dining room was empty except the corner near the restrooms where the mopping was occurring. Our food came after a long wait and we had to ask for condiments which our partially masked server had to retrieve. All together an unpleasant, disappointing experience. read more

Solid place. Kind of like the type of roadside diner you'd see in a movie without the cheese factor (no old time looks here, more like the restaurant part of your average low budget hotel). The wait staff was attentive and didn't give us the side eye even though we came lugging 3 adults with 3 babies. I had the egg salad sandwich, because it was one of the only vegetarian things on the menu. It was ok, not great, more saucy than I would have liked. A friend of mine had the crab cake, which was massive, but she didn't comment much on it's authenticity or taste. My other friend had the sampler, which seemed like it was pretty much everything fried on a plate. I'm a little surprised the plate wasn't deep fried, too. All in all, I wouldn't go out of my way to go here, and based on the food I'd give it 2 stars, but the service was great and the waitresses were very accommodating. Very good food. Friendly staff. That being said, there are no signs at the entrance stating that masks must be worn. The owner is helping with tables but does not wear a mask. Most of the staff wear masks, although I have seen them worn below the nose and even on the chin. About 1 in 3 customers don't wear masks. They apparently are not concerned about mask mandates which would imply that they aren't concerned about their customers health either. I'm not a prude or and alarmist, but the mandates are for everyone, not just a few, and if everyone did their part in this crises, I believe we would be much better off. In summary, good food, good service, no masks required, and I will not go back as long as they continue to ignore the mandates. If it weren't for the fact that this restaurant doesn't want to comply, I would give it 4 Stars. However, because of their non-compliance, I'm being generous by giving them 2 stars. read more
