85°C Bakery Cafe, a chain with more than 1000 stores around the world, has achieved what Paris Baguette can only dream of: the corporation has figured out how to guide its franchisees as they bake sweet and savory goods at volume, to ensure uncompromised quality set by the home office. I'm fond of 85°C's viennoiserie, especially their brioche (both plain and filled), and I'm a huge fan of their croissant and strudel. But my favorite thing at 85°C Bakery Cafe is their version of Macanese Po Tat (Portuguese Egg Tart), which resembles Chinese Dan Tat, but uses a laminated crust, instead of the short crust used in Hong Kong. My only question is: since 85°C Bakery Cafe is a Taiwan-based company, is their decision to leave a Chinese egg tart variant off the menu a matter of cost or customer preference, or is it a political statement?

Just found out this location will be closing permanently on 12/19/25 due to rent being too high. So sad to see it go since this was the first 85 in San Diego to open. But a worker did say they're planning on opening a new location somewhere off Convoy sometime in 2026. But for now the closest ones to me will be in the UTC mall and in Mira Mesa.

Always a solid choice for cheap but tasty Asian baked goodies. Love the variety!! Lots of parking.

Mango peach bubbly and yuzu lavender bubbly
    Trevor T.

After eating Chef Jun(highly recommend) we decided to get something to drink and ordered a mango peach bubbly and a yuzu lavender bubbly. Wife was a little disappointed that they didn't have any egg tarts, but they was closing soon and only had two people working so she was understanding. My wife loved her drink choice and I loved mine! The bubbly is similar to a soda, but the mango peach had little pieces of mango at the bottom. I hope it's healthier than drinking a soda. I just watched a Tik Tok of a cardiologist saying soda is one of the leading causes of heart attacks. That spooked me a bit because I LOVE soda. It is one of the joys of my day having a soda. I have been trying to cut down though or replace with tea or sparkling water. They also recommend diet and exercise so going to go walk the dog and do a workout that chat gpt suggested to gain a 6 pack.

I love this bakery ! The prices are amazing. The quality of the food is even better. The caramel coffee smoothie is delicious. I've always had good fast service here. I highly recommend stopping by and giving them a try!

Service was fast and friendly. Red velvet was good also had the strawberry cake. Good flavor but not my favorite frosting texture. Girlfriend loved the salted caramel tea she had. Almost didn't make it out of the parking lot.

Got three drinks two salted iced green teas and then a salted ice caramel coffee all three drinks were 75 percent full. I know this because of the spacing and how the salted foam normally touches the plastic top, I just want what I payed for nothing more and nothing less.

85 Degrees bakery had so many Asian inspired selections! Their mango cake was so delicious, fluffy and richly flavored! Not really meant for sitting but plenty of outdoor seating at this mall or great to go!

I often come to this 85 location to get my Sea Salt Jasmine green tea drink. It's a hit or miss depending on who's making the drink. Not the cleanest location I've been to either. But that's not the problem with my visit today. Why advertise on the app as well as your TVs about a promo if you guys are not going to honor it? "Free cookie with purchase of ANY sea salt drink." When I ordered my drink and scanned the app, I asked about the promo and the cashier said only included for sea salt coffee. That's not what the app or tv in their store said, and I even showed her the promo details that's listed. She goes and asks someone in the kitchen and comes out with the same response, refusing to honor the promo even with three giant trays of cookies behind the register. I wasn't going to make a scene at 9am over a cookie, and to a cashier who's only following orders. But whoever is managing this place needs to read up better on details of their promotions and inform their team better. Don't advertise stuff if you refuse to honor it and basically scam your customers just to boost your own sales.

One of my favorite bakeries with a great variety of Asian pastries and cakes! They sometimes are low in stock in the afternoon so make sure to go early. My favorite is the pineapple bolo bread and the cream filled buns are usually good, not too sweet, and are full with filling. The cinnamon twist and guava strudel are really good too. Their drinks are pretty good as well with my favorite being the strawberry mango smoothie which was perfectly sweet, creamy and refreshing! I also tried the new iced toffee latte and it was okay, a bit too strong for me and not sweet enough.

Always a large variety of yummy Asian pastries and cakes! My fav over the year is definitely the pineapple bolo bread. Their drinks are great and I enjoy the strawberry mango smoothie! Great service, can be slow as they're busy and sometimes some things are out of stock, but the checkout line moves quickly!

"Fresh bread!!!" I hear that in my head every time I see an employee bringing out a tray of baked goods from the back. Unfortunately they don't shout that any longer. At least not at this location. I'm actually updating my review from 2015! Man time flies... that means 85 Degree Bakery has been here for at least 8 years! They have a nice selection of pastries, breads, cakes, tea, and coffee. They have a lot of variety, I think most everyone will find something they like. Some of my favorite breads are the Brioche, Chocolate Croissant, Marble Taro Bread, Taiwanese Boroh Danish, and Guava Cheese Strudel. Everything tastes nice and fresh. As far as coffee, I like their Sea Salt Caramel Ice Coffee. The milk tea with boba is okay, but I prefer Bei Yuan or other places for tea. The cakes are good. They have so many different kinds. I like the Mango Creme Brulee and Black Forrest cakes. You can order a whole cake or by slice. They have indoor and outdoor seating here. Some of their seating is in need of replacing, but that can be expected after being open for over 8 years. This place is usually clean. Parking is not a problem here. Service is usually good, the employees are usually friendly. I can't ever remember having a bad experience here. They also have a self serve kiosk for drinks, which is convenient. I'm still a fan after all these years! 4 / 5: Bread and Cakes 3.75 / 5: Drinks 4 / 5: Cleanliness 4 / 5: Service 4 / 5: Overall

Cross Section of the Hokkaido Milk Mochi Mooncake!
    Joy J.

I made a quick stop in here specifically for the moon cakes! Thanks to fellow Elite Sung for posting about them, lol. The buy 3 get 1 free promo is going on until 9.12.2024, so get 'em while you can! I called ahead to be sure they had what I wanted, and they did. Woohoo! I pulled into the wide open parking lot about a half hour before they closed, and they still had a good amount of all varieties out. I grabbed my 4 among other goodies and made my way to check out. I got 3 of the Hokkaido Milk Mochi and 1 of the Pineapple Yolk. I bit into the pineapple one and was disturbed by the orange thing inside, which was actually a yolk?! I was not a fan of that one! It just did NOT mesh well with the sweet pineapple filling. I knew there was a chance I wouldn't like it, so I'm glad I only got one. The Hokkaido Milk Mochi, now THAT was my jam!! I was a tad too eager beaver when I bit into it, and the big ole mochi inside ended up in my mouth, like at once. I didn't mean for that to happen, but it was too late to put it back. I definitely liked this one!! I'll be grabbing more before the promo ends! I also got the Mango Green Tea because I love mango, but didn't want the one that had coconut in it. I liked this drink! The service was quick but only because I was the only one paying. The girl with the hat and hoodie on was talking to her co-worker about her personal dating issues, which I didn't care to hear. It's unprofessional if you ask me, especially if you're talking very loudly, which she was. She also didn't ask if I wanted a box or bag for my purchase. Every other location asks me, and I prefer the box so the bread doesn't get smashed in a bag. This is a convenient location on Balboa Ave. and if I'm ever in the area itching for some 85° goodies, this is where I'm going! Just hope I won't hear anymore bonus stories. =/

I was looking forward to eating pavlova and this was very disappointing! KOUIGN AMANN Very buttery and sticky! Crispy on the outside. Every bite was not dry, but chewy. There was this sticky and chewy texture that wasn't unpleasant, yet it wasn't fully flaky like a croissant. But glad it was not dry! The kouign amann was not as tall like others I've tried, but I preferred it this way because it was not dry. The last kouign amann I had from Bread Lounge was dryyyy. But bought mine at a coffee shop too. PAIN AU CHOCOLAT Crispy on the outside, but I must have toasted a bit more, so the outside was a bit more toasted than desired. Inside was good. Good dark chocolate. BUTTER CROISSANT Really buttery, flaky, crispy! Ate it next day, so reheated it in the toaster oven to bring a more crispness all around. Really enjoyed this! Adding butter and jam is so good! LEMON MERINGUE Meringue had a strong eggy smell and flavor, the lemon was tangy, but not enough to rid of the eggy smell and flavor. The tart was hard and almost stale. I took a few bites and threw the rest out. PAIN SUISSE Chocolate flavor. Crispy on the outside, fluffy like a light spongy cake inside. Enjoyed this! CUSTOMER SERVICE Got there early afternoon. There was only one person in front of me. Good service overall. Quick service. Hits and misses of the various pastries I've tried. It will not deter me from trying their pastries though, as the really good ones were really good! Would love to return! Especially for that Choco Chip Pistachio Cookie! LOCATED INSIDE ANOTHER STORE Located inside a store called Floral Palette, which is a floral shop and specialty gift store. Beautiful store! The sign is big, so you cannot miss it!

Went to Hinar to catch up with a friend! The line was long as usual, but it moved really fast…read more Shout out to Roseanne for being the sweetest and kindest worker! We ordered the Earl Grey matcha and Biscoff matcha, and both were super delicious. The service was great, and even though it was busy, there were still plenty of tables available. Great location, and I'll definitely be back!

I had an incredibly rough day and was looking forward to treating myself to my favorite dessert…read morefrom Hinar--the Biscoff cheesecake. Before driving over, I even called the store to make sure they had it. To my surprise, someone actually answered, confirmed they had one slice left, and even offered to hold it for me. My mood instantly changed. After the day I'd had, I was genuinely excited and headed there immediately. I arrived less than 10 minutes later, only to be told they didn't have it after all. To make matters worse, they claimed they don't even hold desserts for customers. It wasn't just disappointing--it was incredibly frustrating. If they couldn't hold it, I would have understood. But giving me false hope and having me rush over for nothing completely ruined the experience. What was supposed to be a small bright spot in my day turned into an even bigger disappointment. Unfortunately, this experience has left such a bad impression that I won't be returning. There are plenty of other bakeries in the area, and I'll be looking forward to trying those instead.
