It's a perfectly OK bakery. I've just had better. We dropped by after seeing enticing photos of their egg tarts! We got one of each type they had: a Portuguese-style and a Napoleon-style. Overall, I think the filling was super similar. The only difference wass in the shape of the crust. They were ok? I expected a more custardy, creamy taste, but it heavily leaned on the egg-y side. I kind of felt like I was eating a sweet steamed egg. The crust was flaky and pretty good. Probably wouldn't get again, but it's not bad. They happened to have a drinks BOGO deal going on the day that we went, so we got their Boba Milk Tea. It was pretty milky. Nothing to write home about, but not bad either. After landing back in San Diego, I immediately started craving the egg tarts we had while visiting San Francisco. I searched Yelp for bakeries nearby and ended up at Sunmerry Bakery. To my surprise they were running a special where the egg tarts were only $1 each. Sunmerry Bakery is a Taiwanese-style bakery chain known for offering a wide variety of Asian breads, pastries, and desserts along with drinks like teas and coffee. The location had a good amount of parking which made the visit easy. Inside, the layout felt a little overwhelming. There were so many breads, pastries, and promotional signs packed into a small space that it felt a bit overstimulating. They did have a lot of unique breads though. Things like mochi taro bread and mochi donuts in different variations of flavors. I was hoping to find something airy and light, and the pistachio bread caught my eye because it felt incredibly soft when I picked it up. Along with the pistachio bread we ordered two egg tarts. Service was friendly and the checkout process was quick. Our total came out to about $5.20. There is very limited seating inside with only a couple of tables outside. Unfortunately the pistachio bread ended up being a disappointment. It tasted like it had been sitting for a while and old, which surprised me since it was only around 10 AM. The pistachio cream filling also tasted artificial and the ratio of cream to bread felt lacking. It was basically a fluffy bread cut in half with a layer of cream squeezed inside. The egg tarts were the highlight though. I wish they were served a little warmer, but they had a nice egg-forward flavor that I really enjoyed. The flaky crust made them even better. Unfortunately this visit left me feeling like Sunmerry Bakery falls a bit lower on the list compared to other bakeries that offer similar items. read more

This Sunmerry is very convenient to get to in Kearny Mesa and has plenty of parking in the same lot as Costco Business center. This one is a little more spacious than Mira Mesa location with some indoor tables. I really like that Sunmerry will often run Buy one get one free BOGO promos on different drinks and this location participates. The drinks aren't the tastiest, but they're solid and good value. I haven't had anything amazing, but also haven't had anything terrible. The service is always fast and friendly. Reliable stop. I was emailed a deal for $32 Snoopy Fruit Paradise cake and I could not resist. Cake was beautifully decorated and coated in whipped cream. Whipped cream was light and sweet. Loved the fruity flavor from the fresh strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Vanilla chiffon cake was light and fluffy with a delicious sweet vanilla flavor. I had seen the bakery sign for years but didn't know what it was, but walking today (Sunday afternoon) because we got some ramen next door. Oh my goodness! I didn't realize it was a Japanese bakery!! Had I known would have come way before! It reminded me of a bakery I went to in Kyoto bullet train station, so very nostalgic for me. Even the set up and packaging kind of the same! I tried the green onion and sausage pastries and the tropical cake. I also had a cold brew black coffee. First the coffee was really good! I was quite surprised because I'm kind of a coffee snob. So thank you for that! The pastries were so delicious and so fresh! It really brought me back to Japan. There were so many others I wanted to try but I would be able to eat them all, so I'll just have to come back . I want to try the chicken, ham & cheese, ham & egg as well. Reliable bakery with a good mix of sweet and savory pastries! They had a decent amount of pastries left when I came in later in the day around 5PM. I am a savory pastry person and liked their Tuna Pastry and Frank Roll. They had a lot of soymilk both sweetened and unsweetened. I tried the unsweetened version and I liked it a lot! Very flavorful, but a bit pricy for the size. I haven't tried their drinks yet but they also look unique and refreshing. Plenty of baked goods to choose from. Mochi black sesame buns - 2/5. Overpowering amount of sesame vs the buns. We had to scrape some out of the bun. Sunmerry Bakery is an international chain bakery that originated from Taiwan. It reminds me a lot of Paris Baguette. I talked to the employee who told me they have been open since February (2024). This place is located on Convoy in between Costco Business Center and Target. There is plenty of parking here and it is located next to a ramen shop, Greek restaurant, and tea joint. First things I noticed when walking in was how clean the store looks and the lighting in here is pretty good. I had stopped by the night prior, but they were closed (it was a bit past 8:00 pm). I decided to stop by the next morning. I walked around the store and looked at all of the goods. Everything looked pretty good, so I had a hard time deciding what I should get. I grabbed a Strawberry Brioche Donut, Choco Concha, and Garlic Parsley Bread. I also ordered a Vietnamese coffee (medium) because I was unsure how it would taste. I chose the Choco Concha (4.5 / 5) instead of the Ube Concha because there were only 4 left. I figured if there are only 4 left, it must be popular (and good). My instincts were correct. It had a nice crisp outer coating, bread was soft and tasty, and it had a delicious chocolate cream filling. The filling consistency closely resembles the filling you find in a Ferrero Rocher (hazelnut chocolate). I really enjoyed it. The Vietnamese Coffee (2.75 / 5) was just okay. The color looked good and I was hoping it would taste as good as it looked. Unfortunately, it was a bit diluted / watery so it tasted bland. I've been on a quest to find good (outside of home) Vietnamese coffee. I think I'm just going to have to continue brewing at home lol. I mean I could be wrong or maybe it was an off day. I'll keep a look out to see how others feel about the Viet Coffee here. The place is pretty clean and they do refill the breads and pastries that they run low on. As I was writing this review, they brought out more Choco Concha. I like that they decorated the place for Halloween. I think families with kids and big kids (like me, lol) appreciate the effort. They have a stamp rewards card which is nice. Service was good, the guy that helped me was friendly. I now have an alternative to 85 Degrees and Paris Baguette. Sorry, I don't think I'm ordering Vietnamese coffee from here again lol. Sunmerry bakery had a tempting BOGO deal for black friday this year so we decided to go. I had the milk tea boba (70% sweet) and my partner ordered the jasmine green tea with salted cream (70% sweet). The jasmine green tea was refreshing although the tea sweetness tasted closer to 0-25%, and best enjoyed mixed completely. The original milk tea tasted at the expected sweetness level, and had a well rounded, not a complex, black tea flavor. The selling point of this bakery was truly the bread over their drinks. I updated the review to 5/5 solely on the strawberry brioche which had a satisfying real fruit flavor and buttery crust for a reasonable price. I can only imagine how good it would have been fresh on the day I bought it. 10/10 would come again to try another bakery item! read more

Black Sesame Milk Tea 10/10 - rarely do I see this on menu at other places that sell milk tea so I had to order it. I regretted only getting a medium. I liked the convenience of this bakery. Neighbor of Kearny Mesa Target in Othello. Tried their cakes, pastries and breads depending on your preference. The Barista makes real good drink and super quick. Love their, Sunmerry strawberry matcha drink. Very good, right amount of sweetness and flavor is not overpowering considering matcha is bitter. Came here one Saturday morning between 10am and 11am. There were quite a bit of options for pastries out. I could see that they were still prepping and stocking up for the day. It was pretty quiet and occasionally an employee would pop out to stock. There were so many options that I had a hard time deciding but I kept it safe with a chocolate filled croissant for my child. I decided to get myself a Vietnamese Coffee. It was ok, but I would probably try something different next time. Over one year, I have been coming to this bakery for excellent bread (10 of 10) and fun time boba. The boba pearls are usually fresh and chewy, just the right texture. The tea is just decent-good, I would give 7 out of 10. HOWEVER, this Wednesday 11-12-2025 was a disaster. I ordered a few things online ($46.90), paid online, got an email that order did not go thru....Hmmm. I called 3 times with phone number listed on my email which matches the Yelp phone number. No one picked up. So I drove to the store, they did not receive my order.... They also did not have some items I had placed on my online order. So the cashier credited my order and put in what the store has available. I also added 4 cream puffs, $2.25 each. She only put in 3 cream puffs in the box. I also ordered a milk tea with boba separately. By the time I got to the car and started drinking, I realized there was no boba in it. My boyfriend and I went to Day 2 of the Grand Opening last Saturday. We were expecting a really long line. Much to our surprise, there was no line when we got there at 9am. There were a few cars with people waiting (it was a bit chilly), but other than that, no lines. We got out of our car close to 10am when they opened their door and were numbers 7 and 8 in line. I liked how they handed out numbers to guarantee our spot (people just love to cut in line!). I thought how they handled the Grand Opening was very organized. I met the owner and employees while waiting for the bakery open. Apparently the pastries were baked at the main location in Mira Mesa and brought to this store for packaging/selling. The first 100 customers received a free insulated tote bag with a $25 purchase and also a $5 voucher to be redeemed by 31Jul2024. Other customers only received the voucher with the $25 purchase. Spending $25 was a piece of cake, no pun intended. I loaded up on my usual favorites, the sea salt buns. I was sad that my other 3 favorites (taro mochi bun, custard bun & tuna bun) weren't packaged yet and the wait was another 30 minutes. We tried to wait but ended up leaving. I tried the red bean mochi bun, which I have never tried before and really liked it. My dad likes it too, so now there's an addition to my favorites list! Stopped by for a latte and picked up a pastry. Grab a tray when you walk in and take to the counter to pay. I picked up a Portuguese custard which was fairly authentic to the ones I had in Lisbon. The almond croissant was pretty lack luster. Next time I'd opt for the Japanese cheesecake. Service was meh. Seemed like she wasn't happy to be there. Didn't ask me how I wanted my drink and put over ice. The matcha latte I wouldn't recommend. read more
