Stopped in for a drink and was informed by the bartender that the manager saw my girlfriend "stumble" on the way in and said she was not permitted to order a drink. The funny part of the story is that this was our first stop! What she did have was high heels that caught on to something on the ground while she was walking and caused her to stumble. Very rude and stupid! Ask some questions and find out what's going on before you make judgements from a far! Talk to the person... find out if they actually seem intoxicated. As an attorney, I completely understand that a bar has a responsibility not to serve those who are intoxicated, but given that she had not had a drink yet all day, this was not somebody performing their duty, this was someone making a spot judgment from across the room about a woman who stumbled because she was wearing heels. We came on a Thursday evening. I so wanted to love it here. It got two stars because it did have a nice ambience. I was so looking forward to a nice meal and was sadly disappointed. We started our meal at the bar where we had cocktails. I had a gin drink that claimed to be a cucumber gin cocktail, but was really just a glorified gin and tonic with a couple shaved slices of cucumber as a garnish. They do offer a 5 to 7 happy hour so it was half-price so all in all it was worth it. At our table we ordered several appetizers (there was 6 of us) the pulled pork flatbread was mediocre at best, the calamari under seasoned and extremely chewy. The tuna roll was tiny, not extremely tasty and no pizzazz whatsoever. I think it was most disappointed in my main meal. I had a New York strip steak that was supposed to come out with mashed potatoes but I opted to get brussels sprouts instead. It also came with onion rings. I don't think they put any type of season whatsoever on the steak. They tried to mask that with a little A1 steak sauce but that's always a bad idea. The steak itself was cooked correctly a nice medium rare, so I was pleased with that even though I only ate about five bites of it. The brussels sprouts that they sent out were just cut in half and basics just boiled, without any salt pepper or again seasoning. Blah!! Last but not least the onion rings. They were tempura battered but again no salt in the batter. The onion rings were bland and flavorless. All in all as you can probably tell, I was extremely disappointed with my meal. read more

A bad parody of itself with tasty food... Average to slightly above average; the food was tasty but about 15% higher in price than I would expect for a restaurant of its genre. There was unfortunately nothing good that stands out about 86 West. It's just a nice neighborhood place that has tasty food but an annoyingly *pretentious (the dictionary definition fits perfectly) vibe. As someone born and raised in Manhattan I am no stranger to going out to nice places and I feel that the aim of the place is quite literally to pretend to be something it's not. They fancy themselves a high end place to 'see and be seen' but fall way short by virtue of being 'snooty' because they feel they are "too cool for school", this is painfully obvious and kind of painful to watch. The staff appears to have little to no experience dining at truly fine places themselves (just a vibe) and acts like they are just 'tolerating' your presence. This is obviously their interpretation, maybe from watching movies or possibly even the 'higher-ups', of what a "fancy" restaurant is. The truly finest restaurants, at least in NYC such Daniel/LeCirque which I have had the good fortune to be able to eat at, are very friendly and make you feel great when you're there and smile when you walk out. They know that good food only goes so far and their job is to make you feel great. This goes for lower priced fine establishments as well. Of course you can't completely blame the 86 West staff as individuals, even though there is never an excuse to be rude. I'm sure they are interpreting a corporate culture, why else would it be so pervasive? What they are in desperate need of is a field trip to the kind of restaurant that they would so obviously like to be. My suggestion would be to go to Balthazar or Minitta Tavern in Manhattan(for example), those restaurants are fancy and have very fine food and for well over a decade are completely happy to see you...always. They cost about the same as 86 West yet are worth a 90 Min drive to get there from Bucks county,(Hint to 86 West: it's not just the delicious food). I think that they need to really look at themselves and maybe even rename themselves as well, using the address as part of the name is tired and used up, it was cool in 2001 but indicative of trying way to hard to be cool in 2015. It would also be a great way to tell people "we are ready to happily serve you delicious food", because they are not quite saying that now. Anyway as far as the food goes, I had a very tasty burger with blue cheese and caramelized onions as well as some other good stuff, it was delicious! With regards to the sushi; it was heavy on rice and light on fish, the sauce was heavy on sugar. This was also true regarding my fiancés Brussels sprout appetizer, they would have been perfect with just a teaspoon less sugar in the sauce. The kitchen at 86 W. is guilty of doing exactly what Kraft and Nestlé as well as local Chinese takeout places do with the 'too much sugar treatment'. Sugar is essentially used to fool the pallet into thinking something is more tasty than it really is, the strategy works less and less as people become more savvy about what they eat. Fortunately this is only on some of the dishes and could be easily remedied. My fiancés steak was over done, but that was her fault so I cannot comment on it, her fingerling potatoes with truffle oil were delicious and we ate them with great efficiency. In summation I would say that this is a definite possibility for dinner/drinks if you are in the area but don't expect an amazing culinary experience. If your aim is to have sushi pick one of the higher rated sushi places as it appears that the sushi is just an after thought even though it makes up like 25% of the menu. Don't take 86 W. too seriously and it probably won't disappoint you, bring good company and if the weather is nice eat outside and you will probably have a pleasant evening. read more

Named appropriately as this restaurant is now eighty-sixed from my list of acceptable eateries in Doylestown. Despite a reservation we were greeted with the news they were a little "backed up" and would have to wait. Backed up is what we should have done, right back on to the street. When it became apparent that I was about to protest were were unceremoniously escorted to a high bar-side table. It was loud, poorly lit, in the heavy traffic lane near the lavatories. It was obvious something cobbled together to avoid any conflict. The napkins, silverware were thrown down on the table by what I assumed was a manager, as she was decades older than any other employee. Small plates arrived stacked loudly to the corner of the table in the same fashion. There they stayed serving no purpose until I moved to place them at the bar. The plates had more amiable personality than the "manager". One of the group was a vegetarian. The menu seemed to attempt to be accommodating to the dietary restrictions, but the availability and quality of the remaining options told a different story. Food was mediocre at best. Prepared from frozen processed sources at the more typical worst. Sushi options were disappointing as well. While visually appealing they was an "everything including the kitchen sink" quality to the selections. Finding a selection that showed off the distinct flavor of any of the ingredients was impossible. The most appalling item of the evening was the dirty rag displayed at the reception area that was then used ad infinitum to wipe the tables. After several minutes there it was obvious the clientele the venue catered to was that of a younger less discerning singles crowd. The lavatories were in short disgusting. Both men's and women's were in need of cleaning. In my trip to the men's room I feared the young patron bracing himself with one hand on the wall in the adjacent urinal would soil my shoes with at least one bodily fluid. He had obviously been over served. This was not my first time at 86, certainly my last. For the life of me I am not sure what prompted me to try again. read more

Place smelled like old, stanky fish (not the aroma we are use to in a place that serves sushi). 2. Forgotten - We were seated in the back of the restaurant and forgotten for over 30 min. Instead of spending time and $$ with friends there, we migrated asap to a better location. 3. Stolen - Had to go to bartender to find our waiter. A woman that worked there asked if our waiter was gay (trying to identify him I guess??). Since we'd only just met the guy we had no idea. He finally came back to the table and brought our check. Days later we reviewed our credit card account and found that the waiter gave himself a tip - without our consent. He literally stole money from us. My wife and I have been trying to like this place since it is one of the few places to eat in town. Busy place which is great. The food is in need of a makeover. The wine is over priced. Canyon Road is the best you can offer a glass? The beer selection is poor. To say the least. Especially with easy accessibility to better beers now. I have to agree with Zoey, I'm very surprised at the negative comments about this place. My family lives in Doylestown and when I'm back (pretty often since I'm only in Philly) this is one of our favorite places to go. The thing I like best about 86 West is that its pretty versatile. My mom and I are pretty adventurous while my brother and Dad are very much so not. We can all come here and get something we are VERY happy with. I would say dont leave with out trying one of the flat breads, or the brussel sprouts. For my part I love sushi, I think it's as good here as it is anywhere I've been in Philly. The Vegas Roll, Lobster Blast and 86 West Roll are favorites of mine. The more basic rolls are good too. I always leave satisfied. My dad LOVES the burgers and the lobster mac and cheese and he pretty picky. The seafood bisque is also a big favorite and done perfectly, rich and creamy. My brother also loves the burger or other sandwiches here, as well as some of the smaller plates. As I said the great thing about this place is that you can come with a family who likes all different things, or have a great girls night with Sushi and wine. We made a mention to the buser of our concerns and my girlfriend heard the server question our concerns because of what I ate which was only because we don't really want to make a fuss because we order what we order because the server never came to check with us about our concerns even as he dropped the check. I was asked to join my bff, her mom and her mom's friend for lunch in Doylestown and didn't ask where, was not told until we all met up in D'town. I was a bit disappointed, as there are other great choices, like Ooka, but I think the older women were not Sushi fans. Anyway, it was my friend's treat, so I went with the flow. First of all, the back bar area was just TOO dark. This was the middle of the afternoon and we could barely see the menu in the light. I actually like the atmosphere...and the gas fireplace gave off a nice warmth...I just think that for daytime...brighten it up a tad. Since I was not that thrilled with my sushi choice from the previous visit, I thought I'd play it relatively safe. The Roasted Beet Salad with Goat Cheese Fritter sounded great. It was okay. The goat cheese fritter was not hot, as you would expect a fried fritter to be, and the goat cheese inside was sort of gritty...not smooth and creamy, nothing special. The roasted beets/walnuts/field greens/dressing were okay, but again, I would have liked better lighting so I could tell what I was eating. So my safe choice for an entree was a hamburger...medium, with fries. Utterly unremarkable. For $12, I expect high quality beef, and this was ummm NOT. The burger had no flavor whatsoever, was cooked properly only on one half and was grissly. Though my guests and I didn't really discuss the food much (a hint that there wasn't much to discuss), I didn't hear any oohs and ahhs from anyone. We ate, we talked, we left. read more

This actually might be the "best happy hour in Doylestown" like all of their signs say. The drinks were really good and the prices were about $5 during happy hour (which is from 5-7). The sushi was good, but the rolls were pricey. The signature rolls were about $17.50 and house rolls (like the California roll) were $9. The rest of the menu looked pretty good, but was on the smaller side (about 10 burger options and 10 entrée options of fish and steak) and prices are on the higher side. i am absolutely outraged! I have spent over 2 hours in this restaurant in the company of my rude and moody waitress, Tina. Upon my arrival, i was greeted by the hostess and wait staff who was anything but welcoming. I waited over an hour for my food that was subpar at best. As a culinary arts personnel i could have personally created a better meal for me and my 10 friends in half the time! My check could not be split so i spent 20 minutes doing the math for the individual costs all while being rushed by my waitress. The over all experience was not enjoyable and i do not plan on returning! The only upside of this was the wonderful music that i could barely hear over the extremely loud people around me! read more

Big fan of 86W. Reasonably priced drinks, great atmosphere, lots of options on the menu. Love the mix of indoor and outdoor seating as well as the bar or table seating. The only thing preventing me from 5 stars is the outdoor bar area and the smoking. There needs to be a place to keep the smokers away from the doors and traffic of both 86W and now SSSS. We were there last week and the smokers were everywhere and one thing we noticed was the amount of smoke that would be going up into the new bar area in the open area of the State Street Steak and Seafood bar. Keep smokers to the far back portion of the outdoor area that could be the solution. read more

I was in town visiting, and this is clearly a favorite of the locals for good reason. The vibe inside is Asian fusion, with a bar and tables outside. The menu is pretty extensive- and I really liked that. I tried the sushi sushi combo and it was great. I'd recommend the hummus, sangria, and tuna crunch roll. You have to check it out! read more

I have only eaten here outside--the patio is so nice on a spring (or fall) day! I'm usually a fan of going here for lunch--not necessarily dinner. In my opinion, it can be a bit pricey so the lunch menu is perfect. I usually get a salad and a sushi roll; my favorite is the vegetarian roll, but the tuna roll is good as well (these are the ones that are around 10 dollars for one roll). I have gotten the Tuna Crunch roll before as well (a bit too much sauce in my opinion). It's a bummer that they stopped serving the beet and goat cheese salad, it was amazing! read more

My husband and I like going here for drinks. We like the back outside bar. As for food the oysters are good, the tuna sushi is good, the burgers are really good. The only thing I've had that was ok was the fish and chips and the crab cakes, which were okay but not for the price and size. read more

My fiancé and I had the pleasure of having lunch here on a beautiful Sunday afternoon on the outdoor patio. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, the food was delicious, the beer was ice-cold, and the place is spotless. I had the portobello cheesesteak, and it had so much flavor that I didn't even miss the meat. We will be sure to return whenever we are in the area.
