I mean this place is ok with the styles of shirts but overall I just felt out of place. I felt like I was being watched the entire time and not to mention I noticed the workers standing within couple feet from me. WARNING: Don't expect "used/vintage" prices for this store's products! How does this place warrant anything other than 2 stars? Granted, their logo and the line of t-shirts that they sell sporting their store logo is sugoi kawaii (super cute), but the prices on their vintage clothing is SUPER, DUPER EXPENSIVE!! Enough to make me wanna drop all 6 of my credit cards, run to Ala Moana Center, and go pick up a $500 Louis Vuitton bag. They sell these USED/VINTAGE shirts for 2-3x more than what you would've paid for them new nearly 20-30 years ago. What the ...?! I know this is Waikiki, but give this local, hardworking kama'aina wahine a break!! A lot of the nostalgic and vintage stuff they sell can be found at many other thrift shops on this island: Goodwill Industries, Savers, Mo'ili'ili Thrift Shop, University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Women's Campus Club Thrift Shop, etc. For much, much, much cheaper. I refuse to pay $20, $30, $40 or even $50+ for ONE vintage t-shirt I can get for $7 or less elsewhere. The place is a hoarder's dream, by the way. Clothes, vintage pop culture junk lining the walls, aisles that can only fit one anorexic person to go through theme, etc. This place deserves an "Extreme Home Makeover." No elevator to get to here and you climb some stairs to get to this place. RACIST! Against non-Japanese customers (I'm Filipino, my husband is Italian, Irish, and Spanish). We went here recently (last week) on our annual trip to Hawaii. As soon as we entered, a sales lady came up to us and asked "Can I help you?" as if it were a scene from "Pretty Woman"- with an air of "What are you doing here? You shouldn't be here." My husband said "Oh, we're looking" but noticed that she only asked us that question (did not ask any Japanese customers), while she kept a short distance away from us, watching us. I was looking at the dresses, which were on sale for $19.99. They were mostly the long frilly kind, which I suspect most of the Japanese tourists get their ample supply of (the culture as a whole does not like getting tan, associate tanned skin with being a laboror; evidence of this is seen with the multiple layers of clothing that they wear, the hats they wear, and the arm covers that they wear). As I moved toward the other areas of the store, my husband noticed the same lady was following us, so he told me to go to another section to see if she would follow us again. She did! My husband was getting irritated, and I noticed another sales lady watching me too (whilte folding some t-shirts). So, as we were leaving, the owner who was at the counter, asked if there was a problem, and my husband proceeded to tell her that the sales lady was acting as if we were going to steal something. The owner said she would talk to her. Our intention was to browse- possibly purchase something, not to steal anything. We come to Hawaii once a year, spending money by shopping, eating, renting, going to the attractions, etc. Why in the hell would we steal something?- WTF Also, I should mention that I was wearing an Iolani dress (retailed $90), carrying a Coach bag (retailed $150), and my husband was wearing a Tommy Bahama silk shirt (retailed $120)- it's not like we looked like we were homeless. I couldn't wait to write an update to show how bothersome the whole experience was to us. Especially since we are tourists in a state that we love, and in our 8 trips here (7 on Oahu), have never experienced such a racist encounter while shopping. I loovvveee this store! It's so inviting when you walk by. The Christmas lights and music along with the license plates on the stairs scream, "Come up!!". I was walking near the area on my last night in Waikiki and just had to see what was up there. This store is like a nightclub for t-shirts, you can't help but jam to the music as you look through the piles of shirts. They have such a wide variety of types of cute shirts, dresses, jeans, accessories and more. They also put a CD of the mix playing in the store in your bag at the register (heeeyyy). They are all helpful and sweet, too. We ended up shopping around for an hour and coming out with a couple of things. read more

I really wish it were possible to give 0 stars. I was a regular customer here when I used to live in Hawaii. I moved to SF 5 years ago and was visiting back for the holiday. I had two friends with me visiting from out of state too. I was really looking forward to sharing 88 Tees with my friends visiting especially since one of the girls is from Japan and loves vintage. Shortly after being in the store for only 5 minutes, the owner (and I say this knowing because its the same woman in the photos plastered all over the shop), approached my friend and said "What did you put in your bag?" and accused her of shoplifting. My friend was wearing a very small crossbody bag and of course told her "No go ahead and search me if you want" Instead she had this sales girl hounding on us. We noticed the owner going around scolding the workers telling them what to do. Now, I used to shop at all three 88 Tees locations. I haven't been in Waikiki area in 5 years, so I didn't know that they now only had two locations. When I was asking the sales girl where the old closed location used to be (a similiar vintage shop "SPARK" was next door) because I wanted to take my friends to both 88 & Spark, she said she knows but wouldn't be able to tell me where it was. She said she knew of other similar stores but can't tell me. I thought that was weird and kind of rude. I simply just wanted to know because I was having a hard time remembering the location of it. Their old store was exactly next door to it!!! I later learned that Spark also moved--RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE 88 TEES LOCATION I WAS AT ON KALAKAUA. and yet the girl COULDN'T TELL ME???? LIKE THIS WAS SOME "BIG SECRET" ARE U KIDDING ME? My friends were really excited when they first came in and ready to make purchases, but after the horrible rude treatment of accusing my friend of shoplifting, and awful customer service, I will never come back here again and will never recommend 88 TEES to anyone. There is much better vintage than their overpriced bs anyway run by some cheap chinese lady. read more

First off, I live in Hawaii and have visited 88 tees a couple of times. They have some cool original t-shirts, most of them to cute for my taste though. The reason for the 1 star review. I would give 0 stars if I could.. I have met the owner a couple of times in the store. So when I saw her and a couple of her employees at Saver ( like Goodwill ) on Dillingham with shopping carts full of aloha shirts, assorted clothing and tees...I could not believe it. I bought a aloha shirt from 88 before and was told they get it from special vintage wholesalers. No you dont. You buy from Savers and resale things that are $2-$10 for $60. Rip off! I will never recommend 88 again to any of my friends... read more

An eccentric and hip casual wear store for guys and girls that also is a good alternative to the conventional souvenir tee. The building is set off a busy street in Waikiki adjacent to big designer names. In order to get to the store, you have to take a single flight of stairs right as you are entering the main entrance. The entrance is pretty inconspicuous and nondescript compared to all these other large high end shops' storefronts. I would not have noticed it if just window shopping and walking by, but I was actually actively looking for this place with use of Google maps. The clothing here is kind of interesting and worth checking out. There are definitely a good number of odd or goofy designs, but there's so many prints and types that you'd likely find something that you like. I personally don't like buying tacky stereotypical souvenir tees since I wouldn't likely wear it again. Here is a great alternative option to find something with Hawaii or Honolulu referenced on your clothing without being super touristy. The staff is a younger crew, but they are pretty helpful. They helped dig through mounds of clothes since it can be pretty challenging to find your exact size or print since its a crazy disorganized. Overall, I found it was a fun experience, and I left with a really cool tee. read more

Back in my early college days I would frequent 88 Tees about once a week. Nowadays, I rarely even peek in when I'm in the area. I feel like the style, trendiness, and quality of the clothing has gone down quite a bit. The clothes are starting to look cheesy and a tad generic with the "88 Tees" logo just slapped on wherever space was available -- it looks sloppy. They've lost some creativity points there. The graphic (printed) tees, however, are still cleverly cute, but sadly are not too practical. Maybe if I was 16 or 17 again they'd be a little more appropriate. Prices are a little outrageous at 88 Tees, so I'm glad they offer some kind of discount for locals... Even if it's only a 10% Kama'aina discount (every little bit counts). I'm pretty sure the high set prices are due to the fact that they don't make their own clothing (aside from printing their own shirts). They buy cute pieces from stores like Urban Outfitters and slap their logo on those garments... Gross. One thing I really like about this place is their vintage stuff. You can find some cool vintage jackets and bags here. Oh, and the accessories are pretty cool and worth it. All in all, 88 Tees is a cute urban clothing shop that sells vintage bags, shoes, and shirts. They also sell their own brand of shirts and a bunch of other brand clothing with their logo slapped on. I don't really mind if this place is considered touristy; they have some awesome, unique designs. I don't wear a ton of graphic tees, but whenever I go somewhere new, I always like to pick up a shirt from a local brand if I can. I think it always makes for a good conversation piece, having something you can only really get if you travel to that destination. And 88 Tees is a way better option than purchasing a generic "I love Hawaii" shirt like most tourists will do. Like others have said, the store has good music, good customer service, and I can't complain about the free swag I get every time I make a purchase. Fun little t-shirt shop up a stairwell where you feel like you're transported into some mega-Japanese shopping experience. I think I was the only American there, but the staff are really nice even as everyone jumbles up all the shirts looking for that one they really want. Let me explain the rating: This place would actually have gotten a 4 Star if they were only being graded on thier interior design (cudo's to you interior design lady)! That's not the case! Shirts were rather overpriced, 74.99 for a cheap aloha shirt (next door higher quality aloha shirts saled for 64.99 - it's not a bargain, but hey it's Waikiki. (1 star on price/quality ratio). The "Vintage" Aloha shirts were probably aloha shirts that were bought 3 years ago and returned, only to sit in the back room and be sold as vintage today! The average price for one of these shirts you could normally buy at the Salvation Army for just $2, retailed for a small markup of approximately ~$600 and yes, your a sucker if you already bought one. Service! I heard the term "racist" being thrown around to describe the staff. Racial Profiling, might be a better word. But regardless, I didn't get good service. I asked about taking a look at the vintage aloha shirts and the girl looked me up and down (white guy with a flat brim "dickies" hat, board shorts and a Brazil shirt on) with great effort pointed at the shirts behind the counter and said - "see" and flipped over the price tag that showed $870. Great talk. I can't say that she profiled me incorrectly - no, im not a sucker that will spend near a G-note on a shirt just because Justin Beiber bought one. And yes the security guard starting profiling, watching, and following me around the store after I looked at the price on an aloha shirt and started laughing. (1 star on service) Unfortunatley I don't go to a retail store based on interior design - its about product and service - so you 88 Tee's get a 1!!!! Keep up the good work? read more

Stopped by last year when visiting, stumbled into the store because of the music...we obviously had no idea what we walked into. Last year we left with two awesome shirts that we've never forgotten about, and a CD. Fast forward to now, scrambled around Waikiki looking for this store...AND we were treated with the same hospitality. I normally don't write up reviews, but I had to write a review for 88 tees :) When you first step into the shop, your led to walk up a mysterious flight of stairs that are uniquely decorated with various license plates. Curiosity begins to strike as you ascend the steps, questioning what you've gotten yourself into. The moment you reach the very top, your world is turned upside down and you've ultimately come to realize one thing: you've reached T SHIRT HEAVEN! The sounds of funky, rhythmic electronic jams blasting to the beat of your heart while you shop are up-lifting. The variations of colors, size, style of clothing apparel & accessories are like no other shop in town. The friendly and warm vibes of their staff is downright chill and makes anyone feel welcomed. Little did I know i'd find myself shopping in this awesome little shop during my stay in Honolulu for hours! I knew this place was legit and copped brownie points when I realized a video crew was filming the absolute awesomeness of this shop. The staff knew I was a trooper when they realized I had been shopping from the beginning of their film set to the very end. After checking out beloved 88-tee goodies for friends, family, and myself of course, they racked up even more brownie points on my scale by throwing in extra goods, including their summer mix tape, tote bags, stickers and a super cute makeup bag. After endless shopping in Honolulu in typical souvenir shops, I am glad I found 88 Tees. I'll definitely send all my SF/Bay Area friends your way! This place is amazing. The shirts here are super rad and the service is even better. Let me count the ways: A t-shirt here caught my eye early on in my trip, and characteristically returned several days later, one hour before leaving Waikiki, to purchase it. Obviously, I was super frantic and ready to begin CAREFULLY tearing through the mens t-shirt section when one of the salespeople (possibly the manager) noticed my apprehensive and overwhelmed expression, and came to my rescue! He even rallied two more salespeople in my search, and it was found within minutes! I was out of there within minutes and incredibly grateful for it. They even gave me 10% off, a fantastic shopping bag, a cellphone charm and a mixed CD of the store's awesome Hawaiian tunes! I was super impressed. I might as well take this opportunity to mention that this location is miles better than the Kuhio location. The staff here are much more welcoming, cheerful and friendly, whereas I felt the staff at the Kuhio location were a bit pushy (which is not great in a store with this type of selection) and made a few awkward comments to us about sizing... While at their other location, I found myself drawn to a Reyn Spooner Hawaiian shirt exclusive to 88 Tees. It had the Pink Palace, hula girls and Ya-Ya! Vintage looking with a modern twist. But it just didn't feel right. The size was wrong (way too big) and the background color (brown) wasn't appealing. So on my 2nd and last night, I wandered down to Kalakaua after a search on yelp showed they were open late. I mean really late. WooHoo! They had better sizing (loose but not oversized) and shirts with a better background color (blue). So I am now the proud owner of a very cool Hawaiian souvenir. read more

This place is amazing! Not only are the clothes really cute, but they're also very well made! I ended up coming back multiple times just because I couldn't decide what I wanted to get out of the HUUUUGGGEEE selection XD. The staff was so helpful and the owner is an absolute doll (I really can't say enough nice things about her, she was so sweet!). She took care of me in every way imaginable. This store is a must see if you want souvenirs! Right when you walk through the doors the first things you notice is the staircase that catches your eye and the music (their music is the best!). Once upstairs they have hundreds of shirts on the wall for a decent price (19$) which are almost all 88tee brand. Then on the tables are all different types of brands and shirts which are a bit more pricey. They have other stuff too but mainly shirts. The workers there are SUPER nice!! They're really welcoming and at first they might seem a bit pushy but give them a chance! They're not the type to annoy you about their "cool styles" and "cheap prices", they actually care enough try get to know you a little, not just get you to buy their stuff. The vibe of the whole store is really chill. The lighting is pretty dim but it's a relaxing light to be in. THEN HAVE AIR CONDITIONING, which is a super life saver in the hot Hawaii summer air. Also, did I mention that the music is the best?? My cousin and I were singing and enjoying almost every song. If you ask the cashier, they'll give you the last month's mix. Clothing here is cute and like what others said, hard to spot outside of Hawaii. Certain items may be pricey like the Adidas bags and the Junk Food tees, but the 88 Tees merchandise is usually quite affordable. The only thing that kinda bothers me is that sometimes when I go there, I get stared at (in both a good way and bad) and it may feel awkward that 90% of the people in the store are Japanese, so it helps to go with a friend or two. A friend of mine used to work there and apparently the manager says to be on the lookout for "non-japanese" people because they may steal something, no lie. read more

i went to 88 tees past this twice week on vacation - such a cute and trendy store - definitely has a modern vibe on it. warning - the music is LOUD but it adds to the ambience lol. i didn't get to see avian there, but it was super cool to check out the store mentioned on terrace house. a lot of the clothes is really cute and has cool designs i hated and loved how messy the sorting of the clothes was as the same time. it's fun to dig through but also kind of maddening when you want something specific. service is very nice, they give free stuff at the front when you purchase! my only regret is not buying more clothes tbh but i have a reason to go back now! read more

Walk up a teeny, tiny, narrow flight stairs and come to an immense overwhelming feeling brought to you by a large room filled with tees on racks, tables and along side their cabinet walls. Where do you even begin? And can someone turn a light on in here? This spot is much worse than going to a thrift store and shuffling their racks. I could not begin in one area without my eyes darting somewhere else. There should be a warning sign- 88 tees may cause exacerbated ADHD. Visited this store a couple days ago with my brother and nine year old daughter. We all left saying the exact same thing, "That was the best store I've been to here. Ever." Been coming to Hawaii for years and while I've walked by those awesome stairs with all the Christmas lights, I've never taken the time to find out what it was all about. Wish I would've taken a look a long time ago. Awesome shirts, awesome atmosphere and awesome customer service. Richard was a cool guy and super helpful. Made my daughter's day when he hooked her up with a handful of stickers. And I won't lie, he made my day when I got hooked up with the super catchy music cd that was playing throughout the store. We will definitely be coming back for a mini shopping spree on our next visit!! read more

I found this place through Yelp and wanted to check it out since I'm just visiting HI for a few days. This place is full of different graphic tee's, great souvenir shirts that are actually wearable and not cheaply made or crappy-looking designs. My friend and I came in and it was super quiet because they were filming but a lady was helping us find sizes and hats. I honestly wanted to buy everything, they were so cute! When I was checking out, the lady was super nice and gave us free stickers and CDs. She put everything I bought in a big reusable bag and made sure all the sensors were off. Do you need to write anything else after how cool the staircase is? Coming from Vancouver it was sweet to see a British Columbia license plate found on there too. But if you need more of a reason for a 5 star rating then that, they have some pretty sweet tees. A little bit of a dig but if you have the patience you can find some gems. I ended up buying a few Mickey Mouse shirts there. Too cute to pass up. I was so glad we decided to walk by on our last day of our trip. I was totally feeling the music as well and they threw in a cd and a few extra free stickers . Who doesn't love freebies? Richard was the bomb.com. Came in here around noon and staff ignored me. They're pretty unfriendly but were talking to other customers who were tourists. The store is a little messy and the price for shirts is super pricey. I got two shirts and they came to a total of $50 plus tax. I wanted to try on a white shirt but you can't try on white shirts? Also the lady kept following me around as if I was going to shoplift. They have a small sale section of damaged shirts in the kids section. Now they stock over-sized shirts, too. My maternity self could have used something that big a while back but now I'm not in the market. They had some kids shirts marked down to $10 from $16-$19 due to tears or other defects. I didn't bite though. I did buy several of their cute 88 Tees socks. $5 each or $12 for 3, they make a good, lightweight souvenir. My faves were the pair with their logo hula girl holding a papaya in front of a rainbow with the match being the logo boy. The place was swarmed with Japanese tourists so I couldn't stay long.
