About once a year, I do get a craving for a doner kebab (here - gyros). The difference is, usually I get my kebab fix at 3am in my local kebab shop and I don't use a knife and fork to eat it. This does not make it bad food, by the way, I think meat, pita and salad with tzaziki is one of the most delicious things on the planet... it does make it a little bit odd to order it on a plate and eat it in a restaurant though! The gyros here was very delicious - good creamy tzaziki in particular. So why 3 stars? On gazing about greekfest and popping my head in some other restauants - and having eaten alot of kebabs - I don't think it was particularly special. This neighbourhood probably has an abundance of excellent gyros. Garlic mash was quite special though. I was disappointed by the menu choices (sparse), and dismayed by their reaction to asking for olives (bemusement) - really? in a greek restaurant? Then the final nail in the star coffin - charging $9.50 for Ouzo. Sorry, but that's expensive, needlessly so. Not really a 'greek taverna' atmosphere, more of a greek island playing euro house music atmosphere. Still undeniably Greek! I just ordered from this place on Grubhub and just a few thoughts: 1.) A slice of Feta for my village salad - very generous! 2.) Grilled zucchini that looked like the leathery skin between Bruce Jenner's ass cheeks. 3.) The cold yellow piss of Sasquatch - oh wait that's Lemon Soup! 4.) I used to frequent this place a lot when I was going to UIC. It used to be this very down to earth bar/grill that catered to college students with good prices that a broke college student can afford. After they expanded , all of a sudden they started to charge a premium for everything. Also, after the expansion, the owners got this " My crap don't stink" attitude. Don't get me wrong, the food and the ambiance is very good(hence the 2 stars), but the owners have to realize, that their pompous attitude has and will chase their regular and potential customers away. read more

So we came into this restaurant with high hopes. I mean we r in Greek Town. Well we had about 9 ppl in our group and as i walked in the music to me sounded like i was in a night club instead if a Greek restaurant. The bar was empty in a Saturday night which was odd to me because all the other greek spots were pretty crowded. Ok, so i look at the menu. I find it strange that i cant fibd grilled octopus. Every greek restaurant down town has this on their menu! I order two skewers a chicken and pork and ask for Greek Potatoes. The waitress says we dobt have greek potatoes on the weekend. Wait. What!!! They only serve fries or mashed. Are you kidding me?? Ok well i get the mashes. Ih ya, and my order was the platter with salad. after the waitress took all our orders we never saw her again. The bus boy was a great runner tho. Forty five minutes goes by before we get our food. The three of them come out and start asking everyone is this your order. What!!! Im a bit annoyed by now. I get my plate and i get 2 tiby skewers with a big pike of smashed red skin potatoes. Thats it! No ome even came in this restaurant to sit at the bar in the hour and a half we were there. Everything about this place is good. Great place to eat lunch or dinner. Food is very delicious. I choose between the Penny's Salad and Shish-ka-bob sandwiches. Greek fries are a must. I enjoy this place! It gets very crowded on weekends for dancing to greek music after 10 pm or so, but before then it is a great place to have a drink or a meal. Great authentic Greek food. The staff is very friendly. Service is pretty good. My only two complaints are that it is mostly a bar after 7-8pm and it gets pretty loud, and the portions are fairly small, especially given the prices they charge. Yes 5 stars. With a disclaimer though.... I'm quite biased. You see, once upon a time there was a show named Cheers. "Where everyone knows your name" if you will. Well, Muses is my Cheers. I've only been there maybe a zillion times. Ok, not that many but you get the point. A few musts. If you like iced coffee, please order a Fredo when you go. Quite possibly the best liquid on earth. You can order it with no sugar, medium, or sweet. A MUST! Perfect on a warm day sitting outside on their patio. Their food is solid. I've never really had a bad meal there. Chicken is quite tender and flavorful. The souvlaki is always a good choice. I recommend their Greek fries which is just regular fries with feta cheese on top. A good combo. You can't go wrong with something friend and feta cheese. Lately on their daily specials they put a couple of wraps as options. I highly recommend. All the Greek restaurants on this strip seem almost identical, so to try something new my friend and I came here for dinner on a Friday around 530. It's smaller than the big famous restaurants, and doesn't do as much of the "Greek" decor. Just looks like a casual restaurant/bar with sports on and strange euro music. Didn't have much atmosphere so I got a little nervous at first, and not seeing a crowded dining room made me cross my fingers and hope that the food would be good! The menu actually has more Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influence rather than just straight-up Greek. It's a smaller menu than you'll find at the other Greektown joints, with some original choices. We each got a glass of wine (presented nicely, in pretty rounded glasses with mini-carafes alongside), and my German riesling was nice and sweet. I ordered the chicken kabob, and when we saw our huge plates coming we were like "holy crap, did we really order all that food?" My kabob platter had 5 big pieces of chicken, a salad, pita with tzatziki sauce, and a separate plate of rice. And wow, did the taste surpass my expectations! Chicken was juicy and tender, with a delicious crisp-char on the outside. I could only eat three pieces since there was just so much of it! The salad was simple, mixed greens, red onion, olives, tomato, and feta, but the dressing was subtly tangy and very appealing. The pita was warm, and the soft fluffy rice went great with the crispy chicken. My friend felt similarly about her souvlaki platter. I ate as much as I could. I only wish I could have eaten more! The only thing I didn't like was the service. After the food came we had a very hard time trying to get them to clear our plates, and then it took them almost 20 minutes to bring the check. Server was standing in clear sight of us, just watching TV. I had to just creepily stare at her until she happened to look at me and then gestured with my wallet. That was kind of annoying. But not so much to take away from how great the food was. Sounds like this turns into a really different place at night! More like a Greek nightclub with food? Trust me at 6 pm it is nothing like that! At the early dinner hours it is pretty quiet but you will get a great meal! read more

I've been there several times during the late hours for their dancing. Today, finally, I went there for their food. Since it was Greek Festival, everything was served in plastic plates with plastic-ware. It was kind of cheap and unappealing. I had the Creek salad (there, called Village salad) which wasn't very big, but came with a baguette and was very tasty. My friend had their 9 muses panini and really liked it. We also ordered tzaziki (which i didn't feel like making myself) and it was super tasty. Our server wasn't very personable and the service was below par (hence 4 stars, not 5). We chose 9 Muses because there was outdoor seating. Try the tomato basil appetizer with an order of feta. Very refreshing start to your meal. Also try an "interesting" white Greek wine as described on the menu. I was tempted to ask the oddly-serious waitress if she could recommend any "boring" wines. Warning signs of a bad Greek restaurant: 1. No lamb on the menu. 2. No moussaka or other traditional Greek dishes. (Souvlaki and gyros aren't enough.) 3. No Greeks. 4. Few diners. I should have known better than to eat here, if not right when I walked in the door, at least when I looked at the sad, sad menu. There are certainly a lot of Greek restaurants in Chicago's Greektown. Perhaps 9 Muses is one too many. My platter certainly *looked* appetizing. The Greek salad had nice presentation, but was unfortunately quite flavorless. My pork chops looked big and sumptuous, but were actually THE WORST PORK CHOPS OF MY ENTIRE LIFE. They were so dry, it was like I was eating jerky. These chops were so tough, I injured my elbow trying to saw through them with my steak knife. (One of my dining companions ordered pork kabobs that were also overcooked. Who runs the broiler in this place? He should be taken out back and beaten with spatula.) My friends raved about the french fires at 9 Muses. I found them soggy, uninteresting, and no better than that of any hamburger joint. One of my companions ordered the calamari (predictably deep fried almost beyond recognition) and they certainly smelled good. But I was horrified to taste squid so old it smelled rotten. I hope my friend didn't end up getting sick from eating this spoiled fare. Other dishonorable mentions: lousy beer list, poor ambience, and lukewarm service. The only saving grace to this place was that it wasn't too expensive. My share of the bill was only $24. A better meal elsewhere would have cost more, but certainly have been worth it. All I could do after eating here was drive home, feeling disgusted, yearning for a shot of good ouzo, and praying for better meals to come. If you want Greek food in Greektown, I can think of half a dozen better places. Easily. read more

9 Muses is a fantastic cafe/bar/restaurant. This isn't categorized as a Greek restaurant, but I think it comes closest to the Greek lifestyle prevalent in Greece today. Make sure and try the Frappe. It's an iced, blended instant coffee. It's total rocket fuel. Do not attempt to drink after 4pm or you won't sleep. Their menu is prolific for a place that many people consider a bar. It's menu is filled with very seasoned and tasty beef, pork, chicken and vegetarian dishes. The food is also reasonably priced. I have been going to 9 Muses for a very long time. If you're looking for a European vibe, it's a great place to visit. If you go Saturday night, make sure and bring your shovel, there's enough Eurotrash in there to fill a small land fill. If people talking on cell phones bother you, don't bother. It's not uncommon for a person to be talking on 2 cell phones and cigarette in their mouth. I've read reviews about poor service if you're non Greek. This is false. Everyone that goes in there gets real slow service. It's that whole European "Work to live not live to work" thing. They drew us in with the patio. And aside from the constant sirens (not Greek sirens to go with the muses--emergency vehicles) the patio was a lovely place to be. It drew in a diverse group at lunch, quiet and not crowded. Service was spot on, very attentive. Dining companions and I ordered off the daily specials. Sides are hard to find on the menu (the layout of the small boring font on yellow paper tried our patience), so just trust me and get the garlic mashed potatoes. This was my first stop upon arriving in the city. Its a regular haunt of a good friend and so here found ourselves for an early dinner. Coming in with a regular does give you a bit of an advantage, but I'm pretty sure everyone would have been just as nice and friendly had I come in by myself. After all, I'm a pretty swell guy. Mike, behind the bar, quick with a greeting and very friendly. We sat at the bar and scanned the menu (if it's online, check it out. I just trusted the choices my friend made). We got the Meza, a selection of meats, pork, gyro and chicken. and it was fantastic. Usually there would be a weak runner in the race, dry chicken or bland pork, etc. But not here, each one was prepared as if it were the only thing going on the plate, a splash of fresh lemon juice and we cleared the plate. We got a side of the greek fries, purely for scientific research, since neither of us is supposed to be eating fries and we had plenty to manage with the Meza. They were great, flavorful and nothing was over done. Trust me, the food was on point. It was so good that I just quoted Guy Fieri and I don't hate myself for it, that good. Atmosphere could make or break a place and 9 Muses has that in the bag too. The staff were friendly and the patrons were too. We stayed way longer than we needed because we were chatting and making friends. They have a full bar, and coffee (I had a Greek Coffee which is like a punch in the face with a velvet boxing glove) and we split a piece of cheesecake. Unbelievably bad service, from the thinks-she's-super-hot hostess to the surly bussers. The music was absolutely blaring, and with just two other customers in the whole place I asked them to turn it down so our party could hear each other across our table. I got stared down like I'd asked them to kill the cook. Actually, not a bad idea. The food was horrible. Tough dry cold lamb, undercooked vegetables, prepackaged pilaf mix. Everything overpriced. Menu was more like the gyro place down the street than a sit down eatery - and I wished I'd just gone there. The look of the place is straight out of 1985...in Long Island or New Jersey. Two words...Fontina Peppers! That's the only reason I goto this place. It's an appetizer that they offer and it's amazing. I find myself going here just for that dish more often than not and I believe they're the only resto in Greek Town that offers it. It's two roasted red peppers stuffed with feta cheese served over balsmaic vinegar and olive oil. The rest of the items are predictable Greek dishes. I also have to agree with one other reviewer that there are not many vegetarian friendly dishes. Overall a great place to go with friends for a late night dinner before a night on the town. This is absolutely the Coolest and Hippest place to hang out at in Greek Town! It offers everything you could want!! Excellent Coffee! Fantastic Food! Any Kind of Drink you could ever imagine!! Wonderful Desserts! I must continue by saying that it has very beautiful outdoor seating with lush and beautiful plants and flowers that make you feel like you are in the tropics on vacation! Went for lunch. Had the Chicken Schwarma ... A couple of problems.. number one, hard to eat the pita. Way too much creamy dressing and difficult to bite without it making a mess. Overall tasty, but I think I should have requested the salad version. The chicken itself was seasoned well. As for the sides, I opted for the oven roasted potatoes, but they didn't mention they were covered in lemon, which made them almost inedible - plus I was expecting them to be a bit more well done. Price for 2 came to 21.00 without tip. I'd go back, but someone please remind me to go the salad route next time. The same chicken schwarma in salad form with a balsamic dressing sounds like it might be a much better option. Service was incredibly fast, but then again, it was pretty empty for lunch on the day we were there. Oh, how I love me some 9 Muses! I've been here more times than I can count on my right hand (Only four fingers!) and I've loved it every time. I've only gotten one thing and that's the Chicken Caesar Sandwich with Greek Fries. It has been superb every time! Their outdoor eating area is so nice and it's a wonderful little place to go on a summer evening. The staff is friendly - I'm pretty sure it's only young Greek gals - but either way they are friendly and attentive. Also, I saw Jim McMahon eating here one time, which tells me one thing... I ate here earlier this week with three of my friends for the first time. For appetizers, we ordered the saganaki and spanakopita. I was surprised that the saganaki wasn't lit on fire tableside, but maybe that's just what I'm used to from usually going to the same Greek restaurant. The spanakopita was delicious, and the Greek fries we got with it was also very tasty. I was planning on ordering the Meze platter as an entree, but the server warned me that it was way too large for one person, so I appreciated her honesty. I was shocked that they didn't have lamb here either. Isn't that a Greek restaurant staple? I ended up going with the Shish Kabob, which was sooo good. In addition to the mound of marinated pork, it came with 4 pita slices, a Greek salad, and a choice of a side (I got rice). I've been coming to this place for over 10 years this time I called and ordered 2 salads with dressing and xtra tzatziki on the side. Picked up my food paid drove 20 mins home since I don't exactly live close to this restaurant and realized there's no dressing and it's kinda hard to eat a salad with no dressing especially when you pay $40 for 2 salads. Try to do the right thing called and explained the situation and she said she can't do anything except take a DOLLAR off for my missing dressing. So I asked for a manager she said no mangers were there and she started talking to some guy in the background then she said yes the managers name is Steve but Steve is not here!? Lol so I asked who is the manager you were just talking to she said John so I asked to talk to John, now some lady picked up so I said I'm waiting for John then she said there is no John lol She said my name is Katherine and I'm the assistant manager she said we can give you credit for next time, I explained that this doesn't help since I can't eat my dry and cold chicken salad now without dressing. She said sorry I can't do anything about it. I hope the owner of this place is really enjoying reading reviews about his own business , managers and waitstaff that is supposed to represent your business! This place is surprisingly awesome. Living in the West Loop, I had walked and driven past this place several times but hadn't walked in maybe because it has less than 4 stars on yelp, maybe it's because it looks kinda old school. But, on one rainy day, I gave it a try, lured in by the awesome drink special they advertised on the sidewalk chalkboard. The grilled chicken (really flavorful), Greek fries, and draft beer selection were all awesome!! $4 draft beers M-F and $2 skewers on certain days. Awesome. Traditional greek food, in huge portions, not meant for the light eater. Here we started with some Saganaki, the flaming cheese, and feasted on a gyro plate and chicken kabob plate. Food was good, not exceptional, and was way too much for us to finish responsibly. Members of the staff seemed very young, almost too inattentive for my taste, but I won't complain. The decor doesn't feel greek, music playing through the speakers was contemporary pop and dance hits, so I would not recommend this place if you want a real Greek experience. Seating by the bay windows, open to the busy street outside, seems like a nice touch - though it's noisy and curious passersby want to see what you are eating. I feel conflicted giving this place 2 stars, because the food actually wasn't bad. It should get at least 2.5 stars for that, but oh well. Whether a 2.5 star place is a 2 or 3 star review is always a judgment call and I'm going with 2 stars for this one. Like another restaurant I ate at once in the area, there was an incredibly rude and pretentious vibe here. I don't know if that's just a "West Loop" thing. It's like these restaurants want some sort of status that they don't yet have, so they act really rude and snobby to compensate for it. Anyways, our waitress was really rude and bitchy. She had an European accent, which I assume is the sole reason why she got hired. I could go on about why I got such a bad vibe, but there is no real point. Anyone else who has experienced the gross West Loop vibe will probably know what I'm talking about. Food was fabulous The greek fries with feta are to die for...I have been dreaming of them. The pita bread was super fresh along with the hummus and vegetables. The gyro was also delicious... I was not a huge fan of the saganaki and I think it is because they do not bring it out while it is on fire. (That sounds silly but I am being serious) By the time that the saganaki made it to our table it was hard and chewy. Wednesday night specials are $5 vodka drinks so my friends and I were livin la vida loca and I will definitely be visiting more frequently. (On Wednesdays) The service....it could improve.
