Sitting here on a very warm weekday morning sipping on a very refreshing salted caramel Italian soda and while working with Carly Simon's Moonlight Serenade in the background - it's 9am and the sun is beaming in as cable cars on Columbus take passengers to work. After celebrating new years at Fort Mason, we overslept and ended up waking up close to noon. We had to find something that we could grab and go and I'm sure glad that I found this place on Yelp. This is a smallish cafe/bagel shop with a good amount of seating for its size. The menu had a lot of standard sandwiches and bagel options in addition to a good amount of unique combinations that we've never thought would go together. We decided to venture out and order the Point Reyes bagel which had a complimentary combination of cream cheese, red onions, cucumber, tomatoes, with a guest appearance of pastrami. Never had this combo before and was certainly curious. Presentation was great, nice arrangement of colors, all the toppings were distributed evenly and looked very appetizing. Once I took the first bite - I was in awe on how delicious this combination was. Even better, the bagel was one of the best I've ever had, period. Good sized, crunchy on the outside, light and soft on the inside. Each bite had a combination of freshness, creaminess and protein and saltiness from the pastrami. I highly recommend checking out this place for breakfast/lunch. I will definitely be back to try their other bagels and sandwiches. Their coffee is awesome too. The associate made on coffee on the spot while we ordered at the register. This place is a must go! read more

If you're gonna have 13$ sandwiches without cheese, and have the nerve to try to charge me and my friend "30 cents each" per candy from your free candy jar, (i had one, gave one to my friend, then asked if it'd be tasteless to grab one more and the massive attitude given from staff was astronomical.... like sir we all know that whole jar cost you 4 bucks at maximum at CVS,) actually label your jar as anything BUT a clear glass jar that everyone calls the free candy jar and label your business as a sham read more

Stumbled upon 901 Columbus Cafe and had a good first experience. I originally came in for some coffee and a breakfast pastry, but was welcomed by so much more including plenty of sandwich choices on their menu, gelato, and drinks. Service was friendly and efficient; exactly what you would hope for when you're on the run in the morning. Overall, a positive visit. Stopped in on a weekend morning and there were several patrons inside enjoying their breakfast. I opted for a Zebra Mocha and a croissant. The Zebra Mocha was a strong mix of White and Dark Chocolate incorporated into an iced mocha. It was a little sweet for my liking, but I think that was to be expected based on the composition of the drink. The croissant was fresh, warm, and flakey. A great way to balance out the sweetness of the Zebra Mocha. The only downside is that pricing was a little high for the items. 901 Columbus Cafe is a cute spot. They have seating inside for patrons to enjoy their food and, as mentioned, service was kind and quick. There are a lot of tasty looking treats and menu items I could see myself trying in the future. My goto item at 901 Columbus is the breakfast burrito. However, on my most recent visit, I decided to change things up and try the WAFFLE. It came topped with an inordinate amount of whip cream and some blue berries. So delicious! The service here is rushed but good. They will gladly answer any questions you have about their offerings. The decor in here is decent, but nothing spectacular. Note - this place ain't cheap. Expect to pay $8 for a cappuccino with oat milk. And it won't be a large cup. That's quite high, even for the city. Note #2 - if you get the BLT, be sure to ask for the bacon to be crispy. read more

Got the BLTM (BLT with mayo) while waiting for the show at the comedy club next door to start. Crispy bacon, fresh tomato and lettuce, on nice warm panini pressed bread, and the mayo tied it together quite well. It's an inviting space with a well-priced menu, could see myself being a regular if I lived close by. Highly recommend! This place is incredible and much better than any of the other local spots. My girlfriend and I live in NYC and have been here for a long weekend. All the other local spots were mediocre and service was terrible....not here! Highly recommend, great coffee, great service and the breakfast sandwiches were great! I was charged 8 dollars for a cappuccino with oat milk. It was a teeny tiny cup, and I was flabbergasted. I had paid without asking how much because I am used to 5-6. When I got two dollars change on a 10 I was blown away. Not a cute coffee shop, a regular simple cafe with sandwiches. The fancy coffee shop next half a block up with legit fancy coffee machines charges 5.50 for a large. Gouging for the hell of it is not ok by me. They lost my business. Best beer/wine happy hour in town with delicious pastries to boot! This is a sweet spot on the corner that's an easy meeting spot for locals and visitors alike. A great place to people watch right in North Beach, they have great deals on draft beers and house wine. Plus, you can get a little slice of cake to accompany it. Goodness, the caprese was a boat full of mozzarella, not that i'm complaining. It was perfectly toasted and served nicely and simply on a plate with a napkin. I had brought a to-go box to take half of it back, but it was too addictive, I ended up eating it all. The staff are all hardworking and very sweet. read more

I love this place so much! Just a basic coffee shop that is so fulfilling. If you want fancy shop maybe not for you. But if you want a friendly staff that makes EXCELLENT breakfast, coffee, salads, sandwiches, this is the place! I love the food here so much. It's made with love and effort. We usually love coming here- just recently we ordered 2 cafe lattes ($18.10 total) and got charged extra just for getting it iced, charged for syrup ($1.50) and charged us for an extra shot we didn't ask for. Very friendly employees, great tasting sandwiches and awesome happy hour! First came here when a pint was $1.50 over a decade ago. Although they are now $4.50 for happy hour, the beer is top notch, currently Elysian Space dust Ipa, 8.2% so you definitely get your money's worth! Good place to stop if you just did the Lombard street walk from the curvy part down to north beach for a well deserved beer or two! read more

I have to be honest this wasn't my first choice of cafes that were nearby when I was feeling a bit hungry. But the XOX Truffles nearby was closed in the middle of the day despite their hours saying otherwise so I came here instead. I'm not usually a big matcha person, so I tried the hojicha soft serve instead and it was honestly really good. Rich roasted flavor, not overly sweet, and something different from the usual ice cream spots. I also sampled the black sesame and definitely want to come back for that next time. The staff were friendly, patient, and happy to explain the menu since it was my first time there. Everything came out quickly and looked carefully made.

It was a little too gloopy, and towards the end I didn't feel like continuing. If I were to reorder, I would not have the avocado or the spinach in the burrito, and I would have potatoes and eggs instead. Other people in the group had bagel sandwiches which were really gloopy as well (half the avocado squirted out of one), multiple napkins were ineffective at keeping it under control. They ended up using a fork. For all that, it was a little overpriced for a to-go bagel sandwich and the ingredients were not quite what was ordered via kiosk. The poke bowl needed more sauce for flavor; it barely covered the top layer of rice. Order at a touchpad. There is a seat for one inside, but it's pretty cramped. There are two tables outside, with room for two people each. It's also near St. Mary's Square, which is a very pleasant park for to-go outdoor dining.

SERVICE: JOE & THE JUICE gained a bad reputation in the Bay Area pre-covid for flagrantly disregarding city law that prohibits retail businesses from going strictly cashless. For good reason: Refusing paper and coin currency is defacto segregation against Black and Brown folks and the working poor and those on a fixed income who are more likely to be restricted to cash transactions. This is an unjust policy, refusing to take "certain people's " money and in my book equals BAD SERVICE. FOOD & BEVERAGES: Upon my return to the large JOE & THE JUICE location in San Francisco's Financial District - which I used to frequent most days of the week for years before the boycott - I ordered my signature drink, Americano + extra shot of espresso with milk. Now although J&J is wildly overpriced compared to other espresso bars and snack joints, the Danish (J&J is a Denmark import and not locally owned, so maybe they don't understand how we do here in the USA) ownership refuses to provide the paying customer options between 1/2&1/2, Whole Milk, 4% Milk, etc. It carries only 2% milk which is just above lightly flavored water. I always have 1/2&1/2 with my cofffee but not at J&J, despite the high prices customers pay. I used to stock this location myself with 1/2&1/2 out of my own pocket from the Walgreens across the street, which a customer shouldn't have to do. BEVERAGES: Well my Americano, honestly, was awful. Tasted like dirty dish water. Old stale coffee bean flavor only slightly diluted luke warm water. BAD PRODUCT. SERVICE: It appears JOE & THE JUICE ownership and management are back to their old tricks again refusing cash payment. I told the manager it's city law thay accept cash payment - payment equality - and he conceded he knew this is the law. I was given the excuse the cash register just happened to be broken and they were waiting repairs, but trust me as one who knows J&J very well this is just BS: they're told to tell customers or city inspectors this and cynically keep going on with their segregationist policy. BAD. BAD. BAD SERIVICE!

Not only were they delicious, but their unique shape made them stand out from the usual versions we've tried elsewhere. The steamed dumplings were equally impressive, soft, tender, and just as juicy. You'll want to bite into them carefully, unless you're like my husband and decide to pop the whole thing into your mouth at once. Another surprise favorite was the dan dan noodles. We loved that the noodles were served warm. Most versions we've had elsewhere are closer to room temperature, so this was a very nice surprise. Once mixed together, the dish was so flavorful. Our food arrived quickly, but midway through the meal we realized we had forgotten to order a vegetable dish. We added the stir-fried eggplant which unfortunately seemed to throw off the timing a bit and didn't arrive until near the end of our meal.
