One of my favorite neighborhood restaurants just changed their menu from Japanese to Thai, leaving me without a nearby spot to enjoy my long-time favorite karaage. My wife and I tried V Cafe for the first time yesterday. She ordered the Unagi Bowl, which she liked very much. I ordered the Japanese Fried Chicken appetizer. While it's not exactly the same as karaage, it was close enough for me. Just as importantly, in a neighborhood where more and more restaurants are serving heavily salted wings, this dish won't push my sodium intake up to "headache" level. The food was okay. The breakfast burrito was priced right. However, the eggs were hot and steamed the avocado, and I am weird about hot avocado. It was a little too gloopy, and towards the end I didn't feel like continuing. If I were to reorder, I would not have the avocado or the spinach in the burrito, and I would have potatoes and eggs instead. Other people in the group had bagel sandwiches which were really gloopy as well (half the avocado squirted out of one), multiple napkins were ineffective at keeping it under control. They ended up using a fork. For all that, it was a little overpriced for a to-go bagel sandwich and the ingredients were not quite what was ordered via kiosk. The poke bowl needed more sauce for flavor; it barely covered the top layer of rice. Order at a touchpad. There is a seat for one inside, but it's pretty cramped. There are two tables outside, with room for two people each. It's also near St. Mary's Square, which is a very pleasant park for to-go outdoor dining. read more

It's grilled to perfection and had a lot of meat! Great flavors and sauce and so filling. They also have boba and spam musubi and other breakfast sandwiches and snacks and items. This time around I went to get their poke and I have to say that it's one of the best around the downtown area. The portions are filling and generous, the toppings? I attended the Craving Chinatown event today hosted by the Chinese Youth Center. It was a well organized event with a variety of cafes, milk tea and restaurants. I decided to try a Chinese take on the Shrimp Tempura. The tempura coating was soft and easy to chew. The shrimp tasted fine. It was definitely something new and it wasn't too greasy. For the amount that I eat during a meal, one ~$15 dollar of Poke at V Cafe could feed me for two and a half meals. I guess I also don't have huge portions each meal, lol. Just discovered this spot yesterday and I've already been twice. Yesterday I had the salmon sashimi and today I went with the dragon one. I prefer the dragon sashimi but they're honestly both delicious. It is about $20 more or less for one sashimi but they're honestly huge and sooo good it's worth it. I used to frequent onigilly and they are more affordable but I prefer the flavor of these sashimis. They're soooo good I can't express it enough. It's a small shop with a couple of tables outside, kiosk self-ordering and small staff. I waited maybe 10 minutes yesterday (only one worker) and 5 tops today. The lady that assisted me today was on top of things and really nice! I'm probably gonna take a break from this after today but I'm already looking forward to my next visit. It's a nice balance of flavor and texture that goes with the familiarity of 2 things that make you think "why didn't anyone else try this before" Dragon onigiri - took a bit longer to make. Maybe don't order it if in a rush. It's flavorful though, not exactly the freshest fish but it's still good to me. I'm not exactly a big expert on fish but I still enjoyed it. Nice sauces and texture! Everything goes well. Only downside is the boba. Umm the tapioca pearls were way undercooked. I told her but because language barrier I'm not sure if it went through. I paid almost $20 for a bowl of poke bowl when other locations are less with bigger portions but worth it with a free boba drink. So if you calculate the boba drink in being around $5 dollar meaning the poke bowl can be around $15 then yes it's a good deal but I wouldn't come here just for their $20 poke bowl. This location is only Togo and the service is great. I will definitely come back to try their other items which might be less pricy yet I didn't fully check their menu.
