I went to 98 Pounds Buffet a few weeks ago for the first time with a friend. The restaurant is clean compared to other local buffets. As other reviewers have mentioned, the buffet is a little more expensive than others, however, the food was fresh and there were more than enough items to select from in order to be satisfied. I go there very often, BUT! I must say, they have good and bad days. I recommend not going around 4 430 because the sushi guys go on lunch ALL TOGETHER which is dumb, at leat one should stay behind. This buffet is hit and miss, some very good, others awful. The biggest problem was that the steam table food was lukewarm. I got diarrhea before leaving the restaurant. Service was nice, but bathroom needed cleaning. I didn't have sushi, but that area looked good. In fairness, my partner, who ate different items than I did, enjoyed it very much. read more

I have tried most of the Chinese buffets in the Twin Cities, and this one is one of my favorites. The unique thing is that they have about 15 different kinds of sushi on the buffet. Certainly that's is the biggest draw. Dinner is considerably better than lunch, with more exotic sushi and a rotating list of items like crab, stone crab, clams, and other exotic items. But even lunch is a good value, with 2 shrimp dishes always on the buffet. If you are a fan of chinese buffets, this place should be on your list to try. Worst customer service ever by one of the female staff in the sushi section. The male waiter have no customer service at all. We were stopped for taking ice cream while I was getting an ice cream. The waitress said I cant have an ice cream. The little girl who served on our table asked us we can have ice cream. We were 6 people, paid over $100, $17 each person for the food that doesnt deserve that anount on the Sunday evening. The sushi waitress who stopped us from having our ice cream was tremendously rude. And, the male waiter who I asked who is your manager have a big attitude to answer my simple question. DO NOT PAY $17 for shitty food they serve with no customer service at all. We paid for the buffet. It is our right to have the desert while it is available. The waitress had a huge attitude. The male waiter lacks face to face interaction with the customer when I was asking him something. They dont know how mouth to mouth words can divert their customers. Overall, the waitress lacks customer service. Going to tell everyone I know about this experience to stop going there. My rating for this restaurant is ZERO. read more

The reviews that say hit or miss are correct. My hubby loves this place whereas I mostly say "sure, 98 lbs sounds great!" to appease him. They have this fake crab cheesy something that I love but are always out each time we go so boo for me. I don't care for the sweet n sour as it's the really pungent kind. But, hubby would rate this as five stars as he likes the sushi type foods. read more

I like it better than the buffet on Lake Street. (I don't remember the name, but it was from my previous review.) Even though their selection wasn't as good as the Lake Street buffet, I still like them better. They had better selection on their sushi choices. Cleaner & nicer environment. Waiters were more friendly here too. The only reason I didn't give them a 5-star was: they didn't refill their sushi quicker. Amazing sushi and chinese here, there's a good selection of everything! Its about $14 per person mon-thur, and $16 fri-sun (adults), but worth it for the sushi! Also, the inside is very clean and classy looking, with booth seats and seating for larger groups as well. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this buffet. There was a good range of Chinese food and a decent amount of sushi. The nigiri is fresher than some sushi buffets in Minneapolis where you have to pay twice as more (Ichiban, for example). I tend to be picky about the cleanliness of Asian restaurants, but this one was great. We paid around $15 for dinner, and it really hit the spot. read more

Went there today and was very surprised to see the lunch deal on a Saturday was $9.99. Totally worth it. The sushi spread itself is worth that price. I had all 24 different kinds, then got a bunch from the actual buffet section. Great selection for that price, will be going back for sure read more

Four stars for a buffet. Seafood was well seasoned, meat wasn't too dry, fruit was fresh and sushi was pretty decent. The crawfish was surprisingly zesty, the Mongolian beef was cooked well, the sweet and sour chicken was a bit dry, the strawberries were sweet, the watermelon was juicy but not very sweet, the crabs probably weren't worth the effort, the gyoza really surprised me by being so tasty and just the right amount of crisp, the cheesy oysters weren't good but I had picked up the last one so it was most likely sitting out for a while, the sweet donut balls weren't coated evenly with sugar so I only ate one bite and left the rest. The sashimi wasn't cut to look pretty, so aside from not being aesthetically pleasing they tasted great. There are dozens of rolls but most are doused in spicy mayo. Luckily I'm a fan, but if you're not then there won't be a ton of options. Service wise I never expect a whole lot from buffets, but they always kept my water glass full and table cleared. Probably couldn't hurt to smile more. So, overall great restaurant for Chinese and sushi roll craving with some macha ice cream dessert. read more

I have been going to 98 Pounds for years......it's is amazing......my favorite sushi is the squid......they are consistent w/their menu, and the food is very fresh, great price for the quality of buffet! I've tried many buffets, and this place.....hands down wins on Taste and consistency! Love this place!! Thank You for all you do 98 Pounds! Every time we come here there's some new rule to nickle and dime you to death. You have to battle for the lunch pricing if you arrive anywhere near the cutoff, they charge dinner prices all weekend but don't serve dinner items of fully stock the sushi, and now they won't punch cards on weekends. I pay MORE for the same slim buffet but get LESS? If I have a punch card that means I am a repeat customer and I should be VALUED, not rejected. No one can even use those cards anyway because the hours they are accepted are incredibly restricting. TERRIBLE business model, 98 Lbs. Get a clue, when I cash in a card I bring more paying customers. The sushi trays are perpetually barren it takes ten minutes to get a glass of water, the main hostess is a grade A #%@!, and when they do make sushi it is rarely actual fish and rice, instead they serve up slab after slab of the same old boring rolls for you Round Eyes to gobble up and the only thing I like is the one male waiter who is working very hard on his English and is a diligent, attentive and an awesome server. Okay, I like two things, because Sunday after church it is full of really hot young Russian girls. This place is convenient for me but I'm not coming back. (8 Lbs., I've had enough of your abuse. The experience was ok, it costed about 17 dollars per person. About 15 choices to pick from and a good variety of sushi, most of the food was cold or dry even after being refilled. All-you-can-eat sushi is a good deal. But the rest of the buffet is terrible. They seem to have a large selection of seafood items as well but I am not one for crawfish or crab meat. Been there twice now, and would go back for the sushi but not touch the rest of the buffet. read more

I've been here with my hubby & youngest son quite a few times. I have to day that the traditional buffet items are average, but if you're a sushi roll fan THIS PLACE ROCKS! They have a HUGE selection of sushi rolls (which is what most people seem to come here for) that is being continuously prepared fresh, right in front of you, as you load up your plate! I'm super picky about my sushi rolls and I must say that this is really yummy & fresh for this type of setting (meaning a buffet....most of the time if there's sushi rolls you don't know where they're coming from!) It's about $10 for their lunch buffet and includes a beverage. Where else can you get great sushi rolls, with lots of variety, all-you-can-eat, for ten bucks?! I absolutely love this place. Me and my family have come here probably 8 or 10 times, and we keep coming back for their delicious food, wide variety, and huge sushi bar. Seriously, they have like 10 different types of sushi, more than I've seen at any other buffet. I've had sushi at that fancy expensive restaurant Crave and sure, their sushi's good, but it's the same price as going to 98 Pounds where you can eat all the sushi you want plus tons of other food and dessert. I've never had a bad experience yet and I've gone several times. It's a great place, you should definitely try it out. read more

These chef make sushi all day for buffet people but they make my sushi separately so it's fresh. I can spend time savoring on the delicious sushis at home and not have to smell like buffet food. The salmon there has delicious texture and probably one of the best salmons in MN. It's a little small but for the price it's a lot better than those bigger pieces because you get 3 for the price of 1. I've also never ate squid sushi until I ate at 98lb and it's the best I've had. After 98lb I went to other sushi restaurants and ate the squid sushi. They have harder and rubbery textures that it's not so good. I've been to alot of sushi restaurants but 98lb has the best squid sushi because it's so soft, it feels like creamy fat melting in your mouth. The fat of fish and seafood is healthy for you. Overall the squids the best sushi there. I also like the salmon and the eel. The tuna's alright but it's a must have for all sushi fans. They only raise the prices for the buffet people, otherwise it's the same for takeouts. Why? It's because Americans eat a lot and stuff themselves till they can't roll over anymore. It's a good price for me because my metabolism is high and I can eat 60 pieces at the buffet. In fact I even tip more because I don't think they charge me fair enough. I'm a fair and honest guy and this is my honest review. If you think about it, the buffet's the best bet because 75 cents a piece takeout is very very cheap! but you eat 60 pieces like I do? That's 45 dollars they should charge me but I'm glad the buffet prices came to a little over 15 dollars after taxes. However like I said, I rather buy 20 pieces and eat at home so I can spend time enjoying the food instead of the buffet smell atmosphere. read more

My favorite Chinese buffet where you can fit a semi (cab only) in the parking lot. The variety on the buffet is excellent and the price is fair. There's a stir-fry station and sushi section. Food is always fresh. The staff is great, too! read more

Arrived for lunch on Sunday 30 minutes after opening. EVERYTHING we tried was cold. The food on the buffet line was average except the butter shrimp that they brought out hot and fresh and delicious from the kitchen. The only way this place rated a 2 star was because of the sushi.
