I don't love suburban Chinese buffets, but this one is not too bad, all things considered. A bit more seafood than your usual buffet- some nice shrimp dishes, steamed fish, and even cheese oysters (!?!). The salad section was actually fresh with assorted greens and an interesting marinated cucumber/seaweed dish. Much better than the typical iceberg lettuce and gross tomatos you get. And of course your usual chinese buffet standbys. The sushi leaves a lot to expect but is honestly not bad for all-you-can eat buffet- the unagi roll was surprisingly decent. Skip this place! The people here are RUDE. For 3 people on a Saturday afternoon, $54 wasn't worth it. It took a while for anyone to take our drink orders, and their glasses are too small. We tried to hit Super Moon on a hungry Saturday night, but the line was out the door. So instead, we decided to try this place. The outside is not appealing, but when we arrived there were people there (usually a good sign) so we sat down. 2 adults, 16 year old, 10 year old, & 6 year old. The sushi was decent. I agree with the other reviews that it is comparable to other sushi. Stick with the rolls, the sashimi did not look or taste fresh. Adults & kids enjoyed a few pieces of the rolls. The warm food however, was horrid. Flavorless fried rice, lo mein was soggy. The general tso's chicken was over cooked. I actually spit out, yes an adult woman spit out into my napkin the sweet & sour chicken. How do you screw that up? It tasted old & rubbery. The highlight for all of us was the ice cream machine on the way OUT of the place! Many trips to the restroom that night followed... If you are looking for deep fried carbohydrates, this is your place! I wanted to avoid deep fried and pork so there were exactly two dishes for me - beef with broccoli and teriyaki chicken. The beef with broccoli had a very sweet gelatinous sauce (think corn starch) and the teriyaki chicken was ok. The broccoli was the only vegetable on the buffet. There is all you can eat sushi on the buffet. This is not the sushi found in a Japanese restaurant. The rice had the wrong sugar vinegar ratio - it was overly sweet. The ginger was pickled and all the sushi was made with fake crab or tofu skin except one spicy tuna roll. There is fresh (and canned) fruit. I love that this buffet is in my town!! The food there is the same each time I go, but I never get tired of eating there. My favorites are the butter shrimp and the fried ride!! The staff are also part of why I keep wanting to go back. They even have started to recognize myself and other family members whenever we are there. I frequent this place often because it's nearby after work and because I'm on the 98 pound diet. There's three things you can expect: number one, the crab legs to run out within five minutes of coming out from the kitchen. Number two, the guy who looks like he's practicing for next year's Smack Shack Crayfest eating competition with all the crayfish he's eating; that's me. Then lastly number three, hearing a Chinese flute rendition of the song My Heart Will Go on. The sushi, and almost everything else, is usually stale and the fried shrimp is usually soggy. Reminds me of awesome college years in Madison when Yummy Buffet was a treat for us poor college students. This place is great if you are training for a crayfish eating contest, if you have some vendetta against crayfish, or really like the song My Heart Will Go On. I come from a large Chinese family, and so it's often less of a headache (both in terms of the time it takes to make ordering decisions and the actual cost of the meal) to go to a Chinese buffet than to go to a traditional sit-down Chinese restaurant. That being said, this review is given in context of knowing what to expect from a Chinese buffet, having visited a large number of them in the past few years. 98 Pounds is one of the nicest looking Chinese buffets in the Twin Cities area...but that means it doesn't come without a cost. Although the food here is fairly good (particularly the sushi selection), the price for a meal is extremely expensive for a Chinese buffet, and it's not really worth breaking the bank to eat here when there are plenty of other restaurants that are comparable, if not better (I suggest Teppanyaki Grill in Minneapolis and Grand City Buffet in St. Louis Park). Two things that 98 Pounds boasts: (1) Punch-card for free meals...but I must warn you that the management is really strict about the "proper" use of the punch-card (i.e. not sharing the same punch-card among people) (2) Dim sum buffet on Saturday afternoons. This is the secret gem of this place, though, beware that it doesn't seem to be that much of a secret to the hoards of regulars who are very aggressive when it comes to getting what they want, when they want it. Ok, so this place is just that, ok. I will need to try it again at some point, but here's my initial review. I went for the lunch buffet (to go). As soon as I opened the door my olfactory senses were blasted with the funk of old seafood. Now, I love seafood but this was a bad smell. I proceeded to obtain my buffet to-go box and head to the back. I pass the sushi cause I just don't trust it given that smell. I move on to the buffet where you have your choice of this chicken dish or that chicken dish or this other chicken dish. OR this seafood dish. No beef to be seen. I filled my box to the brim with random things and leave. Good part - only 7.50!! The food itself was pallatable, save the cream cheese puffs. They were just weird. Odd flavoring in thecream cheese and the shell was too thick. Just weird. I give it 2 stars cause it was just meh. I'll give it one more try on another day. Perhaps I'll be brave and try the sushi. Ok, so....once I got past the 98 pounds sign (what is up with that name?) and the lackluster strip mall exterior, I was so glad I overcame my initial resistance! Atmosphere: Somewhat better than the typical Asian buffet - clean, smelled good, nothing extraordinary but not bad. Sushi: I'm no sushi expert. I have an aversion to fish roe after having overdosed on it once (don't ask). For a buffet they have GREAT sushi/maki roll selection - not just a ton of Philadelphia rolls either. Spicy tuna rolls were the BOMB. I found the sushi really, truly delicious! I had two plates of rolls with a variety of sauces and enjoyed it so much I never got around to the buffet! Normally I would be weary of a sushi buffet, raw fish sitting out and all but this place is always packed and the sushi gets turned out very quickly so it stays fresh! Aside from the sushi, I come for the Cajun seasoned crawfish and the cab legs. Mmm Mmm good! This place is a bit pricier than the average Asian buffet but with their seafood selection it is definitely warranted. Meh, it is a typical (Americanized) Chinese buffet. Huge pan of red sweet and sour sauce and plenty of fried things to smother with it. Yes, it has sushi, but there are no signs telling you the different types. The mystery sushi consisted of various rolls filled with a mystery filling, some had roe on top, some had drizzles of some kind of sweet sauce. One roll had pieces of salmon on top, and another mystery roll was dipped in tempura batter. Tasty for what it was, or rather what you guess it might be. I did try to ask a server who was standing near the line but she didn't speak English. Back to the "hot" line, as I had mentioned before there are many fried things to smother in sweet/sour sauce, and your other typical stir fried dishes, some baked salmon, mussels, etc... I did try a mussel, it was cold. I tried a bite of a few desserts including a cream stuffed pastry, and some green tea ice cream. I usually love green tea ice cream, but this stuff was soft serve and tasted like some sort of green chemical, not tea. The pastry was just puff pastry filled with imitation whip cream, blah. I read some of the other reviews before dining here and took into consideration that many people said that you MUST go when they open if you want to see any sushi. This is true. I went for lunch on a Thursday at 11:30 and by 12 half of the sushi trays were empty and were not being replenished. I am glad that I went when I did because out of all the food here the most edible stuff was the sushi. They make you pay first, so you may want to take a look to see what the buffet looks like before you pay. Also, they have a sign on the sneeze guard next to the sushi threatening a fine if they see that you are not eating everything you take. :) I spent 11 dollars for lunch, it is expensive for what you get. Kowalski's sushi is better and you know what's in it, a much better deal, unless you eat like a pig. Ooooooo but I do suggest following your meal with some schnaps or a beer or you will be tasting your lunch for the rest of the day. My husband, 9 year old daughter, and myself have been here several times. We LOVE it. My husband is a big Sushi fan - and they were always prepping fresh rolls each time we have been there. We usually go on Saturdays or Sundays and right around the change from lunch into dinner. Sometimes they have trouble keeping up with demand, but the trick is to get there before the crowd does! :) Note: Their Sushi offerings are fresh and DELICIOUS. Once, my husband politely asked if they had Eel roll, and the staff there made him an entire Eel roll FRESH. Of course, we left a nice tip in the jar! Their Buffet is the standard and decent fare that most Asian/American Buffets are with classic standbys- mac 'n cheese, green beans, fresh fruit, jello, etc. However, you may find an unexpectedly fantastic new flavor now and then.... crab ("crabby claws" as my daughter calls them), frog legs, ... you never know. Nasty. I would poke this place with a 10 Foot poll. Sticky tables. Even when you asked them to wipe the tables they wipe them with nasty rag that looks like it's been used for years. The food is not even edible. I found a long hair in my sushi. When I showed it to the waitress she said no that's not from us that's from the people before you. I don't know what's worse? The hair or the excuse? ThThe chicken looks like cat food. My friend, a vegetarian, got one of the rolls that said vegetable rolls on the sign. Yup. That was pork. Confirmed it with the waitress. One of the better buffets if you get there during a busy time. Many options including several sushi rolls to choose from. They always have several fruit options and three steam tables of selections. Dinner is more expensive however the seafood selection is larger on Friday and Saturdays it seems. Great buffet with enough variety to keep me coming back for lunch. There's the usual range of Chinese dishes such as sweet and sour chicken and General Tso. My favorites are the stir fried dishes such as Mongolian beef and Broccoli beef since they seem to be the freshest and are replaced regularly. There's also a wide range of sushi which while they don't use many expensive ingredients is tasty enough and is always superbly presented. Also try the hot and sour soup it's highly addictive. Service has always been excellent, the drinks are quickly refilled though the cynic in me thinks this is done to make you feel full and you don't eat as much. What a hideous lunch. The dining room was quite dark and drab; no natural light. Servers were intrusive. The food was a hit or miss and most was amiss. The sushi was absolutely dreadful, salty and fishy-tasting. The mussels were fishy and frozen, topped with cheese and baked in a pathetic attempt to cover up the evidence. The general tao's chicken was mostly soggy breading. The beef from the beef and broccoli was like baby food. The only reason I award two stars and not one is because there was a nice selection of fresh fruit, albeit not all ripe and most not cut up properly. Most of the veggies tasted crisp and fresh. Also, the sweet biscuits (sugared doughnuts) and the small cheese pies baked with puff pastry were delectable, far better than the tasteless pastries made of dry cake, dye and cool whip. read more

The food is solid here, the sushi is better than most, the food is hot and not overloaded so you have to dig to the bottom to get fresh product. Very surprised by the quality of the food. Did not realize they had a big sushi section, which was a nice surprise. They had kalbi short ribs that were a little tough near the bone but otherwise it was tender and had great flavor. Hot items were pretty decent. The sashimi was slow coming out and when they did put out sashimi it was small amounts at a time. Quality wise, it was pretty decent (more than what I was expecting for a buffet). I'm pretty surprised to see only three stars on this place. I had lunch here a few weeks ago with a co-worker and we both though it was pretty solid, at least for a Chinese buffet. If you ask me, the food at every Americanized Chinese Buffet is pretty much the same and most of the food seems to come from the same supplier. The variable seems to be the size of the buffet and the qualifier is the temperature of the food. With that in mind, I thought this place was pretty good. I didn't have any of the sushi during my visit, but it looked pretty good and above average for a CB to be serving. My father-in-law also claims the sushi is pretty good. Price is typical CB pricing. This is our go-to buffet! The quality of the food is superb - always fresh and hot. The service is wonderful - we've never had a server (for beverages, napkins, etc) who we didn't like. Every time we go they kid around with our now 16 month old. One important thing to know is that the fancy seafood is only on the weekends. That's why the weekend price is higher. My husband will eat 3 plates of only crab, shrimp, oysters, etc, so the higher price is well worth it. Beverages are included in the price. The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's kind of small. You'll leave stuffed, but if you're wanting a buffet a mile long, this isn't it. This is my go-to chinese buffet. For an all you-can-eat deal, the sushi is surprisingly serviceable. You can pretty much skip all the chinese food except the seafood specials (crab legs, lobster or crawfish, depending on the night).
