Very surprised by the quality of the food. Did not realize they had a big sushi section, which was a nice surprise. They had kalbi short ribs that were a little tough near the bone but otherwise it was tender and had great flavor. Hot items were pretty decent. The sashimi was slow coming out and when they did put out sashimi it was small amounts at a time. Quality wise, it was pretty decent (more than what I was expecting for a buffet). This is our go-to buffet! The quality of the food is superb - always fresh and hot. The service is wonderful - we've never had a server (for beverages, napkins, etc) who we didn't like. Every time we go they kid around with our now 16 month old. One important thing to know is that the fancy seafood is only on the weekends. That's why the weekend price is higher. My husband will eat 3 plates of only crab, shrimp, oysters, etc, so the higher price is well worth it. Beverages are included in the price. The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's kind of small. You'll leave stuffed, but if you're wanting a buffet a mile long, this isn't it. I don't understand all these rave reviews about this place. This was absolutely the nastiest Chinese food I've had in my life. There were two small buffet tables and both sushi and dessert counters. The selection was rather puny, the food was cold, and some of the dishes prepared horribly. The squid was rock-hard, the rice was overcooked and mushy, and the chicken seemed undercooked. I didn't have the sushi, so that may very well have been pretty good. Other than that, the restaurant seemed clean and the staff fairly friendly. Not all that great ... for the price, the selections were meek at best. We went around 7PM on a Saturday night. IMO the best thing there were the crab legs, and you had to wait for them, and they didn't fill them all that often, so most the time they were gone :( The noise factor is loud, very hard to carry on conversations when there really is not any privacy between tables. For a $12.00 buffet with unlimited refills, sushi, fruit abd ice cream. I would say its a good place to hit up to get your fix. Obviosly, you hit buffets during peak hours which are 12 to 1 or 5 to 6 or you run the risk of running into some cold or stale dishes. There were all races here. But for me. I had to stick with amercian chinese staples which were good. I had the cream cheese Rangoon, chicken wings, egg rolls, general toso's chicken noodle, fried rice, sushi, and pot stickers, etc. I did try something in a shell but that didn't go well so I went back to the basics. Believe me I eat crab, lobster, and oysters. But I don't know what it was here. The other thing that caught me ofi385f guard is that one of the sushi. I have eaten a lot of sushi but this piece looked like broccoli in it and apon closer observation it might of been some type of fish skin. Because it tasted awful. I try to keep in shape, but I have cheat days on the weekends. I eat plain food and restrict my carbs on a scientific level, so by the time I want to indulge in something tasteful, I hit the "normal" joints. Knowing that Great Moon Buffet is the King of Chinese Cheatery, and going there often, I wanted to try something new. Lo and behold, I was crying inside myself after 98 Pounds. Disgusting...that is, if you have any taste buds or discriminating bones in your body! Do NOT go there expecting anything that resembles either true sushi (even buffet quality) or even mediocre Americanized Chinese food! For reals... My hubby and I made the long trek down to Bloomington to check this place out, but soon regretted even the gas money it took us to get there. The sushi is unidentifiable, as most of the items are odd mixtures of random seafood and sauce (be it Sriracha, mayo, or cream cheese). They will put out an occasional platter of nigiri or sashimi (ours happened to be frozen), but the vultures will quickly grab that low quality stuff right up! The cooked items were disappointing for being food that you would normally feel guilty eating because it is so unhealthy for you, but the caveat is -- it just doesn't taste good, so isn't even worth the calories! If you ever want to know how clean the kitchen is, go and look in the bathroom. If its clean and sparkly, then you can usually rest assured that they are running a tight ship and the kitchen is just as clean, if not cleaner. The bathroom at 98 Pounds Buffet was immaculate. (We had lunch, and this was our first visit, so we don't know what the dinner selection entails - although we were told from a friend that the dinner selection is amazing) The quality of the sushi rolls would be the same as what you would get a Byerlys, and I buy sushi there often. Of the food that I selected, I found each one very good. And there were some items that I had never seen before on a Chinese buffet (sushi, lychee, actual seafood in the seafood delight). My husband and I agreed that this was a place that we could make the drive for at least once a week. Nothing on the buffet line was dry. Everything was very fresh and was being replenished accordingly. Value is Excellent! For two people for lunch, we paid $19.50. I believe that we got a lot more than what we actually paid for. This is an evaluation for lunch and I'm comparing it with the other lunch Chinese Buffets. The place is huge and kept very clean. They have the biggest selection for sushi and the quality was compatible to the sushi you would buy at the grocery store. You can see them making the sushi right behind the counter. Their entrees were just average and they didn't replenish some dishes even during noon hour. So, if you are OK with grocery store quality sushi and want to eat a lot, this is the place to go, but if you are looking for quality Chinese food, this would be a disappointment. The service here is horrible! They are so Rude and barely come by to refill your drinks. We visited one day for a late lunch (around 3:30pm) and they charged us for lunch well at 4:00 they brought out Shrimp and we didn't know that they had started the dinner foods. the waitress came over to our table and tried to pull the plate away from my husband and kept yelling that we couldn't take Shrimp. When we told her that we didn't know and to tell us how much extra we could pay since my husband had the shrimp in front of him they got mad because we asked them to charge us for the difference. The place was over crowded for Sunday night dinner. The buffet was a mess with food everywhere, cross contaminating each other. The sushi was slow in coming out, with people waiting in line for subpar fish. I was the only person in my group to eat the crawfish. And unfortunately got sick as well, was vomiting all night! I've been here numerous times over the years and for a Chinese buffet, we feel it's quite expensive... offsetting the price of Sushi I'm guessing. The quality and taste are good, drinks included... we don't eat a ton of Sushi here as if Sushi is what I'm after there are all you can eat Japanese restaurants that are better for that purpose and for not much more $.... and not too far away. Terrible customer service. We bought a $20 gift card for friends, but when our friends brought their entire family out for a dinner, the balance on the card was $0. They had to make a bunch of phone calls and we even verified the transaction with the credit card company, but the manager refused to accept the $20, saying they wanted to check with their records later on. Wow! I don't understand seeing reviews that say this place is expensive. Really. $15 for dinner, includes all you can eat crab legs, crawfish, mussels, octopus, sushi and much more. If you are a seafood lover (more importantly a shellfish lover), you WILL get your money's worth. Buffet price includes choice of drink, I had the hot tea and it went well with my massive meal. Three of us went there for dinner this evening, against the advice of the negative reviews, and all three of us have been suffering since. The food quality was non existent (the soda was good!). Very greasy, and not many options besides seafood (my favorite was the stir fried whole octopuses...) and chicken dishes either too soggy or too tough to eat. This is a really expensive buffet. I tried it couple times because I came along with bunch of friends. It doesn't seem the foods have any improve or special. The sushi might be worth in the buffet but lately, they in purpose cutting down serving the sushi, so the customers will moved to eat other dishes. The negative side that stopped me returning to this buffet is : price and services. I found there were other cheaper buffet which almost served the same amount of foods. About the services, it is really slow. When I saw them refilling the foods, they were "throwing" the new foods into the old foods and mixed it together, like how you throwing foods to the pigs. For a random weekday lunch the price was a little over $10 a person. I came at a popular time (around 12:30pm) and it seemed like the restaurant had a strategy of not filling the sushi plates in a quick manner to prevent people from eating too much sushi. Considering I had gone for the sushi, this was pretty disappointing. I ended up eating not so appetizing sushi pieces since those were the only ones left and during the hour I was there, they only refilled about 4 plates of sushi. They had a lot of variety had it all been filled, but they literally would stand around and the two guys behind the counter would chat, work slowly, and take about 15 minutes to make one plate of sushi to be refilled. Damn cheap strategy if you ask me. The hot foods on the other hand were constantly being refreshed, which would have made me given bigger marks except that they tout their sushi selection so much. Their variety in the hot foods section wasn't bad, the quality was actually relatively good. They had mostly Asian foods - beef & broccoli, sweet and sour chicken, teriyaki chicken, chow mein, mei fun, fried rice, fried chicken wings/drumsticks, fried fish, baked salmon (very overdone), baked mussels, baked oysters (which does not have oysters in it and tastes very sour), sesame balls (looked very dry), to name most of the Asian variety. They also had hot and sour soup, cream cheese wontons, and a few American type of dishes that I can't remember at the moment (~3-4 varieties). Their desserts looked better in terms of having a large variety of fruit available and a few cake varieties, although I didn't get around to eating those. the husband and i went here for lunch on a Saturday. we were both impressed at how clean and nice the place looked, not at all what we were expecting from the outside ( i had gone here once before, before it changed into the 98lb buffet and was NOT impressed even a little bit). my husband was very happy with the "Chinese" food and i partook in the "sushi", it was nothing like a real sushi place but better than any other buffet sushi I've ever seen. we are both interested in going back again and i was also super impressed and all their steamed buns with fun things inside, i LOVE those little things! all in all, good buffet, better then most and that makes it worth the extra money read more

I don't know if I have ever been to an "amazing" buffet. I lower my expectation for Chinese buffets. I have been to 98 Pounds three times now, the past two times thanks to a Groupon-like deal. It is more expensive than your typical Chinese lunch buffet, but it does hav a nice variety and overall higher quality than I usually find. Each time I visited was for lunch on a weekday, and each time the restaurant has been busy. I was surprised by how busy it was at 1 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon. The food is better than your typical Chinese buffet. There was a variety of sushi, and it was delicious. There's a decent variety of other entrees, and most of it is fresh and tasty. Four stars is as high as I would ever rate a Chinese buffet, and this one comes close to that. I'd rate many Chinese buffets as 2 stars. I won't be going back any time soon, however, as I swore off Chinese buffets, among other things, as part of my 2012 resolution. If I was to choose any Chinese buffet, regardless of price or location, I can't think of one I'm immediately choose over 98 pounds. read more
