This review will only focus on the early morning Chinese breakfast and not the entire supermarket as a whole. Better than some of the dedicated Chinese breakfast restaurants in the area, Ranch 99 supermarket hot deli offers a surprisingly good array of Chinese pastries, hot omelet based foods and soy milk in the mornings. It's a steam table so you basically just point to what you want, maybe ask what it is if the server's English ability is cooperating that day. Availability depends on how early you arrive, but there are dim sum dumplings stand-bys like shu mai and shrimp dumplings, flaky egg tarts, various sweet bean stuffed pastries, fried rice noodles, preserved egg congee and of course hot soy milk, swerved either sweet, salty, or plain. Also available are yu tiao, the long unsweetened Chinese crullers that are a favorite to dip into the soy milk. Shao bing, a flaky laminated pastry tipped with sesame seeds that are sometimes served wrapped around the crullers or a protein are also available. Available during the weekdays, the selection is expanded on weekends. I'm sure the hours are posted somewhere but things start to sell out pretty early. Get there ASAP for best selection. The staff is friendly, gamely handing you what you point at, but it's a bit of a language Russian roulette if you don't speak Chinese. read more

I love 99 Ranch Markets! I have been going to them since I was little. I grew up first going to the ones in Hacienda and Rowland Heights. I've been to the one in San Diego a few times, the one Cerritos too. I think I might just have a soft spot for this Chinese market because I grew up going to them with my parents. You can get a pretty authentic Taiwanese breakfast at the food court inside of the markets too! I brought the bf who's never had a traditional Taiwanese breakfast, and he seemed to enjoy it! We ordered: - salty soy milk - Chinese fried donut - salty rice roll - sweet rice roll - BBQ pork bun - BBQ pork pastries Writing this makes me crave it all still! I love Chinese food and miss it daily living in North County San Diego (not much of an Asian scene here). Our favorites were the salty rice roll and the BBQ pork pastries. I also love grocery shopping here. I think you get the best bang for your buck for produce and sometimes the meat department since they've got a well stocked butcher counter. Whenever I shopped at 99 ranch, I would always pick up some breads for breakfast. My favorites thus far are taro, pineapple (individual or loaf) and coconut (loaf). The taro buns are the best! Not very sweet just perfect. They used to run out at the end of the day but they must have figured those really sell. The last few times I was there, they have surpluses of it. Don't get the green onion buns! They are very oily and salty. The individually wrapped pineapple is good when you are on a go but I personally like the loaf of pineapple bread. Especially when it's lightly toasted with a spread of butter, it's super good. For me, it's the best part of waking up! read more

Very bad and frustrating order pick up experience due to rude and unhelpful store-front staff. I placed an online pick up order on April 26 and was due to pick up on May 2nd. Then shortly I noticed that I forgot an item and was not able to add this item to my order online. On April 29, I spoke to their customer service and was told that I just need to tell my shopper to pick up this item when I am at the store to pick up my order and I could just pay it there at the service desk. Today when I was there to pick up my order, I mentioned about this but I was told by the front desk that they won't be able to help and if i need this item, i would need to go outside and lineup to get into the store to buy this on my own like all the others. I was just fine to leave without this item as I still have some left at home and I would not want to wait to get in. Then, my shopper came with bags of my groceries and told me that a few items were missing from my order. For one of the missing item, my shopper told me that they have other brands of the same thing but she would not go in and grab it for me. If I need it I should line up outside to get in the store and buy it myself. It's quite frustrating as this is a key spice/ingredient and I would not be able to make the dishes without it. Also, my online order criteria for this item is "okay to substitute with different brand"!! This was eventually resolved with the interference of a supervisor (I assumed) with much efforts from me. Don't bother with online pick up. Waste of your time. They are idiots and like all stores dealing with C-19, they want you to line up outside in order to trick you into buying more things. Stores love C-19, that's because you no longer have to be competitive with pricing or offer any good service. I placed an online order Friday, 5/1. I figured paying the pick up fee was worth it not having to go into a cramp store. My appointment to pick up would be Sunday @ 1-2 pm. Got email on Saturday, 5/2 that my order was being picked up by the shopper. I figured that must be a good system, they pick the order in advance and store it away for you. 1 hour before my appointment, I get an email that my entire order has been cancelled. I called customer service and the only reason I got was the order is cancelled. I asked them if they had the items in stock and they thought it was a trick question and refused to answer it. I asked if my credit card would be refunded the $5 hold and they hung up on me. Since I was already out, I decided to come here at 1pm on Sunday, 5/3. When I got here, there was a long a$$ line waiting to get into the store. I decided not to go to customer service and wait my turn in line. While in the slow moving line, I called some friends and asked them what they wanted from this place. If I was going to put myself at risk in a dark cramp store, I might as well benefit some friends and save them the aggravation and risk of coming here. Just as I suspected, ALL the items I wanted online was right here on the shelf. Beware of the person wiping down the carts. It's noble of them to spray and wipe the carts but using the same rag over and over again defeats the purpose. This place doesn't allow you to use a reusable shopping bag. I have been frequenting this location since 2014. There are a lot of fresh produce and meats to choose from to make your favorite Asian dishes. The grocery selection (rice, noodles, spices, sauces, drinks, snacks, etc.) is also quite good. The produce is probably the most bang for your buck, as other item prices in the store are reasonable, but not the greatest deal. Employees are multi-lingual, to cater to the language needs of customers. I cannot really recommend the restaurants and bakery in this area. There are just too many restaurants and bakeries in the area that blow this place out of the water. For your casual Asian groceries shopping, it does the job though. read more

I went to pick up groceries for CNY and they had New year's music playing which was cool. Parking is going to be interesting. I'd park a little farther away to avoid a bunch of foot traffic but otherwise good. The reason why I am writing this review is because THEY HAVE ANDROID (Soon to be Google) PAY!! My mind, not going to lie, was blown. I never expected them to have it but they do which is super convenient. They also have a membership program which is nice too. It's sticky rice with crispy chinese donut, pickle veggie and crispy shredded meat inside. Good flavor, decent portion and great price. The crispiness of the chinese donut is the perfect combination with the soft chewiness of the sticky rice. Yummy! I enjoy this much more than the other local breakfast place (four sea). I also enjoy the vegetarian style rice noodles very much too. Light, good flavor, not mushy. I like their produce and occasionally their sushi but most recently when I purchased crab meat even though the date on it said it was fresh for five more days it was terribly spoiled. It smelled up my whole office. I took it back the same day for a very easy return but there was no concern or apology. And my friend took a bite of it before we realized that it was rotten. Luckily nothing happened she didn't get sick but now I just feel weird about buying anything from them that isn't packaged or produce. I'm not a big fan of this 99 ranch. The one off Jeffrey and walnut is a lot better in terms of quality. This one carries more items but lacks in freshness. Before thanksgiving I came here to buy a bunch of stuff to cook. Enoki mushroom was on sale... but when I opened the package merely two days later, it already had mold and gross liquidy stuff on it. I also got Chinese pears. They lacked the pear crunch.. the outside was still hard. No dents or bruises. But when I bit into it, my teeth immediately sank in and it was soft and had a really off taste. Gross. Some of the shelves and areas are also dirty or dusty or disorganized. read more

I just love the choices and selection here. One of the favorites in my family are many of the canned tropical fruits they sell here. Many of those fruits are hard to come by and hard to find in other grocery stores. I've been to numerous 99 Ranch Markets from San Diego to San Francisco. I like the Irvine 98 Ranch better than this one on Culver. This place is very small and cramped, you can't even get one shopping cart through the produce aisle; they are going through a remodel but this market is so cramped and has much less produce selection than the one on Jefferey. Seafood and meat selection is less here as well, and the bakery selection has less selection as well. The deli is lacking or maybe I'm used to the Mira Mesa 99 Ranch where the deli selection is huge and diverse. And DONT get me started on their parking situation, on the weekend, don't even try, you have to park at the bank or on the other side of the plaza to even find parking, oh well walking and exercise is fine, but not with 4 bags of groceries! read more

Not enough aisle labeling. It was difficult to find. Don't expect to find someone walking around the market to offer some help... They are very encouraging at the cashier to sign up for rewards but they were not clear what that reward will give you. Decline. I want less email and calls anyways. There is a restaurant in there. It's high peak lunch time. Not much people eating. The hanging ducks look like their drying out. There is also a bread place... and again it's high peak lunch time... no one was in line or eating... So I have had an old Asian man who comes on my patio and steals fruit from my trees for years. I really liked this place! Not only did I find all of the snacks he has left me, but a million different kinds of ramen, good produce, loads of Asian condiments, quail eggs (I have been looking for those everywhere!), Thai Tea ice cream, the mango aloe drinks I like...etc...All of the prices were good, we left with four bags of groceries for a little less than $40. The Chino location is actually a tad bit closer to me, but the 91 was a nightmare last night, so we decided to just get on the toll road and go down to Irvine. I will definitely visit 99 Ranch again, if not this location, then the Chino store. I would also like to come earlier in the day and see what the bakery has to offer, as it was pretty much empty last night around 7:30. read more

The 99 Ranch Market off of Culver in Irvine is one of those places I will only go to if I'm in the area and in need of specific Asian condiments or ingredients. For the most part, I won't go out of my way to shop here. I do like that it's convenient to get to and that parking is ok to find. The food selection varies in quality. For the most part, you can get thinly sliced ribeye hear, egg roll wrappers, a million different soy sauces and sakes, and lychee here. If you're making a recipe for tamarind, you may find it here too. It's a decent market that stocks a lot of Asian groceries. It might not have the freshest of groceries all the time. The Irvine 99 Ranch Market is the largest in that area. The one off Jeffrey and Walnut can't compare in parking, although, let's be honest, parking in any 99 Ranch lot is at your own risk. I like their variety of fruits and veggies, they have a good variety of seafood and meat, and you can always go graze the samples they have on the weekends. They have a bakery off to one corner and a Panda-Express like fast food area, which does not look appealing. And why would you buy BBQ pork or duck there, when you can walk about 50 feet to Sam Woo BBQ and get the real deal? The bakery carries a few interesting items, but JJ Bakery is about 100 feet away and you know it's fresher there. Overall, a good 99 Ranch is one that doesn't stink like fish and this one passed. A couple of things that I didn't like was that someone stole my red bean rice cake right out of my cart and they don't seem to carry weichuan brand products because I searched high and low for my favorite dumpling sauce and they didn't have it there. We shop here often and usually find what we need. But today, for the second time in a week, they are out of my favorite Ajisen Ramen packaged noodles. These noodles are really good as they are freshly made and tastes just like those in the restaurant. The vegetables are usually fresh and well stocked, but they are not as fresh and good quality as those from other stores, such as Rowland Heights or Azusa. Like today, we came here for watercress and found them yellow and dry. This particular store has been here a long time, which also means that it's time for a renovation. If you've been to some of the renovated stores, like Rowland Heights, you know the newer stores are a lot nicer. Nevertheless, an enjoyable shopping experience here, and one can usually find the Chinese goodies one's looking for here. read more
