I've lived in Irvine for over 20 years and have been to most of the Korean markets throughout Orange County, and I honestly think this is the most affordable H Mart location I've been to. Did you know that prices can vary quite a bit between H Mart locations, even within Irvine? The prices here are so affordable that it almost feels like they're still using prices from 10 years ago. I'm honestly amazed every time I come here. Even snacks are often only around $2 a bag, and so many of the food items are priced so low that you find yourself thinking, "Wait... is this really the price?" And if you come around dinner time and some of the prepared foods get those discount stickers put on them?? You can buy enough food to last several days for what you might spend on just ONE meal at a restaurant. Of course, the freshness may not be exactly the same as eating at a restaurant, but honestly, if you heat everything up nicely at home, I might actually be happier eating it at home! I'm not going to specifically comment on the friendliness of the staff because there are a lot of employees and everyone's experience can be different. I've never personally had a bad experience, but I also wouldn't say I've had an experience where I thought, "Wow, everyone here is SUPER friendly!" I mean... it's a grocery store, right? They offer a nice selection of assorted and packaged rice cakes that are made daily and perfect for a light snack. They also offer custom ordered rice cakes for special occasions and celebrations. I ordered a custom rice cake for my baby's 100th day celebration and they did a great job for us. The sweet little lady hand wrote my order in her notebook, which must have been 20 years old, with a little note that said "paid". I thought it was really cute. A few days later, it was ready for me on the counter, as fresh as can be. It was a simple, plain white rice cake but it tasted great when eaten right away. It also saved me the inconvenience of having to drive a long distance to a large Korean bakery. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love supporting small businesses. Especially ones that serve a need for their community. This little Korean lady is providing this service for the growing Korean community in North Irvine, who regularly orders and enjoys these traditional treats. They are located inside Zion Market near the entrance. It's a small counter but they have a variety of rice cakes. They also offer rice-cake cakes that are great for baby birthdays and milestones. They also have rice cake gift sets which are perfect for the holidays or for parents. (Impress your Korean girlfriend's parents with a box of these! They'll love it!!) My favorites here are the rainbow rice cake (basically my childhood) and the injeolmi rice cakes. They are so fresh and soft because they make it daily! They also make really delicious song-pyun which is a traditional treat that Koreans usually eat during the holidays. It tastes like and has the texture of mochi but they're filled with red beans, sweet syrup, or bean powder. (My favorite is the sweet syrup) I recommend you eat these rice cakes the day you purchase them and if you have leftovers, make sure you put the rice cakes in the freezer to maintain the soft texture and flavor. The prices are a bit higher than other rice cake shops (around $6 per pack) but that's because they use all natural ingredients and it's basically a brand name rice cake shop that's all over LA as well. Gift boxes go upwards from $30. You can compare the quality for yourself but I guarantee you'll love the rice cakes from this shop more than the others!
