The dried ecklonia sheets - so good~ with hot rice!
    Sunny T.

So glad they opened up the Irvine location. I used to go to La Habra/Buena Park location to get the goods and now, I don't have to drive so far. This location is very clean and well organized. All the items are displayed neatly so that you can easily see and pick out the items. This is a Korean specialty grocery shop. They provide higher premium quality (which means higher price) products from Korea. I picked up the bag of dried baby octopus, dried ecklonia cava sheet (sorta like the dried seaweed), & some traditional Korean snacks called Jeonbyong. Yes, you can go to a Korean market for similar stuff and pay less. But once you taste the difference in quality, you will be willing to spend a little more. ***once you enter the entrance is inside the far right corner next to the animal hospital

Poor customer service. If you aren't aware of the sale, they'll charge regular price. I wouldn't recommend shopping here.

This is where I'm going to definitely tell you to never listen to anybody else's opinion and you should always try things for yourself. Because when I came here, it was beautiful. The hot foods bar may not be as big as the costa mesa location, but there's plentiful teriyaki chicken, salmon, soups, etc. And all of it is really good in my opinion. There's an infinite variety of Japanese snacks and the cashiers were so nice and kind. Even the security guard was helpful. I also just wanted to mention that the beef prices here were some of the best I had ever seen! Steaks for 7 to 8 bucks??? This place makes it possible to eat well even on a budget, and I am extremely grateful for that. I know for I fact I don't need to drive all the way to Costa Mesa anymore because this Tokyo Central is really, really great in my strong opinion. 10/10.

They have a nice selection of seasonal produce to go along with the staples. Their prices are higher, but the quality is there. Fish selection and quality is great. Prices are reasonable for the quality of seafood. I buy snapper here for ceviche, but get your jalepenos at a Mexican market for freshness and price. The prepared foods - sushi, poke, onigiri, musubi, hot dishes - are all tasty. They can add up fast though. The snacks and drinks are awesome if you like the Japanese snacks and drinks. Liquor selection is small but good quality. Whenever I go in, I spend way too much, but I am always happy with my purchases. Oh, parking is a challenge. Busy with small spaces.

The food court was so crowded and difficult to order as there were long waits for food. I was just so happy that there was a food court. After the excitement passed I noticed it was a bit small then I went to pick up some groceries and seen how small the grocery side was that I couldn't believe it. There are barely any aisles for any sort of groceries and the prices are high. Even the sale items I feel are higher than I can get at other Japanese markets. This should have been at least double the size or they should have just made it all a food court or simple grocery store. I will still try to support it but it's tough to get groceries as their prices are much higher. As the newness has worn down, it's much easier to get in and out to pick up some things. Unfortunately for the business that there's a lot less foot traffic.

Service was great as I walked in I was given a salutation, and asked if I needed assistance as I browsed. They had meat pies from England. The only thing I'd like to mention is the fact that a few of the items that I would get here that I'm familiar with I can purchase a few dollars cheaper elsewhere. However, if I want to buy it all in one location, and save gas money and try something new then this is the place to be so therefore it gets five stars. Instead of going to my usual Korean market, I wanted to try something homemade and I'm so glad I did. All of their kimchi is made fresh just days prior, and they offer a great variety with different vegetables and sizes to choose from. It's a small market, but they also carry other Korean goodies, which is a nice bonus. The kimchi I got was really good! super fresh with a nice tangy flavor, well balanced seasoning, and a satisfying crunch. It wasn't very spicy, but still really flavorful and easy to enjoy. So happy to have found this place. I'll definitely be back!

After trying their kimchi, I don't think I can go back to store bought kimchi anymore. I was a little worried about the language barrier since I don't speak Korean, but luckily their son works there full time and helped explain the different kimchi and their fermentation process. He was very knowledgeable and patient. It was really nice supporting a family business, and you can tell there is a lot of care and tradition behind their kimchi. We picked up two jars. The red kimchi is $15 and tastes just like the kimchi you get at a good Korean BBQ restaurant. It is very flavorful and pairs perfectly with grilled meat. Add some KBBQ, a fried egg, and rice and you have a great meal. The white kimchi is $19 and is lighter and refreshing. I enjoy pairing it with pork belly wraps because it balances the richness of the meat really well. It almost feels like a palate cleanser between bites. Both were absolutely delicious. Once I finish these jars, I will definitely be making the drive back again.

The workers were Japanese and everyone I interacted with was super friendly and welcoming. Their sushi, sashimi, and hot foods section were to die for!! They had all kinds of hot meals, skewers, and snacks that you could box up yourself and pay for by the pound. They also had separate sections for onigiri, sashimi, and sushi. I got there a little too early, so I missed out on the onigiri, but the sashimi was incredibly fresh and just melted in my mouth. I also picked up some mochi, and it was sooooo good. It was soft and pillowy instead of being super chewy, and I really wish I had bought more. I can't wait to go back to California just so I can visit Tokyo Central again.

I didn't like the layout quite as much as the newer Torrance location, but I was still able to find most of the things I was looking for and enjoyed shopping here. The prices are also cheaper than another Japanese grocery store in the area. Of the three Asian grocery stores I've visited in this area over the past two days, this one is the best overall in terms of ambiance, selection, and prices, so I would definitely come back. Unfortunately, I had another problem with their prepared foods. This time I bought the pork katsu, and the meat tasted off, like it wasn't fresh. I had to spit it out and regretted buying it. I'm probably going to stop buying prepared foods from Tokyo Central because I've also had problems with the prepared foods at the Torrance location during my last two visits. That makes issues with prepared meats on my last three visits to Tokyo Central. That said, I'm still a fan of their fresh sliced meats. I picked up packages of thinly sliced pork and beef to use this week, and I can always find some of my favorite Japanese cookies here. Overall, I like the store and will return, but I'll be sticking to the fresh groceries rather than the prepared foods.
