I love this Ranch 99! - Great selection! - Very clean - Spacious - Deli with delicious hot foods; if you spend $30 or more on groceries, you get $1 for every $15 you spent towards the deli. Another Asian supermarket in Milpitas... but in their defense they've been here for awhile. I love being able to go here after work and having them fry me a fish for dinner (w00t w00t, I don't have to cook!) They also have a huge bakery and deli section so you can grab ready made food for lunch or dinner. Their meat and seafood sections are organized and CLEAN. LOVE LOVE LOVE that. They have a great selection of fish and they always (look) fresh. They have a ton of my Asian candies and cookies and the prices tend to be a bit cheaper than at the other Asian grocery stores. Cheap fruit and veg. This is definitely the place to come for all ingredients of the Asian persuasion. Their fruit and veg is the cheapest of all the supermarkets with no exception, and you can also pick up cheap cuts of chicken, pork and beef as well as very competitively priced choices of fish. It's definitely not the place to come for your run of the mill grocery shop. They have a handful of 'American' products, and they are - as you would expect - more expensive than regular supermarkets. This is certainly my shop of choice for meat, fruit and veg as well as things like soy sauce, hoi sin, dried noodles, ramen, seaweed etc They also have a cooked food area where you can fill (and when I say fill I mean the overflowing kind of fill) a takeaway pot with all kinds of deliciousness. I'm definitely a fan of Ranch 99. They have such a wide variety of produce and food items. The best part about it is that it's cheap. Recall my Berkeley Bowl find of Durian for $5.99 a pound? Well, they have it here for $1.99 a pound. Albeit it didn't look quite as fresh and mouth-watering, but you still get the point. When I walked in here the other day, I was astounded at the amount of mooncake they had for Zhong Qiu Jie (mid-autumn festival). They even had Durian mooncakes!!! They do have a small bakery, buffet, and cafe of sorts if you're hungry for some fresh food. The store here is massive, so expect to spend a fair amount of time perusing if you have not been here before. Seriously, nearly half an aisle dedicated to noodles! your mind will gush with enthusiasm in comparison to your standard 6-pack ramen selections at Safeway. It's a college-kid's dream come true! The liquor selection is pretty decent. As is the cookware. I bought a 4-cup rice cooker for $18. Sweet! I would definitely come here if you haven't been here. It's worth a 15 minute drive as well. If you want, you can even explore the square plaza in which it's situated for some authentic Asian cuisine if you don't feel like cooking your own. read more

This is my go-to store for cheap produce, spices, rice, and some asian snacks. I've steered clear of the meat department ever since seeing a couple packages of rotting green pork slices. We used to buy the roast ducks. However, the area where they cut up and prep your chosen duck is shielded from view with paper and cardboard. No parking, stacks and stacks of items in the aisle way making it very hard to push your shopping cart around. So I went to 99 Ranch to do my usual grocery shopping. Everything was fine until I got to the cashier counter. The cashier made a mistake with the payment method so she has to ask the manager to come over to cancel and redo. The young chubby manager came over and yelled at the cashier then yelled at me, blamed me for something the cashier did. In all my shopping experiences, I have never encountered such a vile person. The owner needs to do better job at picking out the manager of the store. You can't have someone like her yelling at customers and your own employees. That is not how business should be done. I used to like this supermarket because it was next to some okay restaurants and Sheng Kee Bakery so popping by was convenient. Now, courtesy of one of their store employees who seems to think she is a manager (but I was told she is not a top level manager), I am boycotting this location. Miss Not-Really-the-Top-Manager's name badge said something like "Xiao Qian". All right, Xiao Qian. My boyfriend just asked one of the cashiers why he did not get a deli coupon and she must have been having a really PMS filled day, because she SNAPPED, "Only over $30!" When I asked why we had to buy a minimum of $30 if we get a coupon for every $15 (hey, how was I to know every store was different?), she threw a box of cookies we had bought onto the conveyor belt and snarled, "I said ALREADY to HIM that it is over $30! Did you not hear?!" in Mandarin. First off, we are in the U.S. How about you not assume we all speak Mandarin? Second off, you are a cashier and you have to face people all day long. If you are having a bad day, try not to ruin the days of every single person who passes through your line. Third off, do not call over Xiao Qian and then proceed to giggle when, after repeating your snarled comments with little info added, she whispers to you to ignore your customers. And, Xiao Qian, at the end of the day, you still work at 99 Ranch just like the rest of us work for a living so get with the program and stop lording over your shopping cart kingdom. For cheap but decent chinese take-out food, I suggest hot-bar items at 99 Ranch market. Noodles (chow men) in medium size container (most regular to-go chinese noodle box) is only $2.79. A bakery inside has very reasonably priced soft-bread, if you like soft bread. read more

I'm here for...Grocery Bags!! Yay for City of Milpitas! As the anchor store of Milpitas Square, 99 Ranch Market is the go-to place for Asian groceries. It's got a food court and a bakery inside as well. Prices are also very competitive. I prefer 99 Ranch over Marina any day. The meat and veggie here are usually more fresh. I think they still do the free frying if you buy their fish. So if you want to fry your fish, get it here. They also stop carrying news papers a while back. No big deal for me, but I know I lot of Asian families gets their news paper here. Parking could be challenging on the weekends and weekdays during lunch time, even though they have a big parking lot. Did I mention they have GROCERY BAGS?!?! read more

Ranch 99 and I go way, way back. It was one of my go-to markets for all my Asian ingredients and snacks. I even get the 10% off birthday discount every year (as a cardmember). I came in here after eating because I wanted to pick up some things that I knew I couldn't get once I was back in Santa Cruz. I got some fresh lychees (the ones at Trader Joes are shit...they're too tiny), some dried plums and my favorite Vita juiceboxes. I was really surprised that they had NO MANGO flavor in stock! I wanted to get more but I was feeling the food coma kick in since I had previously just had dim sum. I really wanted some coconut jelly cubes and I stared at the jar in my hand for about a minute and then I put it back for 2 reasons: 1. I don't have a big enough freezer to make ice so I can't have any halo-halo 2. Had to pick up my boyfriend on my way home from work yesterday but had 1 hour to kill so decided to check out this place since it was near his workplace. WOW! How come I've never shopped here before??!! They have a bakery and a hot deli section, awesome! 3 dimsum items for $2.20, you can mix and match. I tried the 2 different types of sticky rice, it was delicious! Forget ABC Restaurant, I'm coming here for dimsum from now on lol. They also have $6.99 deal: stuff as much food as you can in the box! Looked like people were all over that line, asians know a deal when they see one! I roamed all the isles and was impressed with the selection. A lot of asian dessert/candies/treats, I'm a sucker for those! I grabbed some fish, tofu, and vegetables so I can have hotpot dinner tonight, everything was fresh. My 1 hour went by quickly and I was happy with my little discovery, I'll definitely be back for more grocery shopping. -1 star because I noticed the prices were higher than other asian markets I've been to. read more

this 99 is huge compared with the others in fremont, newark. it's clean and has a deli section that offers ready to eat and ready to cook food. the lines aren't that long either. not with 10 lanes open. maybe because it was sunday at 6ish. parking was also available which is an strange occurence at this location. sogo has baked goods cheaper than sheng kee if you like their products. there''s often many free samples of food available. read more

This is like the asian costco. Walk around and they will have samples for you. Otherwise, pretty much your typical 99 ranch.

The dimsum is not great, but it'll satisfy your craving. 3 pieces for $2.20 and you can mix and match so if there are only two of you, you don't have to try to stuff three of each kind of dim sum as you normally would in a restaurant. The taro cake, shrimp ball, wonton, shumai and pork bun are pretty good. This location is clean and doesn't smell like a sewer. The service is pretty quick too! read more

This place is like any other 99 Ranch but there's one distinction: This is the only 99 Ranch in the bay area that still gives out free plastic bags! The employees here are really nice. This is the most expensive Ranch 99 I have ever been to. Maybe because I am still in San Diego pricing mode, but you would expect cheaper prices in an affordable market (isn't this one supposed to be?). I think price wise is getting closer to Whole Foods yet the quality does not seem to be similar. At least here you can get much variety of Asian veggies than you don't get easily at your usual market. Also I like to get octopus in different formats and also bacalao (salty cod) and Ranch 99 is one of the few places were you can get those. Besides, the amount of fun looking drinks is amazing. SOLELY commenting on the food court: It's got one of the biggest food courts of any 99 Ranch I've seen, and I've been to a lot. Most do the hot food, but not all do dim sum or noodle soup. Don't order the dim sum here. At $2.20 an order it's not a very good value for what is essentially cheap dim sum. If you want cheap dim sum, go somewhere else. But if you want won ton mein... come here. Real shrimp in your won tons, the won tons are real sized ones and not tiny little things, two right-sized chunks of bok choy, and while the broth is a little too light, heck the rest is about right. I've spent enough hours and hundreds of miles looking for good quality won ton yee mein that's anywhere close to what I eat in Hong Kong, and this is one of the closest ones I've found in the USA. This isn't a knock to many of the otherwise very good places I've hit in San Gabriel, Monterey Park, Rowland Heights, San Francisco, etc.-- but most simply aren't close enough. This is closer than most of them get. And that's damned tasty! read more

I've only been here on weekends, and the parking lot at this plaza is filled. It can take awhile sometimes to find a spot to park. I came back after being away for 4+ months, I am so happy that there are plenty of fresh and reasonably priced fruits, veggies, and seafood here... Lots of Asian food choices, makes my tummy sing songs! =-) Oh, and I also got a serving of their 3 pieces of dimsum combo for $2.40 ($2.20 +tax), and though I didn't get it, the fairly reasonably priced "all you can fit" bento for $6.99!!! This Ranch 99 is like any other branch I been to except for the layout, their hot deli options and prices. This location seemed cleaner than the one in Fremont or Newark. They have a larger dining area and it's in a great location where it's surrounded by all sorts of asian restaurants. The only downside of their hot deli is that they don't offer as much choices and the ones that I like at the newark location. In conclusion not all Ranch 99s are the same. The prices at this location is slightly higher, but nevertheless $7.50+ tax for a box of food is still not bad at all. Unlike Panda Express where your limited to 1 side + 2 entree kinda deals, here you can choose whatever you want and as much as you want just as long as the lid can close somewhat haha.. The difference between the food at Ranch 99 and Panda Express is like mandarins and oranges, they're similar but not the same. You won't see honey walnut shrimp or beijing beef (my favorites) here at Ranch99, but the food is decent. All n all chinese food is greasy no matter what because most of it's deep fried or sauteed in lots of oil. What I enjoyed the most here was their eggplant and dimsum. read more

I don't know why but this place is always OVERLY expensive so knowing that we really only come in to browse and see what's different from our nice, cheap supermarkets near home. Today, mom needed to buy some noodles for dinner tomorrow. I'm like, okay, sure. We search for about 15min, the noodle variety game is STRONG. We finally find it and she goes off to browse some more and I'm like aite cool. I get a bag of kimchi ramen which seems kinda cheap but the ramen I really wanted are like $5 extra from the store I usually go to so I'm sad but whateva I'll get it later. We go to check out, there's three cashiers and on the other side there's another three cashiers. Naturally we pick the line with less people and less items right? These people literally had 3 items each. The kid behind the guy who bought 3 drinks just straight up left to the third cashier, at this point we're kinda like oh maybe we should leave too, cuz the lady in front of us was talking in some angry Chinese at the cashier and they're going back and forth, and it ends up with her redoing the entire transaction.. twice. At this point my mom, kind of an aggressive person, she's like "are you done??" and the cashier puts up a hand like "stop" and then kind of waved us away. The kid, done like 5min ago. The guy with the drinks, like 3min ago. We still here at this cashier and at this point we're kinda like should we just leave these items here cuz gahdDAMN that's flippin disrespectful. We're obviously annoyed and you aren't HELPING. We grab our two(!!!) items. So we finally go over to the other side. The group in front of us are just loitering after finishing their transaction but the cashiers there are younger people who clearly know how to ring you up and get you going FAST. So he started ringing us up and the group gets the heck outta my way cuz my face looks PISSED and I'm def not sayin nice things at this point. Anyway bless that cashier +1 for u dude. The deli here is probably the best one of the locations in the area. It's all you can fit in your to-go container, self serve for $6.99: veggies, stir fries w/ sauce, calamari, wings, noodles, rice. There's a Dim sum self serve side of the deli has a good variety for 3 orders(2-3 pieces) for $6 (I think). Some of the items include shark fin, shrimp, siu mai, pork buns, sponge cake and sesame balls. Great for lunch! There's tables and a counter along the window to consume your meal. As for the grocery itself, it's crowded (in terms of parking, aisle space, and people) and a bit stinky but well stocked. Great price for fresh fish (they scale and clean, even fry) and mint, lime, basil, chilies (labeled and packaged and much cheaper than Safeway) and of course, Asian veggies and snacks are abundant here. read more

Amazing Asian supermarket. There was no fish/seafood smell the last time I was there, the floors are pretty and new. The market is so clean and organized. The variety of different fruit and produce in the fresh produce section is impressive and yes, fresh. The meat and seafood sections were also very organized (a feat in most Asian supermarkets), and there was a wide selection of everything they had in the store. Service was also very nice. The carts are still in good condition; I love coming to this market. That being said, the prices here are a lot more expensive than other Asian markets. Also, many American items that many Asian people don't eat as often are more expensive than they would be in a non-Asian market. So, longer story short: Great service, good products, wide variety/selection, good service, and not-as-desirable prices. We'll be back... when our wallet's fuller. read more

Since taking cooking more seriously, I started looking for good ingredients in terms of value and quality. Ranch 99 was a surprising candidate for finding some good meats/fish/poultry. I've passed their 'bbq' and prepared dishes section (sort of like their internal restaurant), and I must say, that roast duck looks quite dusty. Never tried it, and probably never will, but 4 stars because I found some whole duck as a replacement; fresh, clean, and 5.99 a lb versus. 12.99 a lb. frozen at some posh poultry shop. Time to get my butcher on! On top of that, PSMO beef filet at 3.99(?) a lb or so. Quality might not be up there, but the value aspect raises the ante on that buy. Their deli service is bomb. You can pack everything you can fit in that box, and have enough for a meal and then some. I like their sweet and sour chicken, but I really like that dish in general, so don't look at me. I really like their tofu skin too and I don't even like tofu. The food is a bit on the greasy side though. Lion Market in Fremont is cheaper for everything else though, I believe. But Lion is smaller, and may not carry everything they have here... nor can the Marina Foods near that Lion Market compare. read more

My review is based solely on the cafe/deli as I came here for breakfast the other day. Their breakfast ranges from various dim sum foods (char siu bao, ha gao, su mai etc) and congee. The quality of the food wasn't great but fairly cheap and filling. The theme of their breakfast items seems to sacrifice quality for size. Everything seemed quite large compared to the dim sum you would get at a traditional restaurant. Not that this is a bad thing, I'm all for getting the most for my money. read more

Cooked food, take-out station: --Disappointed with the won-ton noodle soup. Won-ton & noodle were ok, not great. They served it with broccoli today and by the time I got home, the broccoli was mushy... I told the man I wanted it to go, a decent place would have packed the soup SEPARATELY from the noodle and wonton & vege to keep things from getting soggy. So I was unimpressed by the lack of thought. --Roast duck is really good. I've had it here several times and the ducks are not too fat, but have lots of flavor. Rest of the store: love it. Until 99 Ranch came along, I had to rely on the smaller stores (with smaller selection) or going to SF. This is my favorite 99 Ranch and also favorite Chinese supermarket - not only because it is close by, but mostly because it is always clean and it is one of the biggest chinese supermarket in the South Bay I believe. A lot of food choices. Every Sunday I go there for groceries shopping, they always have a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits. But sometimes their meat is a bit expensive. There are a lot of cashiers and even though on a crowded day, paying process is pretty fast. I think even if I have to move farther away I will still come back to this supermarket for groceries shopping! I used to like their Deli food a lot, but soon I found out their food is always soooo oily which makes my stomach sick sometimes. Probably it's just me though. Oh and they give out coupons when you buy groceries. You get $1 coupon for every $15 you spend; but you have to buy a minimum of $30. So on a Sunday afternoon I will buy a lot of groceries, then I can go to the Deli department with coupons and get those roasted duck or BBQ pork really cheap =] Its not as good as the other restaurants which specializes making BBQ or roasted things but I mean, it is so cheap that I can enjoy a lot! read more

I love 99 Ranch! The produce is pretty fresh here, they are open pretty late, and the prices are reasonable. Of course, I'd bet there is a ton of pesticides on veggies and fruit from an Asian market. I do like them very much also because you can find a lot of great snacks and ramen here. But that is not for everyone. I come here for some things, then Safeway for others. But definitely keep this place on your radar. read more

The prices are typical 99 Ranch, which means they're lower than American soopers, but sometimes you've got to pay attention to how long the produce/fish has been sitting there. Not a big deal considering how much more variety there is than at regular markets though. 99 Ranch Markets are doubly good for the other Asian stores that sprout up around them - this one is located in a shop complex that has some decent Asian restaurants, a Korean barbeque, boba/baked goods shops, a DVD/CD shop, and a barbershop.
