This review is for their coffee, as I have not tried any of their food offerings. I really wanted to like this place. It's a nice little place. They offer different blends and can be prepared in different ways. But, my coffee was always sour to some degree, no matter which blend or how it was prepared. Temperature varied at times, even for the same blend. Perhaps it's under brewed. At $5 a cup, it's just too expensive for risking inconsistency. Maybe their food is good. read more

Awesome breakfast or brunch joint in Salt at Kaka'ako. Unique dishes such as the amazing fork-and-knife scone sandwich I had. I was super excited to try the everything bagel inspired scone but when they told me they were out, I went with the cheddar scone and a side of lactaid, which was well worth the stomach ache. The sausage is homemade. The guacamole is as good as guacamole gets. The meals are filling and fresh with beautifully poached eggs! Cynthia hand ground my cinnamon and Cayden was super personable and friendly. Both made the environment loving to be in for anyone walking through the door. Far superior espresso to any of their neighbors. I really appreciate that they properly measure; for example, a Cortado has equal parts of warm milk to espresso. 9Bar is the only place that cares enough about the exact proportions to use oxo measurers; whereas practically every other shop free-pours/eyeballs. read more

Set in Kakaako, this cute and cozy brunch place is nothing short of awesome. It's visually pleasing inside with minimal wall decor and pastries displayed. The menu is simple and very yummy! It's a "find your own seat" kind of place, which could be tricky when it's busy. Luckily, went there on a Thursday at 10ish. Not too busy. We were able to get a table and ordered right away. You have to go to the register to order and the cashier we had was very friendly! Kudos Kaeden. I had the aloha bowl: they're own meat sausage, kimchi, rice... it was very good! I ate the whole thing and wanted more. My friend had a California bowl... she said it was just "ok." She ordered a hot americano, but was given Iced americano, and accidentally grabbed someone's coffee. They let her keep the hot coffee but did not acknowledge the fact that she wanted hot americano even though she told them. She's not one to complain so she just kept both. Really great cappuccino. They're often busy but they're very efficient, like any good coffee shop. I also tried their scuffins (I've tried too many of their scuffins tbh) and they're really good! It takes a certain place to get me to order anything than my usual oat milk cappuccino, but since the quality and taste was so on point, I tried quite a few other drinks and they're all really great. So far this is my favorite place for coffee in Honolulu. Compared to my favorite cappuccinos I've ever had I think this is close to one of the best. The past few weekends I've come here to eat breakfast and after eating all of their selections, I can say I'll be coming here whoever I feel like a breakfast burrito to start out the day - the best I've ever had! Located in the up-and-running SALT complex, 9Bar is a small breakfast and brunch cafe with an eye for art and taste in the new Kaka'ako Community. A nice addition to the myriad of eateries for your attention. The breakfast rice bowls carry a bit of a nostalgia for me. I used to eat these all the time as a child - though not with as much variety as what 9Bar gives up. The Aloha Bowl is a serving of poach egg with picked vegetables, Kim Chee, a savory sausage patty, with furikake over rice. Cut your pieces around the bowl, or mix it up and be surprised with the start of your day. The breakfast burrito served here is now my favorite breakfast burrito, ever. The burrito comes with a neatly-sliced scrambled egg, avocado, what seems like cream cheese. Choose bacon or sausage to accompany; it's all wrapped in a tortilla for easy handling. Salsa on the side completes the dish. I tend not to go for the lattes. I typically go straight to the point with my caffeine - Espresso, please. 9Bar does serve the espresso with a side of sparkling water to help with the palate. Alternatively, the iced Macha latte is an amazing warm drink for your fix, or a plantation iced tea for those so inclined for a little less buzz for the day. 9Bar, thanks for a great establishment; I'll be here more often than not for an early breakfast before heading out to the shore! read more

This place is my new favorite (even though I don't drink coffee like I used to). I seriously wish I still drank coffee so I could go through their entire menu! I did indulge in a decaf slow pour and it was so good. The extra care they put into your drink is something you can taste. Don't get me started on their scruff ins. Half way through my scruffin I wanted to go back in and buy a dozen more. One filled me up just fine but I got one savory and one sweet so I had to finish the sweet to top it off...I wish I didn't live so far away but maybe it's better for me or I'd be there every morning. Definitely could get addicted to these scruffins easily. I almost didn't want to review since it's small and I don't want it to get too busy. At my first visit, I asked the barista where the name came from and found that a "bar" is a unit of atmospheric pressure. If I have this right, these folks take their espresso to 9 bars of pressure which apparently is optimal for the creation of the perfect espresso drink. And from my perspective, they really seem to have it right. Strong, yes, but also with a creamy smoothness and just the right flavor. I'm afraid they've spoiled me. And then there's the scones. Both savory and sweet choices available characterized by tantalizing flavor and just the right texture: crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. I haven't even tried the other menu items yet, but for an espresso/scone junkie, I have found my fix. read more

Today was the first time I ate at 9Bar HNL. Typically I usually prefer Morning Brew, which is just a few stores down. However, my wife, my 10 month old puppy, and I were in the area and I heard such great things about their cheddar bacon scone. When I approached the restaurant with my puppy in hand, I noticed (1) that another couple had a dog in the establishment as well and (2) there were no signs indicating that only certain type dogs were allowed. Thinking that there were no restrictions on bringing my puppy in, I entered the establishment. I ordered the bacon cheddar scone for myself and a burrito for my wife. I asked the cashier if my wife, my puppy, and I could sit in the corner. She was so kind and said that it wouldn't be a problem. As we sat there, the manager approached us with our food and asked in a very polite manner if my puppy was a service dog. I said "no," and apologized for bringing my puppy into the restaurant. She asked if we could eat outside and I said that it would not be a problem bc I completely understood the "no dogs allowed except service dogs" rule. However, as we sat outside, I couldn't help but notice another patron enter the restaurant with a rather large dog on leash. The patron stood in line to order her coffee with her dog. To save her any embarrassment, I entered the establishment and warned her that if her dog was not a service dog, the manager would ask her to leave. The patron laughed and said that she was a regular and they probably wouldn't ask her to leave. Just like clockwork, the manager came out with a tray full of scones, looked at the non-service dog, turned away, and proceeded to refill the scone display. Needless to say, I was quite annoyed and upset. I understand the need for rules and respect when establishments need to enforce them. However, these rules should be applied to everyone and not on a case-by-case basis. To ask certain individuals to leave bc of their non-service dogs, but to ignore when others are breaking these "rules" is discrimination and should be reported. While I did not make a scene by pointing out to the manager that this dog in her establishment was not a service dog, even though I was asked to leave bc my dog was not, I approached the manager and apologized for bringing my dog in. I explained that others brought their dogs in and since they were not reprimanded or asked to leave, I thought it was acceptable. I also informed the manager that they should put a sign indicating their rule, as it becomes a notice issue. The food at 9Bar HNL was AMAZING! If you don't bring your non-service dog with you, I highly recommend the bacon cheddar scone. But while the food was delicious, I will not be coming back due to the manager's unfair and arbitrary enforcement of their "rules." read more

I love the Cali bowl... do yourself a favor and get that and a bacon chive scruffin... no I didn't spell it wrong it's exactly what it says- a cross between a scone and a muffin... crispy on the outside with some cheese crunchies and bacon pieces on the inside... it is unbelievably good.. disregard your diet or healthy lifestyle and indulge!!! Since 2017, this spot has always been my favorite hangout spot. Now, due to the pandemic, it has become even harder to confidently visit this spot and hang out due to social distancing guidance and stringent prevention methods. 9Bar HNL is responsible for my recent coffee addiction. I used to go to school in Kakaako and was often in need of coffee. Back then, there was only Starbucks, and I never became hooked on coffee. I bought it purely to survive the long hours of studying. Coffee from 9Bar is a different story. I buy it regardless of need. I often just grab a cup to enjoy. Even on days when I don't technically need coffee, and I'm not really in the area, I will take a little detour to buy myself a coffee from here before heading on home. My standard drink (and honestly the only drink that I've tried here since I'm very satisfied always getting it) is an iced latte. I like my lattes very simple - just the coffee and milk, no added flavorings or sugar. Given this, until I had the latte at 9Bar, I never really considered that one latte would be that drastically different from another. A latte is a latte, right? Obviously the true coffee snobs know this is not true, and now I, too, know this is not the case. The latte at 9Bar HNL is very smooth and doesn't have the overpowering bitterness of being over-extracted. The shop is fairly small, so all the seats are usually taken when I stop by in the late morning. It seems like a popular spot to catch up with friends or do some leisurely studying. Service is typically very quick, so it's a good option if you're in a rush. I have only ever waited for more than 5 minutes when I have also ordered food. Overall, it's definitely a great shop to have in Kakaako and one that I wish had opened up several years back. read more

The breakfast burrito was fine...unmemorable. I'm all into fresh & healthy, but please add some moist fluffy eggs, a tiny bit of cheesy filling, and some herbs/flavor. The beans and potatoes seemed flavorless, and if I hadn't got the bacon and dipping sauce it would've been 100% bland (if you need bacon and side sauce to make something taste good, that's not a good sign either). Also, the burrito wrap was just a refrigerated tortilla - I wish it would've been warmed up at least...throw that thing on the grill for a minute on each side and melt the ingredients inside together a bit. The iced matcha latte was fine - tasted a tad powdery. I always love the outdoor seating and vibe at SALT, but with all of the great choices there...I know a better place next door. As much as I love the popular chains around the corner, 9Bar HNL stands out as a place with unique (non-alcoholic) drinks and baked goods that I cannot get elsewhere. Add to that the vegan options and you have a real winner for anyone who expects a little more out of their cafe experience. This place always fills up with friends and good conversation. I like the vibe and would recommend coming here for a social outing. You might feel out of place studying here since it's so popular and you'll be surrounded by lively folks who have a lot to say. Best place to park is either in the private lot (validated ticket) or metered stalls surrounding the Kakaako SALT area. You can't reach the Pokemon gyms from this spot, but really, this is the place to come for good company and it's best to take down Team Mystic in your solo time. read more

I'm still surprised to this new addition to SALT Kakaako. Another coffee shop in kakaako, not to mention Starbucks and Arvo Cafe literally a few feet away. This definitely triggered the reason to visit this small, but very well organized coffee shop. Made a phone order for both of their breakfast bowl and tried a unique grass fed butter coffee. Service on the phone was on point and made sure they got my order correct, also giving me an estimate time as to when my order would be ready. I received the same service I got on the phone, ecstatic and knowledgeable while I walked in as they had my order wrapped up and ready to go. Sizes were limited to 8 and 12 oz and I guess reasonable prices for their coffee. Bowls were a bit pricey, but worth a try as it was very delicious and a great balanced breakfast. This place, I would say is for people who really wants to enjoy their coffee. Looking for latte art, this is your place. However, 3 stars because nothing on the menu screams at me and still why open up another coffee shop in Kakaako? Good luck with the competition. read more

My ACRONYM friend Robert swears by this place if you are a coffee snob. I was not disappointed. I arrived and first found the wrong coffee spot that was pretty big right on the street but wrong name. I luckily found this place in the same building tucked into a small courtyard. And it was small but had a nice crowd. I got the coffee of the day which was Maui this day and it was fresh brewed and I had to wait a couple minutes for that but it was worth it. I drank it black and enjoyed every last drop. I also got one of the chocolate macadamia nut cookies which were really a great investment for my plane trip. It was decadent and a last chance at Macadamia before leaving. My server asked where I was from and I proudly told her Charleston, SC and she was planning on going in a few weeks so I was able to give some advice for her trip. I've been here several times and they really don't disappoint when it comes to brunch. It's basically a coffee shop with loads of goodies to eat. Well that's how I see it. I forgot what the breakfast bowl is called but it comes with roasted potatoes, sour cream, guacamole, pouched egg, BACON, queso fresco cheese, with the yummy hot sauce on the side (or is it salsa?? What ever it was it was nice and spicy). SO GOOD I'm drooling just thinking about it. It so simple but so tasty. I think my favorite thing to get is their scuffins! It's if a scone and a muffin had a baby and there you go. I've got to try their blueberry and mango cream cheese scuffins and they both are excellent! Been eating the scuffins here since this whole covid thing started. They freeze well and taste delicious when toasted! The edges get crispy and delicious, the interior is fluffy and filled with berries, mango etc. I've tried the matcha/white chocolate chip, strawberry/mango and blueberry cream cheese. All of them are insanely yummy! Sure it's on the pricey side but it's supporting a small local business and they're providing tasty treats.
