I had a marvelous experience recently at A-1 Storage in La Mesa, on Center Drive. Glenda was my main point of contact there; she did the initial paperwork with me and got me oriented to my new space. She was also calm, gracious and patient with me when I couldn't figure out how to work my new lock! : ) Glenda gave me an impromptu tutorial, and was so sweet. TBH, when I first called to inquire about renting a unit at this facility, she answered. Her positive energy and friendly demeanor radiated through the phone, which initially brought me in. I was delighted to find out that she was the very same way in person! It is people like Glenda who put a smile on my face; in this day and age, when our nation is so divided and many people feel sad and lost, it's people like Glenda who help to uplift us and set us on the right path. Opened this storage room about 4 years ago and closed it because the rates keep increasing every 10 months. Originally the room was $145 and they increased it over and over again, they wanted to increase it from $228 to $260 per month so I decided to close it out. There was extensive termite damage, termite droppings everywhere, and when you shine a flashlight on the ceiling, you can see sparkly dust - perhaps from the termite wings/caracasses/etc. Luckily almost all my belongings were in air tight sterilite boxes. However, my couch, paintings, and furniture was exposed to the room without covers. When I removed my boxes, I found a lot of termite droppings and dried liquid on the boxes and below them on the floor, even though I did not have any liquids or fluids stored in this unit. If my belongings were not in plastic bins, I do not think they would have made it without significant damage. Now that my boxes are with me at home, I am having to clean them on the outside to remove all the termite and water damage. Basically the water damage is this brown color, looks like a mix of water and termite droppings. The grounds are nice, there is access code to enter, access code to leave. Must be off grounds before 9:45 pm or else they will call you and threaten to close your unit, even though grounds is open til 10 pm. The grounds open early. Staff is rarely in the office but instead are walking around the premises very often. I believe the office hours are 9-5. Not sure if they are there on Sundays. The bathroom is locked and only available during hours that the staff are in the office, given that there is a staff in the office to give you the key. Apparently someone had broken the toilet many years ago and that is why they require a key in the office to open the bathroom. This has always been difficult to navigate as I tend to go to my storage for several hours to sort things and organize etc. Perhaps giving all the units a bathroom key would be best so that we can all use the restroom when we are there. Closest place to stop to go to the bathroom is Target, about 1 mile away. Or perhaps they can have a lock box and you can access the bathroom key with your unit code or with a provided code, and then you can return the key back to the lock box. I'm sure there are many options but they refuse to make any changes to accommodate us for bathroom use when office is closed. I have seen quite a few weird things at this storage center, such as someone working on a vehicle and spray painting in their ground floor access unit, who also cussed me out one night. I asked him to stop paint spraying because it was getting onto my parked car that was parked in the loading zone. I called the office and they said they notified him that this isn't allowed. Not sure if he is still renting here but I sure hope not. Also have seen a car there seemingly overnight, it did not appear to be functional and it looked like someone was trying to fix the vehicle from their ground floor unit. I saw it in the same place two nights in a row with car parts and tools all over the ground. I did not see a person so I assume they were either in their unit or sleeping in the broken down car. Also another time, a man followed me in and didn't look like he entered an access code behind me. He followed me and parked near me. He didn't appear to go into any unit. I stayed in my car and called the security as it was after office hours and dark out. Not sure what happened with that. I believe I drove to another side of the premises and waited a while, then checked and he wasn't there, so then I finally went back to my unit. Another time, a man made fun of me for wanting to social distance during the pandemic in the elevator. I was on it first and he got on the elevator and I said is it safe for us to share the elevator? I assume he was an anti-Vaxxer as well. Overall I give this place 3 stars after 4+ years of being a renter. Thanks to the staff who helped when they could and thanks to the staff who helped me close out the storage. To the staff that were rude and passive aggressive, please go get some customer service knowledge. Thank you! read more

Scams, lies, false ads, elevators broken, carts not available. That pretty much sums it up. The advertisement stated 5x10. The reservation confirmation showed 5x10. It also showed the correct unit number i received. Thus, it is not a mistake such as someone in the office gave me the wrong unit. This is not an indictment of the employees. Let's make that clear. It is about the company, so one can only assume it applies to ALL facilities. The unit was only 5x9. Big deal, huh? It is when you have a 7' couch and a 2 1/2' case you were planning to put behind it. Now, imagine my anger if I had unloaded only to discover this. But with an elevator you have no idea if it working or not, and the other elevator in the other building out of order, you never get the chance. Also, good luck finding a cart. Now, like any store, that might be because extremely lazy people can't bother return it, so you might go hunting all over the place and never find one. However, when there MIGHT be more.than one other person in the building and the place just opened, one would think they would go hunt down stray carts before opening. Even then, what is it? One cart for the entire building? Two, maybe? But on the deceptive advertising, no doubt at a minimum ever unit on that wall is not 10ft. So, ya, for that reason I will probably be visiting the City Attorney for a start. RESPONSE. In the big bold large type, it lists the dimensions which one is led to believe are the dimensions. I am going to be one thing, I am going to assume you never underestimate size, do you? If that case, your "overestimate" is deliberate, intentional, and obfuscating the truth. And no, I resigned the space, paying for it without ever having put a paper clip in it. Warning to prospective customers: don't just trust them, take a tape measure with you BEFORE you sign the appears. Better yet, go elsewhere. I've had multiple units on the east coast and west coast. This has never occurred before. read more
