Emailed them on Saturday regarding a quote that we wanted for tree trimming. They called us Sunday to schedule the appointment for Monday from 10-11am. I was at the house waiting for them from 9-12 on Monday just in case they were running early/behind. They never showed up. Nick Lucgjonaj from A-1 gave me a free estimate to trim two large palm trees on my property. One is a Canary Island palm about 30+ feet high and the other is a Mexican fan palm about 60+ feet high. His price was quite reasonable and much lower than another estimate I received. The A-1 team did a great job of trimming the trees to my complete satisfaction. They also did an excellent job of cleaning up and they carted away all the cut fronds. In the past. other tree trimmers would leave all the fronds on the street for removal by the weekly sanitation workers, leaving me the job of sweeping up the mess they inevitably would leave behind. I liked the fact that A-1 did the whole job, leaving my property in the same condition as before they came. Really should be Zero Stars because they actually came and started the job and then the "boss" showed up and told them to stop and said they should pack up and leave! He told me that the estimate I was given (in writing) was too low for the size of the job. When I reminded him that it was a written estimate that clearly listed the details of the job, he was very rude and did not even seem to want to come to an amicable solution. THAT WAS IT...THEY JUST UP AND LEFT. The next day we received a call from another tree service who said that A-1 Tree Service told them to call us. Too little, too late! So unprofessional. My first experience with A-1 will be my last. The A-1 guy gave me a verbal quote with no paperwork. We agreed on the work to be done and the price over a handshake. Most of the work agreed to was done but not all. When they called for their check, I asked about the remaining work and they told me they forgot to do it. They said they would take care of it when they came to pick up the check. The check was picked up while I was not home and the remaining work was never taken care of. If you are desperate enough to go with these guys, get the quote in writing and don't pay them a dime till everything is perfect. I am going back to Davey tree service. They were cheaper by $400, they gave me a written quote, and they did everything they promised. read more

A-1 Tree Service just pruned a very, very large Chinese Elm on my property. I was very pleased with the results. This is a much better prune than I received the first time I had it trimmed with another company. I received 3 quotes from legitimate tree trimming companies, and A-1 had the lowest price. Nick even showed up on a Sunday to give me the quote. Besides the work I paid for, A-1 even did minor work to other trees on my property. I haven't seen this before! Extra credit to A-1. My property was cleaned up well after the job. What I found really interesting is that when I inquired about the need for a permit (San Jose requires a permit for trees at the curb), Nick advised me to get one (which I did), and that it was free. Most contractors seem to say "don't bother" because they often don't want to be responsible for the results. I would definitely use them again. read more

This guy calls me to let me know he is waiting for me at my house with out even setting up an appointment. I basically had to stop everything I was working just to see him. When I get back and took him out to look at the tree he asked me how much i have been quoted from others. I answered him and the guy rudely just walked off on me. Way to waste my time. read more

Don came out the same day I called to give me a quote to trim my mulberry trees in my backyard. Once we agreed upon the amount, he sent his crew out on the day that he had promised. I did not have to be there and when I returned home, t he work had been completed and all debris was hauled away. They did a great job and Don made sure that I was happy with the project and result. I approached five or six different tree companies via Yelp, had a couple give me an estimate on trimming two large trees. Several never got back to me. One guy made an appt for Saturday morning, didn't show, and didn't answer the phone or respond to my messages. I wanted more than just two estimates, so in frustration, I went back on Yelp and contacted A-1. The phone service was excellent, and within an hour, Don called me. He came later that day, and gave an estimate that was about a third of the price the highest of the other two companies quoted! What's more, he arranged to come on Monday morning to do the job. He arrived fifteen minutes early with his crew. We discussed the job, then he left them to it. I would say that if you have a job that isn't straightforward - like we weren't sure exactly how far we wanted each tree cut, it's good to stay home while they work and check in regularly. They were cool with our discussions at each stage about which boughs to cut, trim, or leave alone. I wish I spoke Spanish, but we all made ourselves understood, and the guys were friendly and cool about it. The end result was that we were really happy with how our trees looked. Don checked in with us a couple of times during the day, and we had his number. If we'd wanted, we could have called him, but we did fine. The guys cleaned up, took away most of the chippings, and only stacked the street in front of our house, even though our neighbors had said it was fine to use their space too. All that was left was the city clearing the piles the next morning. Easy! For a third of the cost of any other quote, I thoroughly recommend these guys! read more
