Nothing is harder than being hundreds of miles away from your child when they break down. The helplessness feeling was horrible. I have taken two cars to A & A Automotive for pre-purchase inspections (PPI, aka buyer's checks). Both inspections were thorough and honest. We were treated with respect, and our questions were answered in detail. This is a multi-generational family-owned business, and I have had positive interactions with each generation and multiple levels of staff, from the owners, managers, and mechanics. Note, because this matters to some: I'm a woman and have not experienced any patronizing treatment. I've only had positive interactions with their team. The first car I brought in for inspection had very high miles but they learned that it was in fantastic mechanical condition--and since that was unlikely, the rest of their team joined in on the inspection to keep searching for some flaw that had been missed. They found nothing significant and gave us a list of the maintenance and repairs we should expect over the next few years, how much they would typically cost, and when we should expect them. That gave us the confidence needed to purchase the car and drive it across the country the next day. The second car I brought in had low miles, was in great exterior condition, and drove wonderfully. I only had it inspected for peace of mind. The A & A team found a host of problems under the surface. They learned that the car had internal parts held together by zip-ties, multiple leaks, and was almost certainly an unreported flood car. I had trouble starting my car about three weeks ago and dropped it off at A&A. As a young woman, mechanics and shop owners tend to talk at me about my car instead of talk with me or try to rip me off and say something's wrong when it's not. That doesn't happen here and I really appreciate that. Everything that went on with my car was explained to me respectfully. My car ended up staying for 5 days, but for a good reason. When I dropped it off, it had taken me a few tries to start it. As soon as my car was in the shop, it stopped acting up. Adam Jr called me a few days later to ask if I wanted to pick it up or leave it there to keep trying. He didn't want to sell me a car part without making sure that what he thought was wrong was actually the problem. That right there is why I will come back to A&A if my car has another problem. He didn't try to rip me off! I decided to leave it there and eventually my car did have problems starting again. The mechanics were finally able to confirm what was wrong with it. I got a call that morning about replacing the car starter and starter relay and by lunch, my car was ready to go! This place was beyond great and helped me save over $5,500 on work that another company who shall not be named (Firestone) had told me i needed to get done. Was told I needed a new engine block ($6k) because I had a "leaking head gasket" by Firestone. I called BS, and came to A&A only to find out that I only needed a new thermostat (~$300). Adam was amazing and extremely helpful, honest, and trustworthy. From the time I made my first call about getting my truck in, to the moment I left with my keys, it took less than 36 hours and my truck was running PERFECTLY. I had to wait almost a week to get in, to put my window modulator(passenger) side and also wanted to flush radiator. I expected $200.00 at the most and it ended up costing me $1200.00. I did not give them permission to do a diagnosis on my alternator, $79.00, my son could have done that for me . trying to charge me almost $400.00 for an alterator and I still needed a new battery. Charged me $130.00 t0 flush radiator. Other places only charge $80.00. Adam Jr. is the most rudest person I have ever dealt with!!! Charged me $60 for a diagnostic and all they did was check my radiator pressure. Told me I needed a new radiator and thermostat and gave me an estimate of over $500. Got an estimate from Japanese Auto Repair and it was less than half of that. Nice people but charge way too much for minimal effort. Sorry fellas, not going to y'all again. Save your money and go to Japanese Auto Repair. He does not charge for diagnostics EVER. Only reason I went here was because it was closer and a friend said it was a good choice. NIGHTMARE experience that's still going on. The younger guy (Adam Jr.) is that weird kind of rude where he talks all over the top of you but thinks it's polite because he calls you "ma'am." But I'm used to it (especially as a woman of color), and I ended up taking my car there on a Friday because they are open on Saturdays and they said they could have it fixed by Monday. Was it ready on Monday? No. Did they call me to let me know I was going to need to wait some more, or why? No. I had to call them. I told them I needed to have it by Wednesday so I could drive back to Houston for a job, and they assured me it would be ready by Tuesday. Same song and dance, I had to contact them to find out they were now promising Wednesday, and then Wednesday came along and surprise surprise, they were waiting on a $6 crankshaft sensor connector to replace one they said was "all corroded" yet somehow never saw in the 6 days they had been "working" on my car. So they said they would deliver the car to my apartment complex while I was out of town working, and what choice did I really have but to agree? 1 week later (YESTERDAY) I call and they ask me, "When are you coming back?" As if it matters--you said you'd deliver it while I was gone! It's been almost 2 weeks since I first brought my car in for a 2-day job, and they're still talking (over the top of me, even when I literally asked him not to TWICE) about taking everything apart and doing it all over again. I wouldn't recommend this place unless you either know a lot about cars and can check them or know nothing about cars and won't know the difference. They don't actually look at your car carefully before beginning, so they just waste a lot of your time trying to bill you for expensive repairs when it was probably just a $6 connector all along. read more

I needed a new battery on my Volkswagen Jetta. I was recommended here by the staff at O'reilly's and they lead me in the right direction! I called up to A&A, arrived 5 minutes after my call and was out of there in 30 minutes. The staff was lovely over the phone and in person. I went to another shop in town and they quoted me much higher than this shop, and tried to tell me that I needed to replace 2 parts on top of what I already needed. Came to this shop and had them check it out. They told me that the 2 parts in fact did not need to be replaced and were perfectly fine. Quoted me much less than the other shop and they were extremely helpful, honest, and nice. As your typical broke college student I definitely appreciated them not trying to take advantage of me and charge me an arm and a leg. It did take an overnight stay for my car, but it was worth it to get my car done by them. read more

5/23/14 update: since my initial visit on 9/25/13, I've been back to have my leaking valve cover gasket replaced & since then, no more leaks. 5/21/14 I had them replace my oil pan gasket & I can now park on my driveway again without any more leaks! 5/22/14 I had them fix a problem where all but my driver's side door locks were working. They found that the wires that go through my drivers door had broken from years of use. Now all my door locks work! They continue to be super honest guys to work with. Took my Ford F-150 Platinum in to get a leveling spacers out in between the cab and front struts. They told me the spacers didn't line up correctly with the bolt pattern. They charged me $90 for labor. After examining my truck I noticed that nothing was tampered with, the lug bolts hadn't been removed nor my struts. I took the spacer and laid it on top of the strut under the hood and it lined up perfectly. Took it back up there and they said they'd do it at a discount. They're dishonest and will screw you if you don't know what you're talking about. After getting it home they had also left the bolts on the passenger side strut not torqued down. Had to argue with the guy and explain to him what he was looking at like I was the one wrong. read more

Went in to A&A today to get my truck inspected. I live near Driftwood, well within Hays County, but have an Austin address (this address is on my proof of insurance). However, the truck has a Hays registration sticker, and has always been inspected in Hays. Upon seeing the Austin address, the fellow behind the counter refused to inspect the truck, assuming it was a Travis country truck and subject to different inspection rules. Upon explaining that I live in Hays, have always gotten it inspected in Hays, etc, he rudely called me a law-breaker, and told me to call DPS and that they'd reaffirm what he said. Angry, I went somewhere up the street and had a different shop inspect it, without a hitch. Called DPS anyway later, and wouldn't you know it, the A&A guy was wrong! I have a daughter in San Marcos, I am in Florida working. I would usually check out her car myself, but again I am in Florida. We needed a mechanic, I found a few choices on Yelp. She chose A&A, and dropped her car off to get checked out. I called to explain I was in Florida, I was paying, explained the issues she had been having. I basically gave them an open wallet and free reign to find and fix any issues. To be honest I was ready to be taken to the cleaners, and I was good with that if it meant her car was fixed and I didn't have to worry about her breaking down on the side of the rode at midnight. I spoke with Adam, they checked out the car, fixed one issue, checked out some other issues. Adam called me the next day to thoroughly explain everything that was done. The charges were far less than I expected. Having a place I can send my daughter to without reservation is worth a lot. Thanks Adam. read more

A job that usually takes 1 day ended up taking one week because of one incompetent mechanic. I went their to get two bearing pressed. I had already had the steering knuckle in the shop. Took them two days just to get too it. Then they realized they need special tool and took two days to get get job done. They realize I needed new hub. They ordered wrong hub and the had to wait two more day. Then they gave me knuckle back all messed it. it won't even work properly because the dust shield is all bend and torn. Plus they lost the dust cap and then blamed it on me saying I lost it. I had to special order a new one and then they told me they found it in shop. Worthless. I had to be without a vehicle for one whole week because they could not do one job, press in a wheel bearing. It would be fine if they informed me that they could not press the bearing because they do not have the tool. I would of been ok with but they claimed they could do it. I will never go to them again. read more
