I have used Riley Transmissions at least 8 to 10 times in past years. This is a family run business and they have 40+ years of experience. Joan is the owner/manager and she is GREAT! Friendly and honest, she is the reason I keep coming back again and again. Of course, her husband is great too. All the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. This time I had a particularly technical job, but probably simple for them. Transmission fluid and filter change -- but the vehicle is not the norm. A Mercedes SL550. The cost of the service was very reasonable! OMG, I saved big bucks. I brought my 1992 Civic VX, which has a very rare, hard to rebuild 5 speed standard transmission. Nobody in Austin would touch it. It has special, very tall highway gears. Riley rebuilt it for a very good price. I was nervous about the transmission as I had 489,000 miles on it and wasn't sure it could be rebuilt. They did an amazing job, I have 4,000 miles on it and it is completely quiet, shifts perfectly, feels like when my car was brand new. Yes, I have had it 24 years! No leaks, noises, grinds, nothing. Performs like new. It was not much more than buying a used transmission on Ebay, and now it is like new. They are very nice, showed me around the shop. You won't be disappointed, they are the real deal. I guess I will see them again in 2040! read more

Refused to warranty a Ford F-250 transmission with under 20k miles on it. Said it was installed wrong which is a complete LIE. It wouldn't make 20k miles if it was installed wrong. Bob has no business building transmissions or directing others. This is my third chance with these guys and they have messed up all three times and tried to blame it on anything else except their poor workmanship and lack of knowledge. read more

I've been going to Riley's since 1998. I was in college there at the time, and the Bronco II I was driving then had what I thought was torque converter lock up issues. Took it to them expecting a big bill. They found it was just a bad spark plug causing it to lug in overdrive, fixed it, and charge was very reasonable. They never tried to upsale me like a lot of other shops do. Fast forward through the years and I've continue to use them for all driveline work, even though I don't live in San Marcos anymore. Recently, my son and I have been restoring that same Bronco II for him to drive, and I drove it all the way back to San Marcos for them to rebuild the transmission, install a new driveshaft, and go through the rear end. They did, they did it right, and the pricing was still very good. Through the years I've come to know Bob and Joan Riley, as well Bob Jett well, and they are all good people that I trust. I'll continue to use them as long as I can for any driveline work. read more

My daughter was going to school in San Marcos, we live in the Houston area, and her transmission had to be rebuilt. Riley's did the work (for a very large sum of money) and several month's later it had to be rebuilt again by another company in the Conroe, TX area. The repairs were paid for by Riley Transmission except for the towing ($125.00), even though it was their poor workmanship that caused it to break down again. You'll have to make your own decision whether to use them or not, but I will never allow them to service another vehicle of mine or refer anyone to take their vehicle to them. read more

I took my car was towed to Riley transmission for a transmission replacement September 26 2014. the work was completed November 6 but the shifter wouldn't go into 1,2,3rd. Bob Riley told me to take it home and drive it, bring it back Monday and he would fix the shifter.There is a video of me driving to the shop and conversing with Bob about it. He stated on the work order the engine has a miss/cant fine tune. I replaced the plugs and found the #5plug wire not properly attached to the distributor before i drove it back Monday for him to fix the shifter. Six months later I need a new a new motor. We pay up front $5255.12 for the parts and labor. It was May 7 2015 when the engine was purchased. And Bob Riley told me 2 weeks and the car would be ready. six months later he tells me its ready. When i go to test drive the car the new motor has to be started with starter fluid the engine is not idling good and during the test drive the return hose on the new power steering pump breaks and the car smokes out they hadrea as we set at the red light. When I asked him later about replacing the hoses when the pump was replaced, He stated he was trying to save me money! Although he charged me for adhesive to replace a review mirror that wasn't asked for. Charged me more to rebuild a carb that doesn't work than a new one that is built for the motor. He didn't replace the hose from the fuel pump to carb he just rebuilt and when i asked about it I was told "Your being very picky" I have a manual choke attached to an automatic carb! the new headers are stained with power steering fluid, the car doesn't idle good, the motor is covered in green goo the hood is covered in oil,the lights don't work the dash lights don't work yet you text me "its ready to go home" I have never experienced such disregard for another's property with an attitude to boot. My experience with Riley's was not so great. Third and fourth gear in my '97 GM Z71 went out, so I called Riley's and had my truck towed to their shop. They estimated the cost at $2,480, which turned out to be the final tab. It took them 10 days to complete the job - strike one. I was told they warrantied their work but they reneged (after I paid the bill) due to a subpar scan (between 83% and 86%) of my truck's "engine load efficiency." Nothing was told to me about a 90% engine efficiency rating needed to qualify for their warranty. Strike two. Two excellent mechanics I personally know have since told me that engine efficiency has nothing to do with the transmission. My two mechanic friends and I remain stumped and disappointed. As to the reliability of Riley's rebuild of my transmission, I guess I'll have to wait and see. Stuck without the warranty, and waiting, was strike three. read more
