I went here last night even tho I've been going here for years and let me say, the prices are unbelievable low and they have lots of foods varieties, not just for the Asian community, but for all walks of life. Love this Asian Market. I can spend hours in this place. I love cooking. Asian food is my favorite and I'm guaranteed to find everything I need here when trying new recipes. I love the fresh seafood. This place is especially convenient on Sundays because most seafood markets in the area are closed on Sundays. The guys in the back butchering the fish are always quick. Worst customer service. There were so many more registers that could've been opened yet they had one opened with 11 people standing in line and 2 women checking out at the ONE register ... soo stupid. When my boyfriend got to the register they told him that it's a limit of $5 for card use so I had to add my stuff to his. But it's like, at least have a sign up. Afterward, I went over to the restaurant area to get a boba slushee. I got a passion fruit one. The slushee itself tasted good, was just really really sweet. But the boba was GROSS. It was so nasty and tasted old to the point where I just had to throw the whole thing away. Mind you, I love boba so this has never happened with any boba place I've gone to. That's not all though. When the lady was done preparing my slushee and handed it to me, I pulled out my card to hand to her. She then said they don't accept card in that area. I'm like lady!!! Tell me before-hand or at least have a sign up. She then proceeded to write my total on a paper. I then had to go to the line I was in previously and pay for my slushee which was $2.99. But then the $5 limit on cards was still a thing of course so I had to add some items to it. Bottom line is, the store's customer service isn't good and it seems pretty unclean. Grand Asia Market (GAM), looks like you've got a bit of competition now! Cause way down on S. Wilmington Street in Raleigh is A&C Market. A lot bigger than GAM, A&C is similar but still going through some growing pains. The aisles are wide and easy to manuever through but I'm not sure if they have any heat! I froze my butt off during my visit today... A&C has got the usual Asian produce, meat/seafood, frozen and dry goods section along with a housewares area, decorative junk and a small hot foods bar. Biggest gap is the lack of a bakery along with the popular bubble tea that you can get at GAM's wonderful cafe. However A&C does have an aisle for restaurant supplies and equipment if you're in the business and need some stuff. I'm pretty sure this place is new so it'll probably evolve and change quickly. A&C is definitely more spacious than GAM and similar in terms of variety and assortment. And prices may be a touch lower than GAM, I'll need to so more shopping to find out for sure. But what's great is you've got another choice for Asian foodstuffs, especially if you live in downtown or S. Raleigh. So welcome to the hood, A&C Market! read more

It's been 6 years since the last time I was at this grocery store. Returned today. Biggest update: There is no more bakery. Compared to Grand Asia (Cary) and Li Ming's (Durham), I would place A & C the last. The store is fine, but I don't think I'll be returning since Li Ming's and Grand Asia is closer for me and serves better Chinese groceries and produce. As of now, Grand Asia is the only Chinese grocery store in the area I know that has a bakery. It also looks to serve the best hot food counter compared to the other two Chinese grocery stores. read more

I go to this place every now and then due to its convenient location. Parking lot is small, space is tight rather and there are always commerical trucks parked taking multiple parking spots. I really dislike going in there sometimes because of the smell. I don't know exactly what it is but it's a combination of fish, chinese food, and cleaning chemicals. You can smell it the moment you walk in -not pleasant. I come here because some of the korean noodles I get are cheaper here than Hmart. Though, I always double check the expiration as they do have a lot of expired items. They do not have variety like Grand Asia or Hmart. I have tried their food but for the price, it's very low quality. There a few reasons I don't come here as often as I'd like to. Considering how much chemical I can smell, this store is not clean. They have boxes everywhere, some of them don't even have prices on them (and when they ring it up at the register, it's more expensive than HMart), but the main reason is their poor customer service. They have so many registers available yet they only have 1 open. There could be 10 people in the line and they will only have 1 register open. BUT they would have 2 people working at the same register- 1 cashier and 1 bagger. WHY? Also, their cashiers are always rude. They won't even greet you, even when you have your hand out to get your card/change back, they put it on the counter for you to pick it up, some of them don't speak English, most of all, they are obnoxious and loud. I normally go to Hmart which is a long 30+ minute drive from home. We eat a lot of Asian-type dishes with a lot of fresh produce that can't be found at normal grocery stores. If I just need an item or two it is a waste to drive all that way, but A&C is just down the road a bit and will make my life so much easier! Things I like: - They have a large variety of fresh produce! - They have a large section of kitchen stuff and restaurant grade storage containers. Also great dishes! - Wide variety of fresh seafood and quite a few that I have never seen sold before in stores like Geoduck, etc. Things I didn't like: - Finding things can be a little difficult. They have isles that are labeled, but also a lot of end-caps that don't really make much sense to me. - We were looking specifically for spicy dried squid, spicy vinegar, and tamarind candy and they didn't have any. - They don't carry much Filipino food/brands. Overall, I would shop here regularly. I will now only journey to Hmart when I need to stock up on some things A&C don't carry. Very happy to have found this place. read more

Came back here after a while and wasn't thrilled. I purchased some groceries and bought some takeout. What's Hot - Their deli section has a decent variety and number of selections. Whenever I go to an Asian grocery store, it's a bonus if they have a takeaway section. - They have a small bakery section. They have a decent number of sweet treats, which aren't completely catered to the local non Asian population, which is always a plus. (No offense, haha) - Decent selection/variety. They have seasonal produce, fresh seafood, meats, frozen section (which includes dumplings, dim sum, frozen seafood, etc....) They're not too limited in what they offer and are pretty competitive. The brands and labels they offer are recognizable. They have Asian American products (like Pocky sticks) and products from overseas (tofu, dim sum, etc...) What's Not - Their deli/takeout section costs a little more than before. $6.48 for a takeout box that comes with rice and 3 dishes. The portions aren't generous. Don't be prepared for leftovers and it'll be hard to split one takeout box between 2 people. - Deli section doesn't take credit card. On the one hand, I'm not surprised because many Asian places prefer cash to credit. On the other hand, it sucks because many of us don't carry much cash. - Prices. Many of their products (fresh groceries, frozen section, etc...) are priced in bulk. Sometimes these are seasonal specials, but I noticed many of their fresh produce are priced in bulk, as well. I think it makes it less user friendly. - Disorganized. There isn't a natural flow to their layout. It seems like it's mishmashed. For example, they only have a couple frozen/cold aisles, which are towards the middle near the produce. I'm used to frozen aisles at the edge of a grocery store. Their layout threw me off. I recommend Grand Asia Market any day over A&C market. I shop at the Grand Asia Market all the time with my mother, and there is a much larger variety of food from China, Japan, Korea, as well as many other countries, and they are always very well stocked. When I can't find what I'm looking for at Grand Asia, the associates go above and beyond to help, including going into the stock room to search for the product. A&C does not have as much variety as Grand Asia, and the associates are not as helpful. Worst of all, all of the frozen items I purchased had obviously been thawed out, and one product was tore open and visibly spoiled, and had to be tossed. I am very dissatisfied and will never return to A&C. read more

A & C is one of the 3 Chinese Supermarkets in the Triangle area (the others being Grand Asia in Cary and Li Ming in Durham). A & C is personally my least favorites of the three. It's out of the way (from where I live), the place is cold so it makes trips unpleasant and the floor and tables are dirty. A & C is a great place to get groceries. There is a ton you can buy like different vegetables, fish, meats, dried foods, and even cooking equipment. If there's a Chinese ingredient you need to buy then A & C will have it! Everything here is cheaper than the other supermarkets, too. There is also a small "restaurant" inside the store. There is a food counter where there is food that has been sitting around under a hot lamp. There is also a menu if you want to order soup. The food is pretty good and sorta authentic, but I don't like the sitting area because it is always so dirty. You can also buy Chinese buns at the restaurant (though no fresh steamed buns). The quality of the food is not bad, but the restaurant is lacking other items such as dim sum and bubble tea, which you would be able to find at the other 2 grocery stores. read more

If you complain about the smell (they do have a good array of fresh meat & seafood besides the rows and rows of frozen ones), then obviously you have not been to Asia so hush. It's not that this place is filthy, but common seafood, durian, jackfruit, etc stinks! (If you're near the seafood section of Lowe's Food, they stink like hell too so what's the diff?). This place is old so don't expect much. I love this spot, however, because it's closer to home and I don't have to travel to Grand Asia in Cary. They basically have everything that Grand Asia has to offer except perhaps a better pastry shop (and they don't have bubble teas either). But unlike Grand Asia, it's roomier and there's significantly less people. Versus H Mart (which is mostly Korean items), they offer more varieties of Asian items. True, H Mart is immaculately clean but I can't find anything I want in that damn store. All Asian supermarkets are not created equal; sure we all look alike (zing!) but there are always some difference. I've been here since they open the first day. I should know. A & C Supermarket, or "Mei-ah" as MY PEOPLE called it, is a lot closer than Grand Asia Market, and A LOT LESS people. Maybe it seem like a lot less people because A&C is definitely much bigger than GAM, all the while serving the same amount of Asian grocery. A&C does serve a more extensive selection of fish balls than GAM. One thing though, there are something here cost a few dimes more than GAM, but just a few items. As far as fresh food court, the menu is not as extensive as GAM, but just about every dish I tasted was pretty good. read more

This is where America stops, and Asia begins! I love the variety of the store and its unusual choices! The fish department reminds me of some seaport little shop, with live fish swimming around and octopus all killed and thrown in bizarre poses. However for the western trespasser it can get weird and dangerous. Huge duck eggs with live fetuses inside is only one example. Pigs feet, frozen blood, someone's ears. This place has the cheapest lunch in town! You can get a meal box with rice and 3 sides for only $4.99 with a student ID and $5.79 for everyone else. The quantity of food that they give you is huge and the options for the meal box are all very authentic. Whenever I come here with my family, we would go for the 3 course meal. It comes with steamed fish, half roast duck, and stir fired vegetable. The fish is steamed with soy sauce and top with ginger and scallion. It is very well-seasoned and the meat tends to be soft and tender. However, the fish is sometimes not scaled well. I love the roast duck here. It has really crispy skin and right amount of smokiness. I do wish that it is more consistent in the salt level. It has the tendercy to be very salty once in a while. The stir-fried vegetable is always very good. The type of greens used is different every time I go. I like enjoy the strong garlic flavor from the large pieces of garlic that are visible in the dish. Aside from the meals, there is also a bakery section. For the cakes and buns, you get 2 free when you purchase 8 of them. The slice breads are buy one get one free. This grocery store carries lots of variety of food. I would not recommend getting the fresh meat here as they don't get lots of traffic and might not be the highest quality. I never had the same problem with the seafood since I would go for the live tilapia. I am not sure about the rest of the selection. read more

This Asian supermarket is located right by where I live so it's my "go to" store. I like to stop in during the morning hours. There aren't many people there during the morning unless it's a Sunday. I've been on Sunday's before and it's like a scene from China town where everyone is fighting for the best veggies and seafood (reminds me of San Fran - China town in the mornings). I've checked out the food bar but nothing ever looks appetizing to me. There are many cash registers but there are only one that's open. Most times, it's just one cash register which creates a long line. Overall, it has everything that you need to cook Asian dishes. read more

I found this market by accident as I was leaving Auto Zone which is in the same plaza further down. I was about to break down and settle for a fast food burger, which I rarely ever do, from the Cookout location that is right across from this market in the same parking lot, when I thought, well this market looks way more interesting and I'd bet that they will have roasted duck etc which is way better than an ordinary burger! And yes, they have great duck options here! By the whole, half or a smaller portion with rice. And they have a small but excellent selection of cooked authentic Chinese dishes on a steam table. You can pick several items plus rice for a very low price. But, I'll warn you that if you don't speak or understand Asian languages/dialects, there are will be communication problems with the restaurant portion of this market in particular. I had to ask a Chinese customer to help communicate what I was asking twice! So, don't expect to get a clear answer as to what each item on the hot bar is; just pick what looks interesting and good to you. I particularly liked the eggplant dish, Chinese broccoli and some sort of vegetable assortment that had exotic things in it like lotus root. I also ordered a half of a roasted duck after the counter lady had misunderstood and misinformed me when I had first asked about being able to get a smaller portion. I would have if I had known before I ordered the half. But I ate leftovers of it the next day in Chinese pancakes with julienned scallion onions and hoisin sauce (a la Peking style) that I bought on their market side. Also, for you Caucasians that will have language difficulties there, I am informing you that you can go over to the incredible seafood market area and pick out a live lobster and then bring it over to the restaurant and they will cook it for you in an Asian style and serve it to you so you can eat it in the restaurant seating area (for $27). I don't know if they will cook up any other types of seafood that you may purchase. I was very impressed with the diverse and exotic seafood variety that the seafood market portion of the store offers either live in tanks or on trays of ice. They have lots of items that you won't find elsewhere, like geoduck, razor clams, a variety of other types of clams and cockles in a range of sizes and big shrimp with the heads on as well as a huge selection of finned fish, lobster, oysters and crabs! And the produce department is equally impressive! They have many exotic fruits, vegetables and tubers that I'm not even familiar with! I love dragon fruit and they had the largest ones that I've ever seen in person, and in the white or red variety! And if you love mushrooms, then you need to see the wide variety that they offer.....beautiful and fresh! You can get bigger quantities of fresh herbs, like basil and mint etc, for less here. And if you run a restaurant or catering company, they sell produce by the case as well. I don't think you'll find a better overall selection of mundane and exotic produce elsewhere and at such good prices. Then they have the dry goods shelved aisles. And a selection of restaurant and/or home kitchen utensils, serving dishes and equipment. But before you checkout at the registers, you will be further tempted by a wall of Asian pastries and buns to the left! A woman grabbed up all of the sesame red bean balls which are larger than I've seen before and looked great, so I plan to go back earlier next time in hopes of scoring one of those! I tried a coconut-filled bun and it was very fresh and good. So, yes, I was very happy that I stumbled upon this market before I had settled on something inferior. There is something for everyone here! Try something different! You may not be aware of what you're missing out on in life, especially if you just routinely frequent boring American burger joints that offer little nutrition either. read more

After driving all the way to Durham to visit Li Ming, I learned that A&C was a lot closer to me and under the same ownership. So...I made the trip. A&C is located in a semi-rundown area, but that just makes it a gem in the dust. It's the largest asian supermarket I have ever been to! Walking in, you can definitely tell it's owned by the same person/people that own Li Ming as the setup is similar. Immediately after walking into the store, you see a small area of baked goods and behind it is the "food court". Same prices as Li Ming and similar selections (though not as many). Choose three entrees and it'll only set you back $5.79! ($4.29 for students) The rest of the supermarket is HUGE, but honestly there's probably the same amount of stuff as Grand Asia, just more room to walk about. There's fresh seafood and a small area of meats and a big area of boxed instant noodles and bagged rice. Basically what you would expect from an Asian supermarket. Prices are generally the same--some items I picked up were cheaper at the other markets and some were more expensive...so it kind of evened out to be the same as going somewhere else. If you live in the Raleigh side of the Triangle and don't want to make the trek over to Durham to visit Li Ming, then give A&C a try! read more

Sometimes I just have something on the brain. It's been a while since I made my way over to A&C. Since Grand Asia Market was both figuratively and literally "dry" earlier today when I went to get some plum wine, I decided to revisit A&C tonight. It was better than I remembered. The aisles are wider and better stocked than GAM. Tons of dried, preserved fruit. I grabbed some waxberry, which I've never tasted before, and it's delicious. Like a mix between a cherry and strawberry (pit included). The selection of Thai food/dessert is much, much wider. I am particularly fond of a dried banana/pistachio/caramel that they previously carried. Settled for some lemon/lemongrass sugar wafers instead. And cleaner. The store is much, much cleaner than it was before, miles better than GAM. They had just finished a fresh, storewide mopping when I arrived. The offerings are all attractively merchandised, the store is well-lit, and everything looks fantastic. Their dessert/bakery section is full of more pre-made cakes and buns, so I guess GAM has a leg up there. My nose knows the place is better, as the nasty off smells of the fish/meat area over at GAM are not present here. Just because you have a fishmarket doesn't mean it has to smell bad. I was in a fish market in Ireland of three times the size that still smelled of the sea, and not so much decaying fish. The checkout area, while still old, had an updated POS system. And yes, they had not one, but two varieties of my plum wine. My brain can shut up now. BOTTOM LINE: Better selection. Better merchandising. More organized. A cleaner store. A&C was and is my Asian market of choice, for the foreseeable future. read more

I love this place. I haven't done a lot of comparison with Grand Asia because this place is closer to my house, but this place seems to have a pretty good selection and good (cheap!) produce. It's a little overwhelming looking at racks covered with different brands of soy sauce or noodles or whatever, but I can usually find what I'm looking for (sometimes by asking other customers for help) and it's inspired me to get more adventurous in my cooking. Two things I really like about this place: (1) The food court/cafeteria, where you can get a big plate of food for less than six bucks. I have no idea what anything is, but I point and they tell me what kind of meat is in each dish and I pick what looks good. They've got a spicy chicken dish that's particularly yummy. (2) They have a selection of cooking equipment and restaurant supplies as well. I got a great wok for like $15 and they have all kinds of stuff from rubber gloves and salt shakers to rice cookers and giant three-foot-wide woks. Finally, it's clean, not crowded, and there's always room in the parking lot. So glad to have this nearby. read more

It's no Grand Asia, but they do offer things that are different and their Pork and Char Siu is really good. If you're shopping for groceries, the safer bet would be to shop at Grand Asia. You may find some things cheaper here but be careful as many items are past due. It really only earns at least three stars from me because of the awesome meal you can buy in the dining area. As someone has mentioned below, it is a LOT of food. $4.99 w/ student ID and $5.79 without. Great tasting food. You get rice and you get three choices of what you want. I would recommend the sweet pork, chicken, and spicy chicken. I won't be returning to shop here but rather to get really good, really affordable lunch/dinner. Edit: I came back a dropped one star on the food area because if you're eating, and the guy just decides he wants to clean the floor, he won't give two sh*ts about that fact that you're eating. He will mop your feet and everything. So be aware, if you eat here after 7pm-ish, get it to go. Giving 2 stars because they have the worst customer service ever. Literally have no value for their customers. I like buying seafood there and it's been ok but if you buy anything you must make sure it's in good condition otherwise no store credit no fresher produce nothing will be offered to you in replacement of the bad product. I have bought garlic here and it was bad the same night I brought it home but I didn't get a chance to contact the store until two days after and the manager made sure to hold that against me very well. Visited here about two years later, and the selection has greatly improved! Some of the prices are slightly cheaper than Li Ming's too (also run by the same owner, as I was told). I like how this place isn't super crowded like it is in Grand Asia Market during the peak hours. read more

I had a very dissapointing situation early sunday afternoon. I went to the A&C Supermarket to get some dinner to go and was looked over after being second in line to order, mind you, I'm african american and 6ft.2in. and the two couples next in line beside me happen to be asian. I basically went there because of the authentic chinese cuisine and was a regular customer there. For the past year, it's been the same lady serving me everytime, even on sunday, but for some reason, she decides to serve her fellow asians before me. Needless to say I was pissed, but I didn't cause a scene, but left angry and more so, dissapointed. As for me, They will never EVER see a dime of my money again. Yeah, Grand Asia is the more popular place but where I live (42/50) A&C is more convenient and has everything I need for basic Asian cooking. That and it's on my way home from NCSU. They have fresh produce, fresh seafood, plenty of cookware and kitchenware for the home. For more unique items, I will go to Grand Asia for Chinese, S Mart for Korean items or Bitter Melon in Angier for Filipino and Toyo Shokuhin for Japanese foods. The "restaurant" side is not bad either, especially when you get there just when the food comes out hot! Yummy. I just wish we had more choices closer to Garner but only time will tell. read more
