The sandwich was good but the lady that takes orders has no customer service. She doesn't smile and looks cranky. She also will pick up a phone order while helping a customer in store while they wait for her to finish the phone order. So glad I spent a couple minutes looking for a place on Yelp to grab a bite between Scottsdale and Joshua Tree. I never like the "easy stop" at a chain restaurant. This place was AWESOME! Even though we got there at 12:30 and the height of lunch rush, the hostess/cashier/owner worked quickly and efficiently taking orders, cashing out, answering the phone and making sure orders were delivered promptly. I followed other reviewers suggestions and got the turkey sandwich. Cravable? You bet!! (We took our sandwiches out so when I discovered how good the bread was it was too late to go back!) My son got the pastrami, and it was delicious. Not too spicy, right ratio of bread to meat. Not sure we will ever have reason to return to Blythe CA but I would highly recommend you stop here for a sandwich while getting gas for the rest of your desert ride. read more

Wow what a wonderful find! Had the turkey sandwich on the cranberry bread. It was delicious. Alex is chef and he is awesome! So accommodating and helpful in explaining the ingredients. He makes the bread fresh everyday. We had to take a loaf home. I got one from the back that he sliced for me as they were gone upfront! They don't last long, I am sure. The staff were all so amazing and friendly. It's a small place with a big heart and excellent food! Thanks for making our stop in Blythe so awesome! We stopped for lunch in Blythe, California. The goal: find a locally owned place instead of fast food or Subway. We ended up at A & R Bakery & Deli. It is what it's name says: a deli and a bakery. And they make you feel welcome when you walk in the door. My youngest had the special of the day, which was grilled cheese. He said "its good, its real cheesy, it's really good." It came with lot of fries that he ate most of. Number two had a Philly cheesesteak. She loved it, but thought there were a few too many peppers on the sandwich. She dug the fries too. Number three had a pastrami sandwich. He said it was fantastic. He liked the mix of pickles, mustard and pastrami. He thought the ratio of these three items was sublime. My oldest also had a Philly cheesesteak and half a grilled cheese. He said it was all he could ask for in a Philly cheesesteak. He really liked the homemade roll it came on. Obviously it is key it is a deli AND a bakery! On the grilled cheese, he thought it was pretty good, but not as good as the cheesesteak. My wife had a ham sandwich about which she said it was "sweet and salty with a hint of spice." She said it was good and that the service was very good. I had the tuna sandwich on squaw bread. The sandwich was quite good and the bread was fantastic. It was a dark bread and it made the sandwich. So all six of us give A & R Bakery & Deli a big thumbs up! Unique eatery with a wholesome atmosphere! We dined there twice over a 4-day period (driving each direction), and we were pleased each time. The menu is simple, and the food is fresh. The restroom was spotless, as was the dining room. Very "quaint" and "authentic." The pride of ownership and commitment to service was apparent. After sandwiches, it was time for dessert. Too good to turn away. Yum! In a town not known for a consistently good (or novel) place to eat, A & R Bakery is a refreshing find. The locals who dine there are pleasant to be around, as well. We've made the drive from AZ to CA and back a decent number of times but never really thought to stop along the way - just didn't seem like there'd be anything worth stopping for. We stopped by A&R this time based on the reviews as we thought we should get a snack before a late arrival in LA and were pleasantly surprised with what we got. It looked closed from the outside and when we stepped in from the back entrance we weren't sure if we were in the right place. The inside is pretty barebones and it was empty when we got there, but a few other groups trickled in after us. Ordered a BLT with avocado to split and then my wife wanted a bran muffin based on the reviews, which quickly turned to two after some light assurances from the cashier that we would probably want an extra. The BLT was average, bacon appeared to be precooked but there was an ample amount on the sandwich and it was nice and crispy. Probably not something we'd order again, but it did the job that day nonetheless. The bran muffin was really good and we were pretty happy that the cashier led us in the direction of getting two of them. They're flipped upside down as the bottom contains all the good stuff - and there's a lot of it. There's a slightly sticky syrup that keeps them attached to the muffin, and the nuts are abundant, surprising considering how cheap the muffins were. The actual muffin was moist and flavorful, and the top (in this case, the bottom) had a nice crispy edge to it. Definitely going to make it a point to stop here and grab at least a couple muffins as a reward for making it halfway through the trip in the future. read more
