I hired Bridgetown Chimney last August after years of contemplating addressing my chimney issues. I have a house built in 1945 and the mortar had crumbled away from the roofline up. It was so bad that I had a fern growing in a crack (I'll miss those birds that came to visit it outside my 2nd story window - ha ha)! The backstory is that I had met with another company a few years ago who miss led me a bit. They first told me that I didn't need to have my chimney rebuilt and that I shouldn't let anyone tell me so and then they came back and said I did after blowing me off. So, this has been a painfully long process for me. In July of 2024 I got at least four new bids. They ranged from just doing tuck and point, to re-using the same old bricks, to a VERY expensive (like double) the bid. All but one agreed that it needed to be rebuilt from the roofline up and the one that didn't was a guy driving around looking for work. I threw out the lowest and highest and went with David at Bridgetown because he was very responsive and communicative, his price was reasonable, he gave me a start day and explained all of my options. The work had to be delayed a few weeks due to scheduling with the power company to come out and move power lines twice, but his communication was clear and honest. The job started as planned and the three guys who did the work (including a father son team) were very hardworking and joyful to have around - they sang as they worked. The fifth guy I met to install the damper was equally as nice to work with, on time and explained everything to me. I 100% recommend them and would use them again. I live in a Ken Birkmeier home and my chimney was leaning badly. It also had trouble drawing and we had struggled with it for years. I was worried about keeping the integrity of the brick/matching the look of the house since the brick shapes have changed since 1937. When they came out to do the bid, the person was very respectful and listened to what we wanted. We specified that we simply wanted the chimney rebuilt from the roofline up in order to prevent further moisture from getting into the house. They were able to accommodate and we're understanding of how we would like to put in a gas fireplace and forgo making our fireplace into a wood burning one again (we need WAY too much work done to make it wood burning). I'm a professional builder and I've made an appointment with Bridgetown Chimney to install a fireplace chimney. I planned to use their services for multiple houses I'm building. The appointment was made more than three weeks before the scheduled installation date. They arrived late and they didn't have all parts with them so they told me an additional appointment will be necessary to finish the job. That would throw all my schedules out the window. I was not happy and asked for the owner to call me back to discuss. The owner called me back, was extremely arrogant and rude to the point that he actually called me mother-r. At this point all business relationships were obviously severed and the case was passed to our attorney to rectify damages due to missed scheduling and subsequently revenue. This owner is unprofessional and not very smart and I wouldn't recommend wasting time trying to get him to do any job. read more

There was a liner in the chimney, your guy just lied about it. We had a professional that explained there is a liner and that he laughed at the fact that somebody would call that chimney stage 3. This is a guy that's been doing this for over 20 years, not a junky off the street like the person deployed to our home. He said he would be happy to talk to you guys about your findings too. Don't make excuses for your guy that tries to scam people, just fire the guy and save some face. The realtor was also shocked after having an actual professional educate her. He showed photos of what stage 3 looks like and compared that to the actual chimney creosote. P.S. I'm not in your system, I didn't call you the realtor did. The house was built in 1967 and it does have a liner, it also didn't have level 3 creosote. Having kids and a family never prevented anybody from being a crook. After months of trying to live with the work that was done I have to say that I'm extremely disappointed in the craftsmanship I received. I could only do half of the $5k repairs that they suggested and this flashing work is a bummer. I'm a sheet metal worker and I take extreme pride in everything I do and the guy that did this flashing doesn't feel the same. I should have said something when it was new but I didn't. We thought we also needed rain caps put on, which our home inspector recommended, but since my husband has asthma we never planned to use the fireplace. Bridgetown Chimney is definitely where you need to go for your Portland-area chimney needs. Bridgetown Chimney consists of David and his small staff of quality masons. They do high quality work, are the best price in town, and are a pleasure to work with. Backstory: I bought a house in NE with a 70 year old chimney that was falling apart. Portland Chimney quoted me $2700 to do a complete rebuild of the chimney. I called David and he said we only need to do a tuck-point (grind out the old mortar and replace it with new). A 3rd bid also recommended a tuck point but at a higher price. Most of the reviews here for Bridgetown were short and not entirely helpful, but I trusted my instincts and went with David to do the repair. For $1400, I was able to completely redo the outer chimney, put a cap on it (there was none there before), put in a new damper (cause rain had rusted the old one), he fixed some cracks in the firebox, and gave it a nice acid wash to protect and clean. The damper had not arrived when they fixed the chimney, but he was very flexible and came the same day it arrived to install and finish the project. These are great guys to work with and will recommend them to anyone needing chimney cleaning or repair work. He made sure I understood how the damper worked and how it was installed. If he doesn't return your phone calls immediately, it's probably because he's up to his elbows in soot and will get to you when he can. They are definitely trustworthy and I hope all my future home repairs will go as smooth. read more

The crew showed up on time and in about half a day: they removed the old chimney, rebuilt the new chimney, removed an outdated fireplace insert, and repointed some damaged mortar inside. The new chimney looks awesome, is built to last, and they took the time to reinstall the flashing beautifully on our unique metal roof. I am in the process of buying my very first home and with the market being in favor of the seller that pretty much leaves the buyer to do almost any repair on the house if they don't want to risk losing it to a higher bid. I knew that when I found the very perfect home and my home inspector noted that I was going to have to look further in to the fireplace because it was inoperable, I needed to do my best to keep costs down and find someone who was going to get the job done right the first time so that I wouldn't have to deal with fireplace issues again down the road. First I searched for Groupon deals and while the price looked nice ($150 for a cleaning and inspection on Groupon), I would go research the companies reviews and quickly steer the other direction. David returned my call same day and came the following day to assess the chimney and provide a bid which was not only the best price, but was the most comprehensive. David explained everything in detail, in terms that I could understand. He and his team were super busy but since I was under some time pressure to get the job completed, David promised to call me if a job finished early to move me up on the schedule. I hired them because we were having water leaking into a room around the chimney, which was in poor condition. David diagnosed the problem right away and said he would have to grind out the mortar and repoint it, and install new flashing. It looked like a huge job, but his bid was reasonable so I said ok. They showed up just when they said they would and got to work. I peeked out the window a few times and they were meticulous. It was awful, dirty work but they never skimped. The job required a second visit (after the mortar had dried) to do the "acid wash" and seal it, along with the flashing. It couldn't look better. Hats off to Bridgetown for excellent work. We bought our home 2 years ago. Every time we tried a fire, smoke came billowing out. The home inspector, and 7 different chimney sweep/masonry companies couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.
