We are so happy with the work and customer service provided by Shawn and everyone at American Chimney. We called them in after another local chimney company cancelled/failed to show up unprepared for three appointments. American Chimney was great not just by comparison but because they provided outstanding customer service and repairs on our 100+ year old chimney. Office management was organized and professional. All appointments happened as scheduled, were preceded with reminders, and followed-up with email check-ins or phone calls. Shawn took the time to sit down with me and explain all of my options. I had a lot of questions, and he answered them all. My family was committed to restoring our wood-burning fireplace, which had begun to crumble (pieces of brick and mortar were literally falling down the chimney). The chimney was also not properly drawing smoke. Shawn provided a thorough inspection and explained that our chimney failed inspection on multiple points. Necessary repairs would be costly, and he recommended a gas insert, which would be half the price of the repairs. Ultimately, we decided to pursue the wood-burning restoration, and Shawn helped us find the most affordable options. Though we were quick to add on a few accessories, including a fan (for increased smoke draw) and a smoke guard, he advised us to wait to see if these would be necessary. (There was no pressure to purchase unnecessary items). After letting the repairs cure for over a month, we built our first fire a few days ago and were thrilled to see the smoke draw up the chimney. The work looks great, and with the masonry restoration, the chimney emits more heat than before. It had been a few years since I had my chimney swept and I wanted someone that was CSIA certified. I researched a number of different companies I found on the CSIA website and ended up going with American after looking at their CCB record, reviews, and reading about their values. Dan came for the sweep and level 1 inspection. He was respectful, friendly, and explained every part of the process. After doing the inspection he put together a full report and explained each part of that to me. We don't use the fireplace heavily, but I had read you should have it done every couple years, so thought I was overdue. It turns out I didn't quite need a sweep yet. Based on my usage, he recommended I wait a couple of years to have them come out and sweep it. I appreciated the honesty and the information. It certainly gives me a better idea of the interval between sweeps. A couple hours after Dan came, I got a follow up call from the office to check and make sure everything went well and make sure I didn't have any concerns or other questions. I've had American Chimney out to do a few jobs for me and couldn't be happier with their work, their workers and their customer service. The first job was done back in 2013 when they installed a wood burning insert for my open fireplace. The job was a lot trickier than normal due to the shape of my chimney. The crew stayed ALL day and into the early evening (asking me if that was okay) to finish. They never complained or grumbled once about how much extra work it was to get the insert to be compatible with my chimney shape, and stayed to do the clean up and make sure everything was tip top. I LOVE using it insert now! It's so much more efficient and really puts out the heat. They've cleaned my chimney over the years and recommended a rebuild a few years back. I just had them complete the rebuild and the crew, Mack and Wyatt, were SO nice and cheery the whole time. They did an excellent job and I swear had smiles on their faces the whole two days. As another reviewer recently noted, they do charge a hefty initial fee to come out to look at the possible problems. When I received the actual bid, it was quite high. When I spoke about the bid with AC& M, I got the hard sell. They said, "Well, just remember ... there's going to be mold growing due to the leak, which will cost you more ... " As if I was going to ignore the problem and just let the leak continue? Totally unnecessary thing to say. I just wanted a reasonable bid. I'm an ethical landlord who keeps the rent low for the tenant. AC&M said they "understood", but ... from the way the conversation went, I wasn't so sure. We had an amazing experience with American Chimney. Jesus Morales was the technician who supported our residence (strongly recommend him specifically!), and he was incredibly professional and kind. We are extremely grateful to him for his report, and relieved that we didn't try to make a fire in our chimney before their analysis. Jesus thoroughly inspected the chimney from all access points, including sending a camera up the inside of the chimney. He was expert and honest in his report, which revealed that unfortunately that there was too much damage to the chimney for us to use it without serious risk of causing fire in our house. He provided a few suggestions for paths forward, and estimates for approximately what those paths might cost us. This is a review where work was not done. I had American Chimney & Masonry out on November 1, 2017 to look over my chimney and fireplace because I wanted to make sure everything was up to snuff. First of all, they charged me $142.45 for an inspection. I've had two other companies do the same inspection for free. The representative from American Chimney took a lot more time and a lot more pictures to give me the same information the other companies did. Secondly, American Chimney submitted a bid of over $4,300 to replace and rebuild the top 12 rows of bricks from the chimney, tuck point the rest of the chimney, do additional masonry work (crown wash and flue tile), replace the counter flashing, apply water repellent, put up scaffolding (to do the upper chimney work), and repair a couple of cracks in the back of the fireplace. Their bid did not include sweeping the chimney. I had two other highly rated companies come out to look at the same chimney. They both said there was no need to rebuild the chimney and that what I needed, for maintenance and safety reasons, was to tuck point the entire chimney, power wash and apply water repellent, and sweep the chimney. That's it. No rebuilding, no additional masonry work, no work on the counter flashing, no need for scaffolding, and the cracks in the back of the fireplace were not significant and represented no hazard. To get my chimney to a safe place, with a ten-year warranty on the work, I'm going to spend less than $900, a far cry from American Chimney & Maintenance's $4,300. As earnest as the representative from American Chimney was, I have to admit I'm concerned that they were trying to oversell me. Needless to say, I did not accept the proposal from American Chimney. I have used this company in the past, for sweeping and to put a cap on the chimney, and their work has been quite good. But their prices are also quite high. It's a large company that carries a lot of overhead. Price-wise, it's not going to be able to compete with a smaller, local company. Their work can be fine (one of the other bidders confirmed that they do good work), but their price will be high. I will use other companies in the future. read more

If I could give ten stars I would. Pre-Covid, we had American Chimney and Masonry out to inspect masonry at the top of our chimney. This led to the discovery that the entire flue was damaged, and the fireplace was unsafe to use. The technician had photos to demonstrate the damaged flue tiles. The company offered several options for repair and spent hours (I am not kidding) on the phone with me to determine the best option. Patient does not even begin to describe Shawn! Dennis and Travis just installed a brand new wood-burning insert yesterday. They wore masks, wiped down all surfaces, kept a good distance from me. The installation was not easy but they persevered throughout the day, politely answering my constant questions. American Chimney and Masonry just did a FANTASTIC job taking down a 130-year-old chimney on my Victorian office building. The building's roof is very steep, the chimney was four stories in the air, and I have tenants and neighbors who are very attentive to every bit of noise and mess that is created by any construction. The work performed by Jason and Jake of American Chimney was fast, clean, quiet...and beautiful! They not only removed the decaying chimney, but they installed a solid patch on the roof that perfectly matches the existing roofing and roof line. Adam came out to give us a quote on some mortar work we needed for our chimney. The quote appeared to be pretty thorough, showing what the problems were and what needed to be fixed. The reason I am giving one star is because the quote he gave us was *twice* the amount quoted by Russell Chimney and *three times* the amount quoted by Oregon Chimney. The work descriptions in the quotes are exactly the same. Looking at the three detailed quote descriptions side by side, I am unable to discern why American's quote is so much higher. We did not proceed with using American Chimney for this reason. I can't comment on the quality of their work, therefore. I would only caution people that are considering working with them to obtain additional quotes from other reputable companies and asking about the details of the work promised before proceeding. read more

I had a very difficult repair to make to the flu in my chimney. Two other businesses looked at the repair and could not come up with a fix. I contacted Steve and he came our right away, looked at the problem, researched it and got back to me with a solution. The team showed up and made the fix and my wood-fired pizza oven is back up and running! While here, the repair people were extremely curteous and very careful to lay down tarps to not make a mess. We have had a firebox that needed a small repair due to damage that was done by previous owners of our house, we had 4 different masonry/chimney companies come to look at the job. Although the bids we received were fair and we were very willing to pay for the work, two of the companies completely blew us off, never following up or returning our calls and emails!They were unprofessional and left us high and dry! We were then referred to American chimney and masonry who's prompt communication and follow up finished the job beautifully just yesterday. Dennis was very polite, professional and courteous. Dennis worked through our whole home remodel juggling time with other contractors to retrofit a lower floor Swedish wood fireplace into a gas insert fireplace and get the main floor Swedish wood fireplace functional again including ducting a curving flue and installing a log lighter. Subsequently he returned to trouble shoot a smokeless wood burning smell in the living room. Through an investigative process we discovered that the remodel resulted in a near airtight house. He then came up with several workable solutions to this inadequate cold air intake for the fireplace--all done as a courtesy call! I called American Chimney because the chimney was leaking. The guy came out with no ladder. They charge 149.95 to look at it and give a bid. He said 3 to 4 thousand. I ask for a written bid but never got one. I called the office but never saw one. They kept my money. These guys are rip offs. Who comes to your house to bid on a leaking chimney without a ladder.
