After moving to our home (new to us but built in 1978) we learned from a chimney sweep that our fireplace was not only incorrectly converted to gas but was constructed in such a way that it would have never worked correctly as a wood burning fireplace. Which is probably why the original owners attempted to convert it to gas. We wanted wood, not gas, and we wanted to get the 26% federal income tax credit. So we visited A Fireplace Store and More and spoke to the woman working there. She set up a date for Rony to come out and give us an estimate. Rony showed up on time and we settled on a modern high efficiency biomass fireplace insert that qualifies for the credit. Parts and labor was not cheap, but we wanted a quality appliance and this business has decades of experience, which we also wanted. We put down a deposit and set the installation day, which was today. Rony and his team showed up on time, worked quickly, did good quality work and cleaned up afterwards. After calling several companies in the area, Hudson was one the only one willing to do the job on a holiday AND without it being logs from his company. I initially contacted Hudson about 1 1/2 year ago because of the positive reviews I read on line, but that was a big mistake. He turned out to be a con artist who ripped me off. I went to him for two reasons: (1) our old Majestic direct vent fireplace was not working; (2) the glass doors and gas log set on our wood burning fireplace were old and worn looking. (1) I'll address the Majestic fireplace first. Hudson found that the gas valve and the pilot assembly needed to be replaced. He made a big deal out of how difficult this job was. After this service, the fireplace was working fine until last week when the fire and the pilot suddenly went out while a fire was burning. I intended to try to relight the pilot but found that the gas valve that Hudson charged me $500 for (in addition to his labor) was missing an ignitor button. Similar gas valves are readily available on the internet for under $250. How stupid was I? Not only did he charge me double the price for the valve, but he cheated me out of the ignitor that was supposed to be attached to the valve, apparently not caring that I would have had to remove the sealed door and light the pilot with a match. I called and left Hudson a detailed message as to what happened, but he never even returned my call requesting service. Hmm. Ya think maybe he knew I was suddenly wise to how he cheated me? So I called Chicago Gas Fireplace Company and a highly competent and professional service man named John came out promptly and took care of the problem for a very reasonable fee. He fixed the problem and also installed the missing ignitor button for $15. He laughed when I told him how Hudson complained about how hard the job was. It also turns out that Hudson skimped on the embers. The fire looks so much better now after John did the job right. I highly recommend Chicago Gas Fireplace Co. (2) We purchased a new gas log set and new glass doors from Hudson for our wood burning fireplace. They were pretty expensive and I suspect we were overcharged for those too. As part of the purchase, Hudson did the installation (for an additional fee, of course) which included supposedly providing all new lava rock, new embers and painting the firebrick black. He charged us $50 for the high heat paint (which you can buy at Home Depot for one-third that price) and to top that off I watched him use about one ounce of the paint out of an existing can to do the job. The lava rock he provided did not even cover the floor around the gas log set, so I purchased 10 pounds of lava rock on line and it needed every bit of that. When it came to skimping, Hudson didn't miss a beat. I feel like the world's biggest sucker, but Hudson got away with this only because we were in the middle of a major house renovation and I was distracted by multiple items at that time. Don't be as stupid as I was and go somewhere else for your fireplace needs. The minute you start talking to this guy you will probably see exactly what I am warning you about. I don't know how he could have gotten all those 5 star reviews. I guess it's true that stupidity has no limits. read more

Going on the recommendation of past Yelp reviewers, I hired Hudson to come out and repair my 1970s vintage, conical, gas-log fireplace. I knew I was taking a chance because, since we hadn't operated it in over 20 YEARS, I wasn't sure if he knew how to fix such "antiques." We had a pretty steady stream of children / grandchildren who played in the room, so we just kept it off rather than expose them to accidental burns from its metal housing. Luckily, Hudson knew EXACTLY how to fix it. He was professional and very polite--despite our exposing him to 20 years of dusty lava rock (many, many apologies!). In addition, he instructed us all on how to operate it safely, and replaced the rock with blue fire glass. It looks fabulous now!! Plus, his prices are very reasonable. Even more recently, I recommended Hudson to my sister to have him perform maintenance on the combo wood/gas fireplace in her home. She will not be disappointed. read more

What a great experience. We have had our ventless fireplace for years and it has always been temperamental. When we have technicians in, they generally spend most of the appointment telling us that we are not using it properly or not using it enough or whatever, which of course we're not because it doesn't work properly. So it's been frustrating, and we generally leave it sitting cold and unused -- which is too bad. Based solely on yelp's recommendations, we called Hudson. At first I was a little worried, because he seemed distracted when we called. It took a few calls to set things up, but he managed to come at night when we were both here. He spent more than an hour getting the fireplace to work better than it ever has since it was installed, and he explained the problems that we are having, why they were occurring and what we could do to diminish them, if not get rid of them entirely. We appreciated his candor and his professionalism, and we are now thinking of asking him to install an upgraded unit that will solve some of these problems. Thanks to Hudson and his skill and knowledge it's a lot warmer around here! After a bumpy start due to Hudson's emergency health issues last week, we are happy and warm. I was pleased with Hudson's approach to our problem with the 10 year old no-vent gas fireplace: he cleaned it first - hella dusty! - before even addressing the issue of it not working. He stated, that it needed to be done anyway. He showed me how to do it, what to beware of and told me that if I did it once a year, I may not need to call him again. (We did not install it so I was clueless about maintenance). Here is what I learnt: The igniter box is a "builder's special" so a little cheaper and less hardy than what he would have wanted. The blower was an after market add-on and that is why it was a bit noisy. It helps spread the heat into the room. The logs are fiber rather than ceramic so create a bit of an odor. This gas fireplace costs about 16c an hour to run. We will be using it a lot more - already happening - now that we understand its efficiency and are enjoying the wallop of heat that it puts out into our kitchen. Ironically it's this "new" 10+-year old addition to our 103 year old house which is the coldest ... did someone forget insulation maybe? Bottom line: it was all about maintenance. Wet rags, vacuuming, using a paintbrush to clean out what must have been over 3 years of dust. Hudson saved us from ripping the whole thing out, and now he has educated me about how to keep this heat a-comin'. Bonus: what a lovely human being! :) read more
