Earlier this year, I scheduled an appointment with Top Hat to look at our two gas fireplaces. Anthony didn't arrive by the appointed time, so I called him, and he told me that he was having trouble with his truck and would have to reschedule. When Anthony came for the rescheduled appointment, he told us that we needed to replace our system in our upstairs gas fireplace. We agreed to do that at the quoted price. He then told us that there were gaps between the interior front bricks in the firebox in both our fireplaces and that he would fill them. The new logs and system looked nice, and he explained how it worked, and he fixed an issue with our damper. However, his charge for filling the gaps between the bricks (which he had not quoted prior to doing the work) was high considering the amount of time he spent on that part of the job and the quality of the work. To fill the gaps, he put some material across the entire face of the bricks. After he left, I checked the job and saw that in one of our fireplaces, some of this material had ended up on the damper handle and some had fallen into the firebox. In addition, large pieces of the stuff he had put on the interior bricks started to peel off in both fireboxes about 6 months later and was falling into the fireboxes. I sent Top Hat pictures of the peeling material when I first noticed it but haven't heard back from them. I needed some additional work done on the fireplaces and talked to two other fireplace/chimney companies. Both commented that the stuff was peeling off because some of it had been put on the metal part of the fireboxes below the bricks where it should not have been; in addition, both noted that Anthony had not covered a large hole in the corner of one of the fireboxes. I ended up hiring another company that took off the material that Anthony had put on the interior front bricks. This second company told me that once they had removed this material, they saw that the gaps in the mortar had not been filled. This second company ended up filling the gaps between the bricks as well as the gap that was still present after Anthony was done. read more
