Stay as far away from this company if you can - they will try to fleece you for some wild sums of money if given the opportunity I called to have two gas fireplaces inspected just to make sure the top of the chimney wasn't blocked, not too much old buildup, etc. The main goal of my call though was to actually get the main fireplace working and measure/install for a log set. The guy who came here accomplished neither of those two things and then told me I needed just under $20k in repairs to "get up to code." This is my first time owning a home so I'm fortunate I had others to run this by, and a recommendation for a local company to come give a second opinion. The other company's second opinion said I needed to spend roughly $100 to fix a tile and he felt so bad for how this company try to con me, he didn't even charge, because there was almost nothing wrong. I had contacted Chicago Fireplace due to water was trickling down my fireplace. Rey (Reynaldo) came out, from the minute I met Rey I felt comfortable. Rey was honest and cared about his work which is what I look for in regards to a first impression. Rey took his time, the issue did not show itself at first when Rey conducted the water test, it took quite some time but Rey kept at it and finally the problem did show itself. Rey then provided a quote and resolved the issue. I never have left a comment concerning any company but I felt compelled to do so because I was so impressed with Rey. We had this company replace our chimney liner 6 years ago. Ever since then, we've experienced major smoke problems. It forced us to not even have fires the last couple of years. We finally just today had another company come out to do a thorough inspection (not just cleaning like we did the previous years) and their review was not good. Not only was the liner apparently far too small, but he also described the job as being only half done. There were a lot of things that just weren't done. And worst of all, apparently something with the smoke chamber wasn't done to code (a code that has been in place for over 20 years) risking safety. I think it was something like it wasn't sealed with refractory mortar. Long story short, this company did a complete botched job that will cost us thousands to fix with a competent company. "Serviced Wrong Chimney, Owner Became Arrogant & Defensive." We had contracted Chicagoland Fireplace to add a crown & cap to our back chimney. Their reviews seemed genuine and we wanted the job done right. The cost quote from their man Nick was rather high considering we had this type of work done in Michigan a few years before for about a 1/4 of the price. But Nick explained that due to the location in the back of the house (which is slanted) a special scaffolding would have to be erected and cement would need to be poured at top inside a form to create the crown. A complex situation indeed. To this we agreed. We paid half of the total amount due ($1,089.50) and waited. Nobody contacted us for over two weeks so we called to touch base. We were told the mason worked on his own schedule and would arrive when he was available, usually several (4-6) weeks out. The repair day came suddenly while we were out of town and the crew in error built a scaffold around the wrong chimney in front of the house and serviced it instead. We discovered this error upon returning home later that day and called the company immediately (left a message). When the crew returned the next day to remove the scaffolding we pointed out the mistake and asked if they got our message from their office (they did not). After more calls back and forth they said they'd return the next day (on a Sunday now) to do the proper job as originally estimated. But instead of building the scaffolding in back as spelled out in the work order they merely used the still-standing front house scaffolding from the wrong chimney and WALKED OVER THE LENGTH OF THE ROOF with a pre-cast (not poured) crown and bucket of cement. It took them less than one hour to complete this work to the correct chimney, at a price of over $2,000. Our roofer later noted a few tiles were indeed damaged in the area they used as a pathway. Having just purchased the house we have have a recent inspection report noting the roof was in good condition previous to Chicagoland's work. Back to the phone we went, calling Chicagoland Fireplace with more messages of concern they did not return. Ultimately our perseverance in calling them paid off and we finally got through to a man named Vince, who instead of listening to our concerns kept arrogantly talking over us and mentioning we got a free "bonus" chimney crown on the front of the house (which replaced a perfectly good crown that was already there according to a previous inspection by another company and Nick's OWN initial assessment) and that we should feel GRATEFUL for this. Now, it is always difficult to discuss, reason or otherwise "talk" to someone whose sole objective is seemingly to deflect a serious issue at hand and not let the other party have their say, much like a playground spat with a grade school bully that never resolves according to Robert's Rules of Order. Nonetheless when we tried to point out our concerns and why we were upset (the unauthorized walking over the length of the roof, no back scaffolding as agreed, no poured crown, no communication, etc.) Vince kept talking over us, getting louder and louder in tone and attitude...at which point I could only interject "would you like me to bring this up in a small claims court?" Vince jocularly replied "Go ahead...you'll lose". His exact words. You can't win an argument on the playground... So let's cut to the final resolution: no court was convened, Vince came down in price (slightly) and agreed to not darken our doorstep ever again, leaving the cheaper back chimney crown in place. No apologies were offered, little professionalism was displayed (apart from the professional "looking" truck they drove). And the very easy conclusion we can draw from this debacle is not, with any moral conscience, to ever recommend Chicagoland Fireplace and Chimney Restoration to anyone. There are dozens of better qualified, more courteous contractors out there in Chicagoland that certainly would welcome a chance to prove their craftsmanship and communication skills. Called to set up an appointment with Chicago Fireplace and Chimney Restoration, waited 10 days to get someone to come out to look at our broken built-in fireplace. Initial tech took a look at it but indicated they had an electrician specialist who should come out to see the job. Called the office to schedule and he came the following week. Thank goodness- Johnny their next tech was super nice and very educated about our system and within a short time I had a roaring fireplace again! I called the company because I purchased a house in Markham with a huge crack in the fireplace glass. Robert and another guy came out, took off their shoes and proceeded to inspect and clean the fireplace. They got it started and informed me that a switch was needed and they would look and see if another door can be found because the unit was 20 years old. I was happy to find someone because every other company I called just told me there was nothing that they could do other than replace the entire unit. The problem, I have never heard from then since. I called and Robert answered the phone once and told me his Boss normally takes a week to do the research and he would call me back. We are now approaching a month and none has called. There were hundreds of fire places to choose from and he got me to narrow it down to one that fit my budget. A few weeks later after making the final decision I contacted their office to get the job scheduled. I was informed from the beginning that it was Fireplace busy season and The process would take a little bit longer than if I were to plan this during summer months! (My fault for snoozing but great advice for someone who is looking for work done fast! CALL IN SUMMER! ) I was still pleased with the upfront honesty of the company. To make a long story short we got the job done and I am very happy with the fireplace we chose. It is very efficient it heats up the room well, sometimes even too much. We have been really disappointed with our experience with Chicagoland Fireplace and Chimney Restoration. I reached out to them to inspect our wood burning fireplace and help us transition it into a gas fireplace. Our new condo already had the gas line run to the fireplace, but we needed a log set and burner, and wanted to confirm that everything was in working order. Scheduling the inspection appointment was easy, but everything went downhill from there. The tech arrived on time and took a very quick look inside the fireplace. He answered all of our questions about our fireplace. He offered to look at the top of the chimney up on the roof, but another owner in our building had just had it looked at. The tech then showed us a couple of log sets, gave us a flyer with photos, and said to reach out to the office with the set we wanted and to ask about their current stock. After our appointment he emailed a very basic estimate. So that evening we looked up the log sets from their recommended brand and sent an email to the office with the one we liked, asking for more detailed pricing and availability. Two days passed and we didn't hear anything, so I called. Jenny wrote down my information and said she'd email the manager with my questions. She also told me it typically takes 3-6 weeks for the logs to come in, and another week or so for the install. This was longer than we'd hoped, so I wanted to get this process rolling. Two more days passed, and I still hadn't heard from anyone. I called again and Jenny said she would take my information again and have the manager call me when he got in. Five more days passed and I called again. This was my last attempt. Jenny gave me the manager's cell phone number. I called him, and his voicemail was full. I was getting really frustrated. Vince (the manager) finally called me back and said that our chosen set was discontinued, and that our original tech should have called us back to tell us that. He also said that we could only choose from a limited amount of log sets called the "builders series" with the base price we were quoted, and that all other log sets would be double the price. Nowhere on our estimate did it mention anything about the "builders series." The entire purpose for trying to get this project taken care of in early September was to beat the cold weather rush, and now we've lost two weeks in the process. Between the lack of communication, their disorganization, and their pricing inconsistencies, we've decided to move on. I really wish we'd had a better experience. read more

Nick's crew tuck-pointed a large areas on an outside wall of a 100-year-old four story walk-up. Visually the work is stunning - you can't tell anything has been done in a hundred years! Technically, my "peeps" say Chicagoland Fireplace & Chimney did a quality job which should withstand decades of weather. Bonus: the property's at a university that has nightmarish policies and procedures. I received kudos from campus staff for Chicagoland's efficient scaffolding set-up and tear-down, keeping and leaving the site clean and behaving professionally on a high-traffic campus. I couldn't believe it. Their cost was neither highest nor lowest but Nick explained carefully the problems, options for fixing, price differences and gave a realistic idea of how long the work would take and when it could be done. He discussed areas that will need work in a few years but didn't try to hard-sell me. He made suggestions that other companies didn't address. Plus Nick answered a *lot* of questions patiently and clearly. The employees that come to your home are great but the mgmt is terrible! They are supposed to call before coming to your home and continuously did not do that. Worth every single penny. We had another company out this summer and they recommended so much work and we were overwhelmed. We ask them to break down for us what we should do now versus what we could wait on and they just weren't able to communicate well. So when we called Chicagoland Fireplace I made my goals clear. We had John out and I really appreciated his ability to say "here's what you absolutely need to do right now and here's what you should think about in 3-5 years." We ended up having our firebox entirely replaced and we had the masons out within 4 days of our estimate. The masons were amazing and had the entire thing demo'd and rebuilt in one day. Then John came back out to set up the damper. Every time we coordinated with CFCR they were easy to talk to and their recommendations made sense. We hired Chicagoland Fireplace and Chimney Restoration to remove the chimney and fireplace in our home. We did not use it since it was in an odd spot in our home (inside opened to a eating area, outside took up 2' of room on our already-narrow driveway). Not a typical project, but they were up to the task. We first met Nick, who was very communicative and honest about his companies ability to do the project during the quoting project. We changed the scope of work slightly from the original quote and had a new quote back within hours. Throughout the scheduling process and with any questions that came up, Nicole was super helpful and responsive via email. The crew came on time and finished the project as planned. The quality of work to remove the chimney was great and they closed up the opening left by the fireplace very securely before we could take the project from there (we decided to do the siding repair that was left by the now-gone chimney ourselves). It ended up raining for a few days after the removal, before we could start on our part of the project and we had no issues with weather creeping inside the house. I never write on Yelp, but my experience with this company was exceptionally bad. They pressured me to do work I did not want to do, did not tell me the price, charged me $1200 dollars for the work that should have cost only $600, insisted that I pay them that day before they leave, and half of which did not need to be done at our house at all. Here's the story: they came out to give a quote for some work, and instead went ahead and performed part of the work that day. They did not let me see the parts they were installing, did not give me the price ahead of time, and when I asked questions about whether I really needed those parts given the other work we were doing, they insisted that yes, we did. It of course turns out that we did not (a little research afterwards and talking with other professionals told me this)! They insisted I pay them before they left that day, and when I called to complain, they claimed that they had reviewed my initial call with the company and it could have "gone either way" whether I had asked for a quote or for them to do part of the work that day. I since had another company come out, and they said the parts they installed were the cheapest parts available and would not be efficient. This in retrospect was a clear swindle, taking advantage of a homeowner. I am so sorry that there are companies like this in the world. read more

I had been in touch with the company via yelp messenger and everything seemed easily scheduled. I thought it was odd that I didn't get a confirmation call but figured they would be here between the 8-12 time frame they quoted. At 11am I called and they didn't have me on the schedule! Jennifer found our correspondence and wasn't sure how it didn't get put on the schedule. She seemed matter of fact and not super apologetic. I was frustrated bc I am moving and had all the cleanings and inspections lined up for a reason. But, then I got over it bc what can you do. Thankfully they were able to get a guy to come out around 3pm which worked out great! The second woman I spoke to was much more friendly and apologetic and thanked me for understanding. Christian and Christian came out and did the inspection and cleaning. They brought boot covers and put them on as they entered my home. They were very friendly and answered all my questions. They cleaned everything out quickly and did not leave a mess at all and the fireplace is on the 3rd floor in the carpeted master bedroom! Super clean! It only took about 45min. I paid with a credit card and note the company will charge you the 3% credit card fee. Aside from the initial scheduling goof up (one star deducted for that) everything was great! I have owned a vintage home for over 30 years, build fires several nights a week from October through March every year, and had never known I should have been checking at reasonable intervals whether or not my fireplace and chimney lining was safe. As friends in town began to speak of the exorbitant costs they had been quoted when they had hired cleaning and camera inspections of their fireplaces, a couple said they had opted to just put pillar candles in their fireplace boxes rather than pay for new liners and repairs. Last summer, 2013, I had intended to finally get going to see what my fireplace needed, but had to delay till this year due to other projects. I called three vendors, all of whom had inserts in coupon packet delivered to my home. At all three locations I was given courtesy and reasonable descriptions of what I may have to do, starting with basic cleaning and camera inspection. But Chicagoland Fireplace had a young woman named Nicole who turned my choice in their direction. Nicole was clearly young-sounding, I guessed in her twenties, and yet was very knowledgable, patient, and specific. I knew all likely estimates could only be somewhat correct till the work was well underway, and told her that if the repairs were going to be too expensive once the inspection was complete, I would have to perhaps split the work into two seasons. Nicole and I agreed on a date for Nick and Vince to come out to do a cursory first assessment. They were great guys, and they saw quickly that my outdoor chimney brick and cement top were in very bad shape, and at the very least we agreed that had to be done right away. Certain details of the actual "grout" in the firebox walls and floor were also in need of help, but until the routine cleaning and camera happened, that was all we could be sure of. Quickly Nicole arranged for the second team to come out. Two different young men, I believe John and Daniel, did that part and found that indeed I had a very shaky situation, very unsafe after all the years I had lived in the house ( 1923 structure). I told them I would agree to a new liner perhaps in the next year, and we proceeded to book the masons for all the exterior work. Then, after a phone call to Nick, John told me they had agreed on a good price for my new liner, installed, with the entire bottom line for the process of the full clean out, and repairs of the grout and floor of the firebox. It was well less than I had thought, and I decided I should just go for it. I imagined it would be a nightmarish process, but instead, the masons came out, two new guys (now I had met six total specialists, three pairs of two...)who put up scaffolding, rebuilt my chimney and cement chimney top, put in a great and new double layer animal protective cap, removed their scaffolding, cleaned up perfectly after themselves, all in two days. Amazing. Just two days later, the fourth set of two guys came out...the liner experts, and though some of this extreme cleaning required plastic and tenting the area in my living room, none of my fine art or large paintings had to be removed. One of the men had told me that they do many exquisite homes, filled with art and antiques, and have not had to remove most of the treasures in order to do their jobs. In just two days I had an entirely new cement floor in my fireplace, new cement grouting in the firebox, a new steel liner with some sort of filler to keep it tight against the brick interior of the chimney. I did have a bit of extra cost, I won't lie....my fireplace flue was shot, and the new one with a very accessible chain pull did cost $450. I was very happy to have it. And the masonry outdoors did need a bit more than first believed, but one cannot have a chimney fall apart before another brutal winter, so again, it was not a problem. Between my first conversation with Nicole, and meeting these four sets of guys who each came out and did their specialties, there was about a two week period. I have a lifetime guarantee on this liner, and have had a wonderful, efficient experience with this company. And at a reasonable price. I would recommend them to anyone who is interested in SAFE crackling fires through our cold seasons. read more

I can't comment on their actual work because they rescheduled twice with us, and we aren't going with them. The first time they rescheduled our appointment, which we made more than a month ago, it was 30 minutes before our scheduled appointment range. The second time it was an hour into the appointment range. One of us had to stay home from work to be around when they were supposed to show up, so canceling after the appointment time during the week is just highly unprofessional. I've heard great things on their service here, but good luck actually getting them to show up. read more

We hired these folks to clean and inspect our gas/wood burning fireplace and dryer vent, and troubleshoot our ventless fireplace. With the Living Social discount, it was the most affordable option I found. They were very knowledgeable, clean and professional. Our ventless fp issue was just a matter of replacing hidden batteries - they could have charged an arm and leg for that but instead took the time to show me where and how to do it myself in the future and did not charge for that. They took before and after photos of our dryer vent to show their work. We will be using them again for sure - highly recommended and could not be happier! read more

We bought an apartment carved from what was a luxury building when it went up in 1910. Our inspector advised us not to use the gas fireplace in the living room until we had professionals take a look at it and clean it. We finally got around to it as the last item in a long and difficult renovation. Danny from Chicago Fireplace and Chimney explained to us that it was actually a coal fireplace that had been converted to gas in a manner not up to code and advised us to replace it with vent free gas logs. We followed his advice and also decided to add steel doors with mesh instead of glass. First they did a thorough cleaning and my co-owner was amazed how little mess they made. Then the gas logs went in and they're terrific. They provide a lot of heat on those days when the living room is on the chilly side. There was an initial problem with the fitting of the doors but yesterday they installed them and they fit perfectly. The entire fireplace now looks really beautiful and we're very happy with it, as well as to be done with the renovation. The total price turned out to be about a hundred dollars less than I had budgeted for the work. We'll keep on using Chicago Fireplace and Chimney for our annual maintenance. read more

I called on this place to clean our chimney in our new home we just purchased. The rep who came out was Elvis, along with another guy. It was told to me that their basic cleaning and service was $125 and included a cleaning of the chimney unit including the top of the chimney. Elvis was quite helpful in his explanation of the chimney, but stated that he didn't have time or couldn't get on the roof to inspect the top of the chimney at that time but would come back later in the week to finish the job. He asked for full payment at that time even though he hadn't finished the entire job. I obliged, although I usually don't like paying for things unless the job is done. Needless to say, he never came back to finish the work promised by this company. I have called the company 3 times now and each time they tell me they will get someone out but still haven't. I called Elvis directly but no return calls. I would be happy to change my rating if this company would come through on their promises. Until that time, my rating remains "Meh. I WAS SHOCKED TO HAVE TO PAY FOR AN INSPECTION WHEN I HAD ASKED FOR A QUOTE AND FURTHER DISAPPOINTED WHEN MY CALL WAS NEVER RETURNED AFTERWARDS. A year ago, Chicagoland Fireplace & Chimney Restoration (CF&CR) quoted to restore our fireplaces, but we had to delay getting the work done because more extensive roof work was needed first. We recently revisited this project and scheduled to have CF&CR include a quote to rebuild a firebox with their original estimate. Shockingly, they told me I owed $149 "inspection fee" for each fireplace (we have 3). They hide behind my 'passive' acceptance since they sent me a lengthy email confirming their appointment and calling it an inspection. I have remodeled and built several houses working with a multitude of contractors, and I have never been charged to get an estimate before now. Even more disappointing is that Vince, the manager, didn't offer me the courtesy of a return call to discuss further what happened. They swiped my chimney soooo well that Im on fire! Daniel was soooo helpful to me! I would recommend those guys to everyone!

Here is my follow up review.... We had fires in 2 of the relined fireplaces this past weekend, and the new liners were awesome! The draw was just as good if not better than the original draw. We were concerned that when slightly changing of the amount of space in the chimney, the draw might be a problem. We can't wait for the holidays to have them all roaring! I had a cleaning scheduled for 2 fireplaces today. 12-20. It has been scheduled for 3 week. Got a call last night to confirm with a time of 8-12. At 12:05 I call and ask when they will be here. He tries to call tech, no answer. tells me he will call me back and he should have been here since I was second customer of the day. Why give a window of 4 hours if you cant uphold it. Its 5 days before Christmas and everywhere is a 2 week out time frame. update. Over and hour late. read more
