Our gas fireplace insert is about 10-15 years old. I honesty can't remember exactly when we purchased it. A few years ago the fan, which helps blow out the heat, started making a loud noise. So we turned off the fan, but our gas fireplace still works well. So this year we decided to check into getting our fan looked at. Originally we payed $2000 plus the tax and installation for this unit. So we called the Chicago Fireplace & Chimney Co. a week later a guy called to say he was on his way. It was after 7 pm, we were surprised at how late he showed up. The guy came in, had no idea how to operate the fireplace, asked us tons of questions as in - how do you open it, how do you turn it on, where is the serial number? My husband and I thought it felt more like a training session than a service call. In the end he informed us that our fireplace insert is old, that it needed cleaning, several times he mentioned that it should be cleaned "once a year"and that he had to go back to the office to find out how to proceed. We were billed $125 to have a guy spend 10 min. In our house, to take a photo with his cell phone and leave again. He never once broke out a tool, his cell phone was his flash light. Never even brought in a tool bag. This was the biggest waster of time, and money we have ever witnessed. We received an email to inform us that the fan would cast $475 to replace, then we received a second email to tell us that this fireplace has two fans and that both will cost $750, funny part is- there is no estimate for the cleaning he so highly recommended, in either of these emails. Here are some suggestions to this company, ask your customer to give the serial number over the phone. Ask your service guy to carry a real flashlight, and a real tool bag, and have him study fireplaces, give your customer a quick cleaning, to help your customers feel less taken advantage of. We will never call this company again, and suggest others don't either.

Sean had tremendous knowledge of fireplaces and was able to describe each potential gas fireplace set up. His techs came and were also very helpful and answered anything I asked. Very clean and quick job. Extremely happy with the end result!

Just had these installed today by Chicago Fireplace and Chimney Co. Nice!

These guys are great! Sean and Steve (the installer) was great! He wasn't bothered at all by my young children watching them as they put the logs in, which sometimes happens with service people in the home. We also purchased a chase top cover from them. Reasonable pricing and quality service. I even received a phone call prior to them coming out to make sure we were there and knew about the appointment. Quality!

Matt was fantastic - professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and honest. He educated us on the maintenance needs of both fireplaces. Gave recommendations on options for our 75+ year old masonry. Did ONLY what was needed today based on how we use the units and what we were looking for. He could have "taken us" for more work or money given that we are not well-educated on fireplaces, but instead he took the time to explain what was needed (and not). He took pictures, explained work that is needed, and inspected the outside masonry of the chimneys. Will 100% call again for further refurbishment and annual maintenance/cleanings. 100% recommend Matt. Sarah - who responded to my web inquiry - was friendly, responsiveness, and flexible also. Work was scheduled in less than a week from my initial request. THANK YOU to Capital Chimney Chicago! Highest recommendation.

We got the inspection scheduled just as fast. On the day of the inspection, Chris called me to keep me updated throughout the day. The only thing I would slightly ding them for is that they arrived pretty much at the end of the appointment window. However, Chris kept me updated on his status. As promised, he sent me the photos, inspection report and the quote for suggested repairs the next morning. All around pleased with the experience! The team at Capital Chimney was quick, responsive and did the job. Recommend if you're looking for inspections!

I learned a lot of things from my Dad-- How to be fair, how to work really hard and do more than is…read moreasked of you, how to be generous: I did not learn that if you have a fireplace and use it regularly, even if you always use hardwood, you will need to have it cleaned regularly. So after twenty years of making modest hardwood fires, I started to have a cough. My sister came to visit and even being in the living room (no fire) made her cough and gave her a runny nose. Thinking, okay, I'll have my chimney cleaned, I called Chicago Chimney. Toni was nice and said that Mario was really good at his work, and it would be $150. When he came, pleasant, personable, and clearly competent, I could see that being near my fireplace was making his nose run. I told him about my sister. Might need more that just a cleaning, he said. He shone his flashlight up a short ways into the fireplace. "I call that black glass", he said. What is it? I said. My English is not so good, he said, underestimating his excellent skills. Google clarified. I found out that bubbles of "black glass" represent the third stage of a serious creosote problem-- first soot, then tar that is runny, then the glass part, beautiful and perfectly ready for a chimney fire. One thing about my dad, he prepared me to know a good person when I saw him. Mario said that he was going to have to come back with material and brushes that could dissolve the creosote. The next day, when forty or fifty pounds of mortar on the chimney lining just fell off piece by piece once the creosote was not holding it all together, he explained that another day and another step would be involved, putting a mixture of protective covering over a now very porous surface, insulation, sealant. (As it happened, he did this himself by crawling up into the tight black space and painting it on. The dilemma of having a helper who was unwilling to do it was a problem he would deal with later. He took the guy off to another job and came back. It was this part, where he was a matter of fact about doing the exceptionally nasty work, and understanding about the kid's inability to do it-- he just said "last winter I was doing this every day." I want to put a sign up in my yard for him and his professional and humane work. He charged me $900 for the cleaning part and $1100 for the resealing part. Interestingly, this is less than $150/ year for 20 years, not even counting inflation; I recommend him wholeheartedly for yearly (or every-other-year sweeping) and for the whole cleaning and sealant job if you are someone who didn't know how bad it could get. He does tuckpointing too. The warmth and charm apparently come free.

Then they told us that the guy Mario, who did the work does not work for them anymore. We ask them to send someone else to repair our chimney . They stopped taking our phone calls and would not answer our text messages. I recommend anyone needing chimney work to stay away from this company.
