When this grocery market started selling more Hmong/Lao food at the center for ready hot made food/meal and hired Lao female cashiers, "hidden fees" appeared and customer service declined. Khmer people support Khmer small businesses, but when it gets dodgy and mistakes are made, it is part of the Khmer boran culture to hold each other responsible, (unlike other cultures, Khmer boran culture believe in honesty-- do not invade, gaslight, lie, steal taxpayers' money or cover up for one's own ethnicity to take over an entire public institution, e.g. school administration). So I am glad others are also pointing out the BAG fees here on Yelp. The Khmer-Chinese female owner/cashier charged me 25 cent for a bag and didn't ask me beforehand if I wanted a bag then to cover up -- she gaslighted me when I asked for a refund for the bag. If this grocery store wants to follow the communist culture/ilk, I am taking my business to Angkor Asian Market on March Lane, where they ask me beforehand if I want a bag and don't give me an attitude problem or better yet support the down to earth and honest Khmer vendors (vs. the few who aren't) at Angel Cruz Park. read more

I had a very terrible experience at AJ Market that I feel other customers should be aware of. During checkout, the cashier charged me 10 cents for a single‑use plastic bag without informing me beforehand. What made the situation even worse is that she never gave me the bag at all. I was essentially charged for nothing. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME! This didn't feel like an honest mistake. It came across as intentional overcharging, and when I questioned it, the cashier's attitude was extremely rude and dismissive. There was no apology, no explanation. just unprofessional behavior that made the entire interaction uncomfortable. To make matters more concerning, selling single‑use plastic bags is illegal starting in 2026, so charging customers for something that shouldn't even be provided is unacceptable. I will report this violation to the California Attorney General's Office. Overall, this experience left a very negative impression. I'm tired of the same Cashier charging more than purchased. Years ago she wouldn't even give you a receipt. Though this alone will chase customers away I still go there because I want to support my Cambodian community and the rest of the team are awesome & honest so I just simply avoid going to her and chose to have someone else ring up my purchases, never had a problem with any one else. Unfortunately today I had my guard down, wasn't thinking, walked up to her station, and sure enough she rung up an extra batch of herbs I didn't have. This has to stop. The lack of integrity is disappointing. I know the staffs at AJ knows who this person is because I'm not the only customer. I don't understand why you still allow her to run the register. I experienced that they will charge (10 cents) for grocery bags regardless if asked for or not. I like to shop here as they often have asian knick knacks that meet my need. Normally other stores would make it clear and ask if we would like to buy a bag. But this place automatically charges (without asking) every time I come. My first incident I bought 2 small snack packs that can easily be carried in my hand. Since the cashier just pulled out a bag to put my items in without mentioning the charge, I assumed was free and thought nothing of it. But later when driving away I glanced at the receipt and noticed "10 cents" added. On next return, I made sure to watch during check-out. Sure enough, the cashier started pulling out a grocery bag ready to put my things in and I asked "is the bag free?" He replied "no, 10 cents". This time I said "no bags". The latest incident, came to buy some meat with a friend and brought my OWN bag to avoid this situation. Had enough items to fill my own bag full. During check-out, my friend was busy talking on cell, while I was busy putting items back into my bag after scanning. They sell all sorts of stuff here from rice to cigarettes. There is a small area in the back to get some meat. That's all we get meat and we dip out. The market is pretty small, as soon as you walk in there is a table with pre made food to buy. On the far left corner is the rice section. The veggies are on the back right of the market. AJ Mart is located inside the Normandy Village Shopping Center here in Stockton a few doors down from the SF Supermarket. My mom found this Asian Market and found out that their meat prices here are seemingly cheap, they price them at a reasonable cheaper price than the SF Supermarket and many other Supermarkets here in Stockton. The store itself is not fairly large, it's actually pretty small in size but it's your mom and pop type of store. They have fresh produce, meat & poultry, and many other Asian goods for a decent price. Customer Service here is great, very attentive and friendly. Open everyday from 8 AM - 7 PM. Love this little shop, they have a variety of different cuts of meats and produce that you will need for your daily south east Asian cooking. The employees are also pleasant. It's true about this place robbing you. Hopefully this will catch the owners attention and have this stop. Beware of the 2 asian ladies on the cash register. They are in their 40s I believe. I've run into many occasions where they would charge me 5 to 10 dollars extra for shit I didn't buy because of not paying attention. I would come to the car and say what the fuck did I buy that cost so much. After calculating everything, I know there's something wrong on my total. I would go back ask for the actually receipt. I confront them why am I being charge for this when I didn't buy? They'll look stupid and refund my money right away cause they know what they did. This store would usually give you a receipt of the total but not the break down of what's being purchased. I usually ask for the actual breakdown receipt. Once I was charge for a 12 pack beer I didn't buy. Guess how much that cost. Over 14 dollars, that they robbing me. I had to go back and confront those 2 bitches. Also cheated my wife too. What an asshole. So far, only the 2 bitch rob you. The guys that work on the register are honest. That's why each time I pay for my stuff, I usually go to the guy. read more

The people who work and own this place is good people. I just don't wanna do a bad review or say anything bad to my khmer people. They have excellent customer service and people skills. The only problem I have is the pre made food, the one that's located on the stand. They do not get rid of it or know and EXPERATION date on it, when it's rotten or old please take it off the shelf and not let your customer buy it at full price. I notice there are plenty of beggars and panhandlers around, give it to them or do something but not sell it to a full paying customer who is always at the store supporting the khmer community. This need to be looked upon, u are any one out there who says light skinned khmers are greedy, this pushes me. Is the owner light skinned and mix with chinese or Vietnamese? Cuz if so you are putting yourself in the greedy Cambodians who wants to kill you for a penny. Support your people don't feed them leftovers. Sometimes I drop by this store when I'm at SF Supermarket to buy their ready to eat foods. The other times I came here were fine, but my recent trip here will be my last. I bought two cups of tapioca drinks which was $3, I gave the cashier(old Cambodian lady) a $5 bill and waited for my change. Then the old Cambodian lady threw me my change. Literally, (imagine this) she threw my change on the table. That just pissed me off. She didn't say "oh sorry, here you go", not even a "thank you", nothing. She just threw my money and waited for me to leave. I wanted to say something, but it would have made me more pissed off. I shook my head, took my damn time collecting my money, and walked out of that store. I am never going back there again, if I could give no star, I would. Don't shop there, obviously this small business doesn't care about service, they care about taking your money!!
