I was visiting the Kansas City area from out of town and wanted to try KC BBQ, but didn't have transportation of my own to visit the ones I'd been recommended (like Oklahoma Joe's). But I couldn't NOT get barbeque, so we gave this place a try. I really liked the BBQ itself (I got pulled pork and my husband got ribs) and the portion sizes were generous and the meat was tender. I think they were a little heavy-handed on the black pepper, personally, but overall it was delicious. The fries were great, as was the potato salad, though I'm not sure how I felt about the cheesy corn. I also liked having three sauce options. Service was great, fast and friendly, and the owner (I think it was) even came over to our table and said hello, so that was very positive. I wouldn't say it's the best BBQ I've ever had, but it was very good. We'll be happy to come back next time we're in the area. read more

This place was a great find. We were headed to the Harry S Truman library when we spotted it. Eclectic restaurant with a catchy exterior and interior. The wait staff was very attentive and talked about the menu and the sauces. We ordered the ribs, burnt ends, potato salad and spicy coleslaw. The burnt ends were unbelievable. I would go out of my way for them every time! The ribs were Ok but I prefer babyback ribs. The potato salad was good but the spicy coleslaw was lacking in flavor. When here for lunch the other day and had their special which was a four rib dinner platter came with 2 sides. When the ridge came out they were big and meaty but just a little on the tough side. The ribs had just a hint of smoke flavor but not overpowering. I opted for the baked beans and coleslaw. The coleslaw is vinegar based and was very tasty but the baked beans were lacking as it tasted like they came from a can with nothing added to make them more appealing. I will go back as I'm told their brisket sandwiches are really good. It was a nice hearty lunch and being the special of the day (Thursday) it will only set you back just a little less than 10 dollars. It was decent bbq and worth a try. read more

This place really rocks! It looks like a large shack outside, but their food is wonderful! (Except for the coleslaw, which has so much celery seed it's inedible.) Inside it's crowded & noisy with people chowing down, so I usually order by phone & pick up my food - they have a canopy at the back door to make it easy. If you're ordering on a weekend, place your order early, because they run out of things quickly! The folks who work there are friendly and nice, and the cooks DEFINITELY KNOW how to make good barbecue! It's not cheap, but it's not outrageous, either. I think there had to have been 2 lbs of pulled pork on my sandwich :)))) The inside is a a no frills sort of place. But the food makes up for the darkness and old decor. The outside patio is a very nice option when it is warm out. My server was very friendly and efficient. The one part I did not like about my meal was the creamed corn. On my ever present quest for great BBQ we decided to try A Little BBQ Joint and upon entering, what a quaint little place. The staff here is inviting, attentive and friendly with a genuine family air with Don (the owner) making his rounds to ensure you visit is up to his standards. And let me tell you, they are serving topnotch, well flavored delicacies. Portions were gracious and everything was served promptly and hot. Having the Burnt ends, they were cut into nice size pieces with plenty of them and the St. Louis style ribs were large, meaty and tender all with a talented seasoning and wood flavored chemistry. This Pit Boss knows his smoke. OH! Their sauces, while not needed, Wow! When the "Mean Mother in Law" and "Mad House Wife" are available for purchase I will be buying by the gallon. As for sides, the fries were perfect, nice and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Their baked beans were also excellent with a nice flavor that compliments the meal wonderfully. Only lackluster parts (for us) were the Mac and cheese and cheesy corn. While not bad at all (I did finish it) the Mac was a little soupy, my preference would have been a little sticky with melted cheese on top. As for the cheesy corn, that was really soupy, and well, more like a corn chowder (again not bad at all, just not for me). Only other things; They do have live music which I can't speak to as we missed it. I think it was done before dinner and I'm not sure if they planned it that way however it was nice to talk during dinner. The beer selection was ok but I would have liked to see a few dark beers like Guinness and maybe even a few craft and seasonal beers (not to say go all out but possibly include a few local (MO) additions.. i.e. Mother's (Winter Grind), Schlafy or Perennial Artisan Ales ). As they grow and become more popular (which they will) I hope they can keep the same quality makeup of food (portions/quality) and services (family style). First time here & it could not have gone better. I thought timing was good but a server came over and stated you've been here a couple of minutes and no one has addressed you. She gave us an appetizer, bacon chips, which were awesome. We had the special which was a full slab of baby back ribs w/2 sides and could not have been happier. The hot potato salad was real good as well the beans. My wife had to try the cheesy corn which went over well. A good sign of the food was that we were both still satisfied hours later. We will most certainly be back to support local. Oh the sauces were good to; my suggestion is to got for the spicy "mean mother-in-law". We got burnt ends and a double meat platter to go close to closing and I wish we had been able to get there sooner. The food wasn't terrible, but it did feel like it was the leftovers. The burnt ends were really dry, we got turkey instead of chicken and the pulled pork was dry as well. The cheesy corn was really good, the mac n cheese was a solid miss (cheese was nacho cheesy in my opinion), and the hot potato salad was good. Overall it's a meh from me. I really used to enjoy coming here but I feel like the quality has gone down since I first started visiting in 2014. Burnt ends tasted like soft, fatty pot roast with no crunch, bacon chips were flimsy, fries were soggy and small. It's really a shame because this was legitimately my favorite BBQ spot in KC. The past couple visits have left me wanting more. It's also worth mentioning that we left almost the entire order of burnt ends untouched and our waitress didn't think to ask if they were okay. This place popped on my radar and i thought i'd give it a try. remember, I was STARVING. so inside i go, and the joint is decked out in some weird racing gear/motorcycle decor that obviously i didn't get, but it was rugged looking and the people working extremely friendly. as usually my go to to try out a BBQ is the brisket, no sauce, hit me with your meat. they also had a spicy coleslaw that looked appealing as well. first off, the spicy coleslaw was freaking amazing! it was also a very large portion, not the dinky little things you get at most bbq places. if i could give this place a review based on that little bucket of deliciousness, it would be 5 stars all the way. now to the meat. it was tender, juicy and everything i wanted in a brisket, except for one tiny thing. it tasted like it was cooked in an oven. there was zero smokey flavor to it. i didn't notice any smoke rings on the edges either. I'm not sure how they cook their meat. but I have no idea how you smoke a brisket without it being completely indundated with smokey flavor. it was a gut punch for sure. i liked every other single thing about the place, seriously, i will go back if i am in the area, and try something else, but seriously meh on that oven roasted meat. read more

My girlfriend and I went here on vacation as we were in the area and wow - talk about delicious food. We were immediately seated when we walked in and the waitress took our order. As we noticed that others around us were getting food (after we had arrived) our waitress comes back and said there was an issue in the kitchen and they were making our order now and she was going to give us a discount for the inconvenience. I ordered the brisket and pulled pork dinner place with cheesy corn and baked beans - it was delicious!! Fun little restaurant/bar close to Kauffman Stadium. We went about 430 on a Royals game day. By the time we left an hour later there was a line out the door. It wasn't busy when we arrived but it still took a long time for our server to take our order. Also, we had to ask for drink refills so the service won't win any prizes. The food makes up for that though. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich and said it may be the best she's ever had even without adding any BBQ sauce. I had the burnt ends which I found really dry. I added enough BBQ sauce to make them better. The best side is the fries by far. My son had the pulled pork of the kids menu which appeared to be almost the size of a regular order. That and a side would fill up most adults. I would go back when I'm in the area of the Sports Complex. read more

This place feels (in terms of general atmosphere) like a proper BBQ place in terms of its atmosphere and whatnot. Service was friendly and helpful. BBQ itself was delicious; we had burnt ends and a full slab of ribs, both of which were properly moist and flavorful. I really appreciated having vinegar-based rather than mayo-based coleslaw as the vinegar cuts really well through the fat of the meat. Admittedly, the burnt ends were a bit too salty for my taste, otherwise they would have been really incredible. I can't quite give this place 5 stars because, for how famous KC BBQ is, I was expecting to be a bit more wowed. But I really can't complain, and the food really was quite tasty. read more

Had family in from out of town and was having the perennial "Gates or Arthur Bryant's" debate when my SIL yelped and found this place less than 5 miles from my home. It's dark and homey, as long as your home is covered with random whimsical memorabilia. The server (Sara) was spectacular, giving us real, honest advice on the menu. I had the chef's special burnt ends pot pie which was DELICIOUS. Hot, peppery, tasty. The fam had ribs and cheesy corn and fries and chicken and beans - the portions were HUGE. I don't know that I'd call it legendary KC barbecue, but it was tasty, the price was right, and I will definitely be back. read more

I picked up burnt ends with three ribs carry out from this restaurant on 5/5. The BBQ was VERY disappointing. The burnt ends we're actually burnt and so tough some of them I couldn't even chew. The ribs were not very tender and very average. The two sides I had was their hot potato salad, which was actually pretty good, and baked beans which were average.
