While visiting Kansas City we found this sweet little place as rec by Yelpers. As we approached from the highway it looked like a little hole in the wall. Parking was packed though so we knew we were on the right track. When you walk in the joint in smells like BBQ heaven and the decor is just plain cool. The bar is made out of an old car and the entire place is far from a dive. Service was spot on and friendly. We went with eveything the server rec and we are glad we did. Burnt ends, hot potato salad, cheesy corn, ribs and brisket. All were wonderful but I could eat those burnt ends every day. If you get to KC, make this the required BBQ joint. They beat every other BBQ in KC! read more

I have to say they have the best bbq in Kansas City. The Bloody Mary was amazing it was more of an appetizer with the bacon and brisket that was in it. The sausage and brisket was very good, the meat is dry so you can add what ever kind of sauce you want that's at the table. I will definitely go back. read more

Everything about this place was an experience. Driving up it seems to be a quaint little hole in the wall. But as you go thru the door you know that it's something much more! Every little detail about this place is fantastic! And the food was phenomenal! We had a sampler of several meats and sides. Before our main dishes came though, we had a couple appetizers. Both were great (I shared pictures of both). The bbq wonton were good but the sauce that came with it was the bomb! Our favorite was the bacon chips! That is what I imagine will be served in heaven...it's that good! Their bbq sauces have awesome names and are very tasty! Sweet Sister, Mad housewife, crazy mother in law, and hot mistress...haha we tried sweet Sister and mad house wife and hey were very good!!! All the meats we had were great! For sides I would definately suggest the hot potato salad...it was our favorite! We tried alot of the stuff on the menu but not everything. We will have to try more the next time we come thru town. The owner (and the boss Lady ) were friendly and inviting! We learned about alot of the decor and they invited us to look around outside on the patio. No detail left undone! The best KC BBQ isn't even in KC, it's in Independence MO!!! We stumbled onto this place one Sunday afternoon after visiting the Truman Presidential Library and Museum. Great BBQ, burnt ends were the best we have ever had!!! Ribs, pork and brisket were all superior to the many places we have visited! The waitresses were very helpful and attentive. Good local beer selection and a band on the patio made this a fantastic visit!!! read more

The food was flavorful, the decor delightful, and the service surperb. We found this place on Google while visiting friends. As BBQ fans we were anxious to try something new. When we found the place, there was limited parking in the lot. We found a spit across the street and followed our noses to the buildinf. Once inside the place was full, but we found seats at the bar. Our bartender quickly got us menus and drinks and explained the sauces so we would get the heat we wanted. I really liked that the sauce was served on the side, allowing us to choose what we wanted and not overwhelming the meat. He ordered the pulled pork, beans, and cheesy corn. I had 1/4 chicken, beans, and mac and cheese. His pulled pork was firm but juicy, and my baked chicken was cooked perfectly. We shared some wontons, which was a little too much heat for me, but he enjoyed them greatly. The prices were in line with the quality of the food and service. We were a little disappointed that moist towelettes weren't available with the meal as sometimes fingers get a bit sticky. On the walls were interesting things to see, art and car memorabilia, and on the back deck live music and a pontoon boat seating 20 for special reservations. We checked out the bathrooms, and they were clean, nicely decorated, and had plenty of hand soap and towels. You can tell a lot from a place by how they keep up the restrooms. We also met some new friends -- a fellow named Butch and the owners and their family were all on site and it was great to see them all working together to make such a lovely experience for all their guests. read more

When we first moved to Independence about a year ago we knew that KC was known for BBQ. We were tired after a long day of driving to get here and wanted to eat somewhere close that would be good. We looked on Yelp and saw this place. WE WERE THRILLED with the food and have been back numerous times. The staff are great, the food is great and the ambiance is wonderful. So walking in the place is filthy. I sat at the bar and eventually got a menu. I was never offered anything to drink and the 3 girls I saw working there, were to preoccupied in conversation to be bothered taking my order or bringing me a drink. When the all three decided to stand around a table and carry on with their personal lives I left. No excuse for such poor service. Love the decor! The service was good but the food was just ok. Cheesy corn, fries and sausage were good. The sauces were good but not great. The ribs were ok but I prefer baby backs that tend to be less fatty. My biggest complaint would be that the brisket was way to dry and the beans too sweet. My friend was in from out of town and wanted to meet somewhere for BBQ. I found this place online, it was half way between us and had good reviews. Two of us ordered the Burnt Ends dinner, one with added ribs and one Sinister Sister Meatloaf Sandwich. I have to say, none of us were fans. The Burnt Ends were dry, dry, dry and so salty. We had an order of "spicy slaw" which was literally just red cabbage in a bowl with nothing on it. The ribs were okay, once I finally got them, but they were also very dry and extremely under-seasoned. Not much flavor at all. The meatloaf was cut fairly thin and the bread overwhelmed the sandwich. None of us cared for any of the three sauces that they offered. The best thing any of us ate were the baked beans, they were excellent. In a town where BBQ joints with names like Gates and Bryants and Joes stride like Cue Colosses in the pantheon of KC pit masters, A Little BBQ Joint, ironically operating in Independence, quietly stakes its ground as one of the top barbecue eateries on either side of the state line. They could expand the variety of their meats and sides, and toss in an offering for the non-carnivores who travel with with the wolf packs who come for the stellar ribs, brisket, and chicken of the current menu. What is on there though passes the base test of "No lie if it's great when it's dry" That is to say, when you don't slather it with sauce how does the meat fare? The rub is enough without being overpowering,and the cuts are lean enough and great grades of meat. If that wasn't enough, the atmosphere of this place breaks with the tradition of the sterile, all-business meateries that have been the norm on the midwestern cue scene. It's not fast-foodie looking like Joe's. It's hip and casual with cool kitsch. The service? Not just good. Amazing. We came with our one vegetarian. There is not much in the way of offerings there (none really other than grilled cheese). The waitress, a recovering plant gnasher, offered my daughter a peanut butter sandwich out of her own stock that she brought to work, and brought her her some heirloom tomatoes to snack on as well. For those of us visiting from Manhattan Under the Palms, Southeast Florida, that kind of generosity was quite touching, and we really appreciated it. These are not only the rising stars of the KC que scene, but they're coming up with a fusion of the bar/gastropub feel with rock-star barbecue. GO. GO. (Why are you still reading this??) As we strolled in to KC looking to try some of the local BBQ masterpieces we came upon "a little BBQ joint". Situated on top of a hill, the smoke smell is welcoming as you walk in from the gravel parking lots. 5pm and on a Friday night and it was packed. We sat our selves and might have got lost a little in the shuffle, but once we got service it was amazing. We ordered a half pound of sausage and half point of brisket, side of cole slaw and side of potato salad. Sausage- hardwood smoked, hand made, nice solid casing with a good fat ratio. The hot was not overly spicy. Brisket- was for sure on the lean side, and and a very nice smoke ring... No cheap sauce poured on the top just pure flavor. 3 Sauces- all homemade- all very good- I suggest the mean mother in law sauce- thick and spicy. Cole slaw was different- not mayo based but really fresh and great taste. Total price with tip included and drinks -$29 for a ton of food. read more

I rely on YELP reviews when I'm out of town, so when I read the recent negative review I was ready to skip A Little BBQ Joint. BUT... it was just down the street from the Truman Library, I did skip breakfast and I was really hungry. I am so glad I didn't by-pass this little gem. The Burnt Ends were awesome and being Thursday it was rib day. The ribs were excellent, the sides were different (cheese corn/spicy coleslaw) and the potato salad/beans were great, too. Parking lot was somewhat filled at this early lunch time, but by the time we left it was packed. No wonder between the food and service I can see how it would be a jamming place for lunch or dinner. Week 5 in "The KC BBQ Tour." The pulled pork was a bit greasy, but the meat had great flavor, and it was on a nice toasted bun. With the sandwich three choices in sauce, from sweet to spicy. The sauce had a non-traditional taste but that worked in their favor, it was nice to have a new taste. The fries were cooked in a high temperature oil that dropped the appearance but over all had a great taste. The scored an 84%. read more

Give me Barbecue----ANYTIME! And after our lunch visit to A Little BBQ Joint on 24 Highway at the eastern edge of Independence, MO today I'll say "give me another visit to this nifty, locally owned and operated venue as soon as possible!" Dear Daughter #1 invited us to celebrate her dad's birthday and said she and her family discovered A Little BBQ Joint about six months ago, loved it and thought we would too. So today was the day. One of our grandsons was available to join us, giving three generations of perspective. It has been my observation that barbecue restaurants are more likely to be "out-there" with different and unusual decorating themes. And A Little BBQ Joint is no exception to that rule. In this small space there is an homage to the love of the American automobile. In fact, to nearly all things automotive! The main counter is mounted on a Chevy Malibu body and I also spotted the front of a Caddy holding up the cash register stand. The booths are graced with what looks like automobile bench seats, oil cans have been made into hanging light fixtures. License plates are tacked up all around the walls -- be sure to check out the 1950s Kansas plate to the left of the entrance (in the shape of the state). And there are some really cool old collectible trucks and cars on shelves up in the shadows near the ceiling. But the decorating touches play a distant second-fiddle once you are delivered the baskets of food they serve up at A Little BBQ Joint! From the sandwiches menu, I was torn between choosing Pulled Pork, Brisket, Ham, Turkey or Smoked Sausage. Sandwiches are served on a bun with fries and a pickle. There is also an option to add extra meat, but in honesty the Smoked Sausage, which I finally decided on, was already falling out of the edges of the bun onto the plate, so I'm not sure I could have eaten any extra! I asked our sweet and friendly server, Amy, if I could substitute baked beans for my fries and she said "sure". Hubby ordered a Burnt Ends dinner, which has a half-pound of meat, bread, pickle and two sides. It looked delicious and he got fries and baked beans. He polished off most of the plate but did bring home a few pieces of the meat for later. Both DD#1 and our grandson ordered one of their favorite "Specialty Sandwiches" (served with TWO sides and pickle) The Brisket Melt is a generous stack of brisket on toasted rye bread with Swiss cheese and grilled onion. I tasted some of their fries and they were great -- crispy but with good potato flavor and soft insides. They also had the baked beans and DD#1 said she doesn't really like most baked beans but always loves these. There are a lot of other choices on the menu at A Little BBQ Joint including Ribs, Chicken, spicy cole slaw and Hot potato salad. The folks who run the place are really nice and go out of their way to be sure you are having a great dining experience. I heard lots of patrons called by name and I heard the owner as he thanked nearly every customer for stopping by. All in all, I am looking forward to more visits to this Little BBQ Joint in the coming months. read more

(see photos) Staff is friendly and you feel welcome just walking in the door. 3 sauces to choose from "Sweet Sister", Mad Housewife" and Mean Mother-in-Law (Spicy).
