Last two years, I had 4 nails stuck on one of the tires. The flat tire warning light came on the dashboard. One time was in Alameda and no auto shops wanted to fix (plug) the tire. I live about 3 blocks away from this place so I put a lot of air on my flat tire (in Alameda) and drove to this shop. I got there around 5:30 and they looked busy closing up but they were glad to help me out. We weren't sure which tire it was flat so i appreciate them taking time to check. They spent about 30 minutes to fix everything and it only cost me $15. Other 3 times, the flat tire warning light came on the dashboard when I was leaving for work. I drove to this place again. Again, they looked pretty busy with other cars but they immediately looked at the tires and found the nail and fIXed it right away. Since then no leaks. I really appreciate their help. Otherwise, I'd have been late for work. If I have any car troubles or routine maintenance, I'd definitely go there. I've been going to Lei at A-1 since 2006 and he's been the example of what a great neighborhood mechanic should be like. I've had him work on my 2000 Nissan Pathfinder, 2007 BMW 328i, and my 2009 Infiniti G37. He's done a great job on all three cars and he's always been super honest with what my cars needed. He's been honest with how long I should wait for services, as well as what has been mission critical for me to get done on my car so that more costly services don't come around due to neglect. On both Thursday and Friday morning my family car wouldn't start, and my wife really needed to drive our son to school and to the her office to help her clients with their complex issues. At first, I assumed it was water in the gas tank because the night before we had filled up the gas tank from a no-name discounted gas station. In desperation, at 8pm on a Friday night, the day before July 4th, I left the repair shop a voicemail. Immediately half an hour later (8:30pm), I received a phone call from Mr. Le. Instead of telling me to wait two days for the next business day or to bring it to his repair shop, we talked for about half an hour going over the situation and the weird noise that my car was making. Based on his assessment, he recommended a DIY fix without seeing my car, and unbelievably, his assessment was correct!! I was able to DIY fix my family car the following morning. These guys are pretty good. They will do general service for your car or diagnose your vehicle's problem. They seem honest and won't rip you off (much). Of course, being the inherently cheap bastard that I am, I usually just use them for diagnosis and do the repair myself. But I don't doubt they are competent to do it. Took my car in for a smog check, they have a really good price - 40 bucks flat includes everything for a Tacoma 05 One of the few smog places close by that was open til 6. They lost one star because they had only 1 smog tech and we had to wait for him, but the guy was really good about hurrying up when we told him we needed to get to the bank before 6. I took my 91 Eclipse to them because my alternator belt was squealing something fierce. Not only did they diagnose and repair the issue, they kept in touch with me and were constantly updating me on the situation. I like the constant communication and I believe it's important for a good shop to do this. Everything was broken down and made simple to understand. Also, they didn't repair anything unless I specifically said so, so there were no "surprises" or hidden charges on my bill. The only gripe I honestly have is just the fact that it took a while to fix, but that's reasonable because they're a busy shop. An honest shop for sure. Lei Du is quite possibly the most HONEST and understanding mechanic I've ever met. Two qualities you usually don't find at any auto shop now days. I came here with a junker that an in-law family member already cost me $1k to try to fix but couldn't. Lei checked it out for me (ran a full diagnostic but only charged me an oil leak check. $40 for $120 worth)..gave me a list and an estimate, then told me "the car isn't worth it." AND was concerned about me driving it home (I had my infant daughter with me) told me to park it and never drive it again... Now I own a 2006 Prius and came here for an oil change and tire rotation. $40 total. He told me about a possible sensor issue within my tires but said not to worry as long as I check the pressure regularly. That was 4 months ago, and now I'm back for another oil change. I've posted pictures of their services board, some prices listed. To give an estimate, my 2006 Prius is only costing me $25 for an oil change--regular oil. Connected to the former 76 gas station (forgot what it is called now). Stopped by here around 11:00 am on a Friday for a smog check. Lei helped me and he said it'll be done in 30 minutes and it certainly was. Paid exactly $40 which is a reasonable price. Provided me with a receipt and a certificate. There are two couches in front where you could sit and wait if you want; there's no TV or anything so you're better off being on your phone. Conveniently I just crossed the street and got a drink at Starbucks and browsed Rasputins. If the wait is longer you could cross Hesperian Blvd. and get some Taco Bell, In-N-Out or you can shop at Walmart. read more

I love this mechanic! I have an older car that is starting to have a lot of issues. From tires and rims to battery to belts and general servicing. Lei is always very communicative, patient, and extremely honest. He always tells me up front what my options are and allows me to choose whether I want to go the cheaper route or more top of the line. The crew turns the work around really quickly. Usually not more than a business day or two, even for fairly substantial work. I've lived in the area for a few years and I'll keep coming back here as long as I can. read more

I've been coming here for the past few years for routine oil changes and other maintenance issues. The mechanic who runs this place, Lei, is very helpful and honest, and his guys work fast. And even if there's something you're a bit concerned about, just ask. You can never be too safe with your car. Even if it's something they're not equipped to do here, like alignments, he's more than willing to take a look at it for you to let you know what your problems are, free of charge. The only downside is if you plan on just waiting here while he and his crew work on your car. Since the shop is so small, all he has is a couch in the shop with no TV, so bring a book or play on your phone. Or you can go across the street to Starbucks and hang out there for a bit. read more

My 1994 Jeep Cherokee failed its smog check, and i frantically came here to figure out why. Lei ran through the Jeep and explained what was wrong. There was a leak at the exhaust manifold, and that ruined my CAT. it was a pretty expensive repair, and it was also a repair i could do myself at home with a few friends. so he told me what to replace, and low and behold it passed smog. I normally do not write reviews, but Mr. Lei and his team deserve some kudos for Today 9/1/2018. Found a nail in my tire (brand new ~3000 miles) today, which probably happened a few days ago, as I did not drive the car for a few days. Called several wheel/tire shops in the area; two WheelWorks, & the Big O' Tires that are within a few miles of each other. WheelWorks - Our machine broke/We are booked till Tuesday Big O' Tires - We are booked, and we want to leave by 3 PM today (lost my business forever with this one). My dad comes to Mr. Lei for regular maintenance/issues with his cars, so we gave him a call, and he was able to squeeze me in to repair my flat. Dropped off the car around 1PM, and picked up at 3:30PM. The fix looks great. I know the fix may be temperoary, but I hear these fixes can last the life of the tire. Hopefully it does! Will be sending recommendations to Mr. Lei. Great service and very genuine guy! read more

Le and his team are awesome. They are one of, if not the most honest and efficient auto shop I have ever been to. It's a small shop but they do great work, their prices are reasonable and most importantly, they are honest. Le is a great guy to work with. He clearly communicates to you what you need and doesn't bs you. I brought in a 97 Honda Civic that needed a ton of work and Le patiently went over what I absolutely needed and what I could hold off on. He also gave me guidance and advice on what to do if he had to open up a certain area of the car anyway so I can save on future labor costs. Brought my car in after I've experienced some infrequent metallic grinding / noises from the engine (vbelt) area. The owner Lei took a look at the car and explained that he'll have to diagnose the problem and call me later throughout the day. Two hours later he explained the problem in detail and gave me a quote of the repair, also explaining that the car will probably have to stay until Thursday, perhaps Friday. One day later he calls me and tells me that the repairs are completed, the test drive is about to be done and I can pick it up today. For anyone wondering, it was a combination of water pump, pulleys, tensioners and vbelt. Now here's where the 6 star review comes if it were possible to give 6 stars: I show up, and he actually comes up to me with a bag of my broken parts and explains in great detail what each part does, and how it's broken. This is something that you JUST DO NOT see anywhere anymore. This is top quality right there. Not only does the car drive as if it were new again, but the way Lei took his time to go through everything with you really deserves a perfect review. This man has just guaranteed future business should I ever need work done on my car again. read more
