I was taken care of immediately when I showed up for my appointment and they even offered me a ride to and from my house for pick. I got text message updates throughout the process which included photos to see how they were diagnosing the issues with my vehicle. I could click through the option of services to see which ones I approved them to do and I chose to decline. I also liked they had a camera where you could watch them work on your car live. Where do I begin? I genuinely wanted to like this place because I had read several positive reviews, and my initial experience with the staff and customer service was pleasant. I brought my car in because it wasn't driving the way it normally does. They kept the vehicle for a day and contacted me the following day to recommend replacing the transmission. The estimate was approximately $9,800, which was far beyond what I expected--and, quite frankly, extremely concerning. My vehicle is not yet six years old, and I have consistently kept up with routine maintenance, including regular oil changes. Naturally, I was very disappointed to be told that I needed a replacement transmission, especially at that cost. I decided to get a second opinion from another repair shop, and I'm very glad I did. They diagnosed the issue as spark plugs and ignition coils--not a transmission problem. After replacing those components, my car is now running beautifully. I appreciate the customer service I received, but unfortunately, I cannot justify returning to a shop that would recommend a repair of nearly $10,000 when the actual issue turned out to be something significantly less expensive. I understand that diagnostics can sometimes be complicated and that different shops may reach different conclusions. We took it to Stress Free in Castro Valley to have a diagnostic check, and the major fluids replaced. They completely missed several issues, and massively over-charged on the service they did do. We had to bring it back because of all the items they missed. They wanted to do those repairs at huge markups. We took it elsewhere, and had the repairs done for a fraction of Stress-Free's quote. Long time customer with a serious concern to share. April 2025: Paid $549 for belt and tensioner replacement (Invoice #73490). April 2026: Car wouldn't start. Shop diagnosed a leaking oil filter housing gasket that their own technician documented was dripping oil directly onto the belt, tensioner, and alternator -- destroying the belt replaced just 12 months prior. Paid $3,815.03 (Invoice #75373) for repairs. Their own tech notes stated affected components should be thoroughly cleaned. This was not done. Check engine light came on immediately after pickup. Third party mechanic confirmed P0171 fault code and belt debris left inside the engine from the repair. Shop offered only 10% discount on additional repairs rather than honoring their 24-month/24,000-mile warranty. All facts are documented on invoices and third party diagnostic reports. read more

I picked up a nail in the middle of my front right tire (plenty of tread still on tire) and the guy on the phone said I had to make an appointment to go to the shop so I did. I told him I took the tire off and will be coming down with just the tire. When I got to the shop the workers said they can't patch my tire bc they needed to do a routine car inspection if I want the tire fix. Ended up leaving because they didn't want to fix my tire unless the vehicle was there. They might do good work but obviously want to make as much money off you as possible. read more

Great place to bring you car for service. They have an area to wait if you would like or use their work station to work while you wait. They do offer and uber ride if you are within their service distance. I would have appreciated an offer of water or coffee while I wanted but it isn't a requirement though customer service touch. I appreciate they will contact you before they do any additional service once the tech has inspected the car and furthermore they provide a details report of the good performance your car has and where it needs service. It would be nice to get a price on each of the service needs but they will offer an estimate if you ask. They've been got an attitude with me and started raising his voice. Like I told him both times that I spoke to him, it was in a very disrespectful manner from his behalf. But the fact that I was experiencing a oil leak in my car and there was no oil in my vehicle at all and it started making some weird noise to whereas I took it down to go get an oil change because the oil change light came on. Saying the vehicle needed to be serviced that cost me $169.00 why would you take the oil out of someone's vehicle so the engine can seize up? I would never recommend this company to anyone. You must be very careful when you are dealing with stress-free. I Don't Care. Nothing about it is stress-free. I have been going through it ever since I picked up my vehicle. I spoke to them yesterday and told me if I want anything done I would have to seek outside help. I really wanted to have a positive experience with Stress-Free Auto Care because my first impression was great. Everyone was friendly, professional, and they strongly emphasized communication and transparency. Unfortunately, my experience ended up being the complete opposite. From the beginning, I often had to call for updates myself despite being told I would receive calls and texts regarding my vehicle. On multiple occasions, I was told someone would contact me, only to hear nothing and have to follow up myself. The first major issue occurred when I was told my car was ready for pickup. I arranged transportation and had my husband drive me all the way to Castro Valley, only to find out my vehicle wasn't ready at all. The part hadn't even been ordered. The employee apologized on behalf of his co-worker and offered a $100 discount for the inconvenience. I specifically asked whether the updated price and discount would be documented because I wanted proof of the agreement. I was assured that every change made to the invoice was saved in their system and that there would be no issue when I returned. When I eventually came back to pick up my vehicle, the discount was gone and the total was different. I had to argue for the discount that had already been promised. That immediately raised concerns about their record keeping and accountability. I originally brought my vehicle in because it struggled to accelerate, displayed Stabilitrak and traction control warnings, and often behaved as though it wasn't properly engaging into gear. I was told the shifter assembly needed to be replaced before they could determine whether anything else was wrong. While I understand no diagnosis is guaranteed, they gave me the impression that they were very confident this repair would resolve the issue. Based on their recommendation, I approved the repair and paid over $1,200. What makes this even more confusing is that after the shifter assembly was replaced, I was told the vehicle had been repaired, tested, and was ready for pickup. If the shifter replacement did not actually resolve the issue, why was the vehicle released to me as fixed? I was never told that additional diagnostics were needed or that the original problem was still present. Instead, I drove away believing the issue had been resolved. Within days, the exact same warning lights and drivability issues returned. The vehicle again acted as though it didn't know what gear it was in, struggled to accelerate, and became unsafe to drive. I had the vehicle towed back under warranty and, after another round of diagnostics, I was presented with another estimate for over $1,600 for a completely different component. What concerns me most is the inconsistency. The first inspection identified multiple suspension and safety-related items as requiring urgent attention. A later inspection listed many of those same items as good despite no repairs being performed. If something is urgent one week but fine the next, which inspection am I supposed to trust? My frustration isn't just about the money. It's about trust. I trusted the diagnosis, I trusted the communication, I trusted that agreed-upon pricing would be properly documented, and I trusted the inspection reports I was given. By the end of the experience, I no longer felt confident in any of those things. Between the communication issues, being told my vehicle was ready when it wasn't, the disappearing discount, the conflicting diagnoses, the inconsistent inspection reports, and paying over $1,200 only to have the original problem return almost immediately, I ultimately lost confidence in the recommendations I was being given and decided to seek a second opinion elsewhere. Avoid this place at all costs and I would give this place 0 stars if I could. This shop quoted me $3,200 to replace a control arm because they claimed the guide bolt couldn't be removed and the entire part had to be replaced. They didn't even attempt to extract the bolt they immediately pushed for a full replacement. I took my car to Harrys Auto Repair for a second opinion, and they removed the bolt immediately and fixed the issue without replacing the entire control arm. I saved roughly $2,900. In my experience, this shop went straight for the most expensive option instead of actually trying to repair the problem. That doesn't sit right with me. Get a second opinion before agreeing to anything here. You could save yourself thousands. read more

Edit: Hi Eunice I mentioned no information about myself or my car. I made an appointment to take my car in for engine issues. They have a $240 diagnostic (which you can get for half off with code "'MYCAR") so I opted for that thinking that someone might actually put some thought into the process but I was wrong. What I got was a scan that I can get for free at any Autozone and a visual inspection that is basically useless. Didn't check any fluids, didn't even inspect the engine. They only want to go off codes. Furthermore, after that $120 scan, they wanted to charge me for 2 more hours of diagnostics at the regular rate of $240 so another $480 total just to maybe be able to find out what's the issue with the car. They don't do any big engine work here. They'll replace your spark plugs and that's about as far as they'll go before they send you off to a real repair shop. This place is a maintenance facility it's not a repair shop. They don't have real mechanics they have technicians who don't have real experience working on cars. I can imagine this place being stress free for oil changes, spark plugs, etc... but at these rates you might as well go straight to the dealership or real mechanic and put all that diagnostic $$$ towards repairs. I almost got swindled into a bill of over $1k without ANY sort of guarantee that it would fix the issue. Just trial and error pretty much.
