This place is tucked away with it's onlwn parking lot. I found that super nice because I was worried about finding street parking with all the construction. Walking in, it felt like I was in an Asian restaurant with plenty of space and familiar tunes playing. The staff was very attentive and quick as well. The food was awesome as well. I was very happy to find the durian smoothie on the menu, plus it's likely the best I've had in Minnesota. The phổ đặc biệt was very flavorful. Aw man, I had high hopes for our experience here. Unfortunately, the day we visited left much to be desired. We came on a snowy cold night, and unfortunately, it was nearly as cold inside the restaurant. It seemed that they had a heater issue, as they had multiple space heaters throughout the restaurant. Or perhaps it's the building, as the booth we sat at near the window was very drafty - we ended up keeping our coats on for our meal. Service was very minimal and the woman taking our order seemed bothered that we were there though we were only one of two tables inside. She was very curt, to the point of rudeness, when interacting with us. The pho broth was good, but the chicken in my pho was rubbery and very overcooked - I ended up eating around it. My friends really enjoyed their beef pho, though! It was a smaller bowl than I've gotten at other spots but it was eatable in one sitting and I appreciated the lower price to reflect the portion size. The broth got cool fast, maybe because of type of bowl or it being cold inside the restaurant. I might give this spot another try in the future, but unfortunately with so many other awesome Vietnamese spots in the area, it won't be high on my list. read more

My youngest wanted Vietnamese Udon Noodles soup and so with an hour before closing we came here for some banh canh and pho to satisfied both of my girls's wants. Service was prompt and I can't believe how good their water tastes. It's the best I would have to say. We order the banh canh and pho tai. Both soups were flavorful and good prices. Service was very friendly and the gal that waited on us was very kind and helpful. Love that they have almost everything for every mood. If they have Vietnamese sweet and sour soup on the menu I would definitely come here a lot because then it would be everything I want to eat under once roof! Best pho in Minneapolis! We are regulars and are never disappointed in the service or the food. Our typical order includes a G2 banh mi, an order of the spring rolls, and two #1 pho. The broth in the pho is my favorite in the cities and I love the portion size. The peanut sauce that comes with the spring role is my favorite. I'm embarrassed to admit that I had no idea this restaurant was here, but after walking out of Eat Street crossing we saw it across the street and had to give it a try! Don't let the construction near the restaurant entrance food you, it is definitely open and HUGE! It had way more seating inside than I had expected and definitely a mom and pop shop you should consider visiting! My husband and I both got a porkchop rice platter that was quickly brought out no more than 10 minutes before ordering. The porkchops were perfectly grilled where it had a Smokey grill flavor without being over cooked or dry. The broken rice was also great and not overly mushy which can be an easy downfall. You also get a healthy helping of pickled daikon, carrots, and cabbage. I was initially bummed there weren't any cucumbers that came with the dish but it was all so tasty with the well balanced fish sauce that I ate the whole thing with no complaints! So good! read more

I've never been to a more authentic Vietnamese Pho restaurant. I wasn't sure if I was in the right place when I arrived. The moment I walked in, the atmosphere completely changed. The space is quite large and pleasant! I ordered some egg rolls and the special Pho. The eggrolls were perfectly fried and delicious. It had a nice crunch without crumbling. The dipping sauce went well with it. The Pho was phenomenal. This is the Pho for you if you prefer your Pho with a clear broth and a beefy flavor. It is the best Pho I have ever had in Minnesota. That is a huge statement, but it is true. The high quality of the meat cuts worked well together with the broth and noodles. The most important thing about a good bowl of Pho is the portion size -- it was perfect! Not too much, not too little. Overall, this is my new go-to for Pho. read more

My friend had their eggrolls and banh mi which looked insanely good, and I'll have to come back for those next time. Maybe my tastes are different, but I found the pho a little bland, especially having recently eaten at MT Noodle in Brooklyn Park. Points for a generous plate of herbs and sprouts to accompany my bowl. Located at the dead-end of Nicollet behind the can't-be-killed Kmart, Pho Tau Bay is easy to miss since it's not in the heart of things. That said, it offers extensive vegetarian options (most of which are vegan by default) and really good vegan pho. We got the "ca ri dau hu" ($12.50) which is a creamy yellow coconut curry with potatoes, carrots and tofu. The dish is mild and not bursting with flavor, but it's not bad, either. The "dau hu xao bong cai xanh" ($12.50) is a simple, light stir-fry with tofu, carrots and broccoli. It won't wow you, but it's fresh and not heavy. The "banh mi dau hu" ($7) can be made vegan if you omit the butter and pate. I thought this was bland and less than the sum of its parts. The bread was passable, but the lack of seasoning to the tofu killed the dish. If you want the best vegan banh mi in town, head a flew blocks north to Lu's Sandwiches. Lastly, the "hu tieu nuoc chay" ($11) is essentially vegan pho and really damn good. It's hearty, fresh and deeply savory with an excellent broth. The interior of the restaurant is happily 1970s beige and brown with carpet and regulars. Make sure to stop by before it gets hipster-ified. read more

My 1st time here over the weekend as I was checking out an exhibit at the Mia nearby with a group of 7. We needed a large enough restaurant for lunch so we wouldn't have to wait for a table. My friend suggested this place & said there was a large free parking lot which sealed the deal. Came here on a Saturday over lunch time. There was plenty of seating but we're also in pandemic-times so it didn't feel packed in there. THE SERVICE Overall, I can see how my experience would of been frustrating if I didn't have my friend who's been here multiple times with me. There's no sign indicating whether you should seat yourself or wait to be seated. My friend said we should wait by the booth-like massive counter for someone to seat us. This is the same counter you go to after your meal & tell them your table number. The table number was up on the wall above us so make sure to note that before paying. This restaurant requires you to be assertive lol. I made eye contact & waved down our server to order. When a few of us needed some to-go containers we just took them from behind a table. And like I said, when we were done, we didn't wait for anyone to bring us a bill. You just go to the front counter. For any newbies, if you follow this guide, you'll have no problems. I can see why service is common complaint in these Yelp reviews but went just fine for my first dining experience here. THE FOOD Ambiance of this place feels like a old school Asian mom & pop shop but don't matter since my food was awesome! Pro-tip is that the pork broth is much tastier than the beef broth. I tried my friend's beef pho & it was just ok. I got the #26 "Hu Tieu Mi Kho" which is served dry and then you add the broths to it. The one thing to beware of tho is that there's a shrimp in a fried dough that comes with the shell in it. I had to dissect it a bit & take that off before attempting to eat it again. I did try a bit of the other dishes & there's nothing more satisfying than knowing your dish is the tastiest at your table haha. The bahn mi two folks got looked great and they were pleasantly surprised that their bread was toasted. I liked the egg rolls here. I'd skip the boba tho. Wasn't bad, just not amazing. Recently re-opened from COVID and prices have slightly went up, but still among the cheaper Vietnamese spots on eat street. Service is always solid at Pho Tau with food coming out very quickly. I have spent a few Christmas meals here over the years so its always great to be back. Their giant pork egg rolls have won best in the city a few years ago in City Pages and they did not disappoint. The fish sauce they use for dipping for the egg rolls always hits the spot. Banh mi is my go to here and I got the grilled chicken this time. Banh mi has the perfect ratio of good bread, fresh vegetables, and portions of delicious meat. Each table at Pho Tau Bay has tons of sauces available to add some heat to your food. If you've read any of my other reviews I love Vietnamese soups and I have a couple favorite places. Since my favorite on eat street is closed on Thursdays I tried Pho Tau Bay. I had the G1 Banh Mi with grilled pork and meatballs and the #30 Mi -Yellow Egg Noodle(pork broth soup) which turned out to be a soup on the side soup. I only intended to eat half the Banh mi but it was probably one of the best I've had and I quickly devoured it. Sweet and salty pork, crunchy warm bread, spicy jalapeño and crunchy veggies - 5 stars. The soup, deconstructed soup I guess was just okay. The broth was Luke warm and lacked the deep flavor of my favorites. I had to try to layer in more flavor with the accompaniments of which I will say they have a good selection. I really enjoyed the fried egg wonton with the shrimp inside that came on the side - 3 stars. Ambiance was seriously lacking and the place was kind of dingy and smelled a bit musty. I almost didn't even go in when I saw Nicollet ending and the condition of the building next door - 2 stars. So all in all I'd say it's a 3.5 stars for me but I will definitely be back to try more of the Banh Mi selections and the bun Bo hue. read more

I was actually greeted by someone on their way out who said I can't go wrong with any of the Pho options, which was really comforting to hear! I ordered the spring rolls which is always a must, and the Pho with beef and brisket. I will say that if this is your first Pho experience, I might try a different spot first where they can explain and help you choose options. This is my Pho standard bearer in Minneapolis and long-time favorite. It's the counterpart to iPho in St. Paul for me. The pho and everything else here is authentic, and always consistently on point. Many people prefer Quang, and as for me, the food is really comparable between the places. The differences are in the externals: Pho Tau Bay has its own dedicated parking lot, which is a HUGE advantage on Eat Street. It's never crazy crowded like Quang, and service is always super quick. Both places have grumpy people, so that is equally "buyer beware" kinda thing. (See my Quang review) My favorites here are: Deep fried shrimp and sweet potatoes Pho Dac Biet Bun Bo Hue Bun Thit Help Nuong - rice noodle salad with grilled pork Banh Mi - Vietnamese sandwiches on French loaf They also have great beverage and dessert selections!! My favorite place for pho anywhere I've tried it in the Twin Cities...but I should say I don't venture much to St.Paul or BP. What is the key to a good restaurant? Consistency of course! This restaurant is consistently good and has been for a long time. IMO, this place has the best pho around. The broth is beefy and clear and has just the slightest taste of star anise and sweetness. I have had pho that had really sweet broth and pho that had really sour broth. They have no balance and are really unsatisfying. Also, the Bun with Grilled Pork is one of the best I've had. The pork is nice and charred and tastes incredibly good. Their Banh Mis aren't the best, though the fillings are always great, the baguette is hit or miss. Sometimes they're really hard and stale. I could eat Pho Tau Bay every day; if that isn't an endorsement as to how great their food is, well I'm not sure what else I could say. read more

I ordered Bun Bo Hue (Spicy noodles soup) and I am not impressed. The meats needed to cook longer, they were chewy and not enough flavor. I've heard such great things about Pho Tau Bay from friends, including Vietnamese buds, so I'm disappointed I may have experienced an off night? First off, service was unsatisfactory from the beginning to end. We waited for so long to order... eventually we had to flag someone down. The almost-total-lack of service (in a sparse dining room) made for a very long, slow, dinner. Our server was nice and friendly when we did flag her down, though. I got the #50: broken rice with pork chop, pork rinds, and "meat pie" (cha trung). I've get this often at Vietnamese restaurants and thought this was well done overall, but the cha trung was a bit dry. I tried my friend's pho, and it was seriously slacking in flavor. It was almost shocking. Other friends got dishes they liked a lot, like the bun rieu (weekend special) and banh cuon. I also ordered the #2 cold cut banh mi. I loved the bread and the flavorful fillings, but it was skimpy on the meat. All that said, I really want to come back and give them another chance! read more

Handout my new favorite place to get Vietnamese food in uptown! I initially went here because there was a line at Quang and I did not want to compromise being in the warm place to wait in the cold, so my friend and I decided to try out a new place! We ordered a pho, a Chao long (chitterlings porridge), banana and coconut milk dessert and a durian smoothie. As you can see, the Chao long and the durian smoothie are something that a bit more exotic so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that haven't tried these two before. Anyway, the pho here was soooo good. The broth definitely had a lot of favor; it was fatty, earthy, and more meaty tasting than the pho broth I had at Quang. It was also less chemically sweet than most places. The bowl is some what smaller than the bowl of pho at Quang but it would still fill you up. The Chao long was pretty good even though I thought it was a tiny bit too sweet, but they almost had all the elements, the fried onions, the cilantro, the tiny bit of black peppers for flavor, and, my favorite, the deep fried bread sticks (quay). The dessert was okay, we thought the banana coconut dessert was a bit too thick and the durian smoothie was lack of smoothie flavor. However, since this was not smoothie season, we gave them a pass. Anyway, in general, I'd go back here for more pho and definitely try out other dishes that they have! read more

There are so many pho places between Minneapolis and St. Paul, it can be hard to figure out where you should go. But don't worry, you are in the place and perhaps reading the right review?! I've been supporting Pho Tau Bay for a long time and was introduced to it through my extended family. This place has been around for quite some time and can often get missed, since it is located at the end of Nicollet Avenue (before you take the goofy detour around a few blocks). There is plenty of parking, since they have their own private lot; so you don't have to worry about those door dings or attempting to parallel park (hey, I know some of you out there can get anxiety about parallel parking under pressure!). The moment you walk in, your nose gets hit with the smell of homemade broth that has been simmering for hours. There is booth and table seating, and my family usually rolls in hard with a large crew (pre-Coronovirus times). Recently, we ordered take out, nearly the same when you get it home! Our usual go to items are spring rolls, egg rolls, wings, combo pho, rice platter and rice noodle salad. I personally always get the rice platter, where the pork chop is precut for you and has a nice sweet glaze all over; making eat bite with rice and fish sauce, that much tastier. The pho is a clean and crisp broth, with a less star anise flavor; which is favored by some pho shops in the area. You'll always get fresh veggies and clean broth. The last thing I'll mention here is this; most of the time, you will get good table side service and consistent food. It's always difficult for me to choose where to go with multiple Vietnamese restaurants in this neighborhood. What usually happens is that I end up rotating between a few. It'd been awhile since I was last at this place, but I wanted to give it a try again. (There wasn't any reason for not coming here in the past, it's just that I got stuck in a cycle of going to other places up the street.) What stands out initially about this restaurant is that they have a parking lot, rather than street parking. (Super convenient!) There are a lot of tables available on the inside which makes it nice for getting in without a wait. The restaurant has a lot of interesting decor elements scattered throughout the vicinity. It feels spacious and comfortable too. Service here isn't particularly different from other places nearby. In fact, it seems like all of the restaurants are very fast and efficient at getting food out. Despite not really being too different from other places, my bun cha gio was enjoyable. The egg rolls were delicious and there was a plentiful amount of veggies amidst the noodle-y goodness. I really appreciated the friendliness of everyone we encountered here. It made for a pleasant experience. I plan on adding Pho Tau Bay to my rotation of restaurants, so next time it won't be so long before I return again. read more
