All of the staff members had a great attitude and made sure my party was having a great experience throughout our whole breakfast. The decor is second to none - authentic Hawaiian pieces, paintings on the wall from the owner and my favorite - a Hawaiian themed Christmas tree! I had the red white and green omelette (since I'm vegetarian) - it was very good! I would have loved to try some of the Hawaiian specials, but they all have meat. The members of my party who ordered these specials raved about them (and so did the staff)! My husband and I are big fans of Hawaiian food. When we go to Hawaii we spend most our time going to restaurants. My family put on quite a few Luaus growing up where we would roast a whole pig in the ground with banana leaves. So, Hawaiian food isn't something new to us. When we heard that there was a place in the Indy serving some of our favorites, we made our way over. For Indy it's a 5 restaurant but outside of Indy it's probably 4. We decided to go lighter than usual. We ordered the Hawaiian plate with shoyu chicken, Mac salad and coconut rice. A side of Portuguese sausage (mild) The luau pork with Hawaiian bread and rice. The shoyu chicken was the winner. It was tender and the flavors paired perfectly with the coconut rice. The Portuguese sausage was tasty as well. The luau pork wasn't our favorite, we both agreed it was missing some depth of flavor, like there wasn't enough of the earthy pull from the banana leaves. The macaroni salad wasn't bad, it wasn't special either. We also ordered POG which is my husband's favorite and it came in a cute tiki glass. My coffee refills came frequently and hit the spot. I definitely am looking forward to coming back and trying more of their island offerings. The grilled pineapple in their egg Benedict's are calling my name! This place is top notch! It's tucked away in a strip mall, but don't be fooled... they have plenty of options. I had the crab cake beneduct which wasnt still on the menu but i saw it on the website and asked and they said they could still do it. They have some nice Hawaiian options including natuve sausages and cocktails. The best part was that the owner came over and created us as new customers and we take for a short time. Then she went and gets other customers. That kind of service and caring really makes a difference when you have so many options to choose from. I was really looking forward to coming to this place as the reviews are so strong, but I must admit I was disappointed. Both my wife and I were expecting much more from the food. I ordered the chicken pesto sandwich, which came on a burger bun, with rubbery chicken and a huge lump of rubbery cheese with a tiny bit of pesto sauce. The fries were nice, but where can you go wrong with fries. My wife was also unhappy with her food too, as it came out cold. At that point we had seen enough so paid up and left. Today I stumbled on a remarkable diamond in the rough, A2Z Cafe. From the outside it is unassuming but as soon as you walk inside you are hit with charm. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, so much so I found myself very comfortable that without realizing it, I had spent over three hours inside just chatting. I had the opportunity to meet the owner and found out why the place had so much warmth; it is truly because of her beautiful kind spirit. Note that her staff also embodies those characteristics; they are than accommodating and they make sure you have what you need and then some. The food is so comforting, truly good for the soul. (Not your waist line however) They spare nothing when it comes to taste, the food is rich and hearty. A2Z is a great little gem north of Indianapolis. Very homey, diner feel. I've never had to wait for a table, even on weekends. The coffee is always good and hot. The food is always good - think eggs and fried potatoes, but more than just run of the mill diner food. The owners are usually there, greeting guests. It was not my first Loco Moco, but it was the best. It's heavy for breakfast, but it is so good. The biscuits and gravy I tried were good, too. I will have to try the Tater Tot Scramble the next time I'm there. My vegan wife had the oatmeal with non-dairy milk. I think it was almond milk. She really enjoyed it. Apparently they had a printer malfunction in the kitchen causing quite the back up, since my waitress communicated this I was giving the benefit of the doubt. I ordered the chicken and waffles and was very impressed. The spicy haberneo honey is extremely spicy, so if you do not like spicy, I would not order the chicken and waffles. The biscuits and gravy are excellent as well. I was a little disappointed with the service though. I asked for a glass of water when the server arrived at our table, and I did not receive it. The food runner who brought out my chicken and waffles brought me the glass of water. This was about 20-25 minutes after I first asked the server for the glass of water. Other than that, the service was OK. The restaurant was not that busy, so there is no reason why I should have not received the glass of water right away. The coffee was excellent, and it is hard to find good coffee at a restaurant these days, so that was a huge plus for me! I would definitely come back here for breakfast or lunch, and I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking to have a good weekend brunch with family or friends. A2Z is absolutely one of our very favorite places on the north side. Gina and Tom are great people, and they have a great thing going here. The food is always stellar, and I have never had anything on the menu that I didn't like. They offer much of the standard brunch fare (pancakes, omelets, potatoes, biscuits & gravy, etc.), but they also have many dishes that are more unique: the tater tot scramble (a fun way to start a morning), the crab cakes benedict (satisfying and flavorful), the A2Z sandwich (pesto & avocado!), lots of great choices. They even offer some Hawaiian dishes which are fantastic... you definitely need to try the Loco Moco, and add some grilled Spam to any of the other dishes! Their lunch plates are also really good, and they have several options that are unique... the Spam-a-roni & cheese is comfort in a bowl, and so is the chili "Mac Doggie". They have really good coffee, especially the "A2Z-style" iced coffee. The atmosphere is also really lovely. Gina, being an artist herself, makes a point to display pieces from various local artists. This is a very nice and cozy place to enjoy breakfast or lunch. It is locally owned and the owners are their daily. If they have never seen you in their place, they will come up to you and introduce themselves and let you know how much they appreciate it. The portion size are very generous and delicious.
