We came here on a weekend evening and there was no one in the restaurant except us and one other solo diner. They do a good amount of takeout. Service was fantastic! The staff was patient and helpful with our food selection. The dosa is a MUST and must eaten hot and fresh! I recently checked out Aaha Indian Cuisine with a friend and oh boy was I impressed! Aaha is located in the Mission conveniently off the 16th street Mission BART line. It's a relatively cozy space, but can seat groups of 4 or so relatively easily. Now the food... My friend and I ordered the chicken 555, lamb vindaloo, eggplant, and roti. The chicken 555 was the star of the show with the sauce having a nice mix of slight sweetness and spiciness. Honestly the dish sort of reminded me of getting some battered and sauced chicken at a Chinese-American restaurant. The chicken had great flavor and was moist. The lamb vindaloo was perfectly saucy and meaty with a generous amount of chunks in the serving platter. Our eggplant dish was also super flavorful and complimented the other items well. The roti had a nice crisp to it and soaked up all of our saucy mains quite well. The service at Aaha was great. Our waiter was attentive and quickly brought out some rice when we requested it. Great spot for Indian food in Mission, with lots of unique options you don't see everywhere. The pistachio curry in particular I have never seen anywhere else, and it was fun to try! It didn't taste too much like pistachio but it went well with the rice & garlic naan. I also really enjoyed the paneer 65 with tons of lime squeezed on top. I never thought lime and paneer would go well together but it works! I also liked how fresh and buttery the garlic naan was. Lovely spot! Came here with a friend who said it was a pretty authentic place. At 6:00 PM on a Wednesday, it was nearly empty. We had a big party of 7 people, and servers were quick and on top of it. We got the Garlic Naan, Chicken 65, Butter Chicken, Palak Paneer, Masala Dosa, Vegetable Samosas, and each got a Mango Lassi. Plenty of food for all of us! Garlic Naan: 4/5, very fluffy and buttery. Great chewy texture. Chicken 65: 4/5, great appetizer! Very crispy, and the small sized pieces make it easy to devour. Butter Chicken: 4/5, large chunks of chicken with good sauce! As informed by some friends, this is a South Indian spot, which is very different from North Indian. So, dishes on their menu that come from South India are fantastic, while traditionally North Indian dishes aren't as stellar. What to get here? Chicken 65! Unless you've been to Bangalore, you may not have heard of this; I certainly hadn't until recently. 65 is for the certain blend of spices. Super yummy, and Aaha knows how to fry up some crispy but super juicy pieces of chicken 65. Grilled fish: Tandoor pomfret. Very flavorful, tender meat. I tend to avoid grilled fish since many tend to make it dry, but this wasn't too dry and the seasoning and sauce on this would make up for any dry meat anyway. BTW the only excellent grilled fish I've had was in Monterey at Maligne if you're ever in the area. Lime soda (sweet or salty) ($5) is super good. Like, fresh limeade soda. No syrupy 7-up here! Try the real thing. Mango Lassi ($4) - solid, good portion. Dosas are served on a huge metal tray, which has great presentation value, though takes up alot of room on the table lol. Dosa was more spongey like Nigerian Injera. Accompanying sauces were just ok. Cheese naan ($3) - I was expecting paneer. This is filled with cheddar cheese, so it's basically an Indian quesadilla. Good on its own while a bit oily, but doesn't go as well with the rest of the Indian fare. Servers are very nice and gracious. Interior looks more like a grab and go, bare bones spot, and location is a block from the 16th/mission Bart spot, so, I mean, you know. District tea is super close, though, so you can be like me and grab some nice hot boba milk tea for dessert. Prices are super reasonable, with decent quantities. Sooo many delivery guys coming in and out of the restaurant (literally, like every 2min)--looks like alot of people are already in the know. One of the best Indian restaurants in the Mission! I've been here a few times and the food has been always consistently delicious. The Vegetable Pakora was very crispy, it's a great snack before starting eating the main dish. Normally I don't order fish in Indian restaurants but wanted to give it try here, do I ordered the Tandoor Pomfret which was surprisingly delicious and the meat was very tender. The Tandoor Chicken was also taste delicious and perfectly cooked. Service was great but sometimes a bit slow. During lunch hours when it wasn't that busy I got full attention from the owner, which was great. This restaurant is located son the 17th Street & Mission and the walk here wasn't feel that pleasant, but as soon as you walked in you feel very welcomed. Aaha is a great option for South Indian cuisine in the Mission. I feel your experience here is somewhat dependent on what you order, and I've tried quite a few of their dishes. Some of my favorites include: Tandoori Pomfret, Masala Fries, Paneer 65, and Malabar Fish Curry. All of these are tasty, cooked to perfection, well seasoned, and consistently fresh. They are also all extremely reasonably priced, ranging from $4 for a literal basket of fries, to $18 for the entire pomfret (it smiles back!). I'm not particularly fond of their biryanis, as I find the meats to often be over cooked (too soft) and over salted. Same for the tandoori meats. The dosas here are also good, but not quite at the level you might find in the South Bay. For what it is, though, they execute well. Come here if you are looking for good bang for your buck and have a hankering for nuanced Indian flavors, balanced spices, and food that is clearly cooked from the heart. read more

Chicken tikka masala was probably my favorite dish but it was really sweet compared other tikka masalas I've had, almost too sweet. Also tried the vijayawada chicken biryani and it was delicious. Good flavors and decent portion size. We tried the bagara baingan and didn't like how they include the top of the eggplants. We had to spit out like three eggplant tops. Otherwise it was pretty solid. Beware, medium spice level is pretty hot. I ate here a few weeks back and haven't been able to stop thinking about it - so much so that I dragged my husband and a new batch of friends back to it this week. The biggest heads up is that it's really challenging to eat here with a nut allergy - we found that out the hard way with the second batch of friends. Only 3 things on the whole menu don't have nuts in the sauce. Out of the nut-free options, the Kadai chicken was the best. The best things on the menu from my perspective were the Channa masala, tikka masala and butter chicken in that order. For naan, I'd recommend the garlic cheese, then garlic, then butter. We also got the French fries one of the times and they were a good little side. I will personally be back here again and again. Beware that some dishes can get quite spicy! Would recommend asking for the mildest spice level if you're touchy about it. read more

One of the best Indian restaurants I've been to in SF! We got the chilli chicken, the Uttapam, the Malabar curry and Paratha. Everything absolutely delivered! The chilli chicken was some of the finest I've had outside of India - excellent flavors and manageable heat (ask them to dial it up if that's you're a chilli head). The Malabar curry was excellent, and the paratha was flaky and delicious. The Uttapam had very authentic South Indian flavors. We went on a Sat evening around 6 pm and there was no wait time! We ordered the Chicken Biryani (Bone-In), Coconut Chicken, Chili Shrimp and Tandoori Pomfret. Although we were seated immediately, the food was slow to arrive. I was most excited about the Tandoori Pomfret as I've never had tandoori fish before and I will say it was the best dish out of the four we ordered! Beware this dish and the food here in general is quite spicy! Plain Dosa - HUGE. the presentation was so fun, and I enjoyed cracking the dosa apart and dipping it in the variety of condiments. there was one singular piece of a chili pepper that I was feeling adventurous and tried eating and it killed me. it was very fun, but so painful. the white yogurt (?) sauce had a coconut-y cool taste that was different from any kind of raita I've had before. Bagara Baingan - bangin'. This was so enjoyable to eat, and I think different from eggplant curries I've had before at other places. Anyway, I thought Aaha is better than other Indian restaurants that I've had in sf, but it's still not as great as my east coast favorites. I got the chicken chettinadu and loved the flavor of the curry and the tenderness of the chicken. I also ordered the kulanmbu eggplant. Its curry sauce wasn't as flavorful as far as spices go, but it was quite spicy. I also ordered an order of garlic naan and rice and it was good!
