    Lentil and veggie soup

Recently a friend and I had made lunch plans for the end of the year (we work together and we don't usually see each other again for months). She recommended Udupi Palace and I'm so glad she did- I've had Indian food before when I lived in LA but not since I moved back to the Bay. I'm pescatarian so a veggie friendly menu that is also budget friendly. WIN WIN! We ended up inviting other colleagues and we were a group of 14 in total on a Monday afternoon. We called ahead of time to make sure they could accommodate us and it was no issue at all. The ambience gives very casual and cozy. The service was 10/10- Jacob was our server and although I didn't ask I almost felt like he could have been the manager or owner. He gave us full attention, made sure our water glasses were full and when I say as soon as we all ordered- the food was coming out piping hot and fresh! I was impressed. Location: It's located in the Mission off Valencia- a short 10 minute walk from the BART station (24th/Mission). Lots of culture all around. I took pics of everyone's food including mine: Some our selections were the paper dosas (which is like a thin like crepe fried up)- they were huge in size...well very long. See the pics A number of people ordered different types of dosa combos, we had veggie byrani and I had the lentil/veggie soup which was perfect on a chilly day. One of the dosas came stuffed with potatoes and another combo had some sort of salsa on top and came with a mini fried donut of sorts. Great variety of options to choose from. I would highly recommend checking this place out for great hospitality, good warm food served with care and a price menu that won't break the bank. I see they have a location in DT Berkeley as well. One other thing to mention- online it does mention if you are part of a large group (over 6 or 8)- they automatically charge gratuity. However, when our receipt came- that was not the case. We assumed it was added in and realized quickly it was not automatic so just check your receipt. ENJOY!

Yum! This is a yummy spot for some authentic vegetarian Indian food. So many dosas to pick from. We got a filled one and next time I would love to try a standard one! The curry was my favorite dish - it was so flavorful. The service was great and food came out quickly. I know this is a popular spot so it can get busy!

Udupi!!!! I absolutely love Udupi and it has a special place in my heart as a South Indian Tamilian. I grew up eating Masala dosa, puri and Chana Bhatura so Udupi had always been a staple when I was craving some good ol' South Indian food. Back when I was at UC Berkeley I used to got to their downtown location but now since moving to SF, I go to the location in the mission and the SF location is definitely tastier! My go to order is the Chana Bhatura (the big puffy thing as my bf likes to call it). It is a large wheat puffy fried bread which is light and fluffy paired with chickpea masala curry, fresh onions, tamarind sauce, mint chutney, mango pickle, and raita. Everything is so perfectly executed. The Bhatura is puffed perfectly and not too oily and the channa masala is packed with flavor and not too spicy. The accompanying chutneys also taste incredibly fresh and just how I recall growing up. Udupi is a happy place for me and definitely one I cannot recommend enough if you are in the Mission district.

Visited on a Friday around 6:30pm restaurant was pretty busy most tables were taken but was greeted by a server who was able to seat us right away which was amazing. Food: Thali Platter - love getting a little taste of everything this came with a piece of crispy nutty papadam, fried bread (I think poori) which was light airy and not greasy, a yellow curry well seasoned not too spicy, green curry with a variety of veggies, red bean curry hearty beans in a lightly seasoned yellow curry base, dal pretty spicy and warming, beet chaat added a touch of sweetness, basmati rice perfectly fluffy, yellow rice, sambar, rita, and carrot halwa such a nice way to finish the meal a little sweet creamy pudding Maysore Masala Dosa combo - so good, perfectly crispy thin dosa stuffed with smashed masala potatoes served with the same dal along with coconut chutney which is cooling and creamy, red chutney a little spicy and tomato forward, green chutney providing a slight cooling herbal flavor Service was good, quick and efficient water was brought to outlet table right when we sat down, was able to place an order pretty quickly and food arrived after a 5-10minute wait. Overall Udupi Palace remains a favorite Indian spot for me. Food was so delicious, great variety all flavorful and delicious. Service was quick and efficient, definitely worth a visit if you are looking for a casual Indian spot for dinner in the Mission.

We stopped at Udupi Palace for a casual dinner in the Mission and ended up loving the bold flavors and yummy carbs here. My boyfriend is vegetarian so we always love all-vegetarian spots and this little hole-in-the-wall South Indian restaurant was a nice surprise. We got the Udupi combo which comes with a dosa entree, idli (a savory rice cake), and medu vada (a crispy lentil fritter) and the saag panner which was more than enough to share between 2 people. First, the dosa was delicious! We got the spiced cauliflower dosa which came with a variety of chutneys. The dosa itself had such a nice fluffy texture and the cauliflower filling was well-seasoned. Loved the spicy and coconut chutneys. The additional carb sides were fun to try and definitely makes for a filling meal. Saag curries are one of my favorite dishes to order at Indian restaurants and the saag paneer here is one of the best I've had, being filling and creamy without feeling too heavy. It comes with rice, chapati and poori to eat with the curry and the chapati in particular was super yummy - flakey and soft without being too oily. It was super nice to dip into the saag paneer. Overall a great spot to homey food and definitely worth a stop if you have vegetarian friends.

Great price! I split a House Curry Dosa ($15.95) with my friend, and it was enough for both of us (though we are on the smaller side). I thought it was tasty, and I liked each of the chutneys it came with. We were a party of 6 and got seated immediately. It wasn't super loud when we went. Service is super friendly, and was willing to let us rearrange tables a little bit to fit our entire party.

Tried a few dishes new to me at Udapi and my new strategy as a single diner is to watch what other diners order and ask my waiter for the name of dishes that look delicious to me on the menu. It's fun to engage knowledgeable staff about great food. I've eaten Udapi's mutter paneer twice now and it is fantastic. The gravy and paneer setup is similar to paneer makhani with the addition of peas. The gravy sauce for the mutter paneer is a different set of flavors from paneer makhani, complex and aromatic unique to itself and the peas make it pop. Literally these dishes taste like they were perfected over millennia by great cooks in the richest culture, and they all literally were. Mind blown. The paper dosa is a showstopper visually: almost two feet long and shaped like a megaphone. The dosa batter is cooked on a large griddle that's very hot and the result is crispy and chewy simultaneously and the perfect vessel for dipping in the chutneys and sambar on the side. Seems like a great appetizer dish to share for a group meal. Sambar is also new to me personally and I love it, the broth is rich and layers deep and wide on the taste buds. It's like the best comfort soup ever. I really enjoy Udapi and hope others are also drawn to flavor-ville here :)

Hot fresh breads! A no frills neighborhood joint, Udupi Palace is my favorite place to grab an accessibly-priced and delicious thali or dosa. Attentive and responsive staff, big portions, fresh, flavorful, and offering some dishes I haven't had at other South Indian/Indian restaurants. It's one of my go-tos when I'm out and about the Valencia corridor. I'm not strictly vegetarian, but you leave feeling like you made your taste buds dance and a hearty portion in your belly. Highly recommend for a low-key, casual, and convenient spot.

This was a solid Indian restaurant place to visit, if ur vegetarian you will love this place as the entire menu is vegetarian! They had great dosas we ordered a ton of food and they were all really good. The only thing I'd say that didn't make this place perfect was the sambar, I felt that it was a little lacking in taste. The inside was clean and nice and there is a lot of room to sit. The servers were extremely nice and helped us with some choices too!

We made it in the nick of time for their breakfast which ends at 11:30. This is a vegetarian restaurant and we had a lot of their uthappam. Everything was so delicious and hearty. Doesn't taste oily or salty and all the chutney & sambhur were good. My favorite was the onion uthappam and the rice (forgot name) with the idly. Food came out quick and our server was nice. The place is on Valencia st which has a lot of restaurants and shops near by. Love the affordability and the quality of the food here

Came here on a weekend night with a few friends and it was pretty lively inside! I've only had dosas a few time, but have really enjoyed them here and in Toronto in the past. We got a special masala dosa (which had potatoes and some veg stuffed in), a thali, and a spring dosa -- and everything was very flavorful! The chutneys also nicely complemented the crispiness and fillingness (not a word lol) of the dosas. I think towards the end it started getting a little too heavy for me but managed to gobble up everything. Service was kind of slow. Would come back and try more!

Still my favorite dosa place in the Bay Area. For the nth time, I ordered the famous Rava Masala Dosa. Now I order it with the potato filling on the side so I could fully enjoy the crispiness of the dosa. My husband ordered the 2 foot paper dosa served with the potatoes on the side as well. It tasted much better than the regular masala dosa. We recently went to India and tried the paper dosa and it was the best I ever had in Mumbai! But thanks Udupi Palace for satisfying my craving tonight!

Great food and decent price . Dosa were great and amazing services where we were welcomed so nicely. Service was fast and ambiance was for normal restaurant . You come here for good food and not for ambience . Parking is tough and you will need to search a lot . Worth the visit and try the dosa

I'm always hunting for spots like this because I have a weakness for those over-the-top, Instagram-worthy desserts that look like diabetes in a dish. Like most places in this genre, A Buttercup is small, modern, and minimalist with limited seating. If you plan to go, aim for off-hours unless you enjoy waiting in line for sugar. The decor is cute and trendy, perfect for photos if that's part of your dessert ritual. As they say, "you eat with your eyes first," and when it comes to presentation, this place definitely gets an A+. The desserts look stunning and set high expectations. Unfortunately, that's where things started to crumble. It's like going to see your favorite artist live. You've watched the videos, memorized the songs, and paid for the experience. But instead of the electric performance you imagined, you get someone lip-syncing and barely connecting with the crowd. That was this place in dessert form. We ordered the Mango Bingsoo on our first visit, and when it arrived, we were surprised by how small the portion was. The guy next to us even looked over and said, "Whatever that is, I'm getting that next time." He shouldn't have. The Bingsoo looked great but was bland, and the "snow" was more chunky ice than soft shave. The Thai Tea Roti was also not what I expected. It came with Thai tea ice cream and sauce alongside a roti that was fried to a crunch. Interesting idea, just not the best execution. The sauce and ice cream needed a stronger Thai tea flavor to balance the crispy roti, and the flavors never quite came together. Overall, A Buttercup nails the aesthetics but misses the flavor. If you're here for the photos, you'll be happy. If you're here for the taste, you'll leave with a full camera roll and an unsatisfied sweet tooth.

The store is larger than it looks with some seating along the sides and back. I opted a small cup of the lychee black tea and auntie Kendra's garden. The lychee black tea was INCREDIBLE, strong, strong tea and fruit flavor, perfectly creamy, and not too sweet. The more memorable of the two, however, was definitely Auntie Kendra. It was a vanilla base with salty plum juice, passion fruit, and preserved lemon peel. The delicate vanilla, the lemon aroma without the sour tang, the floral, exotic passion fruit, and the unexpected punch of salt and earthiness from the plum juice, this is a WHOPPER of a flavor. Every bite allowed me a new appreciation of the layers of flavors in this scoop. While a bit pricy, Garden creamery is on par with the other local ice cream spots in SF and well, the flavors and my enjoyment of them speak for themselves. I will definitely be making more trips out here to try their other flavors!
