Sergei has given me some of the best cuts of my life. Ive never kept it long, but he knows exactly what I need and how to make it last. Nor does he ever pressure me to get a cut sooner than needed. This review is mainly for Max, who is a top notch, super skilled barber (and very nice guy). I came here because in my 30s I wanted to finally sport a beard. Although I grow a lot of facial hair, I just couldn't really figure out how to make it look good on my own at home without a huge amount of time (or skill?) that I don't have. Every time I tried other barber shops there was no real consistency or ability to figure out what worked over time -- so I just never found a reliable hair + beard cut that fit into my life. Enter House of Aanuko and Max. Max is approachable and easy to work with. We have an ongoing conversation about what I want and need out of the cut (eg, need it to work with the mask I wear at work, this part of my haircut sticks out at week 3, etc) and we have progressively modified the cut. He is ridiculously skilled and very precise -- I have never had cuts that are this symmetric, clean, messy in the right way, etc. And the fact that he remembers what happened last time and has concrete suggestions for what to try next is great. To me, this has been well worth the cost (which I initially balked at). Also all the barbers here are skilled enough that when scheduling doesn't work out, someone else is usually available that is also great (Angel gave me a super solid cut too). Overall, highly recommend this place (and Max specifically) for hair + beard. read more

TL;DR: First time customers, be warned. If you're past the grace period--even by a second--expect to pay $50. Do not expect empathy. I was 1 minute past the grace period and was given an alternate barber who gave me a haircut I could've gotten at Great Clips / Supercuts. I scheduled an appointment for 2:00 PM with Josh and drove an hour from Palos Verdes after a close friend--who's a regular here--spoke very highly of him. I was aware of the 15-minute grace period and, although I hit traffic and had trouble finding parking in an unfamiliar area, I checked in through the app at 2:14 PM while just steps away from the shop to respect the grace period. I rushed in right as the clock turned 2:16. As soon as I walked in, Rachel at the front desk told me I was too late for my appointment. She firmly told me that I'd either need to pay a $50 rescheduling fee to book Josh again or see another stylist. What made the experience worse was the way she presented the second option--as if she was doing me a big favor by letting me get my haircut with someone else at a lower cost and saving me from the $50 fee. It didn't feel like customer service--it felt like a transactional take-it-or-leave-it decision with no room for understanding. Although Rachel remained patient in tone, she showed no empathy for my situation. I explained multiple times that I had driven a long way, was unfamiliar with the area, checked in within the grace period, and was literally outside the door before the cutoff. None of that mattered. After repeating my side a few times, she shut down the conversation and said, "I'm not going to explain this further." As a first-time customer, I left feeling completely unwelcome. Brian, the alternative barber who cut my hair, gave me a very average haircut. I've gotten better haircuts at Great Clips for $20. But, he treated me with respect, cared for my needs and patiently explained how to go about styling my hair. I very much respect him for that, but it was not what I needed. I wanted a good haircut. There's a difference between following the rules and actually caring about the people behind them. Rachel may have followed policy, but her lack of empathy and the way she handled the situation made it clear that this shop isn't interested in earning trust from new customers. read more
