Had our monthly car club lunch at Abacus Inn today, about 10 of us, all Seniors. Nice little place with the typical Chinese Restaurant decor. Staff was friendly and attentive. The menu is quite extensive and most of the group tended toward the Lunch Specials, I chose the Vegetable Chow Mein, that way I could add hot mustard mixed with shoyu for some spice. Our meals did not take long to appear, almost all being served at the same time. The Lunch Specials came with a main course dish, a fried vegetable roll and either egg drop or hot/sour soup. Mine, for some reason came with a bowl of rice in addition to the noodles. Everyone seemed happy with their dishes, but the portions were so large that most took some home. My dish: the vegetables were all good, seemed fresh, however the noodles were more like regular spaghetti noodles, not the thin, flat Chinese noodles I was hoping for. Also, the dish was quite moist, a pool of watery liquid at the bottom. It was good, about what I have come to expect with Chinese food in the Phoenix, but certainly not up to standard for this type of food in Hawaii. Many in my group believe this is the best Chinese food in the valley. Abacus Inn is a good value restaurant, you get a lot for your dollar. My large plate of food and rice was about $13, most of the lunch Specials were about the same. I guess I am just tainted by living with so many excellent Chinese places for so many years, but a Good rating is about all I can go for. read more

Really good American Chinese food. Orange chicken/beef is exactly what you'd want or expect, in my experience. The real standout here is the lunch special with soup, amazing house-made and chonky egg roll, with fried wontons. It's so hard to find a real egg roll these days other than a frozen Panda Express stick of mush--look no further. read more

This business was sold & the food now is barely eatable! I tossed out the calamari .. the egg rolls .. im not sure what was inside but filled with weird mush! Egg drop soup with chicken and i think the chicken was one of Bill Gates Cloned ones ugg .. very suspicious to say the least! There was only a few tables inside which gave a very creepy feel! Ugh, food is....pretty bad. Nothing advertised as spicy is actually spicy at all, everything is too sweet, food is over fried. We ordered one of the family meals. We did like the beef on the pupu platter. Otherwise, even the fried rice was just not good. Their cocktails were poor as well. I'm not coming back. Service was good, and the restaurant itself was cute and classic, but I can't imagine being able to overcome the food. Oh, and the fortune cookies are lame NAU advertisements. So weird. read more

This place is close by, and haven't gone since the change in ownership. Don't bother. Two entrees, Mongolian Beef and Shrimp with Lobster sauce. Now I've seen Mongolian Beef with brown sauce and consisting of 2/3 onions. I've never seen Shrimp with Lobster Sauce in a brown sauce and loaded up with 2/3 onions before. Might as well have been labeled Beef in Onion Sauce and Shrimp in Onion Sauce. Won't be back until the next change in ownership. read more

I was excited to try this place. Little hole in the walls are my jam and tend to be the most magical places. NOT THIS PLACE. Ordered pot stickers for an appetizer, almost no taster. For main I ordered szechuan chicken, spicy, NO FLAVOR, at all and they tried to give me beef. Rice was over cooked. The egg drop soup has chicken in it, which caught me and my fiancé off hard. This is probably the only thing worth eating here. Also food comes out on rounds, not all at once. Which is fine it's just weird to have your plate see two other tables get their plates and your group finally gets their plate again. Just FYI. read more

In 1999 the Arizona Republic voted Abacus Inn Best Chinese in the Valley. That is sad because most Chinese food is better. This is a small neighborhood restaurant located in an Arrowhead Strip Mall. One thing I used to like about this restaurant was the hot tea and fried noodle service that was served to us like the same as from ALL the American/Chinese Restaurants used to do back east. The complimentary noodles are no more but they do still serve you a complimentary pot of hot tea. I thought I had a fond memory of the Sizzling Rice with Chicken Dish so I tried it again. The best part of this dish was the rice. Only an expert cook can get the pan at the just right heat and pop the rice and pass it so someone to serve it sizzling. I do have to say the rice was very good and had texture and more flavor than rice normally has. Most of the vegetables on my plate were fresh and crisp and some were from frozen like the peas and tiny square cuts of carrot. I don't know what quality the chicken was and some of the white meat was tender and some of the white meat was like chewing a tire. It was just like that LAST chicken I purchased from WinCo. Some of it good and some of it weird and gross like rigor mortis already set in. I do like sweets...I am a sweet eater but the sauce was too sweet for me and lacked flavors The sauce tasted mostly just sweet and soy sauce. My husband had the Spicy Sliced Beef. All the beef was tender in his dish and the vegetables were fresh and tender crisp but that sauce was the same as mine very sweet but with a little more flavor. So started out with fried shrimp and the amount of shrimp was very generous for an appetizer. However, the shrimp was somewhat rubbery some of the portions were a whole lot more breaded than shrimp. The main course was shrimp cashew with garlic sauce and peas and carrots. I'm definitely not a fan of peas or carrots and what show does inquired about what vegetables came with it and skipped over this but the shrimp was really good as well as the white garlic sauce so no complaints on that port and there was a generous amount of cashews as well okay. We've given them multiple chances but every time they mess up the order. When we call in an order, it is always missing something. When we order online, twice they "lost" the order and when we've dined in, the food is always out slow. Worse, management has never once apologized for the many, MANY mistakes. Ordered from Uber Eats and I was so impressed with the packaging for to-go orders. Everything was stacked so neatly. We ordered the house fried rice, crab rangoon, honey walnut shrimp, and general tsos chicken. Everything was so good. They do the breading a little differently, so you don't get a mouthful of breading covered in sauce. The meat was good. I particularly liked having less breading. Just one $10 entree could've fed both my husband and me, so I felt like it was reasonably priced. This is classic Americanized Chinese food if you need a takeout meal, but it is done so much better than the chains and other takeout Chinese restaurants I've been to. We got our food to go. The workers were very polite. Our total was about $44. Hot & Sour Soup-It was not good. It tasted almost sweet, like they used a sweet chili sauce to make it spicy. I'm sure the carrots & peas could also have contributed to the sweetness. It didn't taste sour at all. I miss the spicy sour flavor I was expecting. I will not get this again. Crispy calamari-it was still kind of crisp when we got home, so it must be really great when you get it in the restaurant. It came with some sweet & sour sauce that was separated. That was mildly off putting. However, I enjoyed the calamari. The strips were well cooked, not over cooked. I would get that again. Beef & broccoli-Basic yes, but my kids like it. It was pretty average but had more beef than broccoli, which normally I don't see. Shrimp & scallops in garlic sauce-this was a mild sauce. There wasn't a whole lot of flavor, but it wasn't bad. It did allow for the flavors of the shrimp & scallop to show through. It was only shrimps & scallops. I enjoyed it and would probably get it again. 3 stars were because I liked the calamari and the shrimp/scallop dish, but the soup was probably one of the worst hot & sour soups I've ever had. read more
