Someone told me that this was their favorite Chinese place so I decided to order from here. Definitely pretty big portions. I just couldn't get behind the smell and the distinct taste of the garlic scallop and shrimp. The vegetables had very distinct flavor that I couldn't stand for some reason. I door dashed some food from here on a Saturday night and it was INCREDIBLE!!!! The food arrived promptly and hot too. We ordered the BBQ ribs, eggs rolls, chicken fried rice and orange chicken with a side of chow mein. Wouldn't recommend it. My partner got me a chicken fried rice delivered. Idk if it is better to eat in the shop but It was very underwhelming. The rice had little to no flavor except maybe hint of oil. The chicken was super white. I ended up just refrying it and adding soysauce, oyster sauce, green onion, sesame oil. Literally no flavor. Ordered it cause I didn't feel good so I didn't want to cook but ended up cooking anyways to make it decent. read more

Not recommended and not coming back!! The food was mediocre at best. I asked for extra mushrooms and didn't think to ask if they were fresh. The server said there would be an extra cost and I said ok. When the dish came, it was loaded with slimy canned mushrooms. I also asked for no MSG and vegetarian and the sauce is virtually non-existent and what is there is pretty tasteless. So me and my friends did a "family" dinner tonight and got 4 orders of fried wonton. Normally these have at least a cream cheese filling or something, but not at Abacus. It's only the wonton crust. This has been our neighborhood go to for awhile. I keep trying others and come back to Abacus as the portions are generous and the food tastes fresh and not overdone/greasy, etc. I have to give them a shout out for saving the day on Christmas as I went through a very unfortunate experience with another restaurant and Abacus saved us. The restaurant matched the ordinary and tired strip mall's vibe well. Not many choices for someone sensitive to MSG. Waiter seemed disinterested in our experience as never checked if wanted a soda pop refill which I would have happily taken because we were there chatting a while. Sweet and Sour Pork was a bit tough cubes but okay, and oddly the rice was mediocre with crunchy dry pieces, and I usually love rice. Not possible to get my favorite Kung Pao chicken and shrimp here because they use MSG in that sauce. This was worst tasting Chinese Food I have had. Fried Rice was not all the way cooked, 2 big dark brown rice balls in the lunch special which looked like a huge ice cream scooper was used. Never saw fried rice added to a dish to take out. Normally it would be in a separate box like a Chinese White box. Normally rice has some slick oil on it which makes it taste good not a dry ball of rice. Then it was all packaged into a small foam box which was broken where you could not close box together therefore it would not close shut so then it was dumped in the bag just carrying to car. Rice all over the food. Chow Mein was also terrible where vegetables had strange flavor and the broccoli pieces were too huge to eat. Needed to cut broccoli so the kids would not choke. I should of returned to restaurant to show them what was going on. Orange Chicken had too much sauce on it. Egg roll had a strange taste inside in which you could not eat due to the mush taste to it. $40 is an expensive lunch which you could barely eat. Never again will I order food from this place. Panda Express is much better and cheaper!. I also order from another location called Abacus Inn on 59th 5 years ago and they were also terrible. read more

Found this place after our old fave closed down. Food is absolutely fresh, great flavor and cooked to perfection. NOT dry, or overcooked like so many others. The service is always great. I went with the Happy Family entree which is supposed to be chock full of beef, chicken, shrimp and scallops with mixed vegetables. Lots and lots and lots of carrots and leeks and baby corn. A couple thinly sliced pieces of beef, some tiny minced pieces of chicken, exactly two shrimp and I've no idea what happened to the scallops. Disappointing to say the least. The rice was hot. I wasn't impressed with the food at all. I was disappointed. Wish the food was better. The Abacus Inn on 59th Ave and 101 is really bad. It used to be one of my favorites but new owners bought it and it's terrible which is really sad. A friend of mi e went to the 59th Ave location and there was a cockroach crawling across her table and her husband had a piece of metal in his food. It's a bummer. read more

The only reason I stopped here was because Hing Loon on Glendale is temporarily closed. I ordered lemon chicken & pork fried rice to go from this place. I'm not a fan. I may come back one day and try something else. The meat used in the lemon chicken did not taste like chicken. The lemon sauce tasted really processed, maybe from a powder or can. The pork fried rice was fine, but this is just a matter or preference. The portions at Hing Loon are twice double the size for the same price. Also, this place uses plain pork whereas Hing Loon uses char siu. The lobby is clean, though. The service is also fast. They also have a rewards program. I do like that this place has an actual formal dining area, because Hing Loon has folding chairs and tables in their spot. read more

We have dined at Abacus for many years. We have never had a bad meal there. The lunch menu is extensive and offers a choice of soup, your entre choice, rice, a crab puff, an egg roll and most often, but not every time, a complimentary banana/honey puff as a parting dessert. The hot and sour soup is always our favorite. The Thai Volcano Beef is my favorite entre. The price for this lunch meal is very reasonable. My only complaint is that on holidays, or for dinner, even though the price increases, the soup, the crab puff, the egg roll and the banana/honey dessert do not come with the meal. Yes, you get more rice and the entre is a larger serving, but the whole experience is diminished. My New Year's resolution is to only eat there during lunch and never on holidays. read more

Very old school restaurant that has been at this location for years. Dine in is great with the pupu platter served on open flame which our grandkids love. My wife and I live near this place and we always love their food. However, after I put in a takeout order Saturday night and brought it home, my wife complained that the fried shrimp (she got the sweet and sour shrimp) had more breading than meat. She gave it to me because she couldn't eat the rest of it and she only enjoyed her chow mein. Drove the 10 minutes home, it's takeout or delivery only and our food was still piping hot, packed in great plastic container and our order was correct!
