For our wedding anniversary, we traveled across the river to Annarellas Ristorante on 276 Malden…read moreTurnpike in Saugerties We arrived early as we were traveling about an hour away and we're aware there were many detours as the Malden Bridge is undergoing repairs.  I'd read about Annarellas prior to this, and based on glowing reviews chose this to mark 50 years together, 39 as husband and wife...long engagement! We were not disappointed. We were seated promptly by our lovely hostess, and Shaun immediately came over to recite specials and to take our orders. He was attentive and we knew we were in good hands! We started with the Dr. Fox Cocktail: Angostura bitters, Bulleit Rye, Apple Liqueur, Dry Curacao, and Sweet Vermouth, which was perfect. It was accompanied by a hummus trio to spread on the bread. There was also a delicious foccacio. Next we were served a perfect salad, delicately dressed, and what made the salad so delightful was that the lettuce was torn into manageable pieces. A pet peeve of mine is large lettuce leaves that are difficult to wrangle, and this was not the case here. There were also tiny bits of cauliflower that gave the salad a nice texture and crunch.  I had the Stuffed Artichoke and my husband had Shrimp Gamberi on an Arugula salad. Both were substantial and beautifully seasoned. We had two glasses of an Argentine Tomero Malbec. It was a generous pour. For the main course, I had Polla al Limone (Lemon Chicken) over spinach. A simple dish done well. My husband had the Halibut special, a classic Mediterranean baked halibut with tomatoes, capers, and olives. So good that he finished it all...a rarity for him. (The halibut was pricey and it would be appreciated if the price was mentioned when the specials were gone over. Perhaps we should have asked.) We finished with a Sorbetto al Lampone, a tart raspberry sorbet in a dark chocolate shell and sliced.  And as we left, our sweet hostess brought over Lucianno, the most adorable puppy, to send us off with puppy kisses! We definitely will be back...especially for the wild boar ragu over pappadelles. One nitpicking observation. The entrance to the restaurant was a tad shabby. We mistook it for the service entrance. It needs to be spruced up to match the superb food inside!

I attempted to order a drink twice-- they had neither in stock-- before getting a Diet Coke. The big area of opportunity here is the food. My husband ordered the scallop risotto, which came... wet. It looked like rice swimming in water-- the flavor was similar, unfortunately. The cook on the scallops ranged widely in the dish. I ordered the salmon-- the cook on the salmon was nice but the quinoa was inedible, as were the veggies it was served with. Our meal was late and it felt like the food was held over from earlier preparations. We got the bread pudding, which was fine-- but the proportion of ice cream to pudding ratio was way off. The restaurant has so much potential but the food is the big problem to solve for, in my opinion.

Mind you, about 90% of the restaurant was empty. We expected something like, "No problem, give us a moment to clean it off." We're very easygoing and would have completely understood waiting a few minutes. Instead, that interaction set the tone for the rest of the meal. We even pitched in to help the bussing staff. When our waitress finally returned, she immediately said, "Oh, you don't have menus? You forgot them. I know I already gave them to you along with your place settings." Apparently it was a set-your-own-table experience. At that point, it almost felt like we were expected to bring our own service as well. The food quality was underwhelming--We've had better charcuterie on a plane--especially considering the prices. Several ingredients that were listed as part of the dishes were missing. When we asked the busser about it, she said she would check with the kitchen, but she never returned with an answer or any follow-up. Honestly, we would have expected the server to check back regardless, but other than taking our initial order, she never returned to our table, even when we tried to wave her over. So yes no one came back after our food was served to ask how everything was, whether we needed anything, or to address the missing ingredients. Once our order was delivered, we were completely forgotten. Good service means checking on your guests, addressing concerns, and making sure they're enjoying their meal. None of that happened during our visit. When we finally approached the manager, the first response was, "Well, did you eat any of the food?" Yes--we each had a couple of bites of the kale Caesar because we were starving, despite it being served without the advertised pork belly, which was the main ingredient. We had already tried to address our concerns in real time, but no one ever followed up. We're far from people who leave negative reviews. In fact, we think this is only the second bad restaurant review we've ever written. The experience was simply that disappointing. Overall, the combination of rude service, poor management, disappointing food quality, missing ingredients, and a complete lack of follow-through made for an incredibly frustrating dining experience. Unfortunately, we can't recommend this restaurant, and we won't be returning. The view is absolutely gorgeous, but you're better off grabbing a sandwich somewhere else and enjoying it from the nearby bridge.

Our 1-year-old was completely entertained by the colorful lizard decorations on the ceiling and the fish tank behind the bar--dinner and a show! Service The service was exceptional. The staff went out of their way to make our family comfortable, and the extra napkins, crayons, and thoughtful attention did not go unnoticed. Food Traveling with a toddler often means settling for chicken fingers and fries, but not here. Our little one happily sampled a variety of dishes, especially the yellow rice and guacamole. Despite the high average, the lowest reviews were shown to me first. Even though it was about half an hour out of the way, we agreed to give it a shot. I called to make a reservation only 50 minutes in advance and the guy on the line was friendly and happy to accommodate. Several reviews said this place is "nothing to look at", which we found really funny as we sat in paradise on the patio. Beautiful day. Quiet atmosphere. It was cute on the inside, too. All to say we found this perplexing. I normally don't ask to sit outside for fear of being forgotten (wait staff get busy and it's easy to miss tables that are out of your line of sight) but we were checked on consistently and back on the road within an hour. And also, what matters most: The food was really good. And they cooked my steak the way I asked. Gonna go out on a limb here and say the negative reviews are either greatly exaggerated or the management has since addressed the issues. This was a highlight for us on an already great trip.

I got 2 tacos ( Tue/Thur chicken, beef, al pastor and chorizo tacos are $2.50 each) and he got enchiladas which come with rice and beans. Everything came out to less than $20. My boyfriend enjoyed the enchiladas and my tacos were good. I got an al pastor and a chorizo. The chorizo was a bit dry but flavorful. The al pastor was juicy and delicious. Both came with double corn tortillas, onion, cilantro and a radish slice and a chipotle sauce. When we asked if the flan had any flour or wheat the cashier asked the chef and confirmed it didn't but the chocflan did (chocolate cake on the bottom and flan on top). When we got home and unpacked the take out we saw that the woman at the counter added a note to his food confirming that the enchilada sauce and extra chipotle sauce didn't have wheat. It was such a sweet thing to do and showed that they care about their customers. Definitely will be ordering from there again.
