Stopped here one morning on my way to San Antonio for a work project and it's one of those really sweet quaint country. Breakfast diner places the staff was very sweet. Very nice. Great customer service. The food is exactly what you would expect it was like eating at grandmas's house. I had biscuits and gravy with eggs and hashbrowns. Everything was delicious. Another family run business I like to support. I've been going here for 15 years. It's a nice diner with a wide selection of food. I usually go for break or lunch. I like the eggs Benedict and their chicken fried steak and eggs. Also, they serve homemade cinnamon rolls on the weekend and it's impossible not to eat one. Leaving out of San Antonio and headed into Austin did a Yelp search and ran across Abel's Diner and decided to stop in for lunch. The place was packed so the wait was no more than :10 minutes. The food was delicious! We had the kids chicken strips, grilled chicken with green beans, mashed potatoes and brown gravy plus the fried shrimp, beans and green beans. Love that meal comes with a side salad or soup. I would make a few recommendations: - putting cooked bacon in the green beans instead of the tomato's - extending the breakfast hours into brunch hours (maybe can even charge a little extra after a certain time) Overall great dinner very friendly staff, we will be returning again. read more

RIP Ablel's Diner. Sabrina and I had breakfast there today at about 9:50,since she loved their eggs Benedict. She said it was terrible. The egg was way over cooked, almost rubbery, and the hollandaise sauce was thin and runny. We used to have to wait for a table, especially on Fridays. We had no wait today, and it was definitely not busy when we left No one waiting when we left either. She said the egg had a fishy taste. My breakfast taco was fine, but it's almost impossible to screw up bacon cheese and a scrambled egg. Time to find a new breakfast place with a decent eggs Benedict read more

11/02/22 Pretty good diner. Located at IH35N and 3009 in the corner of a strip mall. Be on the lookout or you'll miss it. Exit at 3009, go left and come back around on the IH35S access road. It's right there, about half a block down. Anyway, the Wednesday special was beef tips and rice with a choice of one side husband had this. He ate it all. I had the chicken fried steak with choice of two sides. Fries and sliced tomatoes for me. The rolls served are right out of the oven and buttered. Soft and delicious. Service was just right. Abel's Diner was okay, but honestly underwhelming. The food options were pretty limited, and what we ordered came out on the bland side--nothing really stood out in terms of flavor. More specifically, We ordered plates with chicken and the chicken was chewy and the breading just slidesoff I'd say the best part of the meals were the fries. I was also surprised that breakfast ends right at 12:00 sharp, which feels unusual for a diner, and they don't make exceptions. Ive been seeing this restaurant and noticed that its fairly busy for breakfast on weekends, so we decided to drop in and get some dinner on a random Tuesday evening. It was not very busy, so we were sat down quickly. Waitress was very friendly and quick to help us with whatever we needed. She gave us some recommendations and we went with them. We ordered the chicken fried steak with onion rings and mashed potatoes and the chicken monterey with a baked potato and tomato slices. Food came out fairly quick and freshly made. The chicken was good, however something with the baked potato was off. I believe the sour cream was not right. The chicken fried steak was very bland, along with the onion rings and mashed potatoes. Service left everything to be desired. Word of advice, do not enter this establishment from 11:00am to 12 noon. You will be met with staff telling you what you are allowed to order based on how disorganized the kitchen is at the moment. To my misfortune, my party showed up at 10:55am and greeted with being seated within 5 minutes. We were then told that we could not sit at the table the host seated us at, and were returned back to the waiting area where we waited for another 35 minutes before being seated again. Before being seated again, we were asked by someone from the kitchen if we would be getting lunch or breakfast as breakfast stopped being served at 11am. I replied that I would be getting lunch and my fiancé would be getting breakfast. We were told that she had to order breakfast right this second to get the order in. We were then finally seated at 11:35am, then were greeted by our server. When we began to order, she informed us that I could not order lunch if someone at my table was ordering breakfast. In addition if I did decide to order lunch, I would receive my food at noon, the earliest. After spending 45 minutes in the restaurant, with no meal in site, we decided to get up and leave. Nice place. Food was good. On the blander side of good. Seated after about 20 minutes as it was pretty busy at around 10 am on Saturday morning. Service was very friendly. Kept our drinks full. Never had to wait for more drinks. Have crayons to our kiddo. The ingredients were fresh. Bacon was the tastiest and only think with flavor. Potatoes were hard and dry. Could use more flavor. Similar lack to flavor for the Gravy, but the biscuits were fresh, soft. Over all not a bad experience, I'll continue to try new places before i settle on a regular spot in this area. read more

One of my favorite little places to go. I like the pork cutlet with cucumber salad and the bread pudding for dessert. The food is nicely consistent. Donna is so sweet and even remembers my order. The decor is classic and they play the oldies, so it feels very pleasant and friendly. Sometimes the owner comes out from the kitchen to say hello. Keep your eye out for the goose statue to see what outfit they have it in. read more

Stopped in for the Friday night special. The fish was excellent, cooked the way it is supposed to be. I was well taken care of as usual. My only complaint was the way the coleslaw is served. The slaw was very good, but hard to get off of the lettuce leaf it was served on. Will return again for that special. read more

So, what do you do for lunch when traveling IH-35 just outside San Antonio? My uncle and I decided to try a diner. This is Abel's diner. The ratings were decent. We arrived around 1:15 pm on a Tuesday. It was after the normal lunch rush, but since this is Spring Break in Texas, I was not surprised that it was pretty full. The seats along the wall have a plexiglass sheet to separate and keep any COVID germs at bay. We got the corner seat along the wall toward the back (closer to the restroom- I am with an 80-year old so you have to notice these things). We were seated immediately and our waitress came by soon after and was very friendly. The Special on Tuesday includes a Pork Cutlet with corn and white rice. My uncle ordered that. I decided to try the Chicken Fried Steak (CFS) with mashed potatoes and spinach. We waited as the hustle and bustle of the diner continued. The ambiance is normal. The crowd was a mix of families, mature patrons, and folks on a lunch break. The lunch came in about 10 minutes. The food servings were decent. They got our sides mixed up. My spinach was on his plate and I got black eyed peas. So, I retrieved the spinach, she brought a side of corn and this review gets a bonus commentary on black eyed peas. The CFS was good. It was thin and the breading was loose which I prefer. The white gravy was not overpowering and the mashed potatoes were good. The food temp was appropriate since sometimes food sits under a heat lamp and get cool waiting for the whole order to be completely prepared. Spinach was fine and the black eyed peas tasted like, well, black eyed peas. The waitress checked on us about 10 minutes after serving which was good service. My uncle cleaned his plate so I am assuming his dish worked for him, too. All in all, this is a great stop for some diner comfort food. No Mel, no Flo, and no nonsense. I remember the old days when people were lined up out the door waiting to cram into the old Abel's diner . The rolls were delicious and you would eagerly wait for them to be delivered to your table. Abel himself would come by your table greet you and always made you feel welcome. Abel's has lost its charm and the food has declined. It seems like no one cares. The portions have diminished and we have walked away feeling hungry . The mash potatoes are dry and a microscopic portion. The rolls are old and not even edible. The sandwich buns are getting smaller and smaller. What happened to the French silk pie? The prices have gone up and the food has gone down. Our last two visits have been a disappointment. Tried opening the door at 1033 - it wouldn't open. I came back after 10 min as their hours are confusing (says bfast is until 1030 but open until 8pm). I walked in and 8 employees looked at me and I was told there will be a wait as they convert from bfast to lunch which started at 11. The worst part is the employee said she saw me outside the door as I tried to open it. Sooooo you saw me and didn't open the door? Anyway, sub-par service and food looked mid at best. With that said, having a 30 min break makes no sense...best of luck, there are too many options to not have amazing service. read more

Unbelievable how good this place is! We were in the area because we had to go to Ikea and just googled restaurants near us. The ambiance is of your good old dinner, and one of the best meals we've had in a long time! It's just comfy and delicious! They brought us some warm delicious rolls right when they sat us. I ordered the chicken fried steak (the BEST I've had in San Antonio), with their delicious cucumber salad on the side (it's not on the menu, I overheard the table next to us and went for it, and I'm glad I did!). My husband ordered the peppered steak with a side of shrimp. His meal was incredible too. Service was amazing, fast, efficient. Best of all, it was like 35 bucks. We'll be back for sure!!! read more
