I like a medium rare steak, not a rare hamburger steak. Service was subpar as my glass of sweat tea sat empty the majority of my meal. Fortunately had a glass of water to wash down my meal. Everytime I drive by this place there is a line in the morning. Finally got to try Abel's with the family this morning and now I know why people are willing to wait. Their customer service is amazing. Our waitress knew customer's name like they have been friends forever. Reasonable prices for the meal. I had their Abel's breakfast and it was better than average and it came out fast too. From the time we put our name on the waiting list till the time I had my meal was about 30 minutes. Not bad. As I was coming back from San Antonio, I noticed I was entering Schertz and recalled that there's a Diner nearby. The place in question is a wonderful and staple in the neighborhood, it's "Abel's Diner". This place is wonderful the food is amazing the breakfast is by far one of the best in town. But today it was lunch time, so I wanted to try if the lunch is as good as their breakfast. And I wasn't disappointed, but let me go to the beginning. As you walk in you see a good amount of seating even for somewhat larger groups, the hostess takes you to your seat and then they take your drink order. The people that are taking and bringing your meal are extremely helpful and all around wonderful people. For my meal I ordered the "Homestyle Hamburger" with fries as my side. I'm not going to lie, but at first glance it looked odd, being on what appears a hoagie bun. But don't be fooled, it was absolutely delicious I had cheese and bacon to the hamburger and it brought it to next level. Abel's has a pretty good reputation to those who frequent this diner. I dined for lunch here for the fourth time yesterday with friends who were trying it for their first time. It's a quaint little place tucked away in the corner of a strip center in Schertz, Texas just outside of San Antonio city limits. The service is friendly and this day we were the only ones eating at 2:00pm on a Monday. One of their specials was a chicken fried steak which we were not going to pass up. However, the four of us know our chicken fried steaks and where to go for the best. Abel's doesn't make the list. The steak was tough and needed to be tenderized. And the batter didn't stick to the steak. The flavor was okay, the mashed potatoes were good, and the gravy was good. We all had the mixed veggies and they were mushy. We did have desert and the cherry pie and bread pudding were excellent. We'll try Abel's again and order something different. read more

It had been awhile since we've been here and after the original owners turned the business over to their daughters. We wondered if the food and service would deteriorate as it often does when original owners retire or sell. We were glad that nothing went down hill. I had the western omelette which had tomatoes, ham, cheese peppers and onions. The omelette was perfectly prepared. Not overcooked like some places tend to do with omelettes but fluffy and just the right ratio of ingredients! I also tried their pancakes which in the past were always fluffy and very good - they didn't disappoint - perfect! The service was also very good. My server was prompt and friendly. I honestly might have to say that the food and service have actually even gotten better. I've tried several different dishes from this restaurant and to me they're just mediocre. I had the eggs Benedict and the hollandaise sauce didn't taste like hollandaise sauce. It had an off taste to it. When we got there about 10:20 AM my party ordered breakfast and I wanted to order off the lunch menu but was told I had to wait until 11:15 AM so I confirmed it with the cashier as we were leaving the restaurant . You cannot order between 10:30 AM and 11:15 AM off the menu because they're changing from the breakfast menu to the lunch menu . For a person that doesn't like breakfast this was kind of a red flag for me. The biscuits are homemade and good. The gravy is ok but all the other dishes that I've had are mediocre what I do recommend is the homemade cinnamon rolls with a cup of coffee. read more

Great, old-time spot for some classic diner fare. Been here for both breakfast and lunch, everything was great both times. Definitely recommend the club sandwich, it was large and packed with meat and veg, and the bacon was super crisp, just the way it should be. The waitresses are all very nice, and everyone seems like they enjoy working there, which is a rarity these days. Abel himself is often on site, either cooking up a storm in the back or walking around and checking on the guests, which is an awesome thing to see in an owner. I had really high hopes walking into Abel's Diner. I looked at the menu online and saw that it was identical to the menu back in my hometown at the local diner. They even ran two daily lunch specials, just like the restaurant back home did. I walked inside to ask about employment opportunities. I asked "Hello, are you all hiring for servers?" The woman responded "Chili's is!!" I paused to see if she was going to answer my question. She did not, so I asked it again. "Are you guys hiring for servers?" Another woman behind the counter said "you can just take an application." And I was on my way out the door. It seems if you're not a familiar face around here, they don't care to speak to you. Went to Abel's for breakfast this weekend. Total score! The waitress seated us quickly and got our drink order. When she delivered the drinks she asked if we would like a cinnamon roll for the table. OMG, it was fabulous! We had eggs Benedict, chicken fried steak and a 2 egg breakfast. Everything was tasty and served hot. The entire staff is friendly and efficient. Grabbed breakfast with family on a Saturday morning. The wait was only 10-15 minutes, so we did not mind waiting. One complaint about service, then I'll rave about the food. The hostess asked how many, I told her "3 adults, 2 high chairs" - so she corrected me and said "So, 5?" I said "Yes" When my name was called, I thought they were calling another party because the hostess said "Nicole for 3" - she looked right at me so I corrected her and said "3 adults, 2 high chairs, 5 total" - another employee seemed annoyed with the hostess and told me they would get it taken care of. They had to scramble to get us a table because the head count was wrong. When we sat down, there were no high chairs and I went to grab them myself - once I grabbed them the hostess told me "I got it " and took over. We also noticed a couple families leave before their names were called. The service on the front end was not the greatest. However, once we sat down, our waitress was wonderful and the food was so delicious. We enjoyed every bit of the cinnamon roll (shared by the table) and everyone was doting on my kids - it was great. We really enjoyed our food, I wanted to try a bit of everything. Another family run business I like to support. I've been going here for 15 years. It's a nice diner with a wide selection of food. I usually go for break or lunch. RIP Ablel's Diner. Sabrina and I had breakfast there today at about 9:50,since she loved their eggs Benedict. She said it was terrible. The egg was way over cooked, almost rubbery, and the hollandaise sauce was thin and runny. We used to have to wait for a table, especially on Fridays. We had no wait today, and it was definitely not busy when we left No one waiting when we left either. She said the egg had a fishy taste. Leaving out of San Antonio and headed into Austin did a Yelp search and ran across Abel's Diner and decided to stop in for lunch. The place was packed so the wait was no more than :10 minutes. The food was delicious! We had the kids chicken strips, grilled chicken with green beans, mashed potatoes and brown gravy plus the fried shrimp, beans and green beans. Love that meal comes with a side salad or soup. I would make a few recommendations: - putting cooked bacon in the green beans instead of the tomato's - extending the breakfast hours into brunch hours (maybe can even charge a little extra after a certain time) Overall great dinner very friendly staff, we will be returning again. read more

Abel's Diner was okay, but honestly underwhelming. The food options were pretty limited, and what we ordered came out on the bland side--nothing really stood out in terms of flavor. More specifically, We ordered plates with chicken and the chicken was chewy and the breading just slidesoff I'd say the best part of the meals were the fries. I was also surprised that breakfast ends right at 12:00 sharp, which feels unusual for a diner, and they don't make exceptions.
