Two years ago, my BF and I escaped here for a birthday weekend retreat! They had a nice $99/night summer special. Not sure if this rate is current, but I would still ask. The living room was cozy, but we never got a chance to hang out in it -- due to guests already lounging in the space. Be advised that Tom likes to hang out and play on the desktop computer at the foot of the stairs (solitaire is his favorite) -- so don't be surprised. Haha. The hallway fridge (opposite from the living room) was stocked with beer, wine, and soda -- an awesome gesture of hospitality for us tired folks after 6 hours of driving! We stayed in the Foxglove room. The walls were painted a dark, Christmas-tree green and the emergency map was drawn out in Sharpie -- it felt off and the fact that the map was drawn in marker was sketchy. The TV was mounted in the top corner of the room, with a DVD player that didn't work. There was also a bear stuffed animal sitting on the heater unit by the window -- cute, but a little creepy. Unfortunately, the wireless signal in the room wasn't great -- had to go downstairs to get access. One of my favorite aspects of our stay was the 7am coffee that Tom would bring up -- really warm-heartening. Tom stays in a room downstairs, back by the kitchen -- so it's nice to have someone always there. He has a gruff personality, but he's happiest in the kitchen, whipping up delicious food in his silly pants (with patterns such as multi-colored chili peppers). Michele wasn't too friendly and kept mostly to herself. I wish she had attempted to socialize more with us and our fellow house-mates. The dining room was lovely -- the morning light streaming in through the windows is enough to make you sigh happily as you sip on your steaming coffee. There's a little sticker or token on the surface of the glass door in the dining room. I asked Michele about it, and she said that they once had a visitor run into the door -- so this is why it's there. I really appreciated that there were some two additional tables besides the communal table. Tom was an AMAZING chef -- food was gourmet and plentiful! He also is more than happy to answer any questions about the food or cooking in general -- it is his passion. Best part of this B&B was the large porch with ample seating and the gorgeous grounds. Also, Downtown Asheville is not even a mile away -- so you won't have to travel far to grab some grub or a cold one. All and all, we really enjoyed the food and grounds, but we won't be back unless there are interior improvements (room furnishings, etc). ***Their site could also use some updating... What a find! We booked the Aberdeen last minute on a weekend where accommodates were sold out at many places around town. I'm so glad we didn't get a run-of-the-mill hotel, because this inn made our time in Asheville so much more special. It's like staying at the home of a friend who has a great house in a great part of town. We met Tom only, who is the resident chef. His personality is a bit coarse at first - especially if you're expecting that average hotel hospitality fake smiles and whatnot. But know that he's actually very friendly and genuine. We are plant-based eaters and he made sure we had the full, personalized breakfast experience that everyone else had. Even the cookies left in the hallway all day were vegan (and delicious)! For the price, which they were running a "summer special" for 99$/night, it was worth it. The house was pretty. It had a wrap around veranda with lovely comfortable seating. There was a back deck with a place to socialize and or relax as well. The rooms were clean and up kept well. And it was really easy to find and seriously only a mile North of Asheville downtown. The breakfasts were definitely better than and all you can eat breakfast buffet at chain hotels. Yes, here is the but, we got what we paid for. My friend and I are coffee drinkers. Yes we drank the coffee, but only because we can barely function without caffeine in the morning, which was in the form of barely passable coffee. The advertisement also mentioned 24/7 drinks wine and beer. This was true,... but the wine must have come from the same place as the coffee. The red was of the quality of two buck chuck and if you can handle that you are golden. The white was a step above so we were happy with that. Beer was of the normal variety. I guess if I were just staying there for the room and the atmosphere,.. I might have rated it a 4, especially for the price. But I wasn't. Aberdeen Inn has some very strong positives and some definite needs for improvement. Some things were exceptional and some things disappointed. I'll start with the negatives, but read through the review to the positives, which are significant. The inn's neighborhood was not the best - just a little bit junky and unkempt. Upon arrival, Tom, the innkeeper greeted us with "Well, you parked in my driveway!" It was raining lightly, and we had parked under the covered entrance to unload. Guests need to understand Tom's sarcastic personality and not take it personally. I peered into the living room and Tom asked, "May I help you?" in such an accusing tone that we felt that this room must be off limits to Aberdeen guests. Understand that Tom's wife was absent during our stay, so her "feminine influence" may very well warm up the normal reception of guests. The Inn is rather cluttered with "excess stuff" and too much furniture. It could use a good interior decorator to de-clutter and refresh. It's showing the need for repair, as paint is peeling in places, floors are squeaking, and many cracks were in the rough-texture plaster walls of our bedroom. A hole in the plaster ceiling of our room where a light fixture had once resided remained un-patched. The Rose Room had a small closet converted into a bathroom. Our feet were in the shower when sitting on the toilet, but the toilet would also not pass the building codes in my town for its extreme closeness to the wall on one side. We sat at an angle. The sink is a small 10" bowl that appears to be constructed of stained concrete, although the chips and stains in this bowl and in the concrete shower floor left the original finish in some doubt. There is virtually no counter space in the bathroom, but this is not all that uncommon in converted B&B's. Conventional bathroom plumbing fixtures were non-existent, but were replaced with outdoor sprinkler gate valves requiring 1080 degrees of rotation to turn them fully on. The rough copper plumbing came out of the ceiling in the shower, and out of the wall for the sink, and the copper pipe itself serves as the sink spigot. It's this, as well as the nature of the proprietor, that causes me to call this place "quirky." Some people may find this bathroom a positive, labeling it "unique" or "artsy." Interestingly, none of the bathrooms in other rooms had these unique features, but rather had conventional fixtures, although the bathrooms and their fixtures were also very small. Our bedroom was packed with too much furniture. We had an antique desk, but no desk chair with which to use it. We had a huge Barcalounger chair and ottoman, as well as a large upholstered chaise lounge and an upholstered bench at the foot of the bed. The massive canopied king bed was gorgeous, although the mattress was in need of replacement and the sheets were showing there age in wear. We also found a dead silverfish between the sheets, but just interred him into the wastebasket. An armoire, full-length standing mirror, and two nightstands filled up the room. There was little storage space even for luggage, so we placed the large decorative pillows from the bed on top of the armoire, and so much dust flew info the air that we dared not move the pillows again. At 7 a.m. each morning, Tom squeaked up the old wooden stairway to place a pot of hot coffee on a narrow serving table for his guests. Now my wife felt that this was some of the BEST coffee she had ever tasted (she is a coffee connoisseur, preferring dark and strong roasts, whereas I've never acquired the taste for coffee). Breakfast was served anytime within a specified half-hour window, which provides nice flexibility for guests. Tom is a trained and experienced master chef, and culinary aficionados will truly appreciate his breakfast creations. He buys fresh ingredients and knows his food well in selecting the morning's menu. The presentation is exquisite and the taste tantalizing; Tom is certainly in his element in the kitchen. Tom really warmed up to us when he was in the kitchen, describing all of the food we were eating in great detail. He also is sensitive to personal likes and dislikes, adjusting the following day's menu accordingly, even preparing individually customized servings for a guest's particular desires. Tom told us that he was preparing a very early morning breakfast for the next day's guests, as they had to be at an early business meeting - this is amazing flexibility for a B&B that you would not get in most establishments. Tom also advised us on getting tickets to the Biltmore Estate through AAA that saved us significant money, and gave us sage advice on good and mere mediocre restaurants in Asheville. Bottom line: go for the food! Most B&Bs have smaller rooms and quirkiness. As soon as this Inn's proprietors correct some easy to fix deficiencies, this can become Asheville's first class inn. read more

A nice alternative to a chain hotel. The hosts, Tom and Michele, were very friendly and accommodating, and the breakfasts were delicious. All breakfasts start with a yogurt and fruit parfait and yummy baked good. We also had a savory quiche one morning and stuffed french toast the next. Our group stayed in several rooms. The main house rooms seem fairly standard for B&Bs -- nicely decorated and a real home feeling to them. Part of our group also stayed in the cottage, including the lower room in the cottage (not listed on the website). This lower cottage room was ok, although not on par with the other rooms. It provided the only twin bed option and had a private bath, but it felt like a converted basement with storage areas hidden behind curtains. It shouldn't have been priced the same as the other rooms and I certainly wouldn't seek out this room again. read more

Our recent stay at Aberdeen Inn was great! Our room was comfortable and furnished with lovely antiques. We absolutely love sitting out on the large front porch relaxing and having a nice glass of wine. We enjoyed a walk through the neighborhood with its remarkable old growth trees set in ravines amongst lovely homes. The owners of the Aberdeen Inn couldn't be more gracious and they provide one of the best breakfasts in town! We will definitely return. read more

The Aberdeen Inn was a completely lovely get-away place only a few miles outside of downtown Asheville. It is run and taken great care of by a seemingly very fun and jovial older couple. The grounds were chock full of flowers, stone paths, fountains and swings--quite the little oasis for this exhausted fam! Our room, "Fox Grove", I think it was named, was perfectly accommodating and almost perfectly baby-proof, besides a crystal bird figurine we had to place on top of the closet shelf and some wires we had to camouflage. The breakfast to this bed and breakfast delightfully included a fruit, yogurt (and sprinkles!) parfait, delicious home-made rosemary bread and a wonderful Greek inspired quiche with a sort of hollandaise sauce topping. The couple was so sweet and friendly towards our little man making him a nice little fruit bowl, some special cheesy eggs, some buttered toast and a to-go apple juice box. Don't miss an opportunity to stay at the Aberdeen Inn. It is located close to downtown Asheville and the arts district, easy to get to everything. This was a great location to relax, sitting on the front porch enjoying the view of the neighborhood and distant hills. The room was very comfortable, clean and nicely decorated. Owners Tom and Michele made us feel quite welcome and were helpful in every way. My wife and I just got back from staying at The Aberdeen Inn in Asheville, NC. Tom and Michele were Super Hosts! The Inn is charming and the hospitality is fantastic! The breakfasts were unbelievable as Tom has been a Chef most of his life. Tom does the cooking, Michele does the baking. Her creations are to die for! Not to mention the homemade jams and marmalades. OMG! We loved hanging out on the front porch with a glass of wine supplied by the Inn and decompressing at the end of each day. We will be back! read more

The Inn itself was nice and the price was a deal, if only the host's would have been personable. Tom was not warm, welcoming or friendly. I only met his wife (Michelle, I think) once at breakfast. He is very unfriendly and a bit obnoxious. The common area seemed cozy but unfortunately it was a little awkward and uncomfortable trying to have an intimate conversation when Tom is sitting just a few feet away playing on his computer. We found ourselves as adults "whispering" in our rooms for fear of being reprimanded by him. I wish I had read the Yelp reviews before I booked, I would have stayed somewhere else. read more
