Met a friend for lunch here. Have driven past many times, just never stopped in. He had the chef's salad, which looked good and which he polished off. I had the country fried steak. The steak was good, as was the sausage gravy. Not a huge portion, but it was enough with the sides and rolls. Rolls were very good, buttery and garlicky. Cole slaw was okay. Bacon and bleu potato salad was very good. Service was fine. Basically a slightly upscale diner, nice inside, looks to be a neighborhood hangout. Husband and I went for Sunday morning breakfast and got there by 8. The place was pretty empty, but we were greeted and told to sit anywhere. We grabbed a booth and got service right away. He got eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast. I got a veggie wrap with hash browns. All very good. We will definitely come back. Oh boy here we go! After not yelping for a solid year, I decided to yelp this place. I ordered pancakes, coffee and a cup of chili. While not angry, or unhappy, there's not much to say. Coffee was a little too expensive; considering that it's only drip coffee. However, pancakes were solid and chili was pretty good. My roommate ordered a breakfast burritos and it looked freaking bomb. Pico was fresh and it looked like a dream. Gravy was milky, scrambled eggs are not really scrambled but biscuits SLAP Def a local place. Def a chill place. Very, very good breakfast. Love the local, small town, hole-in-the-wall, diner feel. Walk to breakfast here and sat on the patio. The server said most everything is homemade, including biscuits and gravy. They have concerts on the patio on the weekends--I have not been for lunch or dinner so I can't comment on that. My husband, mother and I ate at Abner's last night. The food was ok. I had the Turkey Reuben sandwich with their Bacon & Blue Cheese Dressing Potato Salad. The sandwich was ok. It had the 'old school', dry coleslaw on it that tasted nasty, but the rest of the sandwich was good. The best part of the meal was the potato salad. Yummy!! My mom had the Turkey Club sandwich and she said it was very good. It didnt look like they werent skimpy on the meat & cheese on the sandwich, which is good, because who wants to eat a bread sandwich?? My husband had the chicken sandwich with a baked potato. He said that his food was good, but when he took a bite of the chicken, it was too hot too eat. Hmmm. Overall the atmosphere at Abner's was nice. You had a choice of either sitting in a booth or at a table. The service was good. The waitress said that they get are really busy on Friday & Saturday nights along with after church on Sundays. The food was ok .... we might eat there again. Maybe I'll just have to try another dish the next time we go there. read more

When it's nice outside, this location is great with an outdoor patio and a place to stop during DORA events. Abner's is the kind of place you'd find in any little burg around this state, usually (but not in this case) referred to as a "Café." You know, that dark little greasy spoon with a bar in the middle? That's Abner's. It's even located in a little burg - Old Hilliard - which feels like miles away from the plywood suburban wastelands down the road. Anyway. I was excited to recognize the menu from my childhood trips to the south side Abner's, where there was a hat-tipping cowboy statue out front. No cowboys here, but a nice terraced patio in front, looking over the downtown. Inside, there are photos of various local buildings and sites. Even for a late Saturday morning, the crowd was good but not overwhelmingly busy. Two doors harried the hostess, who had to run the entire length of the restaurant to seat diners coming in. They also are seat yourself during the week and wait to be seated on the weekends, which the hostess told me is indeed confusing for everyone. Service was friendly, with that Saturday-morning distractedness that signals the mid-day shift change, and our hostess came over to apologize for our initial wait to be seated. We settled in and checked out the menu. Plenty of regular stuff, but other diner-type specialties like a chicken-salad stuffed tomato and grilled pork chops, too. No pigs in a blanket (my six-year-old self was slightly disappointed). I ordered a BLT with egg and a side of fruit, while the spouse had the grilled pork chop breakfast with home fries and toast. The pork chop was great, with grill marks and lots of salt, and my BELT was perfect in all aspects: white toast, bacon, processed American cheese food, Hellmann's, tomato, iceberg lettuce and an over-easy egg. read more

Well, it could have been worse I suppose. My girlfriend (and also the coauthor of this review) and I wanted to catch a nice morning breakfast before a busy day, but our first choice at Starliner Diner proved to be too full, and thus, we had to settle for sloppy seconds. Abner's is in the heart of Downtown Hilliard, and is situated right next to an auto-repair shop. This is probably the reason why, as one other reviewer pointed out, the place smelled pungently of motor oil. Upon walking in, we were, unfortunately, only greeted by said motor oil, as there wasn't a hostess present. Eventually, a very particular older woman, who spoke with her frown and discontent, lead us to our table. From then on, we were visited by three different waitresses, which was a little confusing, but we were eventually waited on by a much friendlier, yet, just as aloof, waitress. Not being too impressed by the service or the decor (which was old and dreary and cheaply decorated with Halloween stuffs), the food was going to be a breaking point between one or two stars. Admittedly, the food was of decent portion, and was fairly priced, Certainly not Starliner Diner, but it was a nicer alternative to, say, McDonald's. Well, actually, McDonald's is actually nicer in that it isn't drab and dark as a hospice facility, but we digress. My wife and I moved to Columbus two years ago and a few months later, found a home of our own in Hilliard. Shortly after settling in, we discovered Abner's and it has become our "go to" place for breakfast. They have a dedicated parking lot in the back and the ambiance is of a local hometown diner, with plenty of photos on the walls of Hilliard from earlier times and with Ohio State Buckeye Jersey's as well. The service is super friendly, the food is good and there always seems to be a table available, even when the place looks full. We went again this last Saturday morning, roughly at 10:00am and the place looked busy, but of course, we were led to an open table straight away. Within minutes we had ours drinks in front of us and had placed our orders. My wife went for the breakfast sandwich, which is on a croissant roll with bacon and egg. I asked for the Chicken Fried steak and eggs, with wheat toast and hash browns. The food arrived quickly, still hot and was delicious. We've tried eating here at other times of the day but the breakfast they serve is our favorite. Lunch was good, as they offer a decent burger and the sandwiches are good, but we still enjoy coming here in the mornings. We will be back soon! read more

Looking for a breakfast place on a Sunday Morning without a waiting list is like looking for a bottle of water in the Sahara desert. It just ain't happening, so I remembered in the back of my head about Abner's over in Old Hilliard. They tout they've been around since the 80's, which is impressive, because I nor my husband have ever recalled ever eating here, or hearing it mentioned by anyone else. So, with stomach's growling we took a chance on breakfast. I'll admit.. we did have a small wait of 5 whole minutes, which is nothing compared to other places within the area. Abner's has a nice little outdoor patio to bask in some sun and nosh on morning, afternoon, or evening eats, but it was a little chilly, so we passed. The inside of this place unfortunately doesn't know what it wants to be. It's dark in there, which caters to the drinking clientele at the bar with large TV's displaying sports proudly, but here and there you'll see historic photos of Old Hilliard amongst beer signs, and Ivy. We kept it simple and cheap and ordered their croissant breakfast sandwiches with our choice of potatoes, which could be cooked in homestyle, or hashbrown, or what really got me was that the server offered me tater-tots. Hello!? I'm all over that! The breakfast sandwich was simple, filling, and hit the spot. There was nothing extraordinary to make it stick out above the competition, but it was just what I wanted. So... why am I giving them 4 stars? Simple. Their waitstaff is really great on Sunday. You can tell those ladies have been working there for a long time, and they've got the sweetness, and saltiness I have missed. Our server was so attentive, and made sure we were happy with everything, and wanted to make sure we'd come back and visit. It's hard to find good servers anymore. A lot of them are just very generic, or frankly just don't care. Abner's may not serve high quality in their food, but their Servers made us feel like home. First time to Abner's today and it was a very good experience. It was not all that busy, but I did go on a weekday morning. A bit dark, kind of a lounge/bar atmosphere as opposed to the diner style that I was expecting. My waitress was super friendly and helpful. She brought out a giant bottle of hot sauce and ketchup without even being asked. Must have read my mind! I ordered eggs, fried potatoes, bacon, and biscuits & gravy. The eggs (ordered over medium) were cooked to perfection and the biscuits/gravy were very hearty and good. The bacon was a bit wimpy, I prefer thick cut, but tasted good and wasn't over or undercooked. The fried potatoes might have been my favorite part of the meal. They were skin-on red potatoes which was a nice touch, and cooked to just the right balance between crispy and soft. I didn't need to put salt or pepper on anything, it was all well seasoned. My meal came to 10 bucks with a coffee (nothing special, tasted like Folgers maybe), which is very reasonable. read more

Abners is the latest in a few restaurants at this location in Old Hilliard. Mel's Diner was here before and Abners seems like an upgrade. The place is clearly going for the local casual dining market and does a good job. The decor is casual with scenes of Hilliard and hilliard sports and historical memorabilia on the walls. The menu has breakfast lunch and dinner and is pretty heavy on standards. In the few times I've been there we've had the chicken salad sandwiches, fish sandwiches, burgers, reuben, soup, salad, wings, club sandwich. I would say they are all good, not great, but not bad. The onion rings were better than average and the service has been good. The standouts here are the specials, each night there are 2 or three specials that usually involve some down home good cookin!!! This is the types of meals your grandma used to make!! If one of those sounds good go for it over the standard fare! Also, they have a really good deal on beers. I don't know if it is only on weekends or not, but if you buy a hot dog or burger, you can then buy several beers for a really cheap price ($1 or $1.50?) I've been craving quality French toast & getting tired of recycling the same ol' restaurants. I decided to finally give this place a try & WOW! I arrived about an hour after opening and I was greeted immediately! Service was great, very fast! Food was out super quick! French toast was truly delicious! It was light and fluffy yet very flavorful. Prices are excellent! I spent $10.05 for eggs & cheese, bacon & French toast and hot chocolate! Not bad at all. I will recommend and return. read more

Came here for breakfast, after a long night at work with some friends. I liked that when we walked in, the waitress recognized one of my friends a regular, and immediately brought her coffee, with what she wanted. That is the type of place that I want to go to ! The menu was pretty basic, nothing really exciting, but the breakfast was pretty tasty. I ordered the breakfast burrito that for some reason had the chilli, sour cream, tomatos, and lettuce all on the side, which seemed very strange to me. I for some reason love mixing everything together and enjoying the medley of flavors that comes forth when you do so. Even with that being said, the the food was good, the service friendly, although my favorite part of the burrito was the chili that came with it. I wish that the burrito came with some home fries of some sort, since all the other dishes on their menu did, it just seemed strange to not have that included. I'd go again, if I was in the area, and I was once again surprised as to how charming "Old Hilliard" can be when wandering around and looking for a good place to eat. read more

This is the old Mel's Diner in Old Hilliard. It's easily missed if you're not familiar w/the area but it really is a great, little Hilliard "gem." My review is only for breakfast as I have not experienced dinner at Abner's. However, the breakfast is excellent! The prices are low and you absolutely get that "diner" feel. The waitresses are all very friendly and attentive and they keep your coffee coming. I have been here 4 or 5 times now for breakfast and only order one thing: 2 eggs w/corned beef hash and toast. If you like corned beef hash, you MUST get this. It is the perfect combination of salty corned beef to yummy hash brown potatoes. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the sourdough toast was delicious. It's a fairly spacious restaurant and even has a full bar if you're interested in going after hours for a drink. For breakfast, it's a must - if you're in Hilliard. read more

Abner's is a great little diner located in charming old Hilliard. We have gone for breakfast and dinner a handful of times. The breakfast is fantastic - their french toast truly cannot be beat. For dinner I usually get the steak salad that includes fries (my weakness) on it as well. Totally awesome. Ranch dressing is great too. Overall, service is good, prices are reasonable, and location works for us. My only complaint is that the place is a little dark/dimly lit and feels like it could use a little pick-me-up. read more

I have made at least three trips to Abner's, all for breakfast. One was today and it's the middle of winter. The other two were in early Fall when the front outdoor patio is open. The latter is when Abner's really shines because of its location on the main street through Hilliard. Saturday mornings are great people watching time and Abner's patio is quaint and appointed with large umbrellas for sun-shade. Food. I've had their french toast and it is very good. Their omelets are on par with most in CBUS but not gargantuan and that's fine with me. My recommendation for home fries is to get the red potatotes vs. shredded. I believe the shredded ones are pre-cut and from the freezer. Still good but a nice fried red potato chunky is right up my alley. Abner's also serves breakfast wraps or what they name "Under the Blanket". These are so-so but I've had one (veggie) and it works... just average though. Abner's gets PACKED on Sunday mornings to be prepared to wait. The servers know local patrons so don't get worked up if you seem to be overlooked ... they like Hilliard locals that come time and time again. You may wait 20 - 30 minutes for table inside. Abners in the A.M. outside with french toast! Yeppers...... and don't forget coffee .... and tip the servers. read more

I took my Mom here for a late breakfast a couple weeks ago. We both had the sausage gravy and biscuits. The biscuits were heavenly and the gravy was good as well. It comes with your choice of potatoes and one of the options was Tater Tots. When that's an option, is there really any choice?! They were worth it. Very crispy and not greasy. Our waitress was very sweet and efficient. She offered us to go cups for our Cokes which is always a nice touch. Great local diner! read more

The food is good and the prices are great. However, we've been there a couple times recently when there has been a statewide mask mandate and sat on the patio. Both times our waitresses had masks on but wore them below their chin, leaving their mouth and nose exposed. I am pregnant and very disappointed that they have chosen to disregard the law and aren't protecting their customers. We will not be returning. read more

We had Sunday breakfast here and were very disappointed. We ordered what we thought was a scramble but was a clump of something covered in melted (microwaved)cheese. The eggs base was rubbery and the potatos were over cooked and cakey. The green peppers were uncooked and offered no flavor. The portion was small considering the price but as it were, this ended up being a blessing. No time was wasted on presentation either as it seemed even the cook saw no hope for this dish. To say the dish was uneventful would be a complement, it was awful. Even the coffee sucked. Will consider trying lunch here but breakfast was a bust. read more

Great little diner in the middle of old Hilliard. My wife and I call this place our second kitchen. Cuisine is reminiscent of home cooked food your grandma used to make. Meatloaf, burgers, chicken dinners, pasta dishes. And it's all good - never had a bad meal. Excellent breakfast with generally reasonable wait times even at peak hours. They also have a full bar, though you won't find any exotic beverages. The owner, Gordon, can be seen cooking food and chatting with customers most days. Wait staff is friendly and fast. Pretty refreshing in a sea of chain restaurants around town. There is a great patio out front looking over Old Hilliard. Great place to have an outdoor meal on a nice summer evening. Usually a live singer/guitarist on Thursdays in the summer. Once a month from May to September they have a live band and a buffet on the patio on Saturday night. Get there early because it fills up quick. In short, if you want a home style, stick-to-your-ribs meal that's not overly complicated, this is your place. read more
