Abolitionist hosted my group (~20) for our informal reception after my wedding and they were stellar. We booked the back room space and it was perfect for the group. From the beginning of the planning process until payment, I really enjoyed working with them and appreciated their flexibility. They helped make my special day even more special! Went after the Plantpalooza event downtown. Unfortunately, the staff seemed overwhelmed. It took over 20 minutes to been seen by the hostess and sat. The best way to describe the situation is chaotic. I think they only had two people working the floor. So the hostess was also the bartender and server, hence the long periods of disappearing. After waiting some time for our food it was brought out in to go boxes with no napkins or utensils. I opted for the white pizza and found it gross and honestly very disappointing. Staff was apologetic toward the end for the wait. Might return back for a drink and on a weekday. read more

I am glad I had the opportunity to have dinner in the charming establishment. The building is historic and I believe it used to be a pharmacy. There were several pizzas I wanted to try, but I am always on the lookout for something unique and settled for the Pickle Pizza (basil garlic oil, mozzarella cheese, spinach, organic dill pickles, old bay seasoning). They also have a nice selection of beer. I had the Dead Tree (Sherry Barrel aged Imperial Stout with Hickory Syrup from Falling Bark Farm in Berryville, VA. Smokey, roasty maltiness). "Super cool brewery in a super cool town." I had been wanting to stop in here for some time now and the last time I was close by we didn't get a chance to make it but this time we did. This brewery has an amazing space and even though we didn't eat because we were planning on going to dinner afterwards, all of the food I saw people eating did look quite delicious and the prices were great too. Next time :P The bar area was busy so we waited a couple minutes before the server made his way over to us. He was a super cool dude. Thanks bro! We ordered: - Sour Doah 5/5 - 3rd IPA Vision 5/5 I love how many different types of beers they have and the many flavor complexities they infuse into their beers. I can't wait to come back and try more of their beers in the near future. I am not huge on pizza, but I did really enjoy these artisanal personal pizzas on naan. I had something with fig and cheese and the fig spread that was used as the base was the perfect amount of sweet to balance the tangy goat cheese and salty Brie! My sister had the pickle pizza - surprisingly good - if you are into pickles, I would highly recommend. They are seriously personal sized though - so unless you are not hungry at all, you most likely will not want to share ;) Beer was decent - we had some good ones and some that were just OK. It was a group of 5 of us and we all really enjoyed the Reasonable Stout (which had a nice toasted malt flavor), the Treason Brown Ale was a group favorite though I didn't try it personally and the Czeched out Pils was decent - it was refreshing, got the hops but was missing something - not bready enough, maybe? I don't know - it was close, but not quite there, but still something I would drink again. Wonderful place through and through! All of the beers I tasted were delicious and unique, you can tell the owner/brewmaster puts a lot of thought and care into each recipe. Similarly, the food menu is also unique, with lots of options you don't see very often (or ever!) such as a pickle pizza, Old Bay wings, and various other fun sandwiches and pizzas/flatbreads. The staff was all super friendly, helpful, and genuine. I was just a visitor to Charles Town but they made me feel like a local, and the overall environment inside was just warm and inviting. I also loved that they had hand sanitizer readily available on the bar, as well as outlets (standard and USB) to charge one's phone after a long day of hiking. Will surely be back! read more

Nope nope nope. The first time we came in here we were very rudely turned away with our service dog. Because there are very limited food options I decided to come back for a second chance redemption because I wanted to try the food and, to put it politely, there was a lot left to be desired. First of all the staff had just a general aura of laziness like they were forced to be there. The bartender treated me like I was bothering her and the hostess had zero facial expression or personality. Okay fine, I dont really NEED a chipper staff. But the food was AWFUL. The white pizza had no flavor and the portion was really small. The hummus plate was a joke....hummus was super salty (wouldnt be surprised if it was store bought loaded with seed oils) with like 4 shredded baby carrots. You couldnt even use fresh normal carrots? You need to use the baby carrots that are probably soaked in chlorine?? The menu in general was just laughable - every thing is very bready (no salads or seafood to break up all the pizza offerings). The wine pour was weak. Literally zero redeeming qualities...will never return. So disappointed and don't understand the obsession with this place. I also heard the owner is a jerk. This is a fun experience. My original plans for the day fell through and my partner pulled this place up on Google. It was a random chance that really worked well for the day. It was beautiful outside and we were able to get a table in the back. My group ordered 2 of their pizza options, some boneless wings, and 2 sample flights as well as some individual beers. We ended up staying for a couple of hours and just really enjoyed the space. We interacted with 2 waitresses throughout our time and they were both cool as hell. It really added to our time since it was an unexpected side quest when our original destination didn't work out. read more

Thanks to Katrina and team for serving us last week. Our group of 6 came in for some late night brews after dinner and had a great time. We were only in Charlestown for a week for class and finally made it in for some brews! I had a flight of beers, the cool thing about the flight was it was served on a wooden board shaped in the state of WV. The beers were good. The brewery outside looks very low key, easy to miss if you drive by. They have two areas for seating to accommodate patrons. It was cool, they didn't kick us out as they closed at 10pm, we left around 1015pm. I purchased some t-shirts and stickers to bring back to Los Angeles! It is very fitting that my first review of 2022 is Abolishionist Ale works in Charles Town WV. I am hoping 2022 will pleasantly surprise me as much as Abolishionist did. West Virginia is not known for craft beer, but if anyone tasted the beer here they would definitely be on the map. The venue has a bar side and a restaurant side. Did not get to try the food, but I did get to have many of their beers. So I will let the beer speak for itself. The BEER: Inspectah Dank. American IPA 6.5% ABV... slightly dry, dank and delicious 3rd IPA Vision. West Coast IPA 6% ABV... refreshing, baby juicy with grapefruit zest finish Black Hops IPA 7% ABV... OMG delicious.  If you are a lover of black IPAs, this is "The one" to marry Labor Haze IPA 5.8% ABV... soooo smooth and delicious, the IBUs are low on this one making it a drinkable IPA for any palette Hop High double dry hopped DIPA 8.5% ABV... really good, the nose is a Mango Farmhouse IPA 6% ABV... very slightly sour with spice and faint Mango West Funkin Virginia.  Barrel Aged Sour 6.5% ABV... complex like a dry wine.  I really loved this. You could add some seltzer and have mixed drink. Dank of Charles Town. Dry hopped IPA 6.5... okay so I can't really describe this one, but I really loved it.  It was Dank, but I got bubble gum and 4 am sex, please don't judge me Liquid Fruit Cake 2021. Holiday spiced barrel aged almost sour 7% ABV... so very complex, imagine Xmas is a sour, but it's not quite sour and you can drink it all day. Yum, yum and yum Twist Darts from the heart  IPA 7.5% ABV... very faint flavor of juicy fruit, like gum at the end.  It was actually good, but not great compared to all the other awesome beer here. Had such a great time here tasting beer. This will be a must stop next time I am in the area. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. We waited 30 minutes in a line that did not move, with no explanation from staff. When we asked, they simply said they were busy. Then, a staff member behind the bar announced loudly that they only had seats outside and had no idea when customers would be leaving. She was extremely rude. While it does have a variety of beers on tap, nothing was quite memorable that I would want to have a full pour after trying a flight. Impressively, the restaurant delivers 1/2 hour away to NOVA through Door Dash and among the few delivery spots to Stone Manor BnB in Lovettsville. However, it took 1.5 hours and 1/2 hour longer than the expected delivery time. The food was stone cold. Would have been nice if the food was packaged a bit better and transported in an insulated bag. The Funky Fig pizza has a nice unique blend of cheeses and a sweet and salty combo of ingredients - fig spread, goat cheese, brie, and rosemary. The pizza definitely tickled my taste buds eagerly awaiting for the next bite and combination of funky flavors. While I'm typically not a fan of cold pizza, it was quite tasty. The Bavarian pretzels were quite dense and very salty and stone cold. I'm sure they would taste better if they were fresh right out of the oven and pipping hot. Not the best delivery option. Skip the pretzels and go for the pizza! Hubby and doggy enjoyed the boneless chicken wings. If I'm ever in town at Harper's Ferry, I'll definitely stop by for the funky fig pizza! read more

Found this via Yelp as we were looking for a interesting place near the casino... currently they have both indoor and patio options available as well as takeout. Because of their size there bar area is closed. My hubby was a bit disappointed that the citron beer he wanted (forgot to note the exact name) was out... they were very gracious and offers him sampling options but got done reason he decided not to take advantage... I don't do beer so can't comment on that but happily they are a coke shop... We ordered one of their pizzas the hot Hawaiian with pineapple, siracha, prosciutto... it was very tasty and filling... for us splitting this one was a perfect. But they are sized for one person... the menu has some interesting combos ... the fig and goat cheese sounded intriguing so hopefully the next time I'm thru. You can also build your own... This is such a great brewery not too far from Harper's Ferry and not too crowded either. They have a pretty limited menu, but a few great choices for personal sized pizzas. I went with the brie and fig pizza that was mostly a dessert pizza because it was incredibly sweet and not savory at all which was not the most satisfying. They had a great selection of beers and very affordable and generously poured flights. Plenty of outdoor seating on a nice day was great to have and I loved that they had facts about many abolitionists and the work they did for freeing enslaved persons. Went here after a long day of travel and not eating anything. Reviews looked great so we decided to try a local place. We had to order at the bar but I think it was because there was limited staff. Fella was nice enough, we orders and he directed us to the dining room. There was ice water on carts that we could serve ourselves)we didn't know this prior to ordering). Dining room nice. There was also an outside seating area that looked nice but it was raining while we were there. I had a white pizza and my husband had a sandwich with chips that were served in the bag. The atmosphere is relaxed and great for families or friends seeking a place to break bread and have a few beverages together. While most of the artwork is tasteful, there was one piece of a women with devil horns eating a cross that my family found just a bit off putting. My husband and I came here on a Saturday afternoon. We sat outside at a hightop table, out of the sun. The speaker was right above us so the music was a bit loud and we had to talk really loud to have a conversation. There was also a panel of boxes and wires hanging on the wall just within our arms reach which seemed kind of hazardous. Being pregnant, I obviously did not partake in the beer. My husband andcI split the white pizza to hold us over until dinner - it definitely would have been a 1 person pizza but it worked for our needs. The dough was soft, not very crispy but tasty nonetheless. All ingredients on top were super fresh and overall it was a delicious bite. I do think the price was a smidge high for the size but the ingredients were quality. Service was kind of slow but there were only three employees working the inside, outside, and bar so we did not mind as we weren't in a hurry. I was surprised that they allowed smoking within the outdoor dining area as the table next to us enjoyed a few cigarettes while we were there. As many of the beers sounded interesting, I would give some a try if we come back to the area. read more

So I suspect that might be a hassle at times but for us, on a Saturday night on Memorial Day weekend just coming out of the pandemic, it was easy and convenient. Food - we just had a pretzel stick appetizer and it was very good. Even though we were full from dinner we still completed it. Nice mustard with it. Wine - I know, who gets wine at a beer place? My wife, that's who. The ale works had some local Virginia wines and there was a red blend that was really very nice. Not Cabernet heavy and complex but great mouth feel and flavor. Very good an drinkable. We even bought some bottles as gifts! Beer - Here is where this place really shines. I had a flight of five beers and all were very good, true to style, not a miss among them. There was one cask-conditioned offering which was an ale I believe and it was whiskey-like and excellent. I had a hazy IPA on advice of the bartender which was light and delicious. The stout was full of coffee and earthy flavors. First rate. I also had a fruity sour which was good. Strawberry if I recall corrrectly. Not the best sour I have ever had but very nice. I can't remember all five but all were good. Light but friendly crowd. We sat at the bar which was comfortable and a pleasant environment. Highly recommended! read more

Wow were we pleasantly surprised to find this fun pub/restaurant on Main Street in Charles Town! They make their own beer and serve, among other things, nice personal sized pizzas, which is what we had. I tried their original Abolitionist ale which was nice and I think had a cherry taste. (You can buy 4-packs to go if you want). There's a modest bar area in front that seems to always have customers. We went outside in back where there were tables since it was such a nice evening. The bartender and out waitress were both very nice and helpful and told us about the beers and pizzas. Oh, yes, I made myself a pizza with vegan cheese since I'm not good with real cheese. We were looking a fun place to take the family that had delicious food. This place was a perfect place to grab a bite to eat and spend some time. There is some great indoor dining just past the bar. It looks small when you first walk in but it is nice a roomy. We enjoyed a glass of their Dirty Breakfast Oatmeal Stout, and the hard cider. I ordered the Funky Fig Pizza, my husband ordered the Buffalo Blue Cheese Pizza, and our kiddos ordered the soft pretzel rods. Everything we had was really delicious and we would highly recommend stopping by. We are buoyed our meal and some time sitting and playing Taboo with our kids.
