My family owns several rental units and I was dealing directly with Robert at ABT Plumbing in Torrance for a few days. Out of the blue, Robert tells me that for NEW customers they will only accept cash payment of a non-refundable cash deposit of $500. I even asked Robert why he as punishing me to which he said that he wasn't punishing me. VERY STRANGE! 3 days ago Robert said that the job should cost around $300 depending on what they may find is the fix. The problem with the plumbing is that (1) Kitchen Drain Line is stopped up before getting to the Main Line. This unit is within a smaller building of (6) total units and none of the other units plumbing is stopped and the other drain lines within the affected unit (Bathroom Toilet, Sink, Tub) are NOT stopped up. I offered to pay via Credit Card or even Zelle! (As most people know, Zelle is almost immediate and you can't even take the payment back once it is accepted by the other party.) I then called my Attorney to see if they can really do this and he stated the following- In California, a contractor can legally ask for a maximum upfront payment of $1,000 or 10% of the total project cost, whichever is less on home improvement contracts, as per state law restrictions set by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). My Attorney then advised me to submit a complaint against this unscrupulous company, which I will do, since I am confident that this company will probably continue to do this to many others... Had gas leaking in the backyard and made an appointment with ABT Plumbing to cap off 2 lines and do pressure testing. I made it very clear that that's the service I needed when I made the appointment. They gave me 10AM to 2PM window and show up at 3PM without any warning. After assessing the issue, the plumber told me that he will need to return tomorrow, not because he can't do it right now but just because he didn't want to work late. When I told him that I think he should fix it right now if he can, he simply said "You need to find another plumber" and left. I took the day off to wait for this guy to show up and tell me that he doesn't feel like working late. I thought it was very unprofessional. Probably will never call this company again. We had a plumbing emergency after hours last night so my husband called this company and spoke directly with someone. My husband had video footage of the water leak under our house and offered to text it to the guy he was speaking with. The guy said yes, text it to me and my husband said OK, please call me right back as soon as you watch what I'm sending you and the guy said he would. The guy never called so my husband called him back a couple minutes later and asked if he had watched the video clip and the man said give me about 10 minutes or so. And we never heard a word out of him after that. Word about bad customer service travels fast in a small community like ours so... bummer for these guys. And based on many other one star reviews, bad service seems to be fairly common with this company, so I guess we dodged a bullet. read more

I was referred to ABT Plumbing & Rooter by First American Home Warranty ( my home warranty insurance). My appointment was scheduled and confirmed on 2/19 for 2/20 with a 8-10 AM window. I informed the dispatcher that the time did not work for me, due to the fact, that I work. My faucet in the tub had been dripping for about 3 days. I really did not have a choice, therefore I took the morning off to have the service completed. Around 9:42 AM, I received a call from a dispatcher at ABT Plumbing & Rooter informing me that my appointment would be cancelled due to an emergency within the company. The dispatcher was very unapologetic which led me to believe that this is a common practice for the company. Customer TIME is irrelevant. THANK YOU! for reminding me to appreciate good customer service, which I did not receive from your company. Robert and his tech was absolutely the rudest and most unprofessional people I've ever met running a business in Southern California. I was referred to them by my home warranty company and after speaking with the person that originally called I told them they wouldn't be doing my plumbing job because of the rudeness and lack of knowledge about Plumbing. It seem that I knew more about Plumbing than they did. They refuse to quote prices and don't show up when they make an appointment. Not to mention that they lie repeatedly. The plumber who visited our home gave us a quote for the necessary work upon his arrival and then discovered that he needed to go to the store to get a necessary part. After he did the work, the bill was $300 more than the original quote. We looked up the cost of the part online and discovered that it was a $20 part. We told the owner of ABT that we would not pay him $300 for a $20 part and his solution was to "split the difference" and charge us $150 for the $20 part. We will not use ABT again. read more

I booked these guys to come out today and they said on the phone they would arrive shortly after 10AM. They got there early around 9:24, not that I'm against being ahead of schedule but I was busy with a meeting. So he asked what time will I be there and I said about 10:30 and he said great, see you then. 10:30 passes and I call them at almost 12:00. The guy on the phone said that they can't do the work, it was to change out a ball valve in a piece of equipment I have. He said that's not something they could do and that's not the situation. I maintained it was a simple ball valve connected with 1/2" copper, he kept saying that's not something they could do and the situation was different and to call someone else out in my area. I was perplexed, what plumber can't replace a ball valve? Apparently these guys can't. Well if you can't replace a simple ball valve you shouldn't be a plumber. I called Carrera's Plumbing and they were able to change it out in about 30 minutes. They didn't keep their commitment to meet me at 10:30 and I didn't even get a phone call. I was not happy with their customer service at all. I'm attaching a picture of this basic ball valve that they are incapable of changing. Even I know how to change this but I didn't have my pipe cutter and torch. Update, after posting this review I got a call from the owner. He threatened to recruit bad reviews for my business because he had some friend's that had a bad experience. In addition, he threatened to call agencies on me. He called again and tried to threaten me. I got this all in my voicemail and will post a link. This is the most immature business owner I've ever run across. Instead of calling to apologize and own up to their mistake, which I would have been happy to have been understanding, he's trying to play dirty. Reporting him to Yelp... I can not thank ABT Plumbing enough! Again they have saved me from a backed up main line. About every 12 - 18 months we get a main line clog and it never fails that it happens at night and before any warning. It also happens before I think about calling and getting a maintenance appointment. ABT never fails to get someone out to me to fix the issue and get my line flowing again (once it was even New Years Eve!). This means so much to me because I am a person that has many medical issues, who get her treatments at home and truly needs her toilets and shower working! His name was Ray, he was so professional, polite, and got the job done so quickly. Robert has been SO kind and so professional that I call him and recommend him to anyone in the Ranchos Palos Verdes area. . He did a huge job for a commercial property recently replacing pipes damaged by roots. After the job was done he even called to make sure everything was okay and if we needed anything else. He was quick to asses the issue & let us know what needed to be done so it doesn't get that bad again. He definitely built his trust with us especially when we realized how smart he is when he detected an odor coming out of one of the bathrooms. Mind you, that bathroom had no issues that we even knew about but he chose to help us out in every way possible. Where do I begin? If you would like to be ripped off and then told you should be thankful they didn't rip you off more, by all means call ABT. They will do the job, not communicate with you and then charge you a ridiculous amount of money to fix their own lack of experience and then when you try to confront them about it they tell you to be thankful they didn't rip you off in a more expensive way. One of their plumbers showed up, and spent half the time on the phone with their boss asking him what/how to do the job. He managed to break the snake in my drain in the process and did not know how to fix that problem. He told me that the pipe was broken and his manager was going to be coming in about a half hour to continue the job. When the manager showed up, he had to remove the broken snake before he could fix the clog in my drain. After he removed the broken snake, he used another snake to remove the clog (a sock that had gone down the drain). All in all it was about an hour to an hour and a half of work. There were no special tools used, just a traditional plumbers snake. At the end of the day he charged $495 to do the job. $500 to remove a soft object from a drain with a plumbers snake? Are you kidding me? When I confronted him about the charge he told me that I should be thankful that he didnt try to convince me to remove the pipes and go a more expensive route. He said other plumbers would have ripped me off and I should be thankful he chose to do the "cheaper" route. I asked what he charges for unclogging drains. He said it's usually $140 but because this was a foreign object it was $495. A $350 difference to remove something the exact same way as if it were some hair. This is egregious, especially since the first plumber they sent was not competent and had to have his boss come and fix the problem. I have since contacted other plumbers and was told that they would have only charged their normal rate to unclog drains ($100-$150 range) There would not be an "upcharge" for removing a foreign object. I am not thankful that I was ripped off for only $350 instead of $3000. I'm not happy that ABT ripped me off at all. This is bad business and poor customer service. read more

Another company came out previously and tried to snake a stubborn bathtub that would not drain and gave up, saying that we would need to open up the walls and ceiling to replace the piping. I obviously wanted another opinion before resorting to such drastic measures so I called ABT and Robert was able to accommodate our weekend schedule for a visit and was exactly on time. He even took his shoes off before entering our house (the other guy said that 'his shoes were clean' and walked in on our carpet)! Needless to say, Robert was able to snake the drain out successfully and we don't have to tear open the walls, saving untold amounts of $$! Scam. Charged me $95 to tell me what I already knew...that I needed a plumber. I'm not kidding - literally made me pay them $95 for them to give me an estimate that was 50-90% higher than anyone else I have talked to. They are concerned about doing good work, which I get, but they will never get my business. Felt like a complete sell job from the minute the guy showed up. I am incredibly disappointed with the customer service of this plumber. I called for a client that was having trouble with a faucet and needed to change the cartridge. I explained this was a slight emergency as she was having guests the next day and they understood and we're going to make it to the house very early. When they showed up they attempted to repair and when they couldn't they just walked out after being very rude to my client. No trying to trouble shoot with the manufacturer, just gave up and left us high and dry.
